1 year old red western cedar. Full sun. vertical side of a house. Previous stain sherwin williams water based semi transparent. Failure at 1 year with mildew and pealing. Plan is to use restore a deck cleaner and brightener then sand to original color and to completely remove old stain. After sanding do you recommend anything prior to applying TWP?
We recently had a deck and boat house stained. The contractor used a Behr product (natural stain) water base and the problem was the color. We requested cedar tone and he applied natural. We want to re-stain with TWP 100 cedar tone. The contactor plans on using a foam based cleaner to clean surface before application. Will we be ok going forward with TWP 100?
No. You cannot apply TWP (or any other brand) on top of the Behr. You will need to remove the Behr and that requires stripping and sanding. Behr is not easy to remove, especially when just applied.
We have a 10 year old deck made of pressure treated lumber. We live in Iowa so our winters are brutal and summers are scorching. Deck is 1,000 sq ft and sunny 90% of the day and southern facing. We have no pets and one teenager so the traffic area is primarily from the patio sliding door to the grill. The wood is in decent shape (very mild warping, some splits) because we have to clean and restain every year. Should 100 or 200 or 1500 be used in our case? I would be thrilled if we only had to restain every 3 years.

Stained my deck last fall, and it looked a little blotchy. In early March, now, there is not the luster that I envisioned, and the water on the deck is pooling not beading.

What can or should I do?

Mike
TWP is not supposed to have a shine as it is a penetrating stain, not filming. It also is a breathable coating so it is not going to bead water but “shed” water. Since it was a little blotchy last year, we would suggest a very light cleaning to remove any dirt. Apply a very light coat of the TWP. This should even out the appearance and give the deck an enhanced the overall appearance as well.
I stained my deck about a year ago it worked great. Recently I noticed a burn mark on one of the boards… I preceeded to sand the burn mark out… When I tried resanding the stain would not take now the board does not match. Is there anything I can do? Should I have waited longer after I sanded to reapply stain?
When you sand the wood is reduces the TWP’s ability to soak in. This could result in a lighter color and possibly some filming of the stain on top of the wood instead of soaking into the wood. Not much you can do about it besides letting it weather after the sanding for a few months.
