Please add them in the comment area below.
Is this a oil base product?
Yes.
Can i put a water based stain over it after a few years old?
No, whenever you switch bases or even brands of stain with the same base, you will need to remove the prior coating first.
Stained our fence Pro Series Cedartone 101. Looking at the right side, lighter fence, is our neighbor’s fence, not stained – and what ours looked like after never treating since installation in 2008. Love the color, easy application.
Just used the two step cleaner and re sprayed my deck for second time in last 3 years. Still very pleased with TWP products.
I loved the deck color! Wich color you used in it? Thanks
Looks like 101 Cedartone on pressure treated pine wood.
How different is the UV protection between 120 Pecan and 101 Cedartone? Most of the deck is protected from the sun aside from a small portion that gets the afternoon sun.
Same UV protection.
Is there any type of ‘extra dense’ (like a paste) TWP product to treat the ends of planks? End-grain absorbs much more quickly than face grain…or should I just apply extra product?
Sorry but no, that is no such thing.
I ran out of twp 1501, can I use twp 101 on the rest of the panels without too much difference in color?
No, it will not match.
Deck worked out great with cedar tone 1501. Unfortunately loss of cottonwood
seed falling shortly after which is somewhat adherent to the newly stained surface. How soon can I wash the deck down with dish soap or something else?
24-48 hours.
Can you put mineral spirits with cedar tone
You should not thin the TWP.
How long is the 100 formula expiration date. How long will a can still be good for later touchups down the road?
https://twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
My state(Michigan) recently just banned the 100 formula, which is a shame. I have used this product for years and loved it. What do I need to do in a few years when it comes time to restain? I sure hope I don’t have to sand/remove the old. What type of formulas/products can be placed over TWP 100 when that time comes? I understand this is a twp forum, but I would like to understand too what other products may work.
Thanks,
Shane
Best to strip and brighten and then use the TWP 1500 Series:
https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-1500-series
Strip how? Chemically or sand? Later if we wanted to put a solid over it years down the road would it stick? This being banned has put me in a tough spot with 3 different decks I used it on.
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
The TWP 1500 is an excellent stain so no need for a solid stain down the road.
Hello – you are most patient and consistent with your answers..I have posted a couple things about our deck – now determining color – while 103 dk oak was recommended we do love the cedar color contrast with house paint. This vertical is a transparent PPG cedar tone oil- on cedar – love it but not for the deck. We prefer TWP – I have samples of Supercedar Semi Solid and 103 dark 0ak en route. While you’ve mentioned that you can’t overcoat 100 Pro series with Semi Solid Pro series- can you mix them for color preference? If not would 103 dark oak and 101 cedar tone make a darker cedar color?
And yes this deck is not yet ready – needs further stripping and brightening…:)
Thank you so much for your attention and guidance.
You cannot mix the semi-solids with the 100 Series but you can mix colors of the same series together. Adding Dark Oak to Cedartone would brown out the cedar color but how much varies on your wood type, age, etc.
Thanks for that info. I do recall you mentioned in a post that 1501 cedartone was a darker color cedar than 101 – does that sound right ?
Yes, that is correct.
Thank you.
Making sure I understand the difference between the 100 series and 1500 series –
100 series:
-higher VOC and not compliant in all states due to VOC
-dries quicker
-more effective wood protection overall – UV, water repellent due to VOC
-cedar color slightly lighter
-lasts longer before recoating necessary?
-best overall rating for penetrating oil options
And final questions re colour:
– will second coat (101 cedar tone) make it darker
– and will years of TWP recoating using same color appear darker over time.
100 and 1500 series will last the same. The rest is correct.
The second coat will give more color. When recoating you have to prep so no, it does not get darker over time.
Terrific thank you
We purchased TWP 101 Cedartone to use after stripping a log home. Is there a clear coat we can use after the stain has dried to protect the integrity?
No, you cannot apply a coating over the top of the TWP stains.
Have a new home (1.5 yr old) that has cedar, rough cut, vertical planks and posts used around the home. I was planning on power washing with water, then TWP101 after it dries. Should I add a step of a cleaner/brightener/wash to my current plan?
