I’m in Michigan. I’ve been using 100 series for years and am trying to order 5 gallons and it’s telling me I can no longer buy 100 series in the USA when I try to place my order. What’s the deal?
TWP 100 Series is not allowed in MI anymore due to Michigan changing its VOC laws last year. You will need to switch to the 1500 Series.
Thanks. I didn’t know. I top dress every year I never had a problem with the 100 series penetrating on top of older stain. Will the 1500 penetrate the existing 100?
As long as you prep correctly with the Gemini Restore Kit, you can apply the 1500 Series over the 100 Series.
I have a log siding cabin that previously had a polyurethane finish on the outside that aged very poorly and turned black. I am in the process of sandblasting the cabin. Can I apply the TWP 100 series directly to the newly sanded siding or do I need some other preparation beforehand?
Good to stain after sandblasting for prep. No additional prep is needed.

I found you guys a few months ago looking for something better than what I was using. Penofin oil has been difficult with me spent the last three years or so stripping and re-applying. I did buy some TWP product and redid my stairs next to the deck to see how it would age against the Penofin. Please see the attached photo.
The deck must be “bone” dry before applying TWP 100 stain, as it is oil based and it would not adhere to a (water) wet (damp) deck.
Can I apply TWP 100 semi-transparent stain to a new PT deck (seasoned for 7 months in southwest Georgia) after cleaning when there is no visible water but the wood is damp to the touch?
New wood tips:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Cannot be damp and moisture % needs to be less than 15%.
Does the clear 100 series stain protect as well as the cedar tone 100 series stain?
The Clear has no UV protection and will gray naturally.

What’s the VOC % of TWP 100?
VOC is not a %, it is a level. The VOC level for the 100 Series is 550 VOC.
I am installing a 258 sq ft doug fir deck in a mountain area where the is snow. What is the best product for new wood?
See thsi about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
As to which series, that would vary based on where you live and what is allowed there. What state?
Can I use on Douglass Fir? Old stain has been stripped off. Need to apply wood conditioner?
If you stripped, brighten before staining.
I have 1600 sq feet of newly installed deck. I Let it dry for one month. Do I need to clean it? How much stain do I need?
It is not ready to be stained yet. See here.

Looking to restain a 5 year old PT deck. Previously stained with TWP-1516-1 Gallon Rustic Oak VOC Stain. Would like a solid same color. Half the deck is shaded. Roughly 450 sqft. Suggestions on type and prep required. It’s just been pressure washed.
We are sorry but TWP does not make a solid color stain.
Hello
Which stain is best for a composite deck?
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-pro-series
Has to be older composite deck that is porous.
How old should it be? How can I be sure? Do you sell 1/4 or some kind of sample to try it? We have a very large deck
Older trex or composites are a true mixture of wood and plastic and they are very porous. Newer trex/composites are actually 99% plastic and no stain will work on it.

