TWP 1500 Series Deck Stain – The Best Low VOC Deck Stain
Need Help with your TWP 1500 Stain?
TWP 1500 Stain is a highly rated, EPA registered wood preservative that can be used for all types of exterior wood, siding and decking. TWP 1500 Stain will perform at its maximum potential when the wood is properly prepped and when the stain is properly applied. Unfortunately not all wood is in the same condition prior to applying the stain.
We are here to help with your project!
Please answer these few questions to achieve the best possible results with your TWP 1500 Wood and Decking Stain.
- Age of wood?
- Type of wood?
- Condition of the wood?
- Has it been stained previously and if so with what brand of stain?
- Small description of the area to be treated.

Dale, you let the rain water dry off then wipe the spots with a wet rag? It may just be mineral deposits from the rain water.
just finished 800 sq ft deck
starting raining about 14 hours after applying had puddles and made puddle marks anyway to fix this??
Lee, you should wait about 4 months then clean and prep the cedar with the Gemini Restore Kit. It will wipe off the railings (when wet) but it will not wipe off the composite.
I have a new composite deck with new Cedar Railing. The cedar railing has aluminum ballusters. I want to stain the Cedar railing with natural color. Preserve the natural cedar color.
Should i wait to stain or can i stain right way?
Also, is it easy to wipe the stain off from the aluminum ballusters or composite deck?
1. new cedar wood 3 weeks
2. Cedar
3. new cedar
4. never been stained
5. cedar railing
Thanks,
Lee
Tom, let it dry for 48 hours after a rain before applying the TWP. Stain pad like these are better:
http://www.twpstain.com/padco-stain-pads
Tom, yes you should be okay but best to start early in the day so the stain has time in the afternoon to dry into the wood. You do not want to finish at dusk with and have it freeze overnight.
I wanted to add to my question about temperature but didn’t see a way to edit my post….how soon after a rain is it safe to apply this?
I plan to apply with a brush, long handled semi stiff bristled car wash type of brushed if that seems acceptable.
Thanks.
I have a pressure treated deck, about 8 years old that’s been previously stained by a box store available stain (can’t recall which). Very little of the stain remained after I cleaned it with some cleaner, which I can’t recall the name of (ordered online, not box store), and a scrub brush and pressure washer.
My question is, I have daytime highs in the low 50’s right now (sometimes higher) and evenings usually about 35-40 (some warmer)….is this a safe temp range to use TWP1500?
I’d really like to get this done before winter arrives.
Thanks.
Adam, coverage is about 150 sq. feet per gallon for rough wood. best to do two coats wet on wet. Please read this for more info: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
3 month old rough sawn treated pine fence pickets never stained
How much square foot coverage will I get per gallon?
Will 1 coat using a pump sprayer suffice or do I need 2?
What is the recommended application method and what is the lowest temperature tolerance during and the days following application?
Thanks
Marty, sorry but there is not a solid stain in TWP. Wood putty does not really work well on outside wood and it does not “stain” with exterior stains like TWP. The only thing you can do is use a filler that is already tinted.
Hi team – we love the 1500 pecan semi transparent but the wood putty for the nail holes looks terrible beneath it. It is on some old and beautiful heart redwood. Do you either have a) any recommendations for wood putty that looks good with this stain or b) a pecan solid stain? The pecan semi trans is fabulous for every part of the house except for the garage and front doors where there is too much putty.
Thanks
Marty
The Restore A deck Stripper we sell and a pressure washing should remove most of the One Time. Use the RAD Brightener when done.
Eric, you cannot apply TWP on top of the One Time. It would need to be stripped or removed first. I would prep correctly, brighten the wood and apply the TWP 1500.
Do you have any suggestions for stripping the One Time?
Larry, please read this article about staining new wood:

Maybe May?
I live in the Seattle, Wa. area (Langley on Whidbey Island) and just completed a home with cedar board and batten. It’s late in the season to paint now, should I be concerned with weathering if I wait until spring to coat? Based upon our weather pattern, what month in the spring would you recommend I paint?

