My deck is 1985 original P.T. pine and is amazingly in ok shape, some cracks but not quite ready to replace. 15 years ago I power washed and used Thompson’s which didn’t last more than a year. I have pressure washed again cleaning off much dark mildew this past weekend and the wood seems clean and ready for finish (TWP 1500 as I’m in NY). Do you recommend a cleaner before staining?
If the wood is clean from your current prep then you can go ahead and stain now.
We built a treated pine pergola last year and would like to now use TWP 1500 to stain it. Because it’s not a solid surface like a deck and is instead just a series of posts and beams, what would be the easiest way to apply the stain, meaning should we use a brush, rag, etc?
Deck is approx. 20 years old but in relatively good condition as I have treated it every year.
It is Douglas-fir, with a light treatment (i.e.it was not impregnated using needles, so isn’t as deep)
Wood has some weather cracks but no rot showing
It has been stained with semi-transparent Superdeck.
The deck is approx. 20×24
Start off by stripping of the Super Deck with the Restore A Deck Stripper and a pressure washing. Use the RAD Brightener when done to neutralize. Once the wood is prepped properly then you can apply two coats of the 1500 Series. Apply with wet on wet technique.

Spots? Do you mean old stain? If so then the Restore A Deck Stripper should be applied and power washing off. Apply the RAD brightener to all wood when done. Once the wood is prepped well you can then apply the TWP 1500 Series.
I have a 4 year old deck. It is pressure treated lumber (pine?). It was stained a litte over two years ago with Cabot semi-transparent. Does the old stain need to be completely stripped before applying TWP 1500. What is the best way to prepare the wood before restaining. Are there retail locations where TWP can be purchased.
Thank you.
Yes you have to remove the Cabot completely first. Use the Restore A Deck stripper and pressure wash off. Use the RAD brightener after the stripping. We are an online dealer that can ship to you.
The age of the house’s redwood wood is about 8 years. It’s been stained with semitransparent materials before.
Two sides it’s been hit by the sun and there’s another one shadowed and kind of moisturized, so it has so many kind of black points and spots.
I wonder what kind of material I should use as cleaner. What kind of stain I should apply.
And finally, is the TWP oil or water base?
You need to remove the current coatings first. Stripping usually works but varies on the brand that you are removing. TWP is oil based.

We live in CT and the deck will be part shade and part sun. I want to stain it, and want to either keep it as natural (not go orangy or yellow) but also like a bit of a gray color. What do you recommend. Your reviews are really nice compared to the Arbor Coat, which seem terrifyingly all over the place.
Maybe the clear and let it gray naturally. Please read this about new wood: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
i have a deck that was built in july 2011. it was stained in may 2013 using Olympic Maxim from Lowes, semi-transparent (cedar toned). the deck is made of PT pine. We are in Ohio. It is built around a pool, and is probably 50/50 shade and sun. The shaded areas were very moldy but the stain is fine and the sun area peeled and faded. The peeling area is closest to the pool. i did not know how to stain and some areas look pretty thick and other areas are fine. (I evenutally figured it out and the last sections looked better.) Anyway, i want to stain it again and wanted to use the TWP 1500 cedar. I have washed with deck wash and rinsed with a pressure washer. It is ready to go as far as im concerned. I am not interested in sanding or stripping. I also have a new pergola (two months old) and a few pieces of decking that were just replaed this week. Can I use this product and if not, do you have any suggestions?
You cannot apply TWP (or any other stain penetrating stain) over the Olympic without removing it first by sanding or stripping. Sorry but you have to prep correctly for the stain to work.

The floor cleaned up great. Do I need to strip the railings? Do I have to use a brightener? I plan on using Twp 1500 cedartone. You will need to remove all of the Sikkens where you plan on applying the 1500 Series. Yes the brightener is needed and very important.

Pressure treated wood is 8 years old. First used Sherman Williams semi-transparent then Benjamin Moore solid. Wood is great condition, no splinters but was peeling all over. Power washed, sanded with rental orbital sander. Still see some of the solid stain. What is the next step?
You cannot use TWP unless you remove all of the solid stain. Continue to sand until it is all removed. After that you should let the wood weather for a month then prep with the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep before applying the TWP.
Our deck is about 5 years old, when it was first done we stained with Sherwin Williams, after about 2 years we tried Cabot, which flaked off terribly. This year we have power washed as much as we could get off. We are looking to get something new that will work better and heard about TWP. We live in PA… Any suggestions for what to do with our deck?
You will need to start by removing all of the old stain first. Use the Restore A Deck stripper while pressure washing and then use the RAD Brightener. Once you have 95-100% removed you will be able to use the TWP 1500 Series.

We have used TWP series 100 exclusively last 10 years. We plan to use RAD stripper, brightener and then stain with TWP 1500 series. Would this be your recommendation?
Getting ready to stain a 6 month old cedar fence. The fence is 5200 sq. ft (inside and out) For 2 coats, I have calculated 5.2-5 gallon buckets are needed of TWP 1500 (live in IN). However, since this is a vertical surface – are two coats needed? The fence does not have a lot of shade. This fence has never been stained. It is a shadow-box fence (5.5 ft high) with 59 8ft panels. Going to use a power Graco Magnum Project Plus sprayer. Thanks!
Yes you should apply two light coats “wet on wet” for this. Fences are rough sawn wood and they really absorb the stain.

The deck is beautiful, but needs a top coat of cedartone (like I’ve done for every 2 years for the last 15 years). It has never been stripped because it never turned grey between coats of TWP101. Your previous answer leads me to believe the 1501 will not stick to the cleaned 101. Is that what you mean. If it will not stick I’ll go back to using 101 every 2 years. I’m trying to use the 1501 because its a better product and better advantages over 101. I just can’t justify stripping an already good looking deck. Explain why, or maybe we should talk on the phone. Your number and extension??
My previous answer said to use the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep. That is a cleaner kit, not a stripper. If you are happy with the 101 then stay with it.
