Hi,

Our brand new redwood deck has been done for about two weeks. This is non-kiln dried wood with a reported moisture content of around 12%. We are in NorCal where it is now sunny, dry and warm. We plan on cleaning/brightening the deck with Restore-A-Deck. How long to wait to stain the deck. Likely using one of the TWP 1500 series colors for this.

Thanks!

Rick

Jeff Z, I would use the 1515 Honeytone and apply just one coat for the first time. Make sure to clean and prep with the Gemini Restore Kit. For application help, please read these articles.

I finished a new deck out of Pressure treated lumber about 5 months ago. Haven’t decided on a color but want to go with something light like Honeytone. Which TWP product do you recommend for first time application? How much will I need for approx 750sf? Can I use a paint sprayer for application or does this need to be brushed/rolled. Any other application/prep tips? Thanks!

Jim, prep with the Gemini Restore Kit first. I would use the TWP 1500 in any color but take inconsideration that darker/richer colors will take longer to fade from the UV.

Joy, you can use the Black Walnut on your wood but make sure that you back wipe an excess stain if it does not absorb in 30 minutes or so.

Strip and brighten the deck with the Restore-A-Deck products then stain with the 1502 Redwood if looking for a similar color.

Deck is 25 y o pressure treated pine in good condition. Was stained 3 years ago with Sherwin William redwood deck stain. Deck has a southern exposure with very little shade in northern Maine. Recommendations? Thank you

I would do a light cleaning to remove dirt and grime then apply a light maintenance coat to the horizontal flooring.

First stained with 511 about 3 years ago. Stained the deck again last year Deck looks as though it needs to be done again, balusters and any upright wood looks fine but any flat surface looks very dull. Any suggestions for preparation before staining again that will have a decent look after a year.

Stephanie, you would want to clean and prep with the Gemini Restore Kit then use the 1515 Honeytone. TWP though is not compliant for Canada.

I have a one year old previously untreated cedar deck that has grayed. I know I need to clean it up prior to staining. Straight west exposure so lots of sun. We live just outside of Toronto so extreme cold common in the winter. We would like it to look like the colour of wet cedar. What do you recommend?

Jim, you should use the Gemini Restore Kit with the pressure washing. The wood will turn out better and it will make it easier as well.

Approx 600 sq. ft. deck, back & side. Back (275 sq.ft)5 yrs old 1/2 shade 1/2 sun, never treated, serious mildew problem, some boards show bad cracking and warpage (to be replaced).
Side (325 sq. ft)3 yrs old, never treated mostly sun until early-afternoon. Mostly dirty and some mildew under deck railing. Wood in good shape. Cleaned small area with Jomax deck cleaner (Lowes. Brightened wood quite a bit but took one hour for 40 sq. ft. and had to scrub with brush. All wood is PT southern yellow pine. Am thinking of using elec pressure washer (1300 psi)on rest of deck. What other method might you suggest?

Natalie, new wood is supposed to weather 4-12 months before applying the TWP and needs to be prepped properly. Adding more stain now will cause issues as it will not penetrate. I would leave it alone then remove the light coat in 6 months or so before changing.

Kyle, As long as the Behr is removed then the TWP will work properly for your deck. Typically lasts 2 maybe 3 years in the Midwest.

We had a new cedar deck installed a couple of weeks ago. Upon completion the builder applied a light coat of TWP 100 series stain. We want to re-stain with a darker stain and a more thorough coat. What prep needs done? Do we roll on the stain where we can and paint areas like the sides and steps?

3-year old pressure treated deck. Need to strip Behr stain for 2nd time…both times it really started to peel and flake. Wood is in relatively good shape minus the flaking and peeling. Been stained twice with Behr semi-transparent. Read great reviews of your product…will the 1500 series work ok on the pressure treated deck? I plan on stripping it and brightening this weekend before applying stain. Our deck gets full sun in the Midwest, and winters are somewhat harsh. Very frustrated with Behr stain…want a stain that is going to last at least a few years.