17 years
Redwood
Good condition, for the most part
Stained with One Time Wood 5 years ago
The color of the redwood still looks pretty good, other than some bleaching in the sunny areas. However, there is no water repellance. There is some deterioration of the wood in places, but overall, it is in good shape. The area is shade to part sun. 800 sf of deck
As long as the TWP as 4 hours to dry in the day it should not be affected if temperatures drop into the 30’s at night. You would not want wet stain and have it drop below freezing though.
Hi,
I noticed the TWP stain should be applied when the temperature is between 45°-95°. The temperature is getting cooler and I was wondering if it is okay to apply the stain when the temperature is around 50°-55° (during the day), but at night the temperature is around 30°-35°. Will this be okay?
Clark, use the Gemini Restore Kit and a light pressure washing for the prep before applying the TWP 1500.
Let’s try this again. What prep work is needed?
14 month old pressure treated deck
never stained or painted
great shape
10x 50

We have a o14 month old pressure treated pine deck that measures roughly 10 by 60 with stairs and railing. The deck is in good condition and is natural never treated. I would like to use TWP 1500 here in Plymouth, Massachusetts. What prepping procedures do you recommend or just apply the stain?
Clark
Robert, you need to remove the Behr which can be difficult. Best to use a deck stain stripper and pressure washer to remove as much as possible, sand the rest if needed, brighten the wood when done.
Have a customer that has a 2year old deck great condition.Pressure treated pine, he has stained already 1 year ago with behr transparent cedar natural tone 100 percent penetrating acrylic. how do I clean, and restain with your 1500 product. I am concerned he will not be happy with the results having already stained then restaining over that. Thanks for any help Robert Carr
Deck has been in 6 weeks live in Gadsden Al. Wood is treated pine wood is in very good condition. Never stained. Deck and porch. Have checked wood for moisture content with meter. It’s below 14% As wood is new what should I use to clean? Can I stain it now?
No, need to wait. Please read:

Marty Skyrman, I would clean it first and apply the TWP 1500 Clear. It will help prolong the life.
The instructions on the last TWP1500 pail I purchased says one to one solution of water/bleach is okay for cleaning. Is that right or do I need to buy the expensive restore kit?
Better to use the Gemini Kit. More effective, better results, and better for the wood.
Ron, wait until Spring and prep with the Gemini Restore Kit.
Brand new deck – Pressure treated (Lifewood treated lumber with water repellent).
Approx 800 sq. feet. I live in CT and would like to know if I should stain now or wait until next spring.

mbassili, it will be fine if you use it next year. Make sure that it does not freeze. Stir well in Spring!
17 year old fascia board
Cedar
Sun weathered
Don’t know if it was treated previously, I doubt it, it it was treated it was a clear treatment
Is it worth treating this cedar fascia at this point? It seems to be in overall good shape but maybe I can prolong its life. What’s the best product. Want a clear treatment.
Hi,
I bought the TWP 1515 Stain back in July 2013. I didn’t have time to apply to my deck yet. Is it ok to wait and stain it next summer? Are there any procedures that I need to do to preserve TWP in good condition, or before I apply it next year?
Thanks,
Don, need to remove the Porter water based stain first and that may prove ti be difficult. Strip off what you can, sand the rest if needed, apply brightener.
Apply TWP 1500 when prepped.
1) 3 years
2) pressure treated pine
3) good
4) Stained with porter acri-sheild transparent oil/water base
5) 130 SF around pool & 360 SF main deck full sun.
Matt, prep with the Gemini Restore Kit to restore the color. Stain with the TWP 1500, any color that you like.
I have a deck that’s less than 18 mos old.
Has never been stained. All the oils and natural color of the wood has faded and it has grayed out.
It’s treated lumber. What is the best thing to do for it and is there a better reccomendation for color choice?
Thanks,
Matt
Debbie, remove all remnants of the Superdeck with the Restore A Deck Stripper followed by the brightener. Try TWP 1502 Redwood or the 1511 California Redwood.
1) 9 yrs
2) Redwood
3) Good
4) Yes with SUPERDECK Semi-Transparent Stain
5) Gazebo
Looking for a semi tranparent in a redwood color, not to cover but to enhance the wood.

Thanks
1. Brand new swing set
2. Pressure treated pine
3. Excellent condition. Sanded.
4. No
Brand new pressure treated pine swing set. Sanded and smooth.
Jayson Tyler, yes you can mix 1500 colors together to achieve a new color. Make sure to prep with the Gemini Restore Kit.
Matt, should be the same or maybe a little more. Depends on the prepping and if the wood has dried out.
If I previously used about 4 gallons of stain on my deck about 4 years ago, will I need about more/less/the same to do it again this year?
Age of wood – 9 years
Condition is good
Previously stained with TWP 500 (Honeytone). Will be using TWP 1500 Honeytone.
Thank you for your time.
Matt
1. 18 mos
2. Pressure treated pine
3. partially weathered
4. no previous stains
5. 20×14 deck (Staining horizontal decking)
Can you mix TWP 1500 stains for desired color? I was hoping to darken Pecan with a small amount of Dark Oak to more closely match siding stain (different manufacturer).
thanks!
Eric, http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
