26 year old deck. Pressure treated pine. Some parts in good condition-others kind of rough. Some boards replaced. Stained originally with pinofen. Has been pressure washed and sanded, mostly down to bare wood. Live in Texas. Around 1000 sq ft.
When were the new boards replaced? Send pictures.
Difference between 109 s as bd 1500?
???
I used the stain and it looks great but it has been 24 hours and spots are still wet.
Should I leave it alone and let it dry?
Yes.
Wipe excess with dry cloth.
How to wet on wet second coat?
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
I own a restoration company and have used TWP since the mid 90’s. Today I’ve opened two single gallons of Pecan and they look and smell way different than hundreds of gallons of Pecan I’ve used. Did you guys change the formula? Smells like wet, decaying grass, (compost)and looks like a runny, chocolate milk. I’m very reluctant on using this on my clients deck atm.
No changes to the formula or performance. Make sure to mix it well. it may have settled.
is there a warranty or guarantee with this product for decks and siding? we will actually be using on a log home. we have used it in the past many many years ago and not sure if its the right choice as we are needing to reseal
You can read it on the product data sheet: https://www.twpstain.com/pdf/TWP-100-PRO-SERIES.pdf
My husband likes Cedartone for refinishing our old red cedar gazebo. (I don’t want a red or orange appearance.) Is this a popular color? I like pecan. My question is if we go with Cedartone, could I change to pecan in a few years if we would like to try that color? Would that require more prep work? Thank you.
Cedartone is the most popular color. If you switch to Pecan at a later time it would be best to strip and brighten for prep.
30 yr old red cedar gazebo, last stained with a semi-opaque water based Flood stain about 8-10 years. Plan to use TWP 100 wood stain. Prep: Pressure washed, and now sanding off remaining stain with random orbital palm sander. I’m planning on ordering a 5 gallon of stain and Restore-a-deck prep. Do I need cleaner or Stripper? I live in SE Missouri. (I have never used 5 gallon can before). How do you pour from it?
Here is a picture
If you sand and remove all of the old stain then use the Gemini Cleaner and Brightener Kit for the prep. YOu pop the top off of the can and then mix and pour from it.
thank you! If I can’t get the stain completely off, would the Stripper work?
Yes but use both stripper additives: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives
I don’t understand which is better for a new pressure treated deck between 100 and 1500 series?
Which lasts the longest before needing to be stripped? DOES it ever need to be stripped?
They last the same. Which one to use depends on where you live? Also, see here about new wood and TWP: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Twp pro 100 series is it available in 1 gallon cans? I only see 100 series.
i used the 100 series 12 months ago on new Cedar railings and the pressure treated pine deck floor needs staining. The railings are covered in mold and mildew so I want the most mildew resistant stain available.
They are the same thing, just label change: https://www.twpstain.com/twp100-1gallon-detail
I have just pressure washed rough cut pressure treated pine 6” board fence that was installed November 2019. Is TWP 100 cape cod the best for gray semi-transparent. How many gallons for 1300 SF? Also 1 or 2 coats? Thanks
Just one coat and about 5-7 gallons for Cape Cod Gray.

I am looking into pressure washing and staining a large boat pier & dock with TWP-100 Cedartone. The pier is (weathered) pressure treated pine and may have been treated with Thompson’s water seal at some point. I would like to remove the weathered appearance, bringing back the new wood look and stain/preserve. Which products and methods do you recommend using to restore the like new look before staining with TWP100?
Best to prep with the Gemini Restore Kit while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
How long does TWP stain last if unopened in the can?
Few years or longer.
Hi, my fence is one year old. Can I just do 1 coat? (I also have the Gemini restore a kit). To be honest, I dont really wanna spend the money to buy 2 more 5 gallon buckets if I dont absolutely need it.
Is the wood smooth or rough sawn cut?
Smooth
One coat should work but it really depends on how porous the wood is.
One more question. how long after using the restore kit can I wait to stain? I only ask because we constantly have thunderstorms in the forecast so it is always a gamble if one hits or not.
Stain within a couple of weeks.
We stripped and then brightened our 20 yr. old cedar deck, then used orbital sander to smooth down rough walking surfaces. Do we need to pressure wash before stain application or just remove sanding dust with leaf blower?
Use the brightener after the sanding and hen lightly pressure wash off to open up the pores of the wood for the stain.
