Need Help with your TWP 1500 Stain?
TWP 1500 Stain is a highly rated, EPA registered wood preservative that can be used for all types of exterior wood, siding and decking. TWP 1500 Stain will perform at its maximum potential when the wood is properly prepped and when the stain is properly applied. Unfortunately not all wood is in the same condition prior to applying the stain.
We are here to help with your project!
Please answer these few questions to achieve the best possible results with your TWP 1500 Wood and Decking Stain.
- Age of wood?
- Type of wood?
- Condition of the wood?
- Has it been stained previously and if so with what brand of stain?
My deck is roughly 900 sq ft with 13 steps 4′ wide. The wood is 20 years old and in pretty good shape. I previously used Cabot Australian Wood Oil and Olympic stain. Cabot didn’t last and Olympic wouldn’t dry. 240 sq ft is covered and the rest is open. I live in NE Kentucky. I just finished cleaning the entire deck with Krud Cutter deck cleaner and a power washer. What do you suggest for staining this deck? Thanks – Jim
Jim, you need to remove the old coatings to use TWP correctly. Did the cleaner remove? If not than you need to strip off. Use 1500 Series for this.

It should remove it.

Jay, you will have to remove the Cabot first. How to depends on what type of Cabot it is as they are not all the same. Northern VA and you will need 1500 Series otherwise you can use either.
I have a deck approx. 4 yeas old. Previously stain with cabot and did not like at all. Please advise on 100 or 150 and how to correct this situation. I live in Virginia. Thanks Jay

I have a four year old pressure treated pine deck around my pool on the south side in the Nashville TN area. Deck is exposed to sunlight from 9:00 AM until 5:30 PM. Used One Time wood a month after deck was completed. Wood is in good shape. Will the One Time need to be stripped or can I just wash the deck and apply TWP? Which TWP product would be best for this application?

PT pine
Condition is good
Previously stained with Sikens Cetol DEK
Wood deck with rails, stairs, and pergala type room
I’m thinking about using TWP 1500 vs. Sikens. Do I have to strip the old Sikens off? Any guidance is appreciated.
Yes it is best to remove the Sikkens before switching to TWP. This allows the 1500 Series to soak deep into the wood grain.
I just sent away for two of your samples. My deck will need only about 2 gallons. I know it wouldn’t be guaranteed, but if I bought a 5 gallon container and stored the remainder in my basement (unfinished basement but does not get cold in winter, no lower than 50 degrees), do you think it would be okay to use for maintenance coat in one to two years? I know it’s not guaranteed, but in your experience… Thanks, Wendy
Just the RAD Stripper and Brightener. Yes you have to back brush after spraying to get a consistent application and appearance.
25 years
pt pine
“Floor” of deck is greenish, verticals and small protected areas (under welcome mats, for instance) still have Behr semi-transparent acrylic from 2 years ago.
Most of deck just needs cleaning, parts need stripping, do I need both RAD products? Also, if I apply TWP 1500 with generic garden pump sprayer, do I need to go over it after with a brush to smooth it?
Thanks.
John, yes the clear allows the wood to gray naturally.
We are planninh to install 5/4 x 8″ cedar as a siding. We want to allow the cedar to gray but also want to presserve it. Will your 1500 clear allow the cedar to age?
Thanks,John
You cannot apply TWP on top of the Penofin. Use the Restore A deck stripper and pressure washing to remove first. Apply Restore A deck Brightener when done. Use the TWP 100 Series for CO.

Must remove the Sikkens first with the Restore A Deck Stripper and Birghten when done before applying TWP. Two light coats wet on wet application.
1. Approx 15yr old deck
2. Cedar
3. Fair condition. Small cracks in a number of places.
4. Penofin (siera color) every year or two. Lasted stained a year ago, but in good condition. Recently pressure-washed.
5. Approx 600sqft deck, facing East (parts get sun virtually all day). In Denver, so intense sun, low humidity & high temps are an issue in summer; snow & low temps in winter.
Have always used penofin. Was looking at TWP for a change. Not sure whether 100 or 1500 would be better; whether TWP can be applied over penofin; or what prep-work might be required beyond the annual pressure washing & deck cleaner.
Thanks!

Daniel, use the Restore A Deck Stripper to remove the old coating and the RAD Brightener when done. This will prep it for a new coating of the TWP.

Need to remove the SW first before using the TWP this can be stripped and or sanded to remove. Once removed, we would suggest the TWP 1500.

Erich, you can sprayer with a pump sprayer or an electric sprayer. Yes you should back brush after.
1. 1 year
2. Western Red Cedar
3. Very good condition. Starting to get some “graying”
4. Never been stained
5. 6 ft. tall privacy fence. 185 ft. total length.
What is the best way to apply the stain? Can an electric sprayer such as a Wagner Power Painter be used or must it be applied with a pump sprayer? Does it need to be “brushed in” after spraying?

George, it is not possible to use TWP on top of a solid stain. You would have to remove the solid stain first by sanding.

Liem, try the 100 series. Probably 3 gallons for IPE.

Dan, the wood will not gray for months but best to get this stained within 2 weeks of the prep work.
I live in upstate NY. Yesterday I completed all my prep work using Your the Restore a Deck product. Everything worked as advertised as my 1 year old PT deck is ready to be stained with your TWP 1500 Cedartone. Now all of a sudden the weather reports have changed and rain is expected tomorrow and a couple of times this and early next week. How long should/can I wait before I have to consider having to re-prep before staining? How long before the wood starts to “gray”. Other suggestions?
Steve, What’s the total sq. footage? Need to prep first with Gemini Restore Kit. You can get small sample bottles to test color from our site.
Elaine, for MA you can only use the TWP 1500 Series. You do need to remove the Behr first before applying the TWP.
Ricco, use the Gemini Restore Kit to prep.
We have installed a Southern Red Pine deck in North Carolina about a year ago. It has never been stained and has weathered just a bit. What should we prep with before staining with TWP?
thanks, rich
I have a 20yr old pressure treated wood deck. It has been care for since the first year. In excellent condition, but I am not happy with Behr stains over the past 3 years. Not lasting and peeling. What product would recommend for my deck, I live in the Mass. area. Long and hard winters.
1. 11 months old
2. Western Red Cedar
3. Good Condition
4. Never stained
5. 2,460 SF Shadow Box Fence (246 lf X 5′ High X 2 (sides)
1) How many gallons do I need?
2) additional products required?
3) how can I get wood chip samples of colors?(I have to match neighbors fence) Thanks.
Jeff Wade, prep with the Gemini Restore Kit first before applying TWP. Horizontals typically need reapplication every 18-36 months while verticals can last twice as long.
Wood is 3-4 yrs old, pressure Treated Pine, good condition, never stained, only cleaned, & wanting to treat entire surface area. Wondering IF I would want to prep any special way, what is “life” of product once used until a recoat is necessary OR do you just refresh with new product.
Mikey, you should not prestain. Please read this about new wood: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Best to get a couple of samples for the colors from our site.
