At best I will have 28-36 hrs of dry weather after applying TWP 100.
Doesn’t look good by waiting as needing 48 hrs to dry after a rain really complicated things. What is the minimum time for stain to set up before a rain event.
12-24 hours.
I own a restoration company and have used TWP since the mid 90’s. I’ve stained near 1000 decks. Ive had it rain on some decks in a far shorter time, 2 hours, and no adverse effects. A lot will do with the temperature and if your deck is in direct sunlight or not. If it’s shaded, takes far greater time to dry, so be mindful of the forecast and use live radar. So if it happens to rain shortly after it’s stained, don’t think it’s ruined. Most likely it’ll be fine. If water is allowed to sit for a long period of time,(24 hours plus) you can get water rings, so wipe up puddling if needed after the rain. It is oil based, so it does repel water immediately.
Age of wood – New
Type of wood – Bald Cypress timber columns/beams and 2×6 T&G spruce ceiling/decking
Wood Condition – New and all is sanded all sides. The cypress columns/timbers do have some checking.
There is no finish currently on either the spruce or cypress.
I am in Western North Carolina near Tennessee on a mountain at around 3000′ elevation. The exposure is due north.
Which product do you recommend and do you custom mix colors? The ceiling will be well protected but the column/beams will be exposed to the elements for the most part.
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
After the wait and prep, use th TWP 100 Series. We do not custom mix.
I recently bought the TWP 100 and applied it to my deck two days ago after prepping it with RAD stripper/brightener. I think I applied the stain too heavily as it is very tacky to the touch and the color still comes off on my hand. Will I have to strip it again and redo it? Or just wait longer for it to harden?
It will dry, just give it more time.
How soon after application may we walk on the deck?
About 24 hours.
Just started to apply 105 cape cod gray to my never treated, 1 yr old fence. I prepped as directed and had friend apply the stain.
When I got home I realized it was not the color I wanted. It’s very opaque and almost white. I live in a neighborhood with a HOA, and the cape cod gray will not be approved.
I should have, and thought I had ordered the 106 prairie gray. Only 3, 5′ x 6′ panels stained on one side. I only ordered 2 gallons, which will not complete the job anyway.
Questions:
1. Can I remove the stain already applied and apply new color?
2. Can I return 1 unopened gallon of 105 cape cod gray and order 5 gallons of the 106 prairie gray?
Thanks for your assistance.

1. Yes, you will need to strip and brighten with this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
2. See here: https://www.twpstain.com/refund
As for the prairie gray, might be best to get a sample first: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Had issues with bad stain application from another company a couple years ago. Just power washed, stripped and then sanded the wood, live in Michigan, deck faces south with no shade. Do you suggest TWP100?
Yes, the TWP 100 Series.
Building an arbor out of pressure treated yellow pine(6x6s , 2×12, 2×4,etc.) The wood is new and in good condition, which series will work best and how long should I wait to stain. Thanks, Tom
See there about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
As for series to use, that would depend on where you live?
Live in northeast Georgia
Use the TWP 100 Series.
1. Im putting up a new deck for around my pool. Would you recommend the 100 or the 1500?
2. Should I wait to apply the stain until the wood is weathered? Or could I stain it right away?
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
As for which to use, that would depend on where you live?
I live in CT. Not sure what the regulations are here.
If I could use either, what would you recommend for around a pool once I let the wood weather till next summer?
You need the TWP 1500 for CT.
Hello,
We used a stain sealer 20 years ago from a company in the Washington State area. My question is what would be the best product that you sell that will darken & seal ? Thank you for your help in advance.
You would have to strip and brighten this for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Once removed, use the TWP 1500 in Dark Oak or Black Walnut.
Thank youuuuuuuuuu
can you ship to PA
The TWP 1500 can be shipped to PA: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
Distributor in Wisconsin
We sell online from our website with shipping directly to you. https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
You cannot ship 100 series to Illinois
I need a dealer near elk horn or lake Geneva.
