Prep with a cleaner and wood brightener with a light pressure washing. Lightly sand to remove any splinters. Stain with the TWP. It covers about 100-125 sq. feet for 2 coats per gallon.

We have a new deck, pressure treated fir that is still being installed. Which TWP product do you recommend, as we live in Washington state and have cold winters with snow, but not a lot of rain. Half of the deck is under a roof, and half is exposed to the elements. Thank you!
Opened is 6-12 months. If you reseal in a 100% closed container you can get maybe a year or two.
I have a 5 gallon bucket of TWP 100 that is half full. How long does the stain stay good in the can?
Robert Owens, new wood needs to weather for 4+ months, cleaned and brightened for the prep, and only 1 coat should be applied. You will not get the proper results if you put 2 coats on brand new wood.

Nancy, if you sand than it would be best to use the Gemini Restore Kit after for the prep. Only one coat if you sand smooth.
Hi, I live in WA state and my deck wood is two years old and the Sikkens that we applied two years ago is peeling off. The Sikkens did not penetrate the wood. If we sand the Sikkens off, how long do we have to wait to apply TWP 100?
Michelle Curry, make sure to remove the old stain first. Clean and brighten the entire deck when done. Use the 100 Series for NC.

More like 100 sq. feet for 2 coats. First coat goes on about 150-200 and the second is 200-300. Averages to about 100 sq. feet for two coats.

I’m considering this stain for my new boathouse and dock on fresh water lake in Florida. Wood is new dense or better grade of pressure treated and paraffin treated Southern Yellow Pine.
How long do I need to wait before this stain can be applied to new construction?

We have added on to an existing deck, so have both new and older wood to stain. Older section has been stained before–about 4-5 years old. In good condition, but stain is “flaking” up in sections of older deck. We live in Mountains of North Carolina–Blue Ridge/Appalachian. Lots of ice in winter, rain in summer, humid all the time. Hi, I’d like to restain my 10+ year old deck with TWP 100 in Dark Oak. I’m not sure why type of wood was used, but the desk surface has been power-washed to remove the old stain (Behr Weatherproof Stain) and dirt.
I see the description that one gallon covers 100-200 sq feet – but does that figure cover 1 coat or 2?
My deck measure 14 x 10 and I have 5 stairs up to the deck along with the railings that need to be stained.

Yes TWP 100 Series is compliant for all of VA but the northern/DC area.

Don, if rough cedar you can apply right away. Smooth and you need to wait and prep first.

I am staining my cedar rough shingle siding. It previously was sealed with thompsons oil based water seal ( which didnt last even a year) eastern exposure and I was wondering if I need to clean the rough cedar first and what would be best so I don’t damage the appearance ?
I have 2 yr old cedar deck that was finished with TWP 120. I would like to recoat to freshen it up. It’s in excellent condition. Can I use Deck Maintain (a Gemini product) to prep,or do I need to use something with sodium precarbonate in it, and a brigtener as your web site suggests?
gpgorman, you should not put TWP on top of other brands. It will not work at it’s maximum potential. Best to strip off the old stain so the wood is free of other coatings.
I stained the house 8 years ago with Olympic Oil Base Semi-Transparent Exterior Stain and I want to try your 102 stain. I tested a small section with your sample bottle and it penetrated really well and looks good. Do you see any reason it would not work?

Just finished staining my cedar deck and railings with the TWP 101. What should I expect next Spring? We live in Minnesota and the deck/stairs are shaded until about 10 am and then sun on the deck until it goes down at night.
Will I be needing to put a new coat on next Spring and if I do, will I need to prepare it again?
Jason, rough cedar can be stained right away. No need to wait. Just one coat though. We would need a total sq. footage to give an accurate idea.

Heinz, prep the wood lightly first with the Gemini Restore Kit. Stain with only 1 coat of the TWP for the first time.
I’m getting ready to build a pergola out of new rough western red cedar lumber and have heard that TWP is the best stain. I’d like to stain all of the lumber before assembly. However, I’ve read that the wood should weather for a few months first for smooth wood. Is this the case for rough cedar as well? Is the VOC the main difference between 100 and 1500? How much would I need to stain (16) 2x8x16′, (23) 1x4x16′, and (2) 2x8x10′ boards?

Hi, I have gotten myself into a big project. Our deck (approximately 8 years old) was sealed with a Flood product. My plan was to clean the deck this year, but the old sealant/stain looked horrible after cleaning. I have now stripped the deck and cleaned again. I am looking for the best product to seal my deck. I want to add little to no color. I also would like to use a product that I will not have to ever strip again. I’m willing to clean and reseal. The stripper has to go. Needless to say I am sick of spending my summer working on my deck and not enjoying it. Any advice on the best product? TWP keeps coming up on all the discussion boards and web searches. Thanks for any suggestions.

Jeff, TWP cannot be applied on top of a paint or solid stain.
Anne, touching up is hard to day as it may show the spot treatments. I would try it though as it would be much easier.
Hail storm here in Minnesota last Tuesday and I had just stained my spindles the previous Friday. I now have many pits in the stained wood. There are only a couple of spots that broke all the way through to bare wood. Do I need to re-sand and re-stain or can I just try to stain the little spots that broke through to the bare wood?
my deck is 15 years old, pressure treated, has a gray paint/stain on it. Deck is in good condition. Deck gets full sun, a lot of snow(northern Wisconsin). I want whatever is the best and has color options(i.e. Gray) thanks.

we have just received rough sawn cedar boards for a vertical board and batten siding we would like to use TWP stain
can we apply it before putting on the house or is it necessary for the wood to weather first?
Dale, you can use either series but it does depend on your state if the 100 is legal. Any high quality caulk is okay.
I am unsure what stain to use on our log home 100 or 1500 series. Also what caulk is best to use with your stain. I was told that you have to use an oil base caulk and was recommended Titebond. What is your opinion?
tim m, best to strip off the Olympic first and brighten before using the TWP. This way it will properly adhere and perform like it should.