Just to make sure you know about my process so far…I already stripped and “brightened” the deck before I I sanded. Now that I’ve sanded, do I need to use the brightener again? Thanks for all of your advice!
Yes, brighten again. Helps to open up the wood grain so the stain can soak in better.
OK, thanks!
My deck (cedar) has been stripped, brightened — stain TWP Cedartone 101 started to be applied but was splotchy and dark in spots due to fuzz. That was removed, now the contractor is hand sanding d the surface (60 grit), the fuzz in off but now I see what appears to be black mold. Ideas?
Your pictures are too small to see anything. If it is mild, you should use this kit after the sanding while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Thanks, it appears that the grey spots are isolated around areas of some nails. Could there be some connection with the nails and water?
That is rust from your nails due to removing the protective coating while sanding. You need a brightener to help with removal. You may also need to replace the nails or acres with news to prevent it from coming back.
Hi? The deck is now sanded and gray nail stains are gone. Can they stain. If they use brightener won’t the stains return? Using TWP 100 Cedartone 101
If it is rust it will return no matter what when the deck gets wet. The only way to fix is to replace the nails.
Was the Second coat needed? It did not penetrate in some spots? Also will adding a second coat in the fall be beneficial?
Second coat. How do you wipe it off. Just a paint rag? Also 1/2 is done with 2 coats. How do I know if the second cost will take?
Just leave alone. It will dry and cure.
Can a 5 gallon container of TWP 100 be shipped to my farm property in Upstate NY?
No, not allowed in NY. Use the 1500 Series.
I’m pressure washing a wood picket fence previously stained. I’ll let it dry then spray and brush 2 coats of twc 100. As long as I remove any stained wood, I’m good right? What lifespan can I expect for this product in a central Texas climate?
Yes, correct. On a fence, about 3-5 years.
Great! So I’ve got 1350 sf to cover, 2 coats, I’ve got 10 gallons. At 300 sf/gallon I’m good. The second coat won’t take as much as the first right?
10 Gallons will probably not be enough. Closer to 12-15 gallons for two coats and also I assume you counted both sides of the fence?
It’s just one side of the fence but I did consider that. Bummer about the stain but I’m know it’s no good to run out mid project. Thanks y’all.
Can I just power wash the fence and stain a similar color over what’s left of the old?
No, you have to remove the old stain.
Hi – I stained my entire deck with TWP 100, but ran out of stain before I finished the second “wet on wet” coat. I will have to wait a few weeks to get more stain – will there be any issues if I apply the second coat on the dried first coat?
As long as the wood is absorbent you should be fine.
My wood deck has a Olympic solid stain on it now. Can I place yep 1500 over it
No. You cannot use TWP over a different brand of stain, especially a solid stain.
Ive used TWP 100 and love the product. In preparation for restraining my siding, the house was power washed and some of the old pigment came down on my patio cement brick and has left splotches of color on the new unsealed bricks. I’ve tried several water based cement cleaners to remove the spots but they don’t touch the stains at all. Can you help me find something that can remove the stains please?
Try a graffiti remove cleaner.
I did, no results. Does it have to be oil based to lift the stains?
Not really. Try this with pressure washing. It should help. Motsenbocker’s Lift Off 4 Remover for Spray Paint Graffiti
My deck was stripped and brightened with TWP products (see pictures) I am concerned about the fuzzy white residue that was left. Thoughts? Next steps? (Seattle area). Stripper was applied, then water pressured off.
Make sure to brighten the wood. The stain when applied will help with this so it is not noticeable.
I have a log home in West Virginia I just bought. It’s 26 years old and hasn’t been treated in several years by the looks of it. What prep do you recommend? I am thinking the 100 series with bug juice is needed as we have lots of carpenter bees. What are your recommendations, please?
We would need to see pictures for prep help.
One close shot, one farther away.
Strip and brighten for the prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Okay, thank you!
What is the difference between the TWP 100 Series and the TWP 1500 Series. If I use TWP 100 series in the past and now am stripping and brightening — can I switch to TWP 1500 Series? I would also like to know when to use the Gemini products to strip and brighten vs. the RAD system of stripping and brightening. (I live in the Seattle area)
https://www.twpstain.com/difference-between-twp-100-and-1500-series
Stay with the 100 Series. Gemini Kit is a cleaner/brightener while the Restore-A-Deck Kit is a stripper/Brightener.