What number TWP stain should I use over Menards wood decking pre stained with Pittsburg stain. Also witch number over wood 1/2 log on my house that I used TWP on last application 5 years ago?
You cannot apply TWP over a difference stain brand so you will need to strip and brighten the wood:
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
After, use the TWP 1500 for both.
What is the difference in the 100 and1500? I have a Cypress siding, and Cedar facia board. It’s almost a year old. What would be the best one and how long do they typically last before having to be redone?
I’m in south Louisiana.
They last the same. The main difference is VOC levels. You can use either in Louisiana.
Hi
Just put in a pressure treated boat dock, yellow pine grade2 micronized cooper azole from Pro’wood. I am in Sarasota, FL.
1) how long do I have to wait to stain?
and pre treat with your Gemini kit before the stain?
2) it will be exposed to heavy salt water. Should I use 100 or 200?
thank you
1. https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
2. The 100 Series.
I have a 7 yr old deck that I have stripped and brightened using the Gemini products. I was set to stain today after waiting 48 hrs after the brighten step. Forecast has now changed and it may rain this evening and tonight and tomorrow is now going to storm. Do I have to repeat the brightening step before staining when weather permits? Or just go ahead with staining? Also, how soon after applying stain can it rain? The cam says 48 hrs but I’ve read on the answer section that you’ve said 24hrs? Thank you!
No need to redo the prep, just let the wood dry out another 48 hours after the rain.
Moved into our new home and Eastern Iowa in July of 22. I am planning to stain this spring. We have a small raised second floor deck 10×10 facing south ( lots of sun) and an eight step staircase up to the second floor which is facing north. I decided on the TWP 120 Pecan and the Gemini restore a deck kit. This is the first time I’ve stained a deck. What is the best way to apply the stain excluding spraying, because it’s always windy here. I have a power washer for the cleaning do I also have to brush the cleaner on?
Thanks, Brian
Use stain pads and brushes to apply the stain: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/application-tools/brushes-stain-pads
You use a pump sprayer to apply prep products and then pressure wash off.
Will the prep products damage the grass when being power washed off
They should not but always prewet the grass and rinse with water when done.
I live in Vancouver Canada and I have been using TWP 101 Cedar Tone on my deck for over 30 years, and the deck still looks great. We have a wet climate here in the winter, and hot sun in the summer, similar to Seattle. I just give the deck a gentle power wash annually in May, then a hand scrub with a bristle deck brush and a deck cleaner solution (not a stripper), then rinse well and let it dry for several days, depending on the weather, then apply a very light coat of the TWP 101 with a pad applicator. However, I see the 100 series can no longer be imported into Canada. What product should I use now over the TWP 101? I really don’t want to have to do a complete stripping of the current surface.
The picture was taken today, before the annual cleaning. Considering the deck is over 30 years old, I think it has survived very well. It looks looks like new after the annual maintenance.
The TWP 100 Series has not been allowed in Canada for about 10 years now. The 200 Series can be used in Canada. You have no choice but to strip and brighten as you have an excessive build-up of the TWP on your deck now. It is supposed to fully soak into the wood, not dry on top of the wood as your pictures are showing. To remove, use the RAD Stripper and Brightener kit with both additives:
https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives
Thanks for the information. I read on another TWP distributor’s site that the 200 series is very slow to dry. Is this true?
It can take 1-2 weeks to fully cure. Once cured, it is an excellent stain and as good as the 100 Series.
It’s hard to tell from the computer pictures, but the TWP 201 Cedar tone looks darker than the TWP 101 Cedar tone. If there is a significant difference, which colour in the 200 series would be closest to the 101 Cedar Tone? Would the 203 Cedar Gold or 205 California Cedar be a closer match? Thanks for the help.
All the 200 Series colors start very dark when applied. After full cure in 1-2 weeks, they settle to the final color. It will be similar to the 101. Other best option would the Cedar Gold color.
I have a deck that is 8 months old now. Just bought the gemni kit to clean and restore. Deck has a fair amount of red mud stains from construction. Will these products clean this off or is sanding necessary? I also purchased dark oak stain to apply that I hope will mask it.
It should come off. Use a pressure washer while using the Gemini Kit.
I just stripped 10 year old pt deck of behr. I used power washer and paint eater disc’s on my angle grinder.
Using twp 102 redwood Should I do wet on wet method or just one coat then adding another coat six months later?
One coat now and another in 6-12 months or as needed.
I have a new PT pine deck in Georgia and a new fence. ( I own a medium size fence company and we stain fences ). We have been using Sherwin Williams stain products but not overly happy with product. What is the best product I can possibly use in Georgia from you guys?
For GA, us the TWP 100 Series. See this for new wood tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Hello
I am trying to stain an equipment trailer in coastal nc which product would work best
TWP 100 Series.
Please advise if this gallon ( can cover is in black we wish to use, as listed below,
is it from the 1500 series, or the 100 series,
or from the newer Semi-solid Pro series which is still a type 100?
Gallon label only reads: “115 Pro Series Honeytone”
Used this 2 years a go and it looks good today and performs great!
115 means 100 Series in Honeytone.
I want to strip 4 year old semi solid stain from my deck. My concern is that my deck is built around a large (5.5 ft. diameter) live oak tree and that applying the stripping products might be absorbed by the trees roots and poison my tree. I see information on protecting shrubs and plant leaves with watering, but nothing on absorption by trees. The deck is in good shape, over 15 years old, and about 480 square feet.
It is not going to harm the trees but you may not be able to strip the semi-solid. What brand is it, and post some pics in the comments.
Older wood deck. Freshly power washed in Southern Missouri. Trying to decide on semi vs opaque. 20×30 with 15ft benches built in and 15ft ramp 3ft wide.
Sun shade mix. Heavy black oak trees all around.
What product is best to use? Would like to see some grain but want to maximize protection.
The TWP semi-solids give max UV protection: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-pro-series
where can you purchase TWP products near O’Fallon, Mo.
We sell online only as TWP dealer.
I have 10 rustic pine beams that are at least 25 years old on a house I’m buying that I’d like to protect with TWP if possible. They do look like they have been stained and maybe have poly on them. I am having to replace two of them due to rot, so two of them will be untreated pine. What would you recommend?
You can only use the TWP if you remove the poly and that would require power sanding. Once fully removed, use the TWP 1500 series.
Help, we ran out of stain with 3 boards to go at 10 pm and no one was open. It’s still damp to the touch and hasn’t been 12 hours can I try a second coat? However i took a diamond tip brush to strip it then sanded it with a floor sander at 60 grit to prep. What should I do?
Looks good. Leave as is. Lightly recoat if desired in spring.
How long after staining deck can you put furniture back on the deck
When fully cured/dry. Typically a day or two.
2 coats?
Yes unless new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
How long should the stain be on before it rains? 24 hours?
8-24 hours.
Contractor used TWP 100 Dark Oak. 1 year old pressure treated deck wood (Garden Variety from Lowes). Sanded due to poor application. I’ve now got light areas that seem to coincide with heavier sanding (60 grit flap discs were used). Looking for any help to correct this. Thanks.
Remove all and start over.