Yes.
Is there a difference between TWP100 Cedartone and TWP101 Cedartone?
There is no such thing as TWP “100” Cedartone. 101 is the number for the Cedartone color. 100 is the number for clear.
I have a wood bench we built a few years ago and am looking to stain it. Do I need to do anything prior to apply 101 stain?
Make sure the wood is prepped. Clean and brightened.
Sorry but a two part question:
First, what is the difference between the cedar tone and the honey tone? Looking through the presented pictures they look really similar. The best I can tell on my iPad screen is the honey tone is a bit more gold while the cedar tone is a bit more orange. What is your professional opinion on the difference between the two colors?
Second, which of the two has more pigment to protect from UV?
Thank you for the reply
Honeytone is lighter (more gold) in color than cedartone (More caramel). Same UV protection.
Thank you. Last question, between the 100 & 1500 series, which product line will give the best results for my climate? Cedar fence and cedar deck, Southern Washington coast, rain, sun, etc
They will last the same on a deck.
I love the 101 Cedartone!
Any recommendations on the best brush to use to apply?

Does anyone have a picture of TWP 103 Dark Oak on Cedar wood posts?
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-103-dark-oak
Is the finish shiny or flat?
No shine.
10 year old deck after prep and after 5th restain with TWP Cedartone. Good product.
Looks great!
live in wisconsin. have a new pressure treated deck . Would i use twp 100 or 1500?
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 100 Series after wait and prep.
I live in Northern Arkansas, will be a 1st time user of TWF on a deck a contractor installed wrapped around 2 sections of the home, and has been sitting for the second year. I know i need a light power washing. I like the Cedartone Natural, does the oil base give a better shine and last longer than water base ?
TWP does not have a shine as they are penetrating stains. We only sell oil-based.
I was a dealer for them and there isn’t a shine to it. It penetrates the wood. I have done decks and houses that have not needed recoated after 7 years.
I used 101 cedar on my new cedar deck 10 months ago. I want to put another coat on before the winter. Do I need to do anything more than a good power wash before I recoat with the same stain? The deck has held its color pretty well, but no longer beads up in rain.
Whenever you recoat you will need to use the Gemini Restore Kit.
I used the kit last weekend, and the deck is ready to stain. I’m hoping to stain this weekend. We’ve had no rain for several days. However, we are having very heavy morning dew, and the deck is not dry until mid-afternoon. Do I need to wait until the dew lightens? we are getting temperature extremes here from night to day — high 50’s at night and then mid 80’s during the day.
You can stain in afternoon after dew dries off.
I just completed staining my 33-year-old pressure-treated 2×4 pine decking. I live in SE MN. First stripped the deck using Restore-A-Deck with both additives, since the deck had one coat of Sherwin Williams Deckscapes Semi-Transparent Stain 17 years ago. Used TWP Series 100 101 Cedartone. See the before and after pictures. Just loved the stain color and how the deck turned out. A lot of work, especially for a guy who’s 80.
This is my front porch. Can I apply one layer of TWP 101 Cedartone over existing stain or I have to remove old stain before staining TWP 101 Cedartone? It does not matter what color the porch will be after the work is done, but I do not know whether TWP 101 Cedartone can stick well on existing stain? Thanks!
You have to remove the current stain first.
⚠️ Lengthy post warning!!