Thanks for the prompt reply, this helps. I am considering hiring a contractor to do this work – many go right to pressure washing as the way to strip and most do not suggest the brightening stage. Thoughts?
They need to use the proper prep products for max results.
I have a 15 year old deck that needs your Restore product followed by your stain. What are the circumstances that would help me decide between the 100 series and the 1500 series. I don’t really understand the difference. Thank you.
That depends on where you live?
Central Pennsylvania, in a rural area……
Only the 1500 is allowed there.
Thank you for your help. I will order on Tuesday.
I applied TWP100 to a new pine deck, which dried for about 8 months before cleaned and stained. After about two months, the stain is starting to fade and not repel water. Did the wood absorb all the stain? Should I apply a second coat?
No, it is fine. Just clean and recoat next year.
Considering using the stain on a new wood with live edges outdoor picnic table and benches in Wisconsin…Is the stain appropriate to outdoor furniture?
Yes on furniture but see this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I’m building a rough sawn timber pavilion and have stained pieces with TWP 100 before I’ve assembled and it makes it so much easier. I’m getting ready to deck the roof with tongue and groove but it’s not rough sawn but dimensional. Is it okay to stain before I install rather than wait as this roof will be shingled on top and will not really weather, and staining 650 sq ft overhead would be a pain, or can you not recommend the way I would like to do this?
No, you cannot prestain. See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
25 year old pressure treated pine deck that has been planed down to remove nearly all oxidized wood. Wood is in fairly good shape with some cracking and has never been stained or treated with water repelling product.
Let it naturally weather for a couple of months and then prep with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
this way the TWP can soak in correctly after you planned the deck.
I have a 3 year old large mahogany deck that I am power washing and need to preserve. A transparent oil stain by a competitor has been suggested. Since TWP stain performance ratings are significantly higher, which of your stains would you recommend? I want the beauty of the mahogany to come through the finish. I am in NY state.
Try TWP 1516 Rustic color.
What compound is in TWP 100 that is not in TWP 200 that allows it to fall under the VOC rules of Canada?
It is not a compound that causes VOCs but home much evaporates.
Thank you for the reply, The problem is I have use TWP 100 cedar tone and it has lasted on my Log Cabin 5 years the product is Brilliant, but I have been told that the TWP 200 can not be use over top of the TWP 100 and I would have to strip the logs before applying the 200, I am not prepared to do this way to much work. What are my options?
Thanks
Just strip and brighten for prep. That is your only option.
I am building a playhouse for my kids. I built a platform which is 4’ off the ground out of treated pine. I bought untreated pine for the house that is going on the platform. I didn’t think about this but there will be over hangs under the roof that will be exposed to elements and I’m wondering if 1.) can this be applied to an untreated pine (just bought from Lowe’s and never been treated) and 2.) will the wood be fine/durable after being treated with TWP 100.
I just built the platform so I’m still going to wait 4 months on that
Yes, TWP would work for this.
The previous owners of our property applied Valspar deck stain and sealer. Trying to prepare the gates to refinish I found one side of the fence finish cracked and pealing. Wire brushing and sanding this side removed most, but only most, of the finish and revealed grayed wood beneath. The other side of the gate neither brushed nor sanded, but the finish can be peeled with just a fingernail, coming off like a stretchy latex. Definitely not the way to remove the finish on the gates. Please recommend what I might try with likelihood of success so that I can refinish the gates using TWP100.
Post a picture.
3589 is west side of fence palings showing peeling finish with clear wind-sculpted (sand blasted?) texture beneath
05810 is close-up of same thing shown in 3591
0581 is the east side of this same fence portion after wire-brushing and sanding
0588 shows oversprayed black paint on top of finish
0587 shows unfinished edges. Some edges have more than enough finish.
You will probably have sand to remove as a stripper will not work.
Purchased 20 gallons of TWP 100 for boat dock decking at a condo complex. Applied 15 gallons a week ago & 5 days later one of the boat docks was submerged do to a rise in the river level.
1) Now there is a white residue or emulsion that exist within the sealer. Tried rubbing it off, but to no avail. Any suggestions ? Should I try recoating it ?
2) The color purchased, Honeytone, dried way too yellow. I have 5 gallons left (5 gal pail); can I add darker stain to the Honeytone to make it browner ? (i.e. maybe add Pecan or even Dark Oak).
