TWP 1501 Cedartone is the most popular color in the 1500 Series. It is a brownish/cedar color that is slightly darker than the 100 Series Cedartone.
TWP 1500 Series is available in 9 semi-transparent color choices that penetrate into the wood while enhancing the natural wood grain. The 1500 Series is higher in solids content which may result in “richer” colors than the 100 Series. In general, the 1500 Series color will not match the colors in the 100.
Final TWP 1501 Cedartone color will vary based on:
- Type of Wood
- Age of Wood
- Prepping of Wood
- Application method

If using the Deck Brush you sell to apply the first coat 1501, will just one pass drive product into the wood surface or are several passes ie back and forth required? Wood is fir and old but seems quite porous.
Is the 2nd coat (wet on wet) also applied with the brush or would a stain pad be better?
If product remains on surface – what device you recommend to mop up the extra, and is there a way to avoid that build up? Lastly do you recommend shoe covers to walk on the wet first coat?
I have a huge deck and so want a good result.
Just a bit more sanding to do, perimeter and between boards and product arrives next week
Thank you
Apply it evenly with a couple of passes. A brush or stain pad will work for either coat. You can use covers on your shoes.

I replaced approximately 170 feet of 20 yr old neglected fence last fall and plan to stain with TWP 1501 Cedertone. Due I need to use the restore or brightener products? Also based on your calculator I believe I need 20 gallons of stain. Is this correct? I am staining both sides of the fence.
Yes, Clean and Brighten for prep. As for how much, what is the total sq footage for both sides added up?
2040sq ft
Then yes, about 20 total gallons for the 2 coats.
Can this product be applied with a sprayer? I have some monument signage that needs to be done
Yes.
Yes, I just did that. I took out the filter at the base of the intake hose, and I needed to shake the sprayer frequently, but it worked well and was so easy!!
Hello, looking at the customer photo albums, trying to chose between 1501 cedar tone and 1530 natural. They’re so similar. Can anyone explain the difference between the two? Thank you
1501 has a little more brown than the 1530.
In Wisconsin, I have just thoroughly power sanded a 10 year old treated lumber deck that had been stained with a solid color stain 5 years ago and had peeled terribly. Except for some very fine grooves where some of the original stain still shows, the boards look great now. Should I power wash before applying your 1500 stain? Would you advise still using your deck brightener or would you need to see a picture first? Thanks.
Yes, we need to see some pics posted.
The cabin walls were freshly restained (done every 10 yr); the deck was last stained 2 yr ago (and about to be restained)
What kind of finish will I end up with is it satin or semi gloss?
There is no shine with the TWP stains.
Since the 1501 Cedartone is darker than the 1530 Natural, will it offer better U.V. protection? I have samples of both colors and I just would like to know if the darker stain will outlast the lighter one. Thanks for your help.
They will last the same.
Did you test the samples? Do you have a picture? I’d love to see the difference between the two. Those are the same colors we are trying to decide between
I applied the two sample colors 3 months ago to my 7 year-old pressure treated deck. The Natural color (left side of photo) is a little lighter and brighter than the Cedartone with more yellow/orange tones. The Cedartone is a little darker with more brown in it. I’m planning to try a Pecan sample before deciding on a color. Good luck, Marv!
Thanks for sharing the picture. We’re going with just the cedar tone
My deck is several years old and has been stained with Behr semi transparent stain. I am planning to use your 1500 stain with the Rad stripper and brighten, will this work?
Post some pics for prep help as Behr sometimes cannot be stripped as it can go on like an opaque stain.
Hi, do you have a place in Austin, Texas or Round Rock, Texas or Cedar Park, Texas where we can purchase your product? I am looking at the 1500 Series for a brand new cedar fence. Appreciate your help.
We sell online only as a TWP dealer.
Hi, doing cedar siding in VA. Can’t get 101 so need to go with 1501. Do we still apply 2 coats wet-on-wet?
Thanks.
Yes.
Thank you!
What is the minimum outdoor temperature ?
50.
New deck pressure treated wood. 6 months old, I gonna use 1501 ceder stain deck is 8ft high. Do I stain all area of the wood.
Use this kit for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Stain the exposed wood. No need to stain the undersides.
What 200 series is closest to this color?
201 Cedartone.
Is the 201 or 203 darker hard to tell in photos
203 is darker.
Which one is more red- cedar tone or pecan? I prefer more brown over red.
Neither are red but final color varies based on your wood type and age. Pecan has more brown than the Cedartone.
Thank you! I was told I’d need approx 10 gallons. How do I order and how long should it last on a picket fence?
3-5 years on a fence. Order on this link: https://www.twpstain.com/twp1500-5gallon-detail

I will be laying new cedar decking this fall in New York. Should I stain to prevent graying?
Stain in Spring: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Staining WILL prevent graying. If you follow the link for how to prep new wood, you will have a great result. It’s a process, but it works!