I have a 600 sq ft pressure treated deck, 20 years old and in good condition in Denver CO. Weather is hot summer, rain, hail, snow, high UV due to altitude. Sanded to bare wood 3 years ago and stained with oil based semi transparent stain (Cabots?). Deck is half covered by a roof and half open. The open half is much more faded. Covered half looks nearly new. I want to use TWP Ceadartone. What procedure do you recommend?
Use this for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
After, stain with the TWP 100 Series.
Strip it all to bare wood, brighten, sand, hand brush no more than two boards at the same time going with the grain. Do not stop until each board is complete or you will have overlap marks.
Do you have distributors in Canada?
No. Only the TWP 200 Series can be shipped there: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
Can I install the 1500 series over previously installed 100 series? Also what is best color match for 101 Cedartone Natural? Existing stain is roughly 4-5 years old, what process would you recommend for application?
Prep with this first and then you can: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Use the TWP 1503 Natural for the closest match to 101 Cedartone Natural.
I sanded off the old stain (different brand) – do I still need to do the deck wash/brightener stuff before putting down TWP100?
Yes.
My PT pine deck is about 10 yrs old. Had 3 types of stain over that time with stripping & sanding in between. Last used an oil based semi transparent but has all peeled off horizontal surfaces. Now planning to sand, wash, brighten and stain using your TWP 100 Dark Oak & Gemini cleaner combo kit. We live in IA. Would you recommend this approach?
Yes. Make sure all of the old stain is removed.
I have a new deck (4 months old) of pressure treated yellow pine, I would like a gray driftwood finish do you offer anything
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
We have a Cape Cod Gray but not a Driftwood Gray.
Did you discontinue Honeytone 100 series
No. You can order it: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series

For maximum effectiveness to maintain the color of a new cedar fence, is it necessary to cover your fence with a clear coat polyurethane AFTER you have stained it with TWP 100?
You can never apply a sealer or coating over a deck stain like TWP. It will peel.
We applied a coat of the 100 stain on raw cedar that I waited for the mill glaze to wear off of. Cleaned the wood as directed and then had an issue come up that prevented us from adding a second coat which I think It needed. It has been about 36 hours now. Can I app,y again directly over this coat as it is?
No. Did you follow these directions for new wood?
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Existing decks (200 sq ft), how much stain do I need?
2 gallons.
2 gallos for 1 or 2 coats?
2 gallons for 2 coats applied wet on wet.
The decks are 21 yo pressure treated wood, and was previously stained with oil-based. Both are exposed to the sun and in shades 50% during the day. My contractor said that he’ll power wash it first.
Newer treated pine deck and screened in porch floor that has been sitting for one year and never stained. The deck is in the Georgia sun for most of the day. I am planning on staining with TWP100 Prairie Gray. Hopefully, 1 coat. What prep would you recommend prior to staining? I do plan on brushing on stain in early June.
Prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Approx. 2 yrs ago I applied TWP 116 to my new 20′ x 14′ deck here in Raleigh, NC that is exposed to sun 7 hrs per day after it was 3 months installed. Now it is faded and seems a new coat is needed as the wood is slightly splintering and color has faded. I was thinking of moving to the 200 series to get more oil on it so it lasts longer than 2 years. Three questions:
1) Can I use 200 series over the 100 series that I applied with the above conditions and will it last longer and color stay truer?
2) Is it possible to move to a gray color over existing red color of the 116?
3) What is best way to prep given the above conditions?
Thanks in advance.
1. No.
2. No.
3. Use this kit and you can then use the TWP 200 Series in any color

Thanks! I’ll take a look, dig some more and ensure I properly apply the next iteration of TWP.
I would like to use TWP100 (Honeytone) to stain pressure-treated (ground contact) decking boards.
They were installed 1 year ago. How sure the boards be treated/cleaned prior to applying TWP100
? i.e., cleaned with Gemini Restore a Deck Kit or bleach solution (25%)? Should I add Dawn to the bleach solution? If so, how much? Thanks..
Prep with the Gemini Restore Kit.
I live in Greensboro, NC.
Where can I purchase 2 gal. of TWP100- Honeytone?