I live in Oregon. In 2018 I re-stained my deck. Previous owners had applied several layers of solid stain or possibly paint on the deck flooring that I sanded off. I then used Restore-a-deck cleaner and brightener before staining. I used Ready-Seal brand semi-transparent stain in a pecan color. I’m getting ready to restain this year but have some questions. I’d like to use the TWP 100 pro series deck stain. (1) Do I need to strip or sand my deck before applying a different brand of stain? (2) Would this stain hold up in a heavy rain climate like Oregon? I have pets that love sun bathing on the bare deck, (3) will the oils rub off onto my pets? The Ready Seal stain I used last left behind a oil residue that rubbed off on my dogs coats and our clothes. It held a strong odor of chemical and oil for months after. It also made the deck slippery when wet. (4) Is this all normal stuff? (5) How do I prevent the deck from becoming slippery in the damper seasons? It was my first time refinishing a deck, so perhaps I made some rookie mistakes that I’d like to not repeat this time around. I don’t want to cover up the wood grain or drown it out with a dark stain. I’m looking to accentuate it’s beauty with adding a splash of color for protection, so I was thinking of going with the TWP 101 cedartone or honeytone stain. The railing posts were stained but never the railings themselves. The railings have never been stained, sanded, cleaned, brightened, etc. My husband was going to change the railings but never got around to doing so. The railings were just added back on this year after being stored under the house. They were taken off prior to sanding and staining the deck last.
Much thanks,
Kat
1. Yes.2. Yes, it will.3. No, TWP fully cures while RS does not.4. Not normal, RS has issues with this.5. No need. TWP is not slippery.
I have a deck/railings that has been stained use a solid color paint stain. Do you have a product that I can use to go over this? I would like to match Cedar 101
Sorry but no, we do not sell solid stains so you cannot use the TWP products.
Can I apply TWP 101 to a brand new bamboo fence?
Sorry but no, it will not work on bamboo.
Our deck gets the direct setting sun. Our restoration company indicated that they apply two coats “wet on wet” to the horizontal boards – but my husband feels like the deck faded after only one year. He would prefer to have the deck restored every 3 years if possible. When he asked them to apply a second coat – after the first application dries, the company said that wasn’t necessary. What is your opinion and recommendation??
More is not better. Only apply as much stain as the wood allows to fully soak in.
Is the 1501 series the same product as the 101 series
No.
Hi! my painter recommended the 100 series stain for our soffit and cover over our outside covered deck. We are installing a high grade clear cedar 1 x 4 T & G material so want to be sure to do the correct color the first time around. We are going to coat the lumber in a dry location prior to installation. I do not want to obscure the natural grain of the wood with a stain that will detract from the cedar. My question is should I be using a stain or a clear protectant? of all of the colors which will look the most natural without giving it a sheen or artificial look? I understand the goal sometimes of trying to make wood look better than it might be but we are starting with very expensive cedar and I don’t want to sacrifice that. Thank you
You cannot prestain unless the wood is rough sawn: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
You must have a stain if you want to prevent UV graying. Clear will gray naturally in months.
Question regarding pre stain. We want to stain while on the flat as opposed to having to stain overhead in an open area. This is mild dried v joint cedar and would be a lot easier to do on the ground
Only can be done if the wood is rough sawn otherwise you need to weather and prep as explained in the article link we sent.
I’ve been told that new wood (pressure treated pine) may only need one coat of the TWP series stains? Is this true? My new wood deck (5 months old) is ready and am unsure what to do? One coat vs 2?
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Just one coat.
Hello – I have a 8 month old boat dock and walk way that totals ~1,200 sq ft and made of marine grade lumber. Half of it the dock gets constant sun and the other half is covered. Our goal (like most others) is to maintain the look of the wood finish as long as possible. After reviewing the products we believe the TWP 101 Cedartone will meet our needs and is the color we would like. While the calculator takes into consideration things we don’t have (hand rails, etc.) it stated we need 12 gals along with 2 kits of the cleaner / brightner. Would you be kind enough to confirm our assumptions, the amount of product we need and if there is anything we might of mist your guidance is greatly appreciated. Take care . . .
Only one coat for new wood so you would need about 7-8 gallons and 2 of the prep kits.
I wonder how log does TWP 100 series can stay in can after I opened it. I plan to purchase 5 gallons, and there will be left over. I plan to use leftover in following years. Also, can I apply it after a year or so when it starts losing its effect without stripping the old one.
See here: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
Clean for prep when recoating.
What are your different shades of cedar tone stain ?
Thank You
There is only one color/shade for the TWP 101 Cedartone. We replied to you last week about this as well.
What are the different shades of your cedar’d tone 101 stains
The is only one color/shade for the TWP 101 Cedartone.