Hello, cedar deck that needs to be stripped and refinished. We live on the north coast of Oregon. Weather wise we get it all: rain, sun, wind, sometimes snow, etc. Which line of product would you recommend? Thanks!
Please upload some pics for prep help.
Two summers ago we used Cabots Timber Oil. I hate, hate, hate both the product and the color! And it is flaking off now and looks horrible. Never again! So we plan to use the Restore a Deck stripper & brightener and sand with 60 grit if needed (it always fUris when we strip it). Then I want to go brown and stay away from the amber colors and from trying to have clear cedar because in our climate it doesn’t hold up so we as might as well go darker which will camouflage some discoloration and stains. I ordered sample cans of the 1503 dark oak and 1504 black walnut. I liked the description of the dark oak being for those who want to get away from the orange cedar tones.
Use the stripper additives as well. The 1500 Series will work well for this.
Do you think the 1503 dark oak will look nice on cedar? I’m hoping for a medium brown, not too dark but also brown enough to veer away from stains with amber/red hues. Thank you very much for your assistance. Our cedar deck is tremendously frustrating.
Sure, it is used on cedar all the time.

I would like to use the same project for a new deck and new board and batten siding. I will follow the weathering procedure for the decks but does board and batten need to be weathered also?
If smooth wood, then yes.
Hello! So I applied 100 series cedartone to my rough cut cedar fence 4 years ago and would like to re-apply. Do I need to do something else first?
Use this for prep while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Thanks. Should I pressure wash and then apply those things? Also, I’m keeping the same color and product, still gotta do all this prep work?
You apply and then pressure wash off. Yes, you have to prep when recoating.
I have a 4 year old deck that we are going to strip and re-stain. We are in Virginia. Which stain should I use?
TWP 1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
I used the same product 4 years ago. Do I need to do anything other than clean the deck before I stain it again?
Prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Ok…cleaned with 2 step Gemini. Put a 1st coat of stain on Saturday. I did not have enough material to put a second coat on and the store was closed. Can I put a second coat on Monday?
Second coats when applied need to be applied wet on wet. Applying a couple of days later could lead to over-application that results in shiny or sticky spots.
Replacing deck and rails and have cleaned and power washed frame and step stringers which are solid. Would like to put semi transparent stain/protector on it to help protect and make it look a bit newer and more even looking. Considering correct product and best color to look best with new wood once it cures in the sun for a while. Can you help?
East side of house with no shade.

We have a 36 year old covered redwood deck attached two a 8-10 year old sun exposed redwood deck. Which product do you recommend. We are in northern CA.
TWP 1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
I have a 5 year old deck that needs to be revealed. 3 years ago we used twp 101 cedartone. Now I see 100 series and 1500 series. Which one is the better product to use and lasts longest? Thank you
They last the same. Use the same as prior.
What is the difference between two 100 and two 1500 and two 200?
VOC contact and certain regulations for states between the wood and 1500. Really depends on where you live as to which to use.
I stained a large new deck here in NC mountains with TWP 100. Came out great. There is a section that is shaded that has mildewed on the horizontal surfaces. What should I use to clean it? Thanks
Try a product called “Wet and Forget”.
12-15 yr old deck on house in Va, stripping, cleaning and brightening got that. This deck gets minimal to average sunlight, I would say could be more likely to mold then to have excessive UV issue. Semi solid or 100 series.
Where in VA? Certain areas do not allow the semi-solid or 100 Series.
New wood—-12 months old….never stained…..live in Michigan14x12 deck plus stairsWhat to use twp 100 or 1500 and how to prep?

TWP 103 Dark Oak on older treated pine deck, previously stained with this product 5 years ago, now second time, finish is glossy in spots.(Do not care for the gloss) I did clean deck with Oxiclean/ vinegar and TSP and corrected PH with Oxalic acid, rinsed well and dried for 48 hours before application. How to deal with the gloss and eradicate?
Prep was incorrect and/or the stain was over applied, resulting in shiny spots. See here for tips: https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-is-spotty-or-shiny/
Update on my original post. In retrospect, I can tell you that the prep was done just fine. I haved been building and staining decks for over 30 years, does not make me an expert, far from that, but I have used various stains, oil and waterbased. TWP is by far the best that I have used. My problem with this section of deck, was that it was in full sun in South Texas and I was trying to get the work done before it got too hot. The ambient temp for that day was 93 and the stain was drying before we could wipe up the excess, so too much stain did go down. It was applied with rollers and brushes, necessary to fill in the cracks in the pressure treated pine wood, as the deck has taking a beating from the sun for over five years since the first staining. What I have now found out, two weeks after the job was finished, is that with time, the stains gloss is slowly going away due to the blazing sun and the deck is looking better every day. Sometimes, waiting, and letting Mother Nature do her thing, can be the best solution.
Just an FYI, TWP is a fully penetrating stain. It is not designed to fill in cracks or dry on top of the wood, but in the wood fully.
Glad it is looking better!
New built treated lumber deck in Missouri, with lots of afternoon sun. TWP 100 series or the 1500 series?
Use the 100 Series after wait and prep. See here: https://twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Is there a finish coat for after staining?
No, and you cannot ever topcoat TWP with a sealer or coating, it would peel.
You need to clean with the Gemini Restore Kit for prep when reapplying.
