INJECTABLE SAFE-STRIP PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
- New application technology allowing pressure washer injection
- Removes oil-based and water-based semi-transparent stains and sealers
- Restores weathered wood to natural color
- 100% biodegradable – will not harm plants or pets
- Does not contain chlorine bleach that may damage wood fibers
- Use on all exterior wood surfaces including decks, fences, and fascia
Important Note: Gemini Safe Strip Stain Stripper may not fully remove Solid Color Wood Stains, Paints, Varnishes, and Excessively Over-Applied Acrylic Semi-Transparent and Semi-Solid Coatings. To remove these deck and wood stain types, use the RAD Paint & Solid Stain Stripper
Surface Preparation:
Injecting:
1. Put injector hose into undiluted Injectable Safe-Strip container. Inject desired working area (200-300 sq. ft. recommended). Injector ratio 12:1 or lower.
2. Although Injectable Safe-Strip has little or no dwell time, 5 minutes of product working time is recommended. Pressure wash, working area thoroughly.
Ready-to-use:
1. Pour Injectable Safe-Strip into container. Add 4 parts water (1 gallon makes 5 gallons, 5 gallons makes 25 gallons). Apply liberally to wood surfaces. Best application results are with a Deck Sprayer. After application, always keep working area moist during surface preparation.
2. Once applied you may begin to scrub (NO SCRUBBING NECESSARY WITH USE OF PRESSURE WASHER). When scrubbing applied area, use synthetic, stiff bristle brush; do not use a wire or natural bristle brush.
3. Rinse thoroughly with hose or pressure washer. A pressure washer will show the best results.
* Use caution when using Safe Strip. Wet surfaces will be slippery.
Coverage Rate: Approximately 500-1000 square feet per gallon.
Will this work on ceramic tiles? Some semi transparent stain fell on the tiles.
It will not.
I’m using a brush, bucket and hose with Safe Strip. What’s the way to dispose of dirt solution? Can it go down the basement sink?
After you apply the SafeStrip, you pressure wash it all off into your yard. You do not “reclaim” any “dirt” solution.
I have a 20yr old cedar screened in porch that has been coated with TWP 100 clear. There is some minor graying of some places due to aging I suspect. I want to strip entire porch and re-apply with Twp 100 Clear again. A TWP dealer said an application of Safe Strip is all that is needed before re-applying TWP 100 Clear. Is this correct? Also should nearby windows, steel doors and vinyl siding be covered when using Safe Strip.
This will remove the TWP Clear. Use while pressure washing. Cover the surrounding areas from over spray.
How does Safe Strip liquid compare with Restore-A-Deck stripper powder?
Restore A Deck stripper is a better overall stain stripper for most applications and at a better price point since it makes 5 liquid gallons.
What product do I need to strip off Cabot Australian Timber Oil (3years old)? I’m planning to use TWP 100 series once stripped.
Thank you.
Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit
Thank you so much. Is this stripper safe for painted surfaces? We have porch balusters that are powder coated aluminum. Do I need to tape those off to protect them?
It should not harm painted surfaces but be careful of the aluminum by test spotting first to see if any reactions.
will the Gemini safe strip injectable 1000 remove the stain on a rough sawn cedar fence
Depends on the stand brand. The Restore-A-Deck Stripper is more effective.
We are wanting to restain our five year old deck. It has one coat of TWP and two coats of Thompson semi transparent stain. The deck has just had a roof put over it and is being screened in.
Which product is the best for removing the existing stain and does the deck need to be cleaned prior to applying the product?
Use the RAD Paint Strip due to the buildup of coatings:
https://www.twpstain.com/rad-paint-solid-stain-strippers
Brighten after.
Are there any weather related restraints to applying this product? And can we restrain immediately afterwards or do we need to wait?
Temps are 50-90 F. You have to let the wood dry for 48 hours after any prep or rain.
Our log home was stained with TWP 1500 when it was built. We are going to re-stain the home with the same stain, however we have areas of mold on the home. What’s the best cleaner to use to remove this? Do we have to remove the current stain before we re-stain? Thank you.
