Have installed new kiln-dried pressure-treated Southern pine boards on my deck. Do these boards need to weather before applying the stain? If so, how long? I was thinking about using a brightener before staining-is that necessary? I am in North Carolina

TWP 100 is not allowed for NY. You will need to 1500. About 2-3 years.

Do you recommend using the cleaner and brightener (prior to the stain) on a recently built deck that has no prior stain? Also, because it’s near the end of August, I want to try to get it stained before the minimum recommended 4 months of weathering……otherwise, it will have to sit through the entire winter and wait a total of almost a year. I can’t count on staining in the spring as the pacific northwest has very wet springs. I was hoping to stain after about 2 months of weathering. What do you recommend?
Hello. I have a 20 year old, 20′ x 24′ deck constructed of pressure-treated pine. It was originally stained with Sikkens Cetol 123 system and held up well for many years (I followed Sikkens’ preparation instructions to the letter.) Several years ago I refinished the deck with Sikkens DEK products which only lasted 2 years before fading and peeling. Very disappointing.

I have completely sanded off all previous coatings and am working with bare wood which is still in excellent condition despite its age. If I apply TWP 100, how much time can elapse between the first and second coat? How long can I expect the product to last if I follow your instructions (I live in Cleveland, OH)? What is involved in restoring the deck once the product begins to fade or gray?

Thank you.
TWP 100 is not allowed in Ohio so you will need to use the 1500. TWP typically lasts about 2-3 years on a horizontals area before needing another coat. After sanding you should use the Gemini Restore Kit for final prep. TWP is applied wet on wet:

We’re thinking of purchasing the 5-gallon TWP 100 to seal/stain/protect a new fence + gate:
1) Age of wood: “brand new”
2) Type of wood: Redwood for fence & gate; there is a decorative border above the gate that is pressure-treated.
3) Condition of wood: unfinished
4) Never been stained
5) Area total (gate + fence) = 750 sq ft.

Hard to say for sure. If you do apply a second coat after the first coat has dried you will need to apply a very light coat and wipe off any excess stain that does no penetrate after 30 minutes.

Originally treated years 1, 2, and 5 with Penofin. Used Restore-a-deck cleaner and brightener year 8 followed by TWP (100? not sure) Rustic Oak same year.
Now color is badly blotched, even boot tracks-I believe mainly from chemicals used to decontaminate and disinfect hot tub in year 9 (last year). Was planning on basically repeated what I did year 8 unless you have a better suggestions. Thanks for your help.
If the finish is uneven you might want to strip this time with the RAD Stripper and use the RAD Brightener after.

It will dry but it may stay shiny since it was not done wet on wet. Tackiness will go away.

Yes all TWP stains are semi-transparent that show the grain of the wood. You cannot get cedar to match IPE. Might want to try to get a few samples and mix them together. Maybe a mixture of Rustic and Dark Oak would be somewhat close.

Knots will tent to be lighter in color when stained. The stain will cover these but they still might be a little lighter after drying.
Hello-

I have used TWP 103 Dark Oak for two yearly applications on my deck, which was built 3 years ago. (The first stain was one year after the installation.) The stain does not appear to be holding in some areas and looks “scuffed off” compared to other areas. When new stain is applied, it takes it lightly and does not hold for more than a few months at a time.

We have decided to paint the boards to get a more consistent look, but we would like to go to a lighter cedar wood color than the .dark oak.

Can please you advise what would be recommended to cover over top (without stripping) possibly using an exterior paint or opaque stain that will accept the TWP 103 product underneath?

Thank you for your help.

K Grube
That is more of question for the solid color stain/paint brand you will be using as to how they want it prepped. I would guess that they will say to strip off the 103 to be certain.

Our deck is about 15 years old, made with pressure treated decking and in pretty decent shape (I’ll be replacing about a half-dozen boards on the deck surface). We have powerwashed and sanded it in preparation for stain, but as you can see in the pictures, some of the original stain has absorbed into the knots in the wood.

Because ee would like to keep the deck gray, I’m wondering if the TWP 100 Cape Cod Gray stain will cover the remaining old stain sufficiently to have a decent end result on both the vertical and horizontal surfaces. Thanks.

Hard to say for sure on those posts and railings as it depends on the old brand and the type of stain it was. Can you sand most of it off?
Well, thanks for your answer, but I guess it doesn’t matter. I just discovered that I can’t use the TWP 100 stain in MA,and the TWP 1500 doesn’t come in grey. Back to the drawing board.

Use the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep. You will need about 4 of these for all your wood. Stain with TWP 100 Series. For both fence and deck you will need roughly 30 Gallons for two coats.
