I live in GA. My house was built with rustic cedar siding in 1979, then covered in vinyl around ’82. I have pulled off the vinyl in several areas- it’s in good shape but I believe it was stained at least once because I can see the same color stain over the cladding nails- looks similar to your Cape Cod stain. We want to restore the original cedar to a medium or dark grey. Which product(s) do you recommend for prepping & staining for maximum life and to cover unevenly aged boards?
I’m interested in the semi-solid but I was told by an “expert” that “semi-solid stains aren’t stains but rather watered down paint that will not penetrate the wood and eventually peel.” Is this true?
You will need to remove the old stain first. Post pictures for the prep help. TWP stains are penetrating oil-based stains, not filming. Your expert is incorrect.
Having trouble differentiating between your TWP 100 Series and TWP 1500 Series and which would be best. I will be staining over a Brazilian Redwood deck that has been stained with Sikkens Proluxe Semi-transparent oil stain. It will be cleaned but not sanded, and looking for suggesions. Thanks, Tom
You must remove the Sikkens 100% first. As for which series to use, that varies based on what is allowed in your state. Where do you live?
I have a deck made of cedar tone lumber, love the look and color as is. Would like to teat wood for longer life with out changing look. Say maybe with a satin sealer. Is this posible?
No, that is not possible. Stains must be tinted for UV protection and that means you will enhance or change the color of your wood. You would not gain any longevity by adding a “clear” sealer over it. Adding a “shiny” coating to a deck will lead to peeling and blisters.
semi-solid 200 line OK to use in Calif?
You can use the 1500 or 200 Series in CA. Neither are semi-solid but semi-transparent.
We just installed a composite deck that is a Weathered Teak color. I can’t find a stain in the 1500 series that looks good with the deck color for the built in redwood benches that surround the deck. If I use TWP 1500 Clear stain with no UV protection, will the redwood ‘grey’ over time?
Yes, it will.
We are staining a 5 y.o. PT pine deck that has never been stained, in Texas. Is TWP 100 recommended? Some recommend sanding then light bleach. I’ve read that cleaning and brightening might be better. What do you recommend?
Use the 100 Series and the Gemini Restore Kit for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I have a deck that we added on to and I thought it was 2 different species of wood but after sanding they are a more similar than I thought. Left side (new) is Cedar. I thought right side (original) was redwood but maybe its Cedar? Right side does appear to be a touch darker. Any thoughts?
Not sure but they look very similar or the same.
It just rained and the difference is a bit more stark when wet. Both sides sanded to 60 grit.
We have a small original deck that came with the house in redwood I believe, and then extended to left and right with cedar. Whats the best way to make it not super obvious there’s 2 species of wood, the semi-solid pro series? How would 100 or 1500 look in those conditions?
It will not match between the different wood and the different ages. The cedar will stain lighter no matter what. The semi-solid colors would blend the best since they have more pigment but it will still be off slightly.
Is the russet 200 and rustic 1516 similar in color? I spoke with a rep yesterday about staining my home and the recommended the 200 for vertical surface over the 1500, but I alreadyhad my heart set on the 1516! Haha
Not the same but close. You can absolutely use the 1516 Rustic on your fence!
We are redoing a 50 year old redwood deck. We are planing the boards to get to a smooth surface. It is pretty red but the house is brown, so I would like a color that will match the house. What color do you recommend? 100 or 1500? Do I need to let the wood age after planing? Thanks!
Browns would be Dark Oak or Black Walnut. Use the 1500 Series.
We’re in the early phases of deciding a color scheme for deck/fence yet to be installed, so we’ve ordered several samples of the 100 series. Understand that we’ll need to wait 4-6 months after install of the deck/fence and then use RAD before staining, but solely for purpose of the testing the samples, will the stains applied to new wood (without the dry time or RAD) be substantially the same as the wood after drying and RAD? We’ll be testing our samples on cedar and pine.
The weathered and prepped wood will be slightly darker since the wood will be more absorbent. Also, if the fence is rough-cut wood, it will be much darker than the smooth decking.
I have been using your 100 stains on our large deck and pergola for 5-6 years (3 times so far).
But, I also built a large heavy outside table several years ago out of Cedar. I used some natural finishes on it when I built it that don’t last. Also, the wife grew to not care for the natural graying of the Cedar. I am in the process of planing and sanding it down now to get the top level and smooth again along with filling in a couple of knots that have fallen out annd/or got soft after years of weathering.
Are your stains safe for an outdoor deck/picnic table. Maybe the 1500 series??
Do not use wood filler. It will not stain to blend. As for the TWP, you can use the 100 or the 1500 Series. Only one coat if you sand. Do not sand finer than 60-80 grit. Sanding to fine means you will have to weather and then redo the prep as the stain will not be able to penetrate correctly.
Sorry but no, we do not sell that.
1. Yes, the correct color is correct. The final color will vary based on wood type, age of the wood, application, prep, etc. Also, always make sure to mix thoroughly as the pigment can settle to the bottom.
2. Probably not. TWP second coats need to be applied wet on wet. Over applying can result in shiny and sticky areas. You could wait until next Spring, prep and recoat with a darker color then.