On this link: https://www.twpstain.com/twp100-1gallon-detail
I recently pressure washed my gates and fence. I don’t remember what stain I used almost 12 years ago. I read the reviews for TWP 100 and I wanted to give it a try. I’m just outside L.A. in Woodland Hills and it gets really hot here in the summer. I don’t want to change the color too much (see photo of before and after pressure washed) and it would be great to see some of the imperfections in the wood. Which TWP would you recommend?
When you are pressure washing, you should use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
The TWP 1500 is what you need to CA. The 100 is not allowed there.
I already pressure washed it a week ago. Looks good right now. Do I still need to brighten? Does the 1500 come in the cedar?
The 1500 does come in Cedartone.
Brightener and cleaner would help the appearance but if you are happy with the cleaning, then you can stain now.
My 2nd story covered cedar deck was last treated about 5 years ago with a Behr stain, which is almost completely worn off. In August 2018 I had a lot of the deck boards replaced and new stairs built using cedar. This summer we will have a deck company power wash everything and then apply TWP 101 Cedartone. Is that sufficient or do they also have to do the Restore Kit prep?
100% of the old stain must be removed and the use of the RAD prep products will aid with this. never a good idea to just use a pressure washer for prep without proper prep products. Too much pressure can damage the wood.
Installed a new privacy fence in Michigan at the end of July last year. I did not apply any stain and left it bare through winter. 6×6 PT Pine posts with Rough Cut Cedar slats. Will I need to prep the wood with cleaner/brightener first? Since it’s new, is one coat recommended at first? I have 66 linear feet at 6 foot high. Will 5 Gallons be good if only one coat is needed for both sides?
Yes, prep first. Two coats for this rough sawn fence wood. You will need about 7-8 gallons.
time to renew TWP stain on deck after 3 years…do i need to complete the initial process (cleaner and stain)
over again?
Yes, use the Gemini Restore Kit for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
new rough cut cedar fence 3520 sq ft how much stain and do i need to prep> twp 100
Rough sawn wood will not need to be prepped as long as it clean and dry. For the two coats applied wet on wet, you will need 30-35 gallons for 3520 sq feet. Coverage does vary based on application method and wood porosity.
8 years
Cedar pickets with PT pine posts.
Rough
Not Previously stained
I live in Houston TX where sun is really hot and summers humid. Want to stain my approx. 300 lineat feet of 6ft fence. Different areas get different amounts of sunlight from full shade to full sun. What type of stain 100 or 1500 would you recommend? How much stain will I need?
Use the TWP 100 Series. For the sq footage (300 x 6 x 2 (both sides) = 3600), you will need about 30-35 gallons for the two coats.
what is the minimum temperature for application?
50-55 degrees.
I have 170 linear feet of new western cedar fence that is 8 ft tall. It is also board on board and I need to stain both sides. I’m in Dallas, TX and the fence will get a lot of sun. What do you recommend, how many gallons and do I need 2 coats wet on wet?
Is the wood rough sawn or smooth wood? You cannot stain new smooth right away. If rough sawn, you can do now as long as the wood is clean and dry. About 20-30 gallons for the two coats applied wet on wet.
Yes. It is rough sawn.
I have built a brand new deck with deck seating all the way around it. Can I use the 100 series in a color for both the decking and the seating or should the deck be done in another series? Also, can I add a coat of the clear on top of the color to help the coating?
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the TWP in the same series for both areas. You cannot apply a top coat of clear on the stain. It will not soak in and will not help.
Redwood deck being installed currently in Colorado. What color TWP will best show off the beautiful patterns and colors while offering great uv protection? Also was concerned about a winter’s worth of snow before treating/sealing the deck. Better to weather 4 months? Temps too cold to apply so really not much choice anyway. Best prep method for Redwood in April?
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
any color that you like will work. See here for some pictures: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
I have a 6 yr old timber frame home. Exterior posts and frames need to be restained. I’ve chosen TWP 100. Surfaces have been power washed. Should the wet on wet application be applied?
Yes, that is correct.
Looking to stain my brand new Cedar Deck in Colorado, and wondering the best stain to use and what is the best color choice to preserve the natural cedar look. It’s approx. 180 sq/ft, is one gallon enough? Thanks!

