We have a cedar fence installed on August 1, 2013. We live in Illinois. How long do I wait to stain and which stain is recommended ?

Steve,

1. Beading water is not important. I would leave it alone for another year.
2. Cannot stain new wood right away, Please read this:

I stained new/dry cedar decking with TWP one year ago in central IL. Exactly one year later the deck (on South side of house) is absorbing water. I have more deck to build, so have two questions:
1. Should I clean (oxyclean or detergent) the one year-old decking, and neutralize (oxalic acid), dry and re-stain with TWP…or wait for more weathering first?
2. How stain my new cedar deck boards (stored in garage for 8 months) before installation given that they will have minimal stain aborption like the boards installed a year ago?

Hello,
I am redoing fecning, using new, unstained, western red cedar and want to preserve the nature color. Posts are 6×6 green (but have been air dried for 6 weeks prior to mounting) and cross bars are kiln dried 2×4. The red hue is a little different due to drying. I am wondering which would be best to uniform the color and protect the wood. I was thinking the twp 1500 cedar tone (or natural), doing 2 coats on the cross bars and one on the posts. Any thoughtds/help would be appreciated

Jeff Greishop,
1. 1500 Series
2. Yes it can be sprayed
3. It should be back brushed
4. Use the Gemini Restore Kit and a light pressure wash for the prep.

RobynG, yes you should use the Gemini Restore Kit to help the wood grain for the stain after sanding.

regena, for this old and dried out deck it would be best to use the 1500 Series. For 1200 sq. feet you would need 10-15 gallons for the two coats.

I have a Mahogany deck. I have sanded the deck to remove all existing materials on the deck. I plan on using the TWP 1500 series stain. I also plan on wiping down the deck with mineral spirits to clean off remaining dust. Is there anything I need to do before I aply stain?

House was built in 2004. Wood decking is conifer 2X6’s. Condition of wood is good. Stain applied at construction, much of it has “peeled”. I have replaced and countersunk all screws, and filled holes with exterior grade wood filler. I have sanded the surface to smooth out irregularities and remove excess wood filler. Color of house aluminum siding is textured grey, Need a stain in the grey range. Total sq. Ft. = 900. Can you supply? Please email or call (307) 326-3731. Thanks you.

1.Age of wood? 10 years +
2.Type of wood? Cedar
3.Condition of the wood? Excellent
4.Has it been stained previously and if so with what brand of stain? Last stain – Cabot, Australian Gold, not well applied.
5.Small description of the area to be treated.
Large deck, spanning length of house, intermittent shade and sun throughout the day – never full sun. Lots of leaves and debri in rain in Pac NW.

Pressure washed and sanded 1 week ago. It rained on the sanded deck the last couple days. But it still looks very bright and ready to stain. Plan on staining next week. I ordered the Dark Oak 1500 series stain. But then I noticed you were advising another user to apply the Restore-a-Deck product on their pine deck. Is this your advice for a cedar deck also?

My deck is 15 years old made with pressure treated lumber. It has never been sealed nor stained. It’s in pretty good condition but I’m getting ready to pressure wash and seal/stain it. I get several hours of extreme UV on it. Which is better for my deck? TWP 1500 or TWP 100. I need to cover 1200+ sq ft.

1) 1 year old
2) Cedar 6′ fence
3)slight greying in places
4) Never been stained
5) 4000 sq. ft.
What series stain do you recommend?
How much do I need?
Can it be put on with a power paint sprayer?
Does it need to be back rolled?
Can another brand be applied on top down the road or do I have to use TWP once it is on the fence?
Is a bleach solution adequate for prepping surface prior to TWP?
Thanks
Jeff

Gary, the 5 gallons pail should be enough for this. Use the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep.

Lou, wood fillers do not work on outside wood and TWP stains will not color them. Do not use them with TWP. Surface cracks are normal and are not a structural issue.

#3 New (good)
#4 No previous stain
#5 Free standing deck around 1/4 of a 24ft diameter above ground pool. Has railings and wood lattice trim around bottom.
The deck is 32ft/16ft=512sq ft minus the 1/4 by the pool. Will 5 gallons of stain be enough for this project? Do I need to use the cleaner and brightner before I stain?