Kenny, It seems you have a solid color stain for this deck already? You cannot use TWP on this. You would need to sand off the Duron first then you can use the TWP 1500.

We added a 3 season room and deck last year. All wood is new untreated cedar. We’d like to treat the wood for weathering, sun, and enhance the color of the wood. I’m considering the TWP 1500 stain, probably the Cedar stain. Anything comments or tips before we proceed?

Kim, you can stain the floor then walk back on to reapply. Just do not step in your second coat. Please read this for more info:

I built a pt pine deck last summer. I’d like to stain in this spring. I’m interested in your TWP 1500 but I’m a bit confused with the “wet on wet” application. How can you stain a horizontal deck then turn aroung and re-apply stain over the wet surface?

Tim, you would need to remove the BM first with the Restore-A-Deck stain stripper followed by the brightener. You can get samples in the top menu. There is an button to order them.

15 yr old redwood deck, good condition. every few years I sand the deck and apply BenjaminMoore transparent deck stuff. after 1 or to years the redwood starts to gray and grow mildew. im in central jersey so hot/cold extremes. whats best…twp 1500 or 100? do I need to do anything except for cleaning to apply twp product? the B-M stuff seems to absorb into the wood since I notice that after a yr the wood becomes permeable to water again. i like the natural color of the redwood so would “rustic” be better than “CA redwood” color? how do I get samples?

If it is rough then you do not need to clean first.

Lynn, it would be best to remove the Cabot so the TWP can properly penetrate into the wood and adhere. This will give the TWP 1500 the proper prep for maximum performance. You can use the RAD Stripper followed by the RAD Brightener to remove the Cabot.

TWP is an exterior stain. While it may be used indoors, it will have strong odor for application and will linger for a time. Either 100 or 1500.

Live in central Texas. pressure treated wood flooring and cedar rails and trim. Wood is 5 years old and in good condition. not a lot of mildew. Moderately bleached from sun but still looks pretty good. NOT stained previously. About 1000 sq ft floor area.
How is TWP 1500 applied… What preparation is recommended. Thanks

Suzanne, you cannot blend or hide a dark color with a light color. You would need to either remove the rest, choose a similar color, or accept that it would be uneven with choosing a lighter color.

I have a 13 year old redwood deck that has been stripped down to the bare wood/sanded. There is still some sparse, darker residual stain in some deeper pitted areas of the wood. I love the light color of the redwood but worry about the potential for uneven color. What TWP 1500 stain would you recommend to keep the wood light in color but still lessen the contrasts of the residual stain that is not removable?
Thanks

You would want to remove the OneTime (did it darken in color) with the Restore-A-Deck Stain Stripper followed by the brightener. Once prepped, let the wood dry for a couple of days then apply 2 coats wet on wet to the docks. See here for info on that:

I have 2 docks. Pressure treated wood. Currently treated with onetime wood stain. Wood in good condition. Part gets a lot of sun other part in shade. Some problems with green, mildew? Not sure but want to retreat.

The wood mus the completely removed of any paint or solid stain before applying a penetrating semi-transparent stain like TWP 1500.

After sanding the floor you would want to clean and brighten the sanded floor and new railings for the prep.

We are very interested in twp 1500, and would like your advice before purchasing. Our deck is previously painted/stained redwood with unknown paint by previous owner, and Olympic stain by us. We are refurbishing with new wood railings (should the new wood be sanded to remove printing?)and sanding the previously stained decking, replacing some badly aged boards (house was built in 1976). By all reviews read, we feel TWP is our best option. Are we doing everything right?

I would suggest using the Gemini Restore Kit to clean and brighten. This will help the stain to penetrate better.

Mistakenly sanded new redwood slats for my fence. Used 80 grit and followed up with 120 grit. Now, I find that that wasn’t a good idea as I closed the pores by sanding. I’m planning on installing the slats soon. What can I do before staining to open the pores. I was planning on waiting a month or two before doing the staining. What do you suggest I do?
