TWP 1500 Series Deck Stain – The Best Low VOC Deck Stain
Need Help with your TWP 1500 Stain?
TWP 1500 Stain is a highly rated, EPA registered wood preservative that can be used for all types of exterior wood, siding and decking. TWP 1500 Stain will perform at its maximum potential when the wood is properly prepped and when the stain is properly applied. Unfortunately not all wood is in the same condition prior to applying the stain.
We are here to help with your project!
Please answer these few questions to achieve the best possible results with your TWP 1500 Wood and Decking Stain.
- Age of wood?
- Type of wood?
- Condition of the wood?
- Has it been stained previously and if so with what brand of stain?
- Small description of the area to be treated.

Had a new western red cedar fence put up about a month ago, only 33 linear feet. Have a few questions.
– I read that WRCedar requires less drying out time. Is that true or should I wait the 4 months?
– Will 1 gallon be sufficient, or should I get 2?
– Will any prep work be needed?
Thanks.
Chris, please read this article on new wood: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
1. Age of wood is about 2 months old (1 month in newly built deck from new order of pt wood)
2. Two types: decking is pt pine and railing is cedar.
3. Condition is very good as it is new. Fresh color still but wood decking is currently shrinking.
4. No previous stain or cleaner
5. To treat decking and structure if needed as well as the cedar railing
Like to know how long to wait for wood to dry and weather before applying the stain (for pt wood and cedar). Pt wood drying/shrinking quickly. 4 hours of direct afternoon sun ( rest shaded or blocked). Located in SE PA.
Also, what prep in needed.
Don’t know if I need to stain before winter (dec) or after in spring (April). Deck built in early september. Railing ( cedar) mid October.
Thank you
Part of the siding is cedar which has never been treated in 20 years. My husband just died and I need a quick fix for this problem. I would like it to last 2 years.
Buzzman100, yes both colors will fade through the years the same and both show the gain of the wood.

If rough wood you can stain with 1 coat now. Use the 1500.
Trying to decide between Natural and Cedar tone for cedar siding that was installed last summer, the cedar siding has begun to fade (whiten). Will both color options lighten same rate due to UV rays and natural elements? Also I would like to see some of the natural grain will both provide it? I have samples and they are very close in color tint. Looking for guidance – Thanks

Eastwood, best to use a deck cleaner and wood brightener for the prep after sanding. It will help the stain to penetrate deeper into the wood grain.
I just purchased TWP1500. I have T&G dough fur porch floor. It was put down last fall. Just finished sanding off any cupping and graying from UV. On the can it says to wash with bleach solution before applying. Is it necessary to wash? I vacuumed up all dust.
RSMackie, TWP is thinner then the Sikkens and can be sprayed and back brushed if desired.
Gretchen, wait until Spring. Please read: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
NateC, try rinsing with water. It should come off
Stained fence with 1515, finished 30 hrs ago. Mowed lawn, which was very dry at the very back…lots of dirt and dust. A light coat of dust is on fence…did not come off with some air from compressor…am I screwed? Will rain later this week help?
We have a brand new deck, built in early August and with a few boards replaced in early September. The wood is c-select pine. Our deck is in full sun until about 2pm. Should we stain and seal the deck in November or wait until spring? We want to be sure the harsh winter weather doesn’t damage the wood before sealing!
4 years ago I stayed with cetol semi transparent stain. It peeled almost immediately despite having prepped according to manufacture recommendations.
Deck is now 5 yrs and recently stripped with RAD stripper and brightener combo. Wood is in good shape with minimal splits.
Question: to spray or not to spray. I was told the sikkens could be sprayed and back brushed but was too thick to spray from pump sprayer. Same with 1500 series? Also, rolling vs. Spraying? Which is better application method? Sikkens was thick and didnt penetrate well…is TWp 1500 thinner in composition?
Thanks for the reply,
RSM
Forgot to mention it is pressure treated pine! Thx