Please assist.
1. There is nothing in the TWP that would create a white residue so it is either coming from the wood or something is laying on top of the stain. Without knowing what it is, there is not a way to suggest how to remove it. You may have to recoat it.
2. Add Dark Oak to brown it some.
Thanks for the speedy reply. Can I add any petroleum based Dark Oak stain……..like form the local home improvement store ? And any suggestions on ratio’s of stain to add ?
No, it has to be a TWP 100 stain. The ratio would be your color choice as to how dark you would like it to be.
We stained about five years ago. Going to stain again now. We used either Redwood or Rustic. Can’t figure out. Can you help? Thank you.
Looks like Rustic.
I’d like to use an oil based stain for marine decking that is pressure treated wood and is 15 years old. It has been pressure washed and looks good. Which product would you recommend?
Thanks,
Gary
Use the TWP 100 series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
What is the expected life span for TWP 100 Rustic 116? How do I know when a maintenance coat is required? We applied this stain per instructions in Sept 2018. It still looks good but it is slightly fading and losing some of the water beading characteristics.
Every 2-3 years is normal. You can do this year or next. Prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
My question is I have a new cedar pergola I do like the cedar look . What would be best Twp 100 clear or your cedartone product
The TWP Clear will not provide UV protection from graying. Honeytone is the lightest tinted color. See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
which series would be best for cypress post?
TWP 1500.
Wood boards are new KDAT pine wood, verticals are 9 year old treated pine. Verticals are in moderate conditions and floor surface is new. Verticals have been stained with Sikkens ProLuxe 3 years ago. 12×12 outdoor deck in Madison WI. Can I apply TWP 100 over the sikkens proluxe on the verticals?
No, you will need to remove the Sikkens first of switching brands. See this for new KDAT wood tips as well: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/kdat-and-twp-wait-period-for-new-wood/
If you send some pictures of the Sikkens, we can help with the best way to remove it.
This is the railing with the sikkens, it is just dry now and there is nothing on the surface, I had a mixture of tung oil and limonene for an indoor project and the railing just drank it up. The deck is on the north facing side of the house in Wisconsin so sits under snow for 3 months or more per year and doesn’t see a tonne of direct light.
To remove the Sikkens, use the RAD Stripper Kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
With the Thickening Gell Additive as well.
I live in eastern Colorado. Semi arid with lots of sun and temperature extremes. What should I use on a new cedar pergola?
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
After wait and prep, use the TWP 100 Series.
We are wanting to stain/seal a camp house we are covering with cypress that was cut off of our land. The logs have been cut a few years but we just got them sawed into board and batten and have already put them up. We are concerned about splitting, cupping, warping. Should this be a concern and would your product help to prevent this and how long do we need to wait before applying it? we live in south Alabama. Suggestions please….
See here about prep and staining new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
The TWP would work great for this!
Unfortunately, you will be unable to seal both sides since it has already been installed. Board and batten does not seal well. Water has a tendency to leak behind batten strips. This is still the best product.
Five years age I used TWP 203 Cedar Gold stain on my log home. I don’t see it on your website. Is it still available? I need to stain my house again. Thank you.
On this link: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
I have cedar shutters on my my home that I have sanded off all of old stain back to the original cedar wood. The shutters are 15 years old, but in good condition. Do I need to do anything other than apply the TWP 100 prior? Also, is the TWP the best choice for these? Shutters face the western sunset and take a lot of heat/sun.
Final prep with the Gemini Restore Kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Use the TWP 1500 Series.
Can you put oil based paint over TWP
Probably not but that would be more of a question of the Paint Brand you use, than the TWP.
I am staining 6 cedar pavilions. All previously stained with TWP. Using same color. Since using same product, is it still recommended to apply 2 coats. If so, how long do I need to wait between coats? How many days of dry weather is recommended before applying? I see that at least 24 hours is required for drying before next rain event. Thanks.
Prep with the Gemini Restore Kit first. Wait 48 hours after prep or rain to stain. Apply one coat since this is a maintenance coat. It will need 12-24 hours to dry before any rain.
1-Is TWP safe to use on redwood furniture?
2-Which is best for redwood siding in Pa? 100 or 1500 series?
1. Yes
2. You have to use the 1500 for PA.
What is the difference between the 100 and the 1500 stain?
VOC compliance for certain states is the main difference. Not all states allow the 100 series.
