Need Help with your TWP 1500 Stain?
TWP 1500 Stain is a highly rated, EPA registered wood preservative that can be used for all types of exterior wood, siding and decking. TWP 1500 Stain will perform at its maximum potential when the wood is properly prepped and when the stain is properly applied. We are here to help with your project!
Please answer these few questions to achieve the best possible results with your TWP 1500 Wood and Decking Stain.
- Age of wood?
- Type of wood?
- Condition of the wood?
- Has it been stained previously and if so with what brand of stain?
- Small description of the area to be treated.

I recently used this product to stain my covered porch and noticed that it seems to hold it’s color well when accidently spilled on the concrete patio. Can I use this to cover all of the concrete patio or do you recommend another product?
I would like to use this TWP 1500 stain on a wooden “tree fort/playhouse” that tend to be in most back yards now days and a wooden hexagon picnic table with attached seating (all wood minus screws). Is it safe to put on the items? The “tree fort/playhouse” is around 10-15 yrs old, previously stained however use, time and weather have washed it away, the wood is in good condition. As long as the wood is free of coatings then you are good to proceed with using the TWP. It will work great for the fort and table.

You cannot spot fix perfectly. Only thing you try is using a rag with mineral spirits and wipe off the excess shiny stain that is on top of the wood. It may help some.

I have a cedar railing and trellis that’s 25 years old. It was stained with Messmer stain. I stripped the stain off using Gemini remover. I am going to use Messmer brightener and sand. Or do I sand first, then use the brightener. Then use TWP.

How long after using prep kit should you stain fence?

You may need to strip and start over. Feel free to reply to your email with some pictures.
Hello’
The wood is wolmomized, 30 years old, stained (brand ?)three times with a solid latex stain which has had a stain remover applied (did not work very well, even though directions were followed). This was followed with the neutralizer brightener. About 50% percent of the stain has been removed. The deck has been pressure washed three times to assure no flaking stain remains.
I have seen numerous negative comments about the deck restore type products which I am now ruling out. I am now looking for the best stain to meet my needs…. suggestions?

You cannot use TWP on top of a solid stain. You would need to sand it all off first.

I still need to do a few touch ups plus stain the wood lattice that encloses the underneath of my deck. My question is….if I buy another 5 gallon pail and have stain leftover how long will it stay good? A year, three years? How should it be stored? Room temperature? Thank you in advance for your help.

The most important thing is to make sure there is no evaporation of solvents and temperature. Please read this:
I’m looking at a deck that hasn’t been maintained for about 20 years, since it’s original installation. I matched the color to Behr’s Natural Redwood but upon doing more research I found that your products were much higher rated, and Oil Based which I much prefer. I believe but cannot ascertain for sure that the original stain was oil, due to it’s age. Conditions: Wood solid, stain faded. I would wire brush nylon/steel by hand rather than use chemical due to dry conditions of existing finish. Trial area indicated that at least 75% of existing finish would be removed with a light brushing and pressurized air cleanup. Any further recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Peter you need to remove 100% of the old finish before using TWP. Your method also may result in leaving metal in the wood that will result in black rust spots. I would not do it this way unless you are 100% certain that no metal will come off your tools.

Try a water based graffiti remover and pressure washing. You can get that at a local hardware store.

Pressure treated pine.
Recently powered washed (aggressively).
(only cleaning to date)
Never treated before.
Very weathered, but recent power washing has removed the dirt mold and oxidation.
Question 1. With the recent deep clean power washing, are the Gemini Restore steps still needed before staining with the TWP 1500?
Question 2. Why is the shelf life of unused product so short, 1-2years? If the product is so good, it will be longer than two years before I need to
re-apply. Would storing unused product in a smaller container with less air make the product last longer?
As long as it clean you do not have to use the Gemini Kit at this point. Probably not on the shelf life of an opened container. It may be fine longer but we cannot guarantee it.
I recently purchased 7 gallons of TWP 1500 Natural stain to use to re-stain my 9 year old decks. I purchased this product based on stain product reviews on the internet. The decks were last stained about 4 years ago and have faded badly, except areas under cover. The person doing the job called me saying that there is a warning on the 1 gallon can label saying you have to strip off any old stain before applying TWP. Why doesn’t it say that in the information on your web page for this product. It says in the “How To Apply TWP 1500 Stain” that you need to clean the wood with a quality cleaner then pressure wash, and let dry for 48 hours before applying. No mention about stripping off the old stain. If I had read that I had to strip the deck first I would not have purchased this product. This same information says that once you have applied TWP 1500 you can clean and re-apply, again no mention that you need to use a stripper. Again this information is off your web page. Please clarify.
Does not matter what brand of stain you are using, you always need to strip when switching brands. As for info stating this, it is readily available on our websites and in numerous locations:

Prep with the Gemini Restore Kit and stain with a darker color like the Dark Oak.
Hello,
I am tackling the task of staining and redoing my deck for the first time ever. I am not sure what type of wood the deck is unfortunately, or exactly how old it is. My guess is that the wood is probably around ten years old and it has not been stained before. Moss has been growing in some of the wood and it just looks terrible and feels terrible on your feet.
A contractor has come out to confirm that the deck is still safe to have people on (we often have friends over and we grill out on it regularly)and just needs some powerwashing to remove the moss. The area is small, it’s about 6×12 feet.
Do you have any tips or recommendations on how we should go about this project and whether a 1500 or 100 series is more appropriate? Any advice is appreciated!
1. New wood
2. Cypress (looks like its never seen sunlight)
3. Perfect wood condition. No sign of sun fading.
Rollback porch swing that has been well protected from the elements hanging under a massive shed at a nursery. I have heard horror stories of using the wrong prep, stain, and sealers for cypress wood. I really want a nice dark wood finish. This will hang on a small porch that only gets morning sunlight and will be well protected from weather from the west. Hoping you could suggest something to help make this swing perfect! Thanks!

You cannot go over existing stain and you cannot make it lighter without removing the existing stain first. Need to strip and or sand off the old stain first before using TWP.