1. 15 years

3. Dry with surface cracks
4. Yes TWP 1000
two decks joined by stairs. flooring 2×6 boards, upper deck has 1x2x6′ cedar boards, lower deck has 2×2 spindles with 2×6 railing.

Once I clean the wood should I attempt to use a filler and sander for surface cracks, especially on the railings? If so, will any good stainable filler work or do you have a suggestion? My other option would bb to replace them but if I did that I would use treated lumber and byte the bullet on a good finishing job for a year. We are having a 50th wedding anniversary party on Aug 24th so I have to get moving on this.
Thank you,

My pressure treated deck is 1 year old and in excellent condition. There is one coat of Olympic waterproofing sealant on it. It looks fine. I want to stain it and plan on using twp 1500 stain this season. My plan is a power wash using just water before application of twp 1500. Is this acceptable?

Karl, since the fence is rough wood you can stain right away with no prep. You can only use the 1500 in IL. The Honeytone 1515 color is the lightest tint.

I recently had a new white cedar (which has a red tint) fence and arbors built. I would like to keep the natural cedar color and the rough-sawn texture. Considering this, and that we live in northern Illinois, what TWP product do you recommend? Also; how long should I wait to seal this new wood and would I need to use a cleaner before I seal?

Thank you.

Cameron, it should be fine after the 4 months. Only 1 coat the first time and make sure to prep with the Gemini Restore Kit. Honeytone 1515 is the closest color to a wet look.

I just installed a cedar deck and plan to treat it in the fall. It will be about 4 months old and will have been exposed to plenty of Colorado UV rays, water, and regular wear and tear. I plan to use the 1500 series. Should the 4 months of wear and tear be adequate before staining? I really like the color of the cedar when it’s wet. What color would you suggest I use?

Steve K, after the sanding I would suggest to use the Gemini Restore Kit before applying the 1500 Series. This will help the stain to penetrate into the wood better.

TWP is not designed to be applied to exotic hardwoods such as IPE. Many customers do use it but you will need to reapply every 9-12 months for IPE.

Hello,

I have installed IPE deck about 4 months ago and need to know which stain would be best between the TWP 1500 series VS TWP 100 series. Since the wood is new, i have let it weather for 4 months and will be staining for the first time.

Thanks

I am looking to re-seal my deck of pressure treated pine which is approximately 9-10 years old. The last stain I used was a Behr semi-transparent product that started to break up after one winter. I was told that the wood was probably still too wet after cleaning (applied cleaner and pressure washed). I should have waited 5-7 days instead of 2…..hmm! What do you recommend? I just sanded the surface to remove most of the stain….what’s next?

As long as the wood is free of previous coatings and cleaner, you should be okay to proceed.

Hello,

I will be re-staining a deck that has been pressure washed and cleaned. I previously used Behr semi-transparent and it had very poor longevity. Your product appears to have the best reviews. I have two questions:

1. Do you know the color of your product that most closely matches Behr Antique Brass color?

2. If there are areas that have some Behr semi-transparent left, can i stain over these areas with TWP 1500?

Thank you,

Cliff

Anthony V, if the fence is rough sawn wood you can stain now. If smooth like a deck board, you need to wait:

I just built a cedar deck in Austin Texas. Our summers are brutal with most days reaching the high 90’s or even 100+ degrees. Winters are mild. My deck gets direct sun for most of the day. I would like the deck to have an enhanced cedar look…but still show the natural wood. What stain do you recommend which holds up well to UV as well heat but doesn’t look like paint? Thanks, Paul

I have a new, unassembled cedar pergola kit. I want to preserve the natural color and structural integrity of the cedar. Is it true that sealers have to have dyes/pigments in order to prevent UV discoloration to gray? Should the product have silicon, oil, pigments, dyes, insecticides, fungicides, etc. What do you recommend?

Chase, they last about the same. The 1500 has a higher solid content so it may give a little better UV protection.

If I am in Minnesota looking at staining new wood, what product would you recommend the 100 or 1500 series. I am not sure I understand the difference between the two products other than VOC rating. Does the 100 hold up better?

Lou, after sanding prep with the Gemini Restore Kit to “open” the grain of the wood so the stain will absorb better.
