Note: The Restore-A-Deck Stain Stripper needs to be neutralized with the Restore-a-Deck Wood Brightener.

For old wood that was previously stained with Sikkens do I strip then stain with TWP or do I strip then clean then stain with TWP? Thank you.
Strip and brighten for prep.
I used RAD Stripper over the weekend with booster and thickening. Worked pretty good but have about 1000 sq ft of deck so only made it a little over half way today. I will finish on Wednesday but might need to sand a few areas. At what point do I apply the brightener? I assume after the pressure wash and sanding. How long can I wait to brighten from the original pressure washing? Thank you!
Brighten when all is removed. Try to do it as soon as you can.
I don’t know what is on the garage door. It looks like a semi-transparent stain that is fading in the sun. Do you think Restore-a-Deck will work? This is a photo of the door and a close up.
Yes, it should work. Use the Thickening Gel Additive as well. Make sure to use the Step 2 Brightener when done to neutralize.
If I add your thickener to your stripper, can the mixture still be sprayed with a pump sprayer?
Yes.
How critical is it to wait 48 hours after using the stripper and brightener? Rain is in the forecast for the next two weeks? If I have to wait three weeks for 48 hours of sun will I need to reapplly brightener, or should I just stain within three weeks? I have a cedar deck and am re-applying twp 100.
You have to wait at least 48 hours after prep, there is no way around this. If you cannot stain within two weeks, you will need to lightly wash and brighten again.
After I use the RAD stripper, rinse and let dry, can I simply re-stain with TWP or are other steps required?
You need the brightener after the stripper. Wait 48 hours to dry and then stain.
Will. Restore a deck do damage to a concrete driveway.
No.
We plan to strip our deck (having used TWP CedarTone stain) every year for the last 6 years as we have some bare parts and some flaking wood. Other parts, that are under cover, are still really good though. Would Restore-A-Deck do the job? And if so, could you tell us when the deck/surrounding area are safe for a dog to be around it? Thanks.
Yes, the RAD Stripper and pressure washing. Brightener after you are done. The areas around will be fine once you are done and everything dries. Cover delicate plants.
Will RAD stripper and Brightener strip the paint off the Hardiplank abutting the deck?
No it will not.
Will RAD remove Olympic Maximum Stain + Sealant In One-Toner applied 3-4 years ago? Will RAD damage powder coated iron deck rails or adjoining hardier plank siding? Note the one light colored board we flipped 6 months ago due to an unsightly knot on other side.
It will remove this stain. Apply the stripper and pressure wash off. Rinse well and then apply the RAD Wood Brightener. You should protect the iron railings from both the Stripper and the Brightener. It will not harm the hardy plank.
Will RAD remove cabot oil based semi solid stain that was just applied 2 months ago?
it is difficult to remove a newly applied stain and even more so when a semi-solid. Could you post a picture?
Here’s a couple pictures
As long as it is a true oil-based stain then it should remove most of it but you will need to use a pressure washer and you may need to strip it 2-3 times to get this off. It looks very thick.
This is what he used, and he sprayed it on. What would be the best application for the RAD? Can I still spray it on since it will be vertical posts/railings with my house behind it? Thank you!
You can pump spray on the RAD prep products.
We plan on stripping and staining our second story deck. I am worried about how long to wait after we use the stripper and brightener to let the dog out in the area.
When dry the deck is fully dry after the prep.
I was more concerned about the ground cover underneath and around.
12-24 hours.
Trying to find a product to remove old Sherwin Williams Deckscapes solid latex-based stain. Stain was applied approx 8 years ago. Boards on right – sanded with drum + orbital sanders. Boards on left, untouched. As you can see, existing stain is pretty thick. Hoping to use a product to remove and avoid labor intensive sanding. Will this (or any other product) remove the existing stain?
A deck stain stripper will not remove a solid stain. You will have sand to remove.
How to remove Helmsman spar urathane base
You will need to sand this off as a stripper will not work.
We have a 30 yr. old cedar deck that we have restained several times with a Wolman DuraStain One Coat semitransparent stain. When we replaced some of the boards five years ago, I thought it wise to put a wood preservative on first (that claimed it could be stained over) and now these boards won’t hold the stain for more than a season. Will this stripper remove this peeling stain and allow a more porous surface? Thanks
Sorry but this product cannot be stripped. To fix, you will need to power sand to remove.
Ugh. Thanks
Just bought a home 30 miles north of Boise Idaho with 3 Doug Fir decks. Which prep and stain products do you recommend? Thanks!
That looks like an acrylic semi-solid stain. Not easy to strip. Use the RAD Stripper and pressure washing to remove as much as possible. Sand if needed to remove the rest. Brighten after full removal. Stain with the TWP 100 Series when prep is done.
Sorry, looks like one of the pics didn’t upload.
Do I have to use a power washer with this to get rid of old stain? I used the 5 gal Cedar Tone CWF-UV stain from Home Depot to stain my deck a few years ago. Much of it has worn off completely on the vertical surfaces of the deck (and the wood is graying) but plenty of it remains on the horizontal surfaces. I also have an area with some blackish-greenish coloring due to water accumulation. (See pics for all details). I’m thinking of buying the TWP 100 & RAD stripper/brightener 5 gallon combo for this project. Would a garden hose be enough with this stripper, or is a power washer still necessary? My only concern is that I might damage the surface of the wood with the power washer. The lowest PSI I can rent is 1400.
Yes, you will need the Stripper/Brightener Kit for this. Apply and pressure wash off. A hose will not get it off. You can rent a 3000 PSI machine. It is only 3000 psi it an inch away from the wood. When you wash you should be 8-12″ away from the wood. This will drop the PSI to less than 1/2.
Do I apply it with a pump spray first, or do I inject it during the pressure washing?
Apply with a pump sprayer and then pressure wash off.
OK. Thank you. I had one last question. The directions indicate you should wet surrounding vegetation before applying this so I’m going to water the grass around the deck before I apply it. But what about stuff like vinyl siding? Do I need to do anything to protect that?
No. Just rinse very well to remove the dirt, etc.
We have Sikkens Cetol DEK Finish on our deck that has peeled badly. Have sanded most of the old stain off the deck, but where shaded and protected was difficult to completely remove and some remains. Will your stripper remove this (and what product) or do we have to do heavier sanding?
The stripper will not remove Sikkens DEK. No stripper will 🙁
Heavier sanding will be needed.
Cabin siding below the deck that I plan to strip with Deck Restorer. How do I prevent the stripper from affecting the wood siding below the deck.
Try tarping really well. That is your best option.
I’m preparing to stain my log home with TWP 1500 and plan to use the RAD products to prep it. I already used bleach to clean off most of the mildew (probably an unnecessary step now that I plan to use the RAD stripper – see attached photo.) Do you have any other or different recommendations?
The current stain will need to be removed before using the TWP. Do you know what is the brand of stain on there now?
Yes. I believe it was a Diamond Vogel semi transparent oil stain.
The RAD Stripper should work on this. Make sure to use the Step 2 brightener when you are done.
We used TWP on our ipe deck two years ago, and I ended up not liking the color we chose (too red). Would this work to strip the rest of the old color out before picking a different color?
Yes, it will remove the old coatings.
I stained my deck in 2009 with a Cabot semi-solid (I think) stain. Will the RAD cleaning system do the job to allow me to use a TWP product? I’m in northwestern Michigan with northern exposure on my deck. Thanks!
You will need to remove the Cabot and this will require stripping (not a cleaner) and sanding to get it all off. This is a very think old stain so the stripper will not remove all. Start with this:
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
and finish removing with a sander where the stripper is unable to remove.
Will Restore a Deck Stripper remove Thompson Water Seal Clear from the deck floor?
Yes, it will!
Here are several pictures of the deck
A stain stripper will not remove this. You will have to power sand to remove.
I have a 20 year old deck that was stained very 2-3 years using clear and/or semi-transparent. Usually pretty good results. Last year I used semi-solid color and results are terrible. Lots of peeling and inconsistent color. Will your stripper remove semi-solid, water based Olympic stain?
Please post a picture.
We have a second story deck. Will this stuff mess up concrete below the deck on the first floor? What about left over product? Will there be a lot of left over junk from the process below the deck? Our kids use the patio under the deck every single day. Is this safe? Does the house on the first floor also need to be protected?
The stripper and brightener will not harm the concrete. You will need to rinse the house and patio below the deck to remove the dirt and old stain that was removed from the deck above. Once everything dries, it is okay to use the area.
Wondering if you did this yet…we have the same situation and I want to seal the stamped concrete under our deck after the deck is done. Any recommendations are welcomed! Thanks
We have stripped the old stain a section at a time after work. Is it too late or worth the effort to brighten the next day after deck is dry?
You should still apply the brightener even a day or two later.
Hello, I hope this isn’t a redundant question….so many comments….If I am to sand, do I strip, let dry, sand then brighten?
Sanding is for any wood greying or removing whatever troubles that arise during or after stripping.
Thanks
Yes that is the correct order.

