Jennifer, use a wood brightener and rinse the deck well to remove any sand dust. Use the 1500 Series for this. Clear does not offer UV protection from graying. Use a tinted color if you want to prevent graying.
19 year od cedar deck. Full sun Southern exposure with small overhang. It has just been power washed then sanded. Does it need anything else before stained and which stain should we use. We have always used a clear stain. I think Cabots or benjamin moore.

Where do you stand on if you apply wet on wet? I would have to stand on the wet stain to apply the second coat of stain then. Can you stand on the stain within 30 minutes in order to put on the second coat?
Ron/Darlene, it will dry eventually but it does sound as if it was applied a little too much in those areas. You could try wiping off some of the excess stain with some mineral spirits.
Yimin,
Cedartone
Rustic
Redwood
Dark Oak
They will all give similar UV protection.
Pj, use the 1500 Series for NY. Apply two light coats wet on wet for best results.
I have applied TWP 1500 1516 Rustic Brown to my 20’by 12′ deck five days ago. The deck wood is 2 by 6 treatd pine about two years old, it is in mostly full sun. The deck was power washed and allowed to dry one week before aplication with no rain. the stain was applied with a brush and is still tacky and wet in some areas and is not drying. Can you advise what to do? Thanks, Ron Kohn
Cedartone, Redwook, Dark Oak, Rustic
Could you please tell me the sequence of pigment level among these stains? Trying to select one that we like but also have more pigment for UV protection.
1. 15-20
2. pine, oak, mix
3. fair–just used Restore a Deck 2 step process to clean and brighten–pretty good results, may do it again while waiting for stain to arrive
4. no stain
5. 25’x10′ , partial sun, full shade, snow, ice, rain, hot–NY Hudson Valley
Opened pails will not last more than 6-12 months unless you close it 100%. 2-3 day shipping
How many days after ordering on line will the stain arrive in NJ?
If we buy the 5 gallon pail, but only use 2 gallon this year. Could we use the remaining stain one year later? How to store the stain properly for one or two years?
Yimin,
1. 1500
2. We only sell oil based stains, no acrylics
3. As long as all of the Behr is removed you can use an oil based stain like TWP.
1. We are in NJ. Should I use 100 or 1500 for the deck?
2. The deck is cedar wood. I read somewhere that said for cedar wood which is naturally agains mildew and insects, it is better to use water based stain such as acrylic. Could you comment on that?
3. We had Behr semi-transparent on the deck and took it off with strippers and cleaned/brightened using Behr products. Now the wood looks like new, with just some fuzzy feel on the surface. I read somewhere that once you used the water based stain, it is hard to get them all off, and it is hard to switch to a oil based stain like TWP. Could you please give us some advice on this?
Yimin, 2-3 years for TWP is normal on a deck. If the wood is free of the behr and clean than you are ready to stain.
Hear TWP is highly rated.
My Cedar Deck, 6 yeas old. Previously stained with Behr. Now stripped and cleaned/brightened with Behr stripper and cleaner.
Should I prep the wood again with TWP products such as restore a deck cleaner kit? WHich kit should I use?
We live in New Jersey. With winter snow, salt to prevent slippery on stairs, and freezing weather. People tell me no matter what stain you use, you will have to re-stain after 2 or 3 years.
How many years can TWP stain last on our south facing deck?
Thanks.
Jason, prep with the Gemini Kit. It might need to be sanded when done since it has grayed a lot. You cannot put a polyurethane finish on outside wood. It will peel. You need a penetrating wood stain like TWP. The 15is what you need to Ohio.
jeraldine, we do not have any pictures. I would suggest getting a sample. About 4 gallons for 1 coat. Please read this about new decks:

My deck is at least ten years old, it’s 1 x 6 pine decking, wood is solid but very gray, no evidence of stain on the deck itself now, but the deck rails are still stained, so it had a coat sometime. It’s about 400 square feet. A Gemini clean and brighten treatment first, and 5 gallons of TWP 1500 is what I would use, if it’s available in New York. I’m open to suggestion on product as i haven’t used yours before.
First off, thanks for such an informative site. Bought a house last fall in Dayton, OH. We have a 2 year old, 16×10 ft deck with pressure treated pine that has never been sealed/stained. It’s pretty gray obviously with a little mold/mildew. Deck has more shade than sun. Sounds like you’d recommend the RAD cleaner/brightner or the Gemeni cleaning kiit… I have 3 gallons of Sherman Williams ‘WoodScapes’ polyurethane stain left over from the previous owner (he used this on the fence)- it’s free (appealing considering we’re on a budget)… but at the same time, I want to use something that is going to last. Your thoughts and why? Thanks in advance!
do u have any photos of decks stained with the color: Black Walnut?
Our new decks are tight-knot cedar, light in color, and recently built
Need to wait until next summer to stain them? (it is now august)
We have 576 sq ft of decking…how many gallons should we purchase?
Lunamoon, only 1 coat for newer wood. I would get a 5 gallon pail.
Leo Chick, You can order the 200 Series from this link:

How much TWP 1500 stain do I need for one initial coat on a new 6-month-old cedar deck; the total square footage of all decking, stairs, fascia, etc. is 772 sq ft. Thanks, LunaMoon
RedwRedwood deck is 20 years old in excellent condition. Size of deck is 1400 sq. feet. Last stain used was a mix of TWP 201 and TWP 203. Since I can’t find any info on these products, they are probably no longer available. What do you recommend. Thank you, Leo Chick, San Rafael, CA.
Patrick, please read:

Marianne, use the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep first. Use the TWP 1500 for the deck and porch. Any color will work. Coverage is about 150-200 sq. feet per gallon.
Bill Yahn, TWP should not be applied on top of the FLOOD and SW. You would need to remove these coatings first.
1. Guessing 20-25 year old deck and porch
2. Treated lumber
3. Good condition. Has grayed.
4. Does not appear to have been stained previously or treated
5. Deck area approx. 20×15 with railing; small porch area 4×5 or so with railing
Faces east and north (small porch); central Illinois climate. Was hand scrubbed last year. What color, how much needed, any other prep? Thanks!
Hello, just got a new boat dock installed with yellow pressure treated pine decking. How long should I wait before sealing with TWP? Any prep work needed? Thanks guys.
25 year pressure treated pine, surrounding a pool, full sun and previously treated with flood and sw deckscapes toner base.I’ve always used a clear and pressure washed prior to retreating.
Mike, you must have color in the stain if you want UV protection from graying. Lighter colors will fade faster than the darker colors. Please read this article about new wood and TWP: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
new attached cedar deck , 60 days old, little use.
Condition excellent. large 20 x 20, elevated, with 3 two side railings and one side 6 foot shadow boarded privacy wall. Also two landing stairway with railings to ground level.
What/ How to finish with ? we like the look and color as close to our natural.
Also expected maintenance schedule?
Thanks
Skeeter, you cannot apply TWP on the old stain. Prep with the Restore A Deck Stripper and pressure washing. Apply the brightener when done. TWP 1501 cedartone is a brownish/cedar color. Might want to get some samples to test first.
Diane Mosley, please read this article about staining new wood: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
What is the total sq. footage when added all up?
20 year old redwood deck, 1000 sq ft.
Cleaned, washed with palmolive soap.
Wood in good shape, some cracks, but smooth, receptive weathered finish. Lots of exposure to southern california mountain sun. Currently various shades of light brown, shading of grays in traffic aress.
Previously stained with Behr Deck plus, then Superdeck 1901 cedar.
Little hint of the original redwood red left but that’s ok – would prefer to end up with a browner lighter color to blend with a rustic house, maybe closer to the cedartone or california redwood (depending on how they would react to redwood).
Brand new never stained light cedar deck (Alaskan yellow?) 28′ X 16′ with railing & two 6 step staircases (one 6’wide, one 4′ wide). Railing has eight 4×4 cedar posts with 72 2x2x36 cedar balisters. 1 X 12 cedar facing board wrapped around exterior border of deck. How much of 1500 or 100 would I need (honey tone)?
Tex, use the Restore A Deck Stripper to remove the Flood than brighten the wood. Coverage is 150-200 per sq. foot for the first coat and 200-300 for the second coat.
viki bale, for best results the TWP should not be applied on top of another brand so yes it should be removed.
1. 1.5 years
2. pressure treated pine
3. light graying with deteriorating (peeling) stain
4. yes, flood not sure if it was oil or water based
5. 16′ x 24′ south facing deck in TN
I was curious about the coverage sq. foot per gallon. Does this account for two coats or just one?
I am putting this product on a previously stained log home. The home is 15 years old and I don’t think it has been re-stained since it was built. The original product is water based and is not peeling anywhere. The wood is porous and only shows some glazing around the knots. Do I need to bring this down to the raw wood ?
Suzanne, you cannot get cedar to look like dark Mahogany. Prep first with the Gemini Restore Kit. Get a couple of samples. Try Dark Oak and Rustic and possibly a combination of the two to get a dark/red brown color.
1. 1 year old
2. Knotty cedar
3. Excellent condition, cleaned and brightened
4. Untreated
5. Large deck, approx 500 sq feet, looking to give the cedar a darker mahogany look for a 100 year old Mediterranean revival home in north/central NJ. Deck faces west and most of it gets lots of late afternoon/early evening sun.
Jennifer, yes it would be the correct stain for you. Make sure to prep the deck first by removing the Flood with a stain stripper and a light pressure wash. Use a wood brightener when done.
I am considering using TWP 1500 for the first time. I have used Flood products in the past. Is this the right product for my situation?
1. 20 years +
2. Cedar
3. Fair
4. Flood CWF
5. Small, outdoor deck with railings and stairs. In shade most of the time. Portland, Or. Jen
Michael Campbell, yes you should reclean the deck with a cleaner and brightener and a light pressure wash.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I pressure washed my deck about 3 months ago, and due the the rain in the southeast this year have not been able to get the required dry time before applying the stain.
The deck is already starting to turn from the natural wood color.
Do I need to re-pressure wash before applying the stain since it has been so
long.
Thank you for the advice.
Mike
Dennis Warren, please read this article:

I just installed a new deck made of kiln dried pressure treated pine. How long should I wait before using a semi-transparent stain? Which do you recommend? What prep should I do before applying the stain?
thanks