What is the wood species that the colors are displayed? Is that pine? I’m applying to douglas fir so I’m trying to get a feel how it will appear.
Pine.
We have a deck that is probably 10 years old. We stained it a couple of weeks ago with an oil based Pittsburgh stain, there are flat and shiny spots. 5 days later we had a lot of rain and now we have muddy dog prints we cannot get rid of, we have used cleaner and scrubbed, nothing works. We are going to get a sander and take everything off the floor down to bare wood. Would you suggest using Restore a Deck stripper or cleaner after we get done sanding and then use the brightner? Also, will the stain look lighter after that? We have tried several samples and they are all darker than what we thought. What would you suggest putting back down – Kansas City MO
Clean and brighten after the sanding. do not sand finer than 60-80 grit. Only 1 coat when you sand. Color varies based on prep, age of wood, type of wood, etc.
We currently have 100 series Dark Oak and are looking to change to series 1500 to see if it last longer between applications. 1. Does 1500 last longer since it’s semi-solid? 2. What color in the 1500 comes closest to matching the Dark Oak?
1. The TWP 1500 is not semi-solid but semi-transparent like the 100 Series.
2. 1503 Dark Oak.
The 1500 will not last any longer than the 100 Series on a deck.
I have the 1503 Dark Oak and has used the products to strip and brighten . Was going to do the 103 Dark Oak – and was told it was a little lighter. But looking at these pictures of the colors above it looks much Darker than the 1503. Is there a way to achieve the color of the 1503 by adding clear to the 103 Dark Oak? Or Pecan? I really don’t want it to be as dark as this shows.
Yes, you can lighten the Dark Oak for either series by adding the TWP Clear to it.
Can you stain over the 100 Series with the 1500 Series?
After prep, yes: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Hello – your stains are the best ever! Thank you for making such great products. Question: what’s the color difference between 1500 series Pecan and 100 series Pecan?
The 1520 Pecan is lightly darker than the 120 Pecan.
Hi there, I just got my samples and see now that I need to go with a semi solid. What is the semi solid equivalent of Rustic? Loved the color but need more coverage. Thank you!
There is not a matching color for Rustic. Best to sample some colors that are close and see how it looks on your wood.
Can I get samples of TWP semi solid pro series?
Yes, it is an option on this page.
Wondering what black walnut 1504 will look like on this “young” fir siding.Guessing it will really darken the grain, but won’t be as dark overall as the swatch shows, because of the young bright fir?
The only way to know how it will look for certain on your wood is to test a sample.
does your stain come in quarts? if so where can i order. i just need touch ups
No, they do not. Gallon is the smallest size.
My high school agriculture classes/FFA Chapter is building a livestock barn on campus. We are going with a dark brown metal roof, and matching metal brown metal doors with white trim. We have locally sourced 3/4″X8″ rough cut Eastern Red Cedar boards to put up as siding. We have the cedar boards strip stacked in our shop out of the sun. We’d like to use your semi-solid product. What color will give us the darkest brown finish. We don’t expect it to match the doors…actually we want it a bit lighter.
Charcoal or Cabin Fever.
Which is darker, Boulder or Thunderstorm? Thanks!
Thunderstorm a little bit. Varies based on wood type and age of the wood.
Spanish moss semi-solid
Thunderstorm semi-solid
We stripped TWP stain from old deck boards (we have a mix of new and old boards) using Restore A Deck stripper on Wednesday. Today is Friday and we have not used the Restore A Deck Brightener yet. We are waiting for the TWP Semi-Solid in Seafoam to be back in stock and we then plan on cleaning and brightening the entire deck before staining. Is this a good plan or should we brighten the deck boards we stripped now?
You can wait at this point.
I have an 9 yr old 15′ x 27′ deck that was previously stained with Behr Cedar Natural tone semi-transparent waterproofing stain and sealer. I need to replace 25% of the boards that are rotting. Should I replace the boards first then wait, strip, brighten and stain? Or strip then replace the bad boards? With a mix of old and new wood should I use TWP 100 (I live in Georgia) or should I use a Semi-solid due to the mix of aged wood?
You cannot stain the new wood yet. See here.

Semi solid would blend better when time.
What stain works best in Tallahassee Florida? I would like a light color.
Use the TWP 115 Honeytone.
What type of stain works best for fence applications in Louisiana?
TWP 1500 or 100 Series.
What Series of TWP stain is good for exterior decks?
The TWP 100 or 1500 Series.
Does this include the semi solid offering? Which series is semi solid in? Getting ready to strip and stain exterior deck and was planning on using the semi solid stain. Which lasts longer?
The semi-solid colors will offer longer UV protection for a deck.

Read on one of the questions TWP can not be applied over existing semi transparent stain. Is that just the clear or all products? I have a deck that was added on to another deck that was previously stained with an oil based product.
Whenever you switch brands of stain you should remove the prior coating.
Can you put TWP clear over a previously stained wood beams that will be power washed to be cleaned?
No, you cannot apply TWP over a different brand of stain. That will need to be removed first.