I plan on using TWP 1500 stain to finish job. What color of TWP do you recommend to replace Superdeck 7100 amberhue for the longest life?
Thanks for your help.

The stripper and brightener are not mixed together. They are two separate steps. If you click the pictures on the products you will see the instructions.
Not sure on the super deck color as we do not sell their brand.
Hi, I applied Thompson Water Seal to my DF deck boards. Will this remove the sealer and also allow me to install the 1500 series?
Also what is the natural color? Is it actually a clear or is there a tint to it?
Yes, it will remove the Thompsons. Natural is tinted, not clear.

Best to wash at about 1500-2000 psi.

Apply the brightener right away while the wood is wet.

Did you use a pressure washer after applying the stripper? Did you neutralize the stripper with the brightener? if not you will need to restrip/pressure wash and apply the brightener after.
I scrubbed with brush and pressure washed after applying stripper. It helped but there are still spots with uneven darker and lighter patches, etc. not sure why pics aren’t loading. thank you.

I have a 25 year old deck that has been coated every few years with Behr oil based semi transparent stain redwood in color. The product is no longer available. Do I have to strip or sand this deck to use your product? The deck is a rougher cedar and sanding would almost be impossible. I also replaced some post and railing and used some left over stain from a few years ago and then went to Home Depot to get more and surprise they don’t carry it anymore!! So I have a combo on new wood, some just stained for the first time and 25 year old deck boards!! Thanks for any help! I’m in Colorado.
Strip and possibly sand to remove all of the Behr. It does have to come off to use the TWP.

Hello, the cleaner will remove the gray but cleaners and stain stripper will remove a solid color stain from a deck. You will need to sand off a solid stain. The 100 Series is not allowed in CT. Once prepped correctly, try the Driftwood Gray by Armstrong Clark.

It was new 4 years ago and finished with Cabot Australian Timber Oil, which was reapplied last year after it was scrubbed with a mild chlorine bleach solution to get much (not all) of the mold and mildew off. It is getting black again. Which of your products should I use, please? Also, the uprights are black metal – will they be affected by the chemicals if I use a pump sprayer? Thank you.
Stripper kit. Apply the stripper and pressure wash off. Apply the brightener and rinse. As for the spindles, 99% of the time they are not affected, but best to test first.