Dennis, up to you if you want to do it now or Spring. If now then only 1 coat. If in Spring, you can most likely apply two light coats wet on wet. Minimum temp is about 45-50.
I live in upstate NY. My new PT 350 sf deck was finished in early May of this year. I plan to order TWP 1500 (5 gallons) and want to know if I should seal my deck this fall or should I wait until next spring. In either case, what is the minimum daytime temperature should it be applied? I understand that with new wood, only one coat is required.
Jeff, you need to remove the old stain 100%. Problem is the SW can be difficult to get off. Most likely you can strip off some and sand the rest. Brighten when done. Try some samples when to see on the color.
I have a deck made of pressure treated pine in good condition approximately five years old.
Has three coats of S-W water based Deckscapes Spice Chest color stain that is peeling and mildewing six months after a second coat was applied.
Would like some advice on how best to remove old stain and prepare deck for new TWP.
If possible do you have a recommendation as to what color most closely matches what is there now?
Thank you very much,
Jeff
Burton, please read this about new wood: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Eastwood, I would suggest the 1500 Series after properly prepping the wood to remove the Thompsons on the exposed sides.
Kim, TWP does come in a clear but it does not offer UV protection. You must have a tint/color if you want to protect from graying. It is not shiny.
We just purchased a home that has 100 year old logs on the sides….. And we were told by our home inspector that we need to seal the logs. They have recently been treated for post powder beetles. We were researching and wanted to ask if TWP would be the right product to put on the logs. We would want to put on a “clear” color in order to not cha ge the color of the logs too drastically. Does it come in a clear type finish. Also, is it very shiny or is it more of a matte finish? Tha ks so much for your help.
Kim
I am trying to find the best product to protect my year old t&g douglas fur porch floor. It was rolled on both sides with Thompsons before laying to get a quick coat of protection. It is an open covered porch. Does get wet and does receive sun. I looked at spar varnishes but not sold on them.
1-age is new 2-pressure treated pine 3-condition is excellent
4- never stained before
5- deck of 1000 sq feet most of which gets sun
Karen, TWP does not come in a shiny type finish.
my Mom’s deck had sikkens on it ,just sanded , deck is cedar and rails pine,She likes the shiney finish. Sikkens not the best reviews,Help Thanks Karen
Liz, the application sounds correct but you will need to remove the old stain first. Either series will work.
Hello-
Age of wood – 2006
Type – cedar
Condition – good (but home located near ocean)
Previously stained in 2006 (used Olympic Maximum Water Prof Seal Oil Base Color 716 Cedar Natural)
Having entire home re-stained. Painter suggested your product in Cedar color. Said he would use hand-pump to get in the cracks & brush over. Is that the best way to do it? Which of your products should he use.
Many thanks!
Liz
Jakob, try this article for color tips:

Sarah, any color will work. I would highly suggest getting some samples to test first.
I’m trying to choose a color in the TWP 1500 series for a weathered set of stairs with a small deck at the top (pressure treated pine). The stairs look to be several years old and are in decent shape, and have not been previously stained or painted. My home sits adjacent to the stairs, and has white vinyl siding with red shutters – any suggestions on color?
10 months old treated pine decking good condition nothing on it . Large deck 20×28 plus at least a 5×20 ft walkway and spindles
Can I only order TWP online? And what color looks best on the pressure pine?
Lauren, you will have to redo every 2-3 years but it should perform better then the Super Deck when it comes to UV protection and overall water protection. Unfortunately nothing will stop heavy wearing as you will eventually wear away the wood and the stain that had absorbed into the wood.
Ines, you should be fine as long as you apply during the day with the temps are above 45 and it has a few hours to dry before night comes.
Live in MN. Temps are now getting down to 40’s at night. Need to sand, strip, remove old stain and try your TWP1500 natural color perhaps. Should I wait till spring with cooler temps ? How long does two coats take to dry ?
I have a cedar deck that is 25+ years old. Previously we used super deck stain and it worked well. The past 4 years the deck has become our main entrance into the house and the super deck just doesn’t hold up to the traffic. Would your stain be a better fit for my application? We also live in the northern part of SD. How does your product hold up to our summers and winters and how long will the stain normally last before we have to reapply
KevinK, I would just do one coat now and a light maintenance coat next Spring.
Michael, use the 1500 Series for this. Two coats wet on wet for this older deck.
Greetings. I have a pressure treated southern pine deck which has been neglected (by me) for 15. The wood is weather beaten and cracked in places. I used to put wood preservative on it periodically – Cuprinol.
It has never been stained. I am now in the process of cleaning the deck with a power washer to remove dirt, grit and mold. I will also sand and expect to get the deck down to almost original wood. What should I use – I have read your reviews and you are rated No. 1. We live in a harsh climate – Central Vermont where we experience all extremes. It is now mid-September.
Thank you.
Oh we plan on using TWP 1500 Series Redwood (or similar) shade.
I have a 7 yr old redwood deck that was previously stained. I sanded the entire deck with 40 grit sandpaper so the wood looks new but is not baby bottom smooth. Should I go with the 2 coats (wet on wet) or should 1 be OK? Any other tips as I am not sure if this situation falls under “new” deck or not? Thanks
[Thanks for the info.
Mike, sand the end caps for the prep before applying the latex paint.
Kenny, wait until Spring, prep with the Gemini Restore Kit and use the 100 Series.
We just installed a new pressure treated pine deck. I understand we should wait 4-12 months to stain so the wood will accept the stain better. Is the 100 or the 1500 series recommended for North Carolina? What is the best way to tell if it is ready to stain?
Twp
I have new cedar pillars and caps treated with twp. We are interested in painting just the caps. Can I put ext latex over the twp treated caps? How shoud I prep if so?
Thanks
Zion, no you cannot apply TWP or any brand on top of Behr. You must remove the Behr first.
