Have stripped and brightened deck and top of handrail last fall but spindles are still in good condition with previous stain. Considering keeping the stain on the spindles and just re-staining the rest. Suggestions?

Susan, after the sanding you should prep the wood with the Gemini Restore Kit then apply 1-2 coats of the TWP.
Our 250-sq-ft cedar deck has been covered with Sikkens DEK, re-coated three times. We intend to power sand the upper surface off down to bare wood and start over. Any suggestions?
Chris Gifford, you cannot use TWP on a composite deck. Yes you should remove all of the old stain first. Stripping should work. TWP can be recoated as long as you do the maintenance coat before the product goes to failure.
I have 2 Customers looking for a protectant that can be renewed without having to completely strip each year. One has a composite deck made of iron wood. Is this product good for composite decks? Customer#2 has a fir deck that has been treated with water based stain, it is weathered and very dry but has a few patches of stain left. Should all the stain be removed completely. Should the fir have a light sanding before applying? Same question can will the deck accept a recoat without having to completely strip it first? Both homes are at high elevation with snow in the winter and one is in deep shade the other by a river.
Jo, TWP is not compliant for Canada and cannot be used or sold there.
I have a screened-in deck – built 13 years ago. Pressure treated wood (red type not the green).
Deck surface has been restained with Behr product-some flaking with this product.
Rest of deck never been restained – where protected by eaves, practically new looking – where in sun moderate to severe weathering.

Ryan, It is extremely diffcult to remove a newly applied acrylic stain. Best to ask Olympic for advice. For the old oil based Olympic, you can use the Restore A Deck Stain Stripper followed by the brightener. Read this about staining new decks:

New pressure treated deck. Built 2 months ago, builder says its time to stain.. Which TWP product id best for this? We are in GA.
I built a new cedar deck that I stained with Olympic Maximum cedar naturaltone yesterday. I have used the oil based product for years and loved it but the new water base formula was awful! I hate the color and the way it went on. I want to remove it and stain it with a TWP product. Hiw do I remove this stain I just applied and what stain should I use? I also have a cedar deck about 8 years old that hasnt been stained in about 3 years and is pretty weathered. It was stained with the Olympic Maximum oil based. I am in Texas. Thanks!

Wade, you must remove the Behr 100% before using TWP. It cannot be applied on top of it. What state are you in?
I have a 400 sq ft deck that is 10 years old. part is stained with solid bahr which is 70% gone with power washing and the rail is semi transperant behr that is very faided. the deck is treated lumber. It is on the west of the house and gets a lot of sun in the afternoon and evening. I used your stain on a job in Missouri for a family and loved it. I cant find a local distributor near here. Which of the two stains will work best in my application. Wood is in fair condition.

Laurie, strip and brighten the deck for the prep then stain with the 100 series.
ann, strip and brighten the wood with the RAD Stain Stripper and Brightener. Stain with the TWP 1511 California Redwood.

Have a 30 year old redwood deck (8×10) that has been stained every 2 or 3 years with Cabot natural deck stain. The deck was dark brown after all these years. Have used a deck stripper twice and now want to get back to a more natural look and preserve it and maintain a lighter redish color. What do you suggest to clean, brighten and preserve the deck?

Leon, if it is shiny then that means the stain did not penetrate completely. This is usually from over applying, improper prep, or combination of both. I would wipe the deck down with some lacquer thinner and some rags to remove the excess on top. Them let it dry for a few more days. Make sure to wet your rags with water when done to avoid accidental spontaneous combustion.
washed redwood deck & power washed, applied honey tone 1500, its still looks shiny, used your product 2 years ago and did not have this problem. its been 5 days, still looks like i used olive oil, is there a way to wash this down a bit, without starting all over?
You should not apply the 100 if it is going to rain 5 hours later. Too much of a risk. It may be fine but we cannot say for sure. Best to give it closer to 12 hours.
I have a cedar deck that I have sanded, cleaned and brightened all last week. I live in Mn and today is the first open window where we haven’t had some rain in two days. They are saying 30% chance of rain. How fast does TWP 100 dry? Can I still apply it this morning and if it rains 5 hours from now will the stain be okay? I have been waiting over a month to have enough open windows to get this done.
Dan D, you need to strip both the fence and the deck with the Restore A Deck Stain Stripper. Once all of the old coatings are removed you should apply the RAD brightener. Once fully prepped then you can use the TWP 100 Series.
Dan E, I would use the TWP 1500 for this to achieve maximum UV protection.

My deck is PT SYP and is 3 years old. Never been stained, wood is gray and gets half sun & half shade. Some mold near house. Wood is in pretty good shape. Which of your products do you recommend?

Jane, I would use the TWP 100 Series for this unless you are in a low VOC state. You would then need the 1500 Series.

Thanks. Since it is hard to get a good feel just from the little color sample on the website, is pecan basically a light brown when applied to cedar? I’m just trying to find the best way to cover the orange without it becoming too dark. Now that I know I can mix the colors, I guess I could just keep adding dark oak into the cedar until I get the result I like better.
That would not brown it enough. You would want to add a little Dark Oak into the Cedartone. You can clean and apply it on top next Spring.
I build a cedar deck last summer and stained it a couple weeks ago with the cedartone 100 series stain. The color is ok, but I wish it was a little less orange. I live in MN so I anticipate having to restain again next year anyway. Do you have any advice on what I can do to make it a little more brown instead of orange. Can I mix a gallon of cedar with pecan? If that is an option, can I just brush it over the top of what I already have or do you suggest stripping the old off first? Thanks.
Tim, I would use the 100 for MN. Make sure all of the Behr has been removed.

Hi,
I recently constructed a redwood deck using new materials, so the wood is about a month old, on average, and is in good condition. I’m wondering what your suggestion would be regarding the wait period before applying stain. Can i stain now, or should i use the deck all summer and stain in the fall? Also, i’m looking for maximum protection without too much color. Shopping around, i’ve been eye-balling transparent stains. Based on your available palette, would my best bet be to go with the cedar or the honey, or should i just stick with the redwood?

i have a brand new deck with treated decking and post, but with cedar hand rails with black blausters. Would you recommend rustic or cedartone in order to match up the treated decking with the cedar rails? How long to i need to want before staining the new deck?
Janice, Rustic is a red color with a hint of brown but definitely more on the red side. There is not a way to lighten the color.