Prep all with this kit and pressure washing.
https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Thank you for your response. I did see that, however in reading the directions for it, it stated that “if mold and mildew is present the surface should be cleaned with a solution of 1 part household bleach and 1 part water.” I didn’t think you should use bleach and was confused as to if this product removed mold and mildew. Thank you.
No need for bleach, use the kit.
We have a 20 yr old log home that’s only had Sikkens Stain on it Cetol1 then Cetol 23+ and then the log and siding 4 years ago. We been told to get rid of the black staining on the stain that we need to strip it to bare wood. Will the Gemini work?
You will need this to remove your Sikkens.
https://www.twpstain.com/rad-paint-solid-stain-stripper-5-gallon-detail
Even though it is a transparent stain?
The Sikkens you have is the filming (dries on top of the wood) varnish type. You need the paint strip to remove it.
I bought the liquid Gemini Safe Strip at a local store is this the same product as the Step 1 Restore a deck cleaner? I bought it thinking it was as my left over Restore a deck from a few years ago is probably expired.
No. Not the same at all.
Can you please explain difference
RAD is a cleaner and the safe strip is a stripper.
Having issues with 100 series cedartone stain applied yesterday (after prepping with cleaner/brightener kit). Previous stain was TWP, same product/color. Deck is shiny and still tacky in many areas. I applied wet on wet, 2 coats, only needed/used 1 gallon for my 280 sf deck (calculator said I would need 3 gallons). I’ve read your article about correcting over-application (mineral spirits etc.). Should I attempt to correct with mineral spirits? Also concerned that it only accepted a gallon of stain. If stripping and restaining is needed I prefer to use safestrip vs RAD stripper – will that work? Thanks so much!
You over-applied. Use the mineral spirits to remove as much as you can of the excess stain. You will need to the RAD stripper with both additives to remove. Safe strip will not work here.
Clairification: do you recommend I do both or one or the other? If I’m able to remove shiny/tacky areas with the mineral spirits do I still need to strip and restain? If I decide to strip do I need to use the mineral spirits first? Should I be concerned the deck only needed a gallon? Also, it’s still giving off fumes/odors. If I strip and restain do I need to use the brightener? It’s so great you offer this in the moment guidance, and really awesome to get such timely responses too!!! THX!
If you remove the shiny tacky, you do not need to strip. The tacky will go away in a few weeks either way. if you strip, you will not need to use the mineral spirits. You always have to brighten when you strip.
Getting ready to strip and stain our deck again (it’s been about 3 years). We haven’t had to strip the railing until this time. The contractor used copper pipe for the balusters. Will the safe strip corrode the copper if it comes in contat?
It should not but always test spot first.
I’ve been staining exterior wood for nearly 30 years, using twp for 25. I’m trying to understand why you are pushing the restore a deck stripper now? The RAD stripper will take paint off windows, gutters and the painted metal spindles, but the safe strip won’t even burn your skin unless you leave it on a long time.
The RAD Stripper does not remove paint. It removes deck stains that are transparent, semi-transparent, or semi-solid. Also, never put your hand in the stripper, it will burn.
Stripping is needed over cleaning for a variety of reasons. Changing brands of stain, changing colors, if you have build up of TWP over the years, etc.
Please explain difference between safe strip ( no brightener needed afterwards) and RAD stripper/brightener kit. I am removing old twp from a deck so I can apply a new twp coat.
The RAD Stripper is much more effective at removing prior coatings.
Does wood need to be neutralized with a brightener after using Safe Strip?
No, it does not.
Deck was stained with TWP 1507 Pecan. We have prepared the deck with Olympic deck cleaner. Should we still need to use the stripper and brightener or is this ready for staining? Also, Could you please let us know if railing needs to be stripped before staining? Can I use a darker color to avoid stripping? What are my color options?TIA
Strip and brighten all for best results. Very easy to do: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
We used Thompson’s Water Proofer Plus Clear Wood Protector on a new cedar deck, two years ago. What product(s) should we prep with? We will be using 1500 cedartone.
Thank you.
The RAD Stripper and Brightener kit.
Great, thanks!
will this product strip cabot semi oil stain?
No, but this might: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Send some pics for help to make sure.