I stained my deck last fall, but it rained about 6 hours later. The color looks good but should i put another coat on it this spring?
If it looks good then leave it until next year.
We used TWP Natural on cedar siding many years ago–loved it. I do have
.a few questions. At a different house now and have a deck to stain (new pressure treated wood–is at 5 months old, nothing applied to it). In Illinois, so looking at 1500 series. Question is we used Natural on cedar siding previously, would you recommend Cedartone for pressure treated wood for similar tone? Natural on pressure treated seems like it may not have much tone. I looked through gallery, but I am not sure which photos are pressure treated woods. I did read about new wood prep, you are still recommending cleaner/brightener for 5 month old pressure treated correct? Thank you
Clean and brighten and just one coat. Natural has a lot of color so either one would be fine.
The pressure treated wood mentioned is only 5 months old. I thought the wood had to be a year old before stain will absorb. Please advise.
4+ months: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Any merits to applying a water sealer on top of the TWP 100 stain on a deck?
You cannot add a sealer on top of a deck stain. It will not work.
ok—thanks!
I stained my cedar deck in 2013 and reapplied in 2016/2017 using 1530 Natural. It is time to do it again to get the cedar color back. I was going to go with 1530 Natural, but thinking to do 1501 Cedartone.
If I go with Natural, will it cover over the current stain? If I go with Cedartone, how will that cover? Will that give the older wood (9 years old) a better cedar look?
Thanks!
Best to use the Stripper Kit so it is all even in color: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Will Cedartone have a more universal and bolder cedar look?
Just a little richer than Natural.
I thought a big plus with your product is that you can apply future coats of TWP stain without having to use the Stripper Kit. In the past, I just had to clean the deck and recoat. Is that not the case?
If switching colors you will have to strip. If not, then use the cleaner brightener kit.
I prepped the deck (just railings and balusters; the floor is trex so won’t need stained), only to realize the weather isn’t going to cooperate for the staining part. Based on the forecast, I doubt there will be any more days this year that have a temp above 50F and no rain forecast for 48 hours. Will I need to do the full prep again in the spring? Is there anything I can do now to lessen the work that will be required again at that time, or protect the wood that is now somewhat stripped down? Any insight is appreciated.
You will need to prep again if you cannot stain until Spring. Nothing you can do to lessen that.
I received a can labeled 1501 Cedartone, but it looks like 1503 Dark Oak on my PT fence. Did I receive a mislabeled can or am I doing something wrong? The stain itself in the can looks dark.
It is not mislabeled. The TWP enhances the gain of your wood. If the wood is internally darker like this then this would be the result. Also, make sure it is properly stirred as the pigment does settle. Use a drill mixer paddle on your drill.
Looking at the samples of cedar versus pecan posted by Richard. Does anyone know if the test samples are on cedar wood?
Looks like a brand new pressure-treated pine board and that is why the colors are so light.
Love the results of my deck. It had two coats of solid until I sanded it down and applied TWP 1501 Cedartone. Love the results! 1.5 Gallons wet on wet!
I have a 12×18 deck with mixed new and old wood. I like a more “natural” color but prefer brown over yellow/orange. Based on some other users’ comments, seems like 1501 cedar is a good option. Any insight on how the two different color wood would look? I don’t expect them to look the same but getting them closer in color would be great. The deck is in partial sun in the afternoon.
New wood will always be a shade lighter in color than older wood as it is less absorbent.
I finally chose Pecan 1520 as it is light brown without traces of yellow. I tested samples and Pecan is similar to Natural. Have not applied it yet because the weather is not cooperating here in Indiana.
Oh nice, thanks for sharing!! Descriptions says lighter than Cedar, which is exactly what I’m looking for! I didn’t even look at this.
1520 Pecan on the left
cedar on the right
Thank you!! Super helpful. I’m going with pecan.
I tried the Natural color and it seems a little too yellow. Cedar tone seems to be more brown. However, I am concerned that in direct sunlight it will be hotter for bare feet as it is a swimming deck at a lake. Any comments?
There would not be any difference in heat retention between the two colors.
Does this come in a solid?
No, TWP does not come in a solid stain.
Cedartone 1501 applied 3 years ago on now 6.5 year old cedar screened porch. Used Defy Wood Cleaner – Some areas (beams) sanded with 80 & 120 grit sandpaper. Will be using the same process this time except will be using a Wood Brightener as well will be adding to TWP 1501 a Mildewcide Stay Clean,Crudecutter,Mold Buster or ADD-2.
There is already an EPA registered mildewcide in the TWP. Best mildewcide on the market. No need or advantage to adding more.
Does the mildewcide provided in TWP 1501 appear to be sufficient. Please provided MSDS’s on TWP1500
Mildewcides prevent mildew from growing in the stain. What you have is dirt/mildew that is sitting on top of the TWP stain and then running off. Nothing can prevent this from occurring.
