I’ve been slowly building a treehouse constructed entirely of pressure-treated pine (deck, framing, siding, railing) and western red cedar roof shingles. It has all aged at a different rate since it has taken so long to construct, but the oldest wood has been exposed to the weather for about 4 months now while the newest wood is still wet from the store. None of it has been stained yet. I can see the decking (which has been up the longest) has faded quite a bit and will probably be gray in a couple months, while the newest wood is quite “yellow”. I’d like to wait until Spring and let the wood age a little more before I stain it.
My questions are these:
1. Is the pressure-treatment enough to protect the wood for the next 5-6 months through the winter in TN?
2. Is it better to let the cedar shingles age and turn gray before staining them? I’m debating whether to stain them before I install them (easier to get to).
Lynn, you could try a very light re coat. If that does not work then you need to strip off the stain and start over.
I have put stain on deck and before it could dry it rained and I now have white milkey spots on deck they are water spots how do I now correct problem
Ken B, I would use the 150 for this after prepping with the Restore A Deck Stain Stripper and Brightener.
Live in North Dakota, have cedar deck and fence. Deck 5yrs old and fence 3 years old. Used Penofin Blue Label 2 yrs ago. Wondering if I should use the 100 or the 1500. Any advice?

new 600sf ipe horizontal deck, installed 1 month ago in
Texas. small area (50sf) that receives most sun starting to show greying. do i need to wait any longer b4 staining? I’m okay with the color as it is. Do you recommend restore a deck on a new application?

That is just mineral deposits from the rain water. Just wipe off with a wet rag.
I stained my deck with the twp 101 in August and I notice that when it rains there are areas that will have a few dried water spots. Is this normal? I have not tried to rub or scrub the area to see if they come off.
Heidi, strip off the old coatings and use the TWP. The Restore A Deck Stripper should work with a pressure washing. Brighten the wood when done with the stripper.
John L, it means only one coat this year. No second coat. Best to do one now and a light maintenance coat to the horizontals next year.
First application on 11 month old pressure treated lumber deck. It reads on help page to only apply one coat for the decks initial application . Does this mean to not apply the second wet coating after 4 hours? Or is one wet on wet considered one coating?

Phil, if you close the lid so there is zero evaporation then it should be okay.

Reg, we can ship the 100 to all areas of VA except the counties surrounding DC. You cannot apply TWP on the Behr. The Behr must be removed. Coverage is about 150-200 sq. feet per gallon for 1 coat and 100-125 for 2 coats of the stain. Most do the two coats wet on wet.

I ordered two five gallons pails of TWP 100 stain, but it only took five gallons for my deck, so now I have an extra five gallons. I am looking at redoing the horizontal surfaces in two years. Will the unopened can of stain still be good to use? Thanks.
Jay, no you must remove the Olympic so the TWP can properly work. I would strip it off.
I have cleaned a 1 year old deck that was stained with Olympic Stain Ans Sealer, in a semi-transparent cedar. It mildewed very bad so I am looking for something new. Looking at TWP-100 in cedar. Can I apply it over the Olympic? I cleaned and pressure washed, but I did not strip it.

Glossy areas are signs of over application or improper prep. Basically the stain did not absorb correctly and dried on top of the surface instead of “in” the wood grain. Cannot fix without removal and starting over.
The brightener will lighten a little. Coverage is about 150-200 sq. feet per gallon.
We applied the first coat of TWP1500 stain to a pier and open Boathouse that is located on Lake Jacksonville, TX. After it dried we have some very glossy areas where it appears the stain is not dry but it actually is dry. Can you advise why the glossy areas & how we can correct?
I have a house with redwood siding that had solid stain on that I stripped off with a power washer. Will go back with redwood tone or cedar tone (I want redwood) 100. The siding is clean but more brown than the reddish color I expected. Do I need to use a brightener and will it bring out more natural color? What do you suggest? Jan, you can wipe the excess stain with a rag and mineral spirits to speed up the drying.
I applied the 100 stain on previously stained wood after prepping it as you described. It went on and dried beautifully except for a couple of spots here and there. They are still tacky to the touch and a bit shiny. How long will it take to dry completely? And if it doesn’t what can I do to remove the stickiness? thanks for your help.
Ryan12, for 2 coats of the TWP 100 you would need 4-5 gallons. Make sure you clean and brighten the wood first with the Gemini Restore Kit.
I am about to stain my deck for the first time. It’s been stained before but by the previous homeowners, so I don’t know what they used or when it was stained. It’s fairly grayed and in need of a stain. The deck is about 530 sq. ft. How much stain will I need?

hello I have a deck apx 15 years old. Went a few years past when it should have been refinished. Power washed it though and it looks good. I will need to sand though a bit. my question is how will i know for sure if two coats will be required ?

NewDeckOwner, use the Gemini Restore Kit witht he pressure washing. Let wood dry 48 hours after prepping or heavy rain. Make sure the TWP penetrates into the wood and does not dry on top of the wood.
Our deck was installed in April 2012. It began to curl, warp and shrink by August 2012. Our carpenter told us that this meant it was time to seal/stain it. Unfortunately, we did not have enough good weather to finish the entire deck before wet and winter weather. However, the areas that we did seal last year are already peeling – the cedar benches and the treated steps. We live in Michigan and it gets full sun most of the day (faces east). We powerwashed it first, let it dry for a day and then applied two coats by brush, waiting about 15 – 30 min in between coats. Any advice to keep the stain from peeling now that we are preparin gto coat the rest of the deck? Also, how dry does the deck need to be after a rain/powerwash to begin staining (can we stain when it rained the prior night)?

Ralf, yes you should clean and brighten after the sanding. I would wait a month first. Clear will not prevent UV praying. Might want to read this:

I have just stripped and sanded an old redwood deck. Deck was about 20yrs od and was previously painted. Do i need to clean/brighten the deck after sanding again. After sanding, the deck has a beautiful red/pink colour to the wood, but this doesnt last too long once exposed. Can i stain the deck after sanding or do i need to wait and then clean the deck before staining. Also i want to preserve the redwood color as much as possible without darkening too much. What color stain would you recommend. i was originally planning to use a clear stain, but the twp only seems to come in a color range.