No, this will not remove a solid stain. No deck stain stripper will.
Will this help remove latex deck paint?
No, you have to sand to remove a paint.
I have used TWP safe strip for several projects. I am needing to buy more, preferably locally. The retailers you have listed do not sell it anymore ( ace hardware/ Kelly more paints/ mungers.) could you please advise where I can purchase this so I don’t have to order over the internet. Oklahoma City area. Thank you.
We only sell online.
Can I use Safe Strip on a cedar fence coated with some (unknown) clear product back in 2004; then stain with clear TWP100? Or must I use Restore A Deck to strip and prep? Does Safe Strip work on mold/mildew? We have lots of plantings underfoot so more biodegradable prep would be helpful.
The RAD Stripper is more effective and both are biodegradable. The Safe Strip should work to remove mildew.
We have a two year old cedar fence, with one coat of clear WoodRX. I like that safe strip can be used in a pressure washer, makes prep much easier. Is this indeed the best step prior to applying 1500 cedarstone?
Teh Safe Strip will probably not remove the WoodRX. Best to use the Restore A Deck Stripper Kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Will this be safe around metal such as a above ground pool?
Test first but should be okay.
Don’t it take along period of time to tell if a chemical corrodes metal?
No, any reaction would happen right away.
We are in the process of purchasing a log cabin in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. The previous owners fell behind on maintaining the exterior, and there is a significant fungus build up on it (please see pictures). We’ve had the home inspected, and there does not appear to have any rot. I am considering using the TWP 100 series stain when we eventually get to that point, and I would like to stick with the same manufacturer through the process. Is the Safe Strip product capable of removing the fungus and previous stain? Can it be done at one time, or in two steps (fungus first, then previous stain second)? I do not know if the existing stain is water or oil based.
The current coating looks like a film forming varnish of some sort. This cannot be stripped. You will have to media blast or power sand it off. Once fully removed, you can then use the TWP.
@TWP Stains – The owner had stated that they had a clear stain applied previously, but she did not remember the brand. I’m thinking something like the Woodguard, perhaps? At this time, I don’t have a better close up picture to show. What are some characteristics I should look for in the wood to determine if it is a film forming finish or a stain? If it is a clear stain, then would Safe Strip be able to remove it and the fungus?
As we mentioned before, this cannot be stripped based on the pictures. It is film-forming. If you can get a close up we can take a look at it but based on what we are seeing so far, you will have to sand or media blast to remove it.
What are the characteristics to look for between film-forming and non film-forming?
The coating is on top of the wood. Peeling and the mildew issues you are having.
Hello, do I need to use a brightener after applying and rinsing Safe Strip?
No need.
We have converted a deck area to a 3 season deck. I did not have the opportunity to remove the stain on the deck prior to the new work being done. To enclose the deck area screen material was placed under the deck joists. Is there a deck stain stripper available that will not damage or corrode screen material?
Not sure if a stripper will harm it or not. Sorry.
Will this take paint off of side of house or trim of house? I have a deck 14′ in air and surrounded by a painted band and 4 painted columns
No, it does not remove paint.
Great!! Will I need the same amount of TWP stain I used when the deck was new and never stained? It is pressure treated wood
Yes, that is correct.
have used sikkens srd for 20 + yrs but need to remove a few stubborn built up spots. recommend rad stripper/booster or safe strip?
Do you have pictures?
no, but spots are only against the house maybe 3 inches in size, definitely less than 5% of entire deck.
Need pics to determine if a stripper will work or not.
Hi – I need to restain our pergola (the same color) . . . it’s been 10+ years. TWP was the original product used – no sure of series or color. Please provide direction on preparation and product. I like the way the original looks, just needs to be refreshed. I think it is cedar.
Looks like Rustic color. Prep first with this kit and pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
excellent – thank you. 2 follow up questions:
1. On the cleaner, do you recommend spraying on and then powerwashing off? or adding the cleaner to the power washer?
2. On the product – do you recommend TWP 1500 or 100 series?
1. Apply and then pressure wash off. Cannot be applied with a pressure washer.
2. TWP 1500.
I need to re-stain my log home that I bought a few years ago but don’t have the details on what was put on the logs. I’ve attached some pictures.