Can you put 100 series on top of other different brand of stain if it is of similar color?
No, you must remove the previous coating first.
I have all rough sawn cedar porches. The wood has cured for several months now. I have areas that are greying due to direct sun exposure. I would like to restore the grey areas back to their natural finish then coat all the cedar with a low lustre product. I didn’t want to alter the natural color but everything I read says that a clear coat will not protect as well from greying. Your cedartone 101 looks really yellow/orange in a lot of the reviews. I prefer the red and browns that are in my wood right now. I do like how the grain and knots appear darker after they are wet from rain. What’s my best option to maintain the current color without having to recoat every year. I have lots of exposed wood. I’ve tried a semitransparent on a scrap piece and my wood is so rough that it was blotchy because of the fir on my cedar. Please advise! Thank you!
Honeytone 115 is the closest color to a “wet” look. Look at that.
Thank you. The honeytone looks really yellow and orange which I don’t want…do you offer small samples?
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Thank you. I ordered a couple of samples. I’m now wondering if after doing more research if the 1500 series is better for my situation? What’s the major difference in the 100 and 1500?
1500 is not better. The difference is VOC laws based on your state. They both work about the same for what you have.
I used the Cedartone 101 and if you like the darker wet look of knots in the wood knots really stand out after staining. I suppose there’s a difference in the way the stain is absorbed in the knots.
Which stain did you go with?
I recently purchased a 5G drum of TWP CDRTONE 101. It appears I may not quite have enough to finish my project. Another gallon will likely suffice. Is this available in a 1G size?. If available please send info as to availability in my area or price and shipping options. Thanks so much. I live in the 63366 zip code

What is the difference between semi transparent TWP 101 Cedartone and transparent TWP 1501 Cedartone!?
https://www.twpstain.com/difference-between-twp-100-and-1500-series
The 1501 is also darker.
I have a full sun deck all day….so the 1501 claims to have BETTER UV protection than the 100 series! So, in your opinion, should buying the 1501 give me longer lasting.guard against the full.sun….thus lasting longer?
Also…how much darker cedadrtone is the 1501….slight….or very noticeable?
Slightly better UV for the 1501. Not years longer just holds color a little longer before fading. You still will need to be redo every 2-3 years no matter what series. You can see pictures of the 1501 on our photo pages: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1501-cedartone#!twp_1501_cedar_tone
How soon is cedartone rain fast
Typically around 12 hours.
Do I need to take off the old stain with something such as a strong power wash setting before reapplying a new coat? Also do I need to have anything applied over the stain or will the stain protect the wood as well?
If you have a different brand of stain on the wood, that will need to come off first. TWP does not need to be top coated.
According to prior owner this is the same brand and color last used 3 years ago, should be fine to go over the deck without taking off old stain, just may need a few coats for similar look in the heavily weathered sections… that sound accurate?
what is the shelf life of left over stain?
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
Have used your 101 on my cedar house for 25 years. Re coat approximately every 4 years.Love it. I have about 2 gallons left over in a bucket and am trying mix it, but is the consistency of cottage cheese. About 3 years old, never had this problem before. Is this a new formula or what?
Not a new or differen formula but it has gone bad. Opened pail shelf life is 12 months or less. https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
Where can I purchase twp101 in Ontario?
what is used for clean up of brushes ?
The TWP 100 is not legal for Canada VOC laws. You can use the TWP 200 Series and we can ship it to you in Ontario: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
Twp 101 deck on Port Orford Cedar. Single coat after weathering 3 months. Had to Lightly sand with 60 grit after using cleaner, then repeated cleaner, followed by brightener. Was planning on wet on wet application but just did one coat and then wiped with rag since the stain didn’t appear to be absorbing completely.
Did you read our tips about waiting 4-12 months? https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Leave as is and do another light coat in the Spring.
I was given your link by AMTECO. I want to try a small sample of your Cedartone 101 before I choose the final material I will use to refinish a large cedar deck. Please tell me how to proceed for this, and thanks. Steve Temple.

Cedartine 101 on a 13year old fence! Looks like new
