Either Series would work well. You would only need 1-2 gallons.
I am installing a new redwood deck in my backyard. What would be the best product to use for this installation?
It is in a fairly sunny area. It’s area is about 10′ x 15′ on the ground floor (about 14″ off the ground).

You would ant the use the Gemini Restore Kit to prep with the pressure washer. One coat on verticals and 2 coats on horizontals is normal. We like stain pads the best. Here are some articles that will help: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/tips/application-instructions/
I have a boat house in Orlando, FL on a lake that we are going to re-stain. the boat house is around 12 years old. it is made of some hardwood. it is in good shape. i seem to have to re-stain it every 2-3 years and have done so. question: i am going to be changing the stain color this time around. thinking of going with you twp 1500 cedartone. question: anything we need to do since we are changing stain color? is it sufficient to just pressure wash the boathouse and then apply the stain? thanks
1. Installed 3-5 years ago, not sure age of wood, but also doing new wood this summer to match.
2. Cedar shakes – siding
3. Great to some bad mildew depending on location
4. Olympic (says oil penetration water clean up on can)
5. Re-siding the other 2 sides of house this summer. Want to change to using the 1500 on new shakes and redo the old shakes with same product. How do you suggest tackling the mold and reapplying with new product? For new shakes, can they be dipped? 1 or 2 coats?
Used your product on our deck last year – love it!
Thanks
Beth
I’m considering purchasing your 1500 product to apply to my 1 year old deck. I plan to pressure wash the deck prior to application. What is the best method to apply your product? Roller, brush, stain mop, all the above? Should I apply 2 coats to the decking and 1 to the railing? I would appreciate your help.
Tim,

For new wood you should let the wood weather. Please read this for more info:

Hi, I’m building a new deck and would like to try various shades to see which one will work best.
– Pressure treated pine, 2×6 No1 select
– new construction
* Main deck in natural/slightly darker shade, we’d like to have a ‘wet’ look of natural wood. Same for railing top.
* For rail posts and all support pieces, we would like darker semi-transparent look to go with our aluminum balusters which are finished in rustic brown color.
Mike01, make sure to remove any old stain first. I would use the TWP in one of the richer colors. Clears will gray fast while darker or richer colors will prevent graying faster.
Age of wood=16 years
Type of wood=white cedar
Condition= very good
Stained previously with floods clear wood finish and later sherwin williams deckscapes
It is siding that is always in the sun. Even the floods held up on the other parts of the house, but in this area nothing seems to work.
Cheryl, Please read this about TWP and new decks:

For for colors, the lighter the color, the quicker it will fade from UV.
sorry, part of my eamil was deleted. We are putting up a new cedar arbor. When the wood was delivered, it was slightly wet. How long should be let it dry before staining? And what other preparation should be done? We want UV protection to prevent graying, but would prefer a fairly tranparent look. Suggestions?
? And what other preparation should be done? We want UV protection, but would rather have a more transparent look. Suggestions?
Dave,
I am sorry but TWP 100 and 1500 Series cannot be shipped or sold into Canada. It is not compliant there.
Hi:
I have a 10 yr old cedar deck. Located in Toronto, Canada. South facing and in full sun all day. Originally finished with Cabot Tung Oil and redone every two to 3 years. Last year cleaned with Cedar Wash deck cleaner and treated with Thompson’s sealer.
The cleaner has bleached the deck and the sealer hasn’t sealed so well. I would like to refinish and stain.
Appreciate your recommendations
Dave
Jade, either would work well for you. TWP 100 is a little thinner so it may be able to penetrate your newer wood a little better. The 1500 can give slightly better UV protection since it contains a more solids.
Hi. I live in Texas. I did read the article, and will comply. That was a helpful article! I’m still wondering tho about the 100 or 1500 TWP…which one would be appropriate?
jade
Jade,
What state do you live in? Please read this article on staining new wood with TWP:

Hi. I’ve been following closely for a while. But I just want to make sure I’m on the right track before I buy.
1. Constructed in September, 2012
2. Yellow Treated Pine
3. New-ish
4. Never been stained
5. Deck, Handrails, Stairs. Alluminum Ballisters.
My question: 150 or 1500?
Thank you.
Jade
Dennis, make sure to remove any remnants of the old stain first so the TWP can properly penetrate int the cedar. This can typically be done with a stain stripper then neutralized with a wood brightener. Once the wood is prepped, you should apply two light coats of the TWP 1500 “wet on wet”. This will ensure a even coverage, proper penetration into the wood, and maximum protection. For info on “wet on wet” application, please read this on our TWP Help Site:
http://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
1. 10 years old
2. Heartwood Cedar 2X6 flooring
3. Excellent but wearing quicker in the perimeter areas not covered by the deck roof
4. Yes. Cabot or SW Deck scapes oil toner–cedar color
5. Entire floor and steps
Dickie, in general the darker or richer the color the longer it takes to fade from the UV. When applying too soon to new wood, stains will have a difficult time of penetrating causing premature color fading and wearing. Most likely you will just need to clean and re coat the wood in a year or so.
Peter, either series would work for you and they would not hurt the asphalt. Both are oil based. You should clean and brighten the wood with the Gemini Restore Kit to prep.
I applied the redwood TWP to a new cedar deck. I didn’t wait the 4-6 months. Is there a problem with that (besides not reading all the directions)? If so, what do I need to do to make it good?
Question: Does the darker stains hold up better under the ‘Texas’ sun and weather opposed to the clear. Your expertise and documentation will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, dle
I have a 700 sq. ft. cedar deck previously stained with Thompson Water Seal, but now almost completely weathered gray with minimal stain remaining. Is the TWP 100 or the 1500 most suitable for this application? In addition to pressure washing, what other preparation do you recommend? Thank you. Peter.
I have a pressure treated cedar decks weathered for several years. 1000 sq. ft. over patio and 1000 sq. ft. over blacktop (asphalt) roof. Is the TWP 100 or the 1500 most suitable for these decks? I presume the stains are oil based. Do I risk damaging the hot mop asphalt roofing by drips of the stain? Thank you. Peter
Ed, new wood is not ready to be stained. TWP suggests waiting 4-12 months to allow the wood to dry and weather slightly. After that you should use the Gemini Restore Kit to prep the wood for the stain.
I have a brand deck and a painter suggested twp stain cedar tone. Would like guidance on prepping and painting
John, actual colors vary considerably as it depends on the wood type, age, and prepping. Best to get a sample to test. You may also visit this link for some ideas: TWP 1500 Colors.
I would look at the TWP 1500 for this deck. Make sure to clean or remove any of the Wolman first.
Apply the first coat of stain then apply the second coat right away while the first coat is still wet.
Forgot to mention it is a 2 level deck approx 10X20 each level
Hello:
1. 15 years
2. Treated lumber
3. Okay but some graying/cracking
4. Professionally stained ~ 3 years ago with Wolmans F&P
5. Deck and fence
What is ‘wet on wet’? Also how close are the actual colors to those shown on the website?
Thanks,
John
That sounds like one old and dried out deck! I would use the 1500 Series and apply 2 coats. This will replenish the dried out wood. Make sure to prep with the Gemini Restore A Deck Kit first to remove the dirt and the graying.
Age of wood – 23 years
Type – red wood, 2×4’s & 2×6’s.
Not treated w/anything in 23 years.
Condition – dry, rough surface, gray.
2nd story deck, heavy sun/all weather exposure, air circulation all around.
New wood should not be stained right away, it should be installed, let weathered for 4-12 months, then cleaned and brightened to prep. No need or advantage to stain all sides of wood. Just need to stain the exposed sides. As for color, I would suggest getting some samples to test out. You can find the link to the samples on the right.
1) bought if from a lumber dealer in spring of 2012 – It has been in the garage out of the elements
2)cedar deck boards
3)very good
4)no
5) building new deck – 675 sf (will probably stain all sides of the deck boards)
How much stain should I by and what color would you recommend. House is tan/brown brick and fence has a reddish stain.
Clear offers no UV protection so it will gray in a matter of months depending on the exposure to the UV. Might want to get some samples to test out the colors:

Just had house built about 3-4 months ago. The deck is PT pine. I would like to keep it looking new and natural but I have read using clear stain requires recoating every year. What are your thoughts?
For best results you should remove the Thompson’s first with a stain remover. This will ensure a even application and proper adhesion.
TWP 1500 is VOC compliant in all 48 states while the 100 is not.

difference between 100 and 1500?
New wood (if smooth) you weather for 4+ months, then cleaned and brightened before applying the TWP. Nothing else is needed.
1. I would use the 1500 Series and only apply 1 coat.
2. Yes
3. Clean and Brighten with the Gemini Restore-A-Deck Kit to prep.
4. I would not sand.
5. TWP wants you to wait 4-12 months to let the wood season. Do not over apply. Just 1 coat the first time.
I am installing new (untreated) pine vertical board & batten siding on an entire house in the Colorado mountains. Does the wood need to be pretreated before staining?
Hi. I live in Central Texas. I have a 600 sf pressure treated yellow pine deck w/aluminum ballisters. The deck was put into place about three months ago. I believe it is seasoned well enough to take a stain (no previous stain)…and I am prepared to do some orbital sanding —I was wondering several things:
1. Which of your TWP products is the right one for me.
2. Is it ok to do the hand rails and pergola first before I do the decking itself?
3. What cleaner do you recommend for the stain preparation?
4. Do you recommend any sanding with my Ryobi hand held 5″ orbital sander? I have 80 grit sand paper.
5. Are there any other tips/information you think I need?
Thank you…

For brand new wood, TWP will penetrate better if you let the wood weather. The suggested waiting period is 4-12 months.
I would wait until Spring, clean and brighten with the Gemini Restore A Deck Kit, then apply one coat of the 1500.

We have a brand new redwood deck that we would like to use the TWP 1500 Stain on the deck. We would like to stain right away but have read reviews on other sites that suggest waiting.
What should we do?
Thanks for the help!