See this for color help: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
See this for amounts needed: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-deck-stain-calculator
Thanks for the info. I’m still unsure which is the better choice for us, the 1500 or the 100. We’re thinking of either the Honeytone or Cedartone. It seems that the 1500 is great for people who can’t get the 100, we live in CO, so we can get either. The deck is North facing, so ample sun in the summer, but zero in the winter. Any direction here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Use the 100 Series.
When I did the calculator for amount needed it says 2 coats “wet on wet”. Do I need two coats and what does wet on wet mean?
See this article that explains this: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
Need to know what I ordered in the past. Just bought 101 TWP Stain. It is to dark brown. Know I accidentally ordered this two years ago and did not use. Then ordered a lighter Cedar Stain. I like the color of the lighter stain. Is there a 100 Cedar Stain? Can you check please so that I can order the lighter stain.
The only past order we see in your email address is from 2015 and that was for TWP 101 Cedartone. The only lighter tinted color is the 115 Honeytone.
How do you remove TWP 300 from deck? There are many areas that you can scrap off with your fingernail. Some areas turned black. And after all said and done, is the 1500 series the best stain for the deck floor? Also, which is the best stain for the deck siding which drops down our slope and has a door. It’s about 15″. Thanks
You will need to sand off the 300 Series. Use the TWP 1500 for all surfaces.
What is the proper prep for TWP 100 on new KDAT 2”x6” southern pine wood?
See this: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/kdat-and-twp-wait-period-for-new-wood/
I live in Oregon and have an ipe hardwood deck that faces south. Lots of rain and lots of sun. I would like to use the TWP 100 and expect to put on one maintenance coat every year. Can I do this indefinitely or will I have to strip it down and sand it every so often?
If you clean and brighten with the Gemini Kit annually as your prep, you should be okay:
https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Only one coat of the TWP for IPE.
We have a redwood deck that has 4 coats of clear & semi-transparent. These are going to be sanded to bare wood what do you suggest for the 320′ seat redwood deck?
The TWP 100 or TWP 1500 Series would be the correct products.
18 year old cedar deck. It was completely sanded2 years ago and Cabot oil was used. Just applied Wet & Go. It has not been power washed. Would like to use TWP. What do I need to do?
You would need to strip all the wood down to the bare wood if you want to use the TWP.
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
We just stained our fence with the rustic stain and it is slightly more red then we wanted. If we came back with another coat of Dark Oak would we get a more brown tone or would it make a crazy color?
It will not be able to “take” another coat now. Best would be to wait a few months or a year and remove the Rustic if you want to switch colors.
I have a 4 month old cedar fence. I would like to protect it and stop it from turning gray. I also don’t want to change the color of the fence. Which TWP product should I purchase? Thanks
Unfortunately, what you want to do is not possible. For UV protection from graying, you must have a color/tint in your stain. This will also enhance or change the color of your wood. This is true for all brands of deck stains, not just TWP. The lightest tinted TWP color is Honeytone. See here for some pictures: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-115-honeytone
15 year old rough sawn waney pine siding that was stained with a Cabot stain about 10 years ago. It didn’t weather well as you can see in the before and after shots.
I power washed with sodium percolate this spring but was unable to complete the job. You can see how quickly it grayed out.
I would like to apply the TWP 1515 or TWP 101 this fall. How would you suggest I proceed?
Thanks Dave
Best to use the RAD Stripper/Brightener Kit and pressure washing for the prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Stain with the TWP 1500 Series.
How do you remove TWP stain spots/drips (Black Walnut) from brick pavers? Mineral spirits did not work. Please advise.
Try a graffiti remover cleaner and pressure washing. You should find some in the paint department of a local store.
I built a redwood deck about 6 months ago and it has not been stained previously. I want to protect the wood in some way but I don’t want to alter the color too much because it looks great as is. Is there any tint in the TWP 100 series that looks good on redwood or should I go with the clear? Thank you for your help.
Clear will not provide UV protection from UV graying. Must have a tint and the tint will enhance the color. Best to try a couple of samples for testing: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
