Hi I was wondering if this product can be used to stain over a bear stain product.
Steve F, after removing the BM Arborcoat with the sanding it would be helpful to use the Gemini Restore Kit to remove the sand dust and “open” the wood grain for the stain.
Krisworks, you are supposed to wait 4+ months for new wood before staining. Only 1 coat on newer wood. You can use the 1500 on the other deck after removing the Penofin with the Stripper.
Brian, yes you can use these items for a gazebo roof.
Can I use the wood cleaners/brighteners and 1500 stain on my cedar shake roof on my gazebo? It was never cared for by the previous owner.
We installed an 800+ sq/ft cedar deck in July. I have Restore-a-Deck cleaner and brightener on the ready. The deck faces east and gets spotted sun throughout the day with one small area that receives little to no sun most times of the year. Can I apply TWP 1500 now? Also I have a 200+ sq/ft deck that was installed in January that faces west with many trees around. I used Penofin Oil on it, but it looks awful. I have Restore-a-Deck Stripper. Will the TWP 1500 work for that as well? — Thanks, Kris
douglas fir decking, 7 years old, current pealing solid color BM Arborcoat – will pressure wash and sand off before application. 6×18 covered front porch, and two long uncovered steps leading up to it.
Deck is 4 years old. Pressure-treated lumber. Some mildew. Previously stained with pigmented Behr (Home Depot) sealer that was reported to last for 5 years. Deck is 10’X10′ with railings, spindles and 5 stairs.
If I purchase the 5 gallon container, can the remainder be used next spring to seal the new deck on the back of my house? What’s the shelf life of the product? How long does shipment take?
Ron, the Natural is not clear and does prevent graying. Please read this for color tips:
http://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-1500-colors-explained/
Darlene, you must have a tint for UV protection. This goes for all brands of stain. I would use the TWP 1500. The Honeytone is the lightest tint.
We just had our beach house – cedar shingles – power washed
What should we use to preserve the natural color, protect from sun, extreme temps, etc?
The 1500?
We were hoping to use something clear that would not change the current lt yellow hue & keep it from greeting.
But clear has no uv protection…..
Help
I had a new cedar deck prestained with clear (little tint) Pentrol. It has already grayed out. I am going to clean the deck and want to apply natural TWP 1500. Will the natural prevent graying so fast. We live in Western Washington state. Lot of rain during winter and lot of sun July-Sept.
Dave, strip and brighten the deck for the prep. Try the TWP 1500 Series for this. Nothing though can stop chlorine from eventually breaking down the stain.
I have a cedar deck that faces towards the west and we use it to get in and out of our above ground pool (chlorinated). I have Sikens natural stain on it but only lassted 2months – that was 3 years ago. Most of the stain has worn, peeled off and deck is grey. Will your product last through sunlight and pool water? What are your steps to fix the deck? I like a natural transparent stain to show the grain of the wood. Thanks.
DianeK, yes on everything except the coverage. More like 6-7 gallons for rough wood and one coat.
I just installed rough-cut cedar fencing in my south-facing, inland Southern California lot. Am looking to retain (or come close to) the natural cedar color while maximizing UV protection and minimizing future maintenance.
Is the following correct?
One coat of 1500 natural or honeytone (I’ll order samples).
Can apply now (ie no aging necessary) using stain pad or sprayer and back wiping.
I have approx. 900 sq ft to cover, so plan to purchase a 5 gallons.

How can I remove Cabot solid color oil stain? Deck badly cracked and peeling.
Fran, You can remove most semi-transparent stain with the Restore A Deck Stripper
Would your answer change if the stain was semi transparent?
Fran, you cannot apply TWP on an opaque stain and stain stripper will not remove an opaque stain. You will need to sand it all off for the prep. The 1500 does not come in a gray color.
Doyle, we replied to your questions 3 days ago: http://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-stain
Cedar deck about 15 years old. Treated w Cabot opaque stain. I have cleaned and sanded deck. Stain areas still remain. Do I still need to strip to use your products? I like to Cape Cod gray in the 100 series but that is not available in the 1500 series. What are my options? I live in PA.
“Second Request” We stained a deck & open Boat House on Lake Jacksonville, TX with TWP1500 and noticed that some areas have a glossy finish after drying. How do we get rid of the glossy finish?