Can you help me:
1. Strip off what is there currently
2. Recommend a product to stain the logs with
Unfortunately what you have on there looks to be a semi-solid to solid stain and that means it cannot be fully stripped. You might need to media blast to remove. Once done, use the TWP 1500 Series.
would safe stain stripper hurt metal window ?
It should not.
Do I need brightener after using this product?
No.

I stained my deck last night with two 100 dark oak. It rained about 7 hours after and now I have a lot of dark running spots down the vertical sides of my steps as well as a few lighter areas that seemed like they didn’t take up any stain. Should I clean with a power washer and re apply after letting the stain dry? Should I clean, sand, and re apply. Or should I use a stripper and start over. Deck is pine and approximately 12 months old
Post a picture of the stain after it fully dries from the rain water.
As you can see. I have a multitude of issues. Hardly any stain in some areas. Running stain in others.(some of this may have been poor application) And water spots from the rain!!! Please help me proceed:(
You should remove all stain and start over. Your best option for this is the RAD Stripper: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
What would be the difference in stripping the stain off vs sanding, cleaning and re staining
A lot easier to strip compared to sanding.

I have TWP 120 on cedar siding. Mildew appearing so need to apply new water based stain because oil based no longer available in Maryland. Tried a cleaner with recommended sodium metasulfate to strip but that didn’t work well. Will this product strip the TWP 120 and how best to apply?
Oil-based is allowed in MD as long as VOC compliant. The TWP 1520 Pecan is oil-based and allowed there.
Use this to strip the TWP 120. https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I cannot even find the container (mom’s caregivers moved everything) but I am pretty sure just 3 years ago I used cedar colored Thompson’s stain on my new cedar grape arbor. It is starting to fade, and is really odd color now. Um, I am not going to be able to sand this, it has grapes growing over it. Any suggestions?
It has to come off if you want to use TWP and that would entail sanding for this product. It will not strip off.
I tried the safe strip and it wasn’t cutting it so I ended up getting the restore a deck cleaner & brightener kit. That worked well.
We coated our new, covered cedar deck with TWP cedartone four years ago. It still looks good (not greyed) but it’s getting very light in color and you can tell it needs to be done. I picked up some safe strip to clean it off before recoating, but I’m wondering whether I should use the other stripper and brightener instead of the safe strip. I do have a pressure washer. I haven’t opened the safe strip and can easily return it if that’s the better way to go. Thanks.
The Safe Strip will work for you.
I have metal railings due I need to cover or tape them.
Hard to say as the spindles are not all made the same. Usually, there are no issues but always test first and if an issue, you would need to cover.
Is this product safe for use on cedar siding? If not, is there a different TWP product which is? I’m looking to remove the existing stain and possibly apply a lighter color
What brand and type of stain are you trying to remove? Pictures will help.
For years my house was stained with Sikkens Cetol SRD semi-transparent and a couple of years a go my contractor switched to Sherwin Williams Woodscape. I think the Sherwin Williams is an acrylic and it hasn’t adhered well over the oil-based Sikkens so I’m hoping I will have success in removing it so that I can switch permanently to TWP, which I’ve since been told is a superior stain
You will not be able to strip multiple layer buildup up of an acrylic stain over Sikkens on vertical walls. It will have to be sanded off or corn cob blasted to be removed.
Sorry, one more. Is this product safe and effective for removing an acrylic stain such as Sherwin Williams Woodscapes?
It will not remove an acrylic stain from wood siding.
Thank you. The product description indicates it removes both oil-based and water-based stains. Aren’t water-based and acrylic stains one in the same?
This will not work to remove a water-based acrylic effectively. You will need these products and booster/gel additives:

https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives
Is this product safe and effective for cedar siding?
Will Safe Strip damage vinyl siding on my house?
No, it should not.

Probably residue. Did you try soapy water and rags? If not try a water based graffiti remover.
Is twp 115-1 safe to use over water ,can it be put on wet wood.
TWP stains cannot be applied to wet wood nor should you have the stain drip into the water when applying. Once dry, it is fine over water.