I just had a 12 ft x 25 ft deck (treated yellow pine) built 1 month ago. I was wanting to stain it with 1500 series (live in Ohio) #1503 (dark oak). Water no longer beads up (Lumber store told me that it can now be stained) but edges are curling up (temp has been in high 80’s and 90’s last few weeks with minimal rain). I wanted to get your thoughts. If I do stain now, does it need 1 or 2 coats. Does it need treated with anything prior to staining. Deck has not been used yet. Rails are made of Timber Tech (Black with dark brown spindles) so it will not need to be stained. How many gallons of stain do I need
Eric, please read this: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
No need to stain all sides.
I am working on a new deck. Client is very concern about weatherproof and durability of the deck. Since is a new deck with new wood, do we need to stain all 4 side of the 2x before we install the deck? Or we should put 2 coat first before installation and put a final coat after the installation?
Dan, I would look at the TWP 100 Series and you can buy from our website.
just purchased red oak for bed of pickup; wood in perfect condition; not previously stained; 7 boards 6′ x6″; what product would be best?
New porch built last Fall; wood is cedar and Southern Pine
Stained with AMTECO TWP, Shake & Shingle 205 California Cedar
Only one coat was applied; I would like to get or put a second coat on, but can’t find dealer or that product on your web site.
It is still protecting and still looks good, but water does not “bubble” up like it used to and wood is slightly fading on surfaces exposed to sunlight.
Is this product TWP 205 water or spirit based? Is it still available or is there a newer compatible product available?
Is it available locally – Zip Code is 30152, Kennesaw GA (near Marietta GA
Diane D, TWP 100 and 1500 are both semi-transparent. No need to do the underside. Please read this about new wood:
http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Ted Clark, use a stain stripper when pressure washing and use a wood brightener when done. Try the TWP in the Dark Oak or Pecan.
Mitch, most likely it will be fine once it dries. I would not do anything.
I stained deck benches with TWP 1500 and it started raining 7 hours ago. What will I need to do after it stops raining relative to staining the benches. Thank you.
Age: 10 yrs
Type: Pressure treated
Condition: Fair – some crackings; some blistering of grain.
Previous: Semi-transparent oil brand unknown
Description: Small deck, partial sun; want to pressure wash and then stain with medium brown color.
1) New wood-drying for 1 month in garage, spacers & weights are separating the boards
2) Clear heart redwood
3) Pristine condition of wood
5) 260 sq ft deck in Southwest Oregon
Is 1 month enough drying time for new wood (it was pretty dry when delivered)? Should I stain the underside and sides before installing since the deck joists are only inches above ground level? Is the TWP 100 a solid vs semi-tranparent? I have heard TWP100 might be better but I want the redwood to show through while having UV & moisture protection.
Linda,
Do you still have old stain left on the wood? If so they you should use the Restore A Deck Stripper followed by the RAD Brightener for the prep. If no stain use the Gemini Restore kit for the prep.
1. 60 yrs
2. redwood
3. good
4. log oil
5. house has not been oiled for approx. eight years but previoully done every 3-4 years.
Katharina, either series would work fine for you. Being it is dried out wood, the 1500 might be a little better.
Lori, you do not want to use too much chemical as it could be abrasive to the stain. A soft push broom would help. With the grain.
My approx. 10year old Pine deck is approx. 400square feet, mostly full sun. It is cracked and I pressure cleaned it 24 hrs ago. I would like to apply the 1500 series but I am hearing the 100 series is similar?. Can you give me some pointers?
Hmmm – only water, huh? Bummer – I was hoping there was some very mild detergent solution that would be safe because the city dirt is somewhat oily (mainly car exhaust). If using only water, would it be safe to scrub the deck lightly and, if so, is it better to scrub with the grain or against it? I have heard arguments both ways. Thank you.
Lor, I would just use water to remove the dirt. Any cleaners can be abrasive after the stain has been on there for a year.
Fred, rough sawn wood can be stained right away. Just one coat.
Hi – I stained a new redwood deck in San Francisco with California Redwood TWP1500 one year ago. I followed the prep instructions very closely. It turned out great and it still looks good however I would like to give it a VERY mild cleaning just to remove the city dirt and bird droppings – there is no mold or mildew. What product or what homemade solution would be best for this purpose? I really do not want to shorten the life of the existing stain so if that is what would happen if I clean it, then I just won’t clean it until it needs another coat of stain. Thx much for the advice.
