Dan, you need to remove all of the Sikkens of best results. You cannot put TWP on a different brand of stain and expect that it will be able to properly penetrate and adhere.

The wood we are looking to stain/coat is a front porch on a home built in June 2011.
We like the current natural cedar tone look, but it is starting to grey in spots where there is heavy traffic. (This is a porch to our front main door). We are located in Minnesota.
Any suggestions on Type of stain to use and how much of the old stain we need to remove? or can we just reapply TWP stain over the current stain?
Diana, the Thompsons will be very hard to remove since it was just installed and a water based acrylic. If you can get it off then you can use the TWP.
Sue, not sure on the Sikkens. It could be both. You can use the TWP 1500 for this.
i started to stain the arbor on my deck with Thompsons Water Sealer in cedar. I hate the color, too orange! The deck was installed last summer, pine pressure treated lumber. Can I remove the Thompsons, and then use your product?
Our garage doors peeled after the first year of staining. they are 7 years old, the product used was sikkens. was it applied improperly or the product itself?
any advice on using your product on these doors after they are stripped down?
Marc, use the 1500 after prepping properly with a deck stain stripper and wood brightener. About 5-6 gallons of the stain for the 2 coats.
Doug, SW is a fairly difficult stain to strip. Use the RAD Stain Stripper followed by the brightener. If needed sand the rest off. Once the wood is prepped then you are ready for the TWP. Future reapplication typically requires a deck cleaner for the prep as long as you do not let the stain go to full failure.
I have a large deck (approx 800 sq ft) that’s approx 18 yrs old. The decking boards are cedar and railings pressure treated lumber. Last year I stripped the deck using bleach and then power-washed. I then applied the Sherwin Williams acrylic semi-transparent stain. Not even a year later, it’s dull and has worn off in many places. I live in CT and would appreciate any tips as to which stain, stripper and methods that would allow me to strip the deck and put a new coat (or two) of TWP that will last me a couple of years. Also, for future re-applications, what should I use and how should I prep? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Deck is about 10 years old.
Not sure of wood type maybe pine or fir
Wood is in ok condition, some cracking.
Has been stained, not sure done by previous owner.
Deck is 22×20, need to stain rails too. Rails are a little over 3 feet.
I would like to know which product to use and if I need to use cleaner. Also how much stain do I need to order?
Thanks
Elliot, are you wanting to just stain the horizontals with the TWP? Make sure to remove all graying and old sealer if any remains for the prep then stain with the TWP in the 1500 Series.
Debbie, prep the wood with the Gemini Restore Kit then stain with the TWP 1500 Series.

deck with railing 12×12 area, stairs down cliff to water. we also need to treat a dock that was put in about 8 mths ago.
I am thinking that I want to do a medium range dark stain that will last about 3 years if possible, that would help cover imperfections and aging look of the deck. I was also considering painting the banister all around the deck and the lattice underneath white with paint, but I am not sure of that.
Age of wood? – 3 years
Type of wood? pressure treated pine
Condition of the wood? mediocre, faded, scratches, and starting to look poor which is why I am here.
Has it been stained previously and if so with what brand of stain? It was treated with Thompsons water seal on the 2nd summer, and was not treated last summer.
Small description of the area to be treated. 10′ x 20′ raised about 5′ off ground. Sunny during parts of the day. Has lattice underneath.
I would use a wood brightener to prep then the TWP 1500.
3 years
Cedar
Very good, recently stripped and sanded with 60 grit
Stained 3 years ago with Behr -completely removed by sanding
Do I need to use any whitening agent prior to staining with 1500?
Location: Pennsylvania -Do I need to use 1500 or can I use 100?
If the wood is free of all coatings and clean then you should be good to stain. I would look at the 1500 Series in one of the richer/darker colors.
Lanny, make sure to use a wood brightener after the stripping. Either series would work for you as long as you are in a state that allows it. if not then the 1500 is the way to go.
I completely stripped my deck. Should I treat it with something before applying the stain. Which is better for pine, 100 or 1500 and why?
1. 25 year old wood
2. tung in grove pine
3. good, weathered gray
4. not previously stained
5. 160 sq. ft. screened porch which gets occasional blown in rain
I plan to sand the floor before staining.
You cannot put TWP on top of another stain unless you strip that first. Once removed you should look at the 1500.
cepatter, prep with the Gemini Restore Kit first before applying a maintenance coat of TWP. This article explains better:

My deck currently has TWP 1501 that is about two years old.
What surface prep is required prior to recoating with TWP 1501.
1 years old deck
Pressure Treated
good
Bought pre-stain Pressure treated from Menards.
Deck…
Which TWP should I use,
TWP cannot be applied on top of the Behr. It will probably have adhesion issues.
I have a cedar deck that is two years old. Last year I treated it with BEHR natural cedartone which is now peeling everywhere. I am stripping the deck but some of the vertical posts the BEHR actually stuck. Is your 1501 Cedartone a good match for this? I will probably sand and a clean the posts and strip the deck completely.
Clean prep first with the Gemini Restore Kit then stain with the 1500.

Nora, strip and brighten the Messmers then apply 1 coat only of the TWP 1500.

area to be stained is about 500 sq ft of horizontal surface and about 300 sq ft of vertical surface
David, you must remove the Cabot first. The TWP is a stain and a sealer.
I have a white cedar deck that is about 8 years old. The condition of the wood is pretty good. We live in Michigan. My dilemma is that I’m staining the deck every year. For the past two years I’ve used Cabot stain. I’m interested in the 1500 series. Should I strip/treat the deck before staining, even if the colors are the same? What should I use if I want to change the color? Should I apply some type of sealer after the stain? Thanks
Cheryl, you would need to 100% remove th Behr if switching to TWP.
The deck is 12 years old, it is cedar wood, not to bad condition, besides the stain i have used constantly peels off every winter..I have used Behr Stain, semi transparent and solid and the same thing happens every spring, it peels and chips off.
I looked last year and there was a store in St. Paul, MN that carries this , i am looking for a store please advise.
If you sand then you should use a deck cleaner and wood brightener after to prep and remove any sand dust.
Either series would work fine.
I have an eight-year-old pressure-treated Yellowpine wood deck. It has been stained previously, and I’m uncertain whether it’s oil or water based. I’ve pressure washed the deck and most of the stain has been removed but there are areas where the stain is remaining. If I choose to sand the remaining stained areas will any other surface prep be required?
The deck is in partial shade and in the shaded areas I’ve had a problem with mildew the past. Would you recommend the TWP 1500 or 100 stain?
New wood should weather for 4+ months then cleaned and brightened before staining. Only 1 coat of stain on new wood.
Have a new sel dry TK WRC deck. Has not been stained. Build around Feb. 01, 2013. Would like to use TWP1501 cedar stain. Has been getting rain on and sun here on the Olympic Peninsula. Will do a light wash, but when to stain?
Prep with the Gemini Restore Kit first then stain with the TWP 1500 Series. Make sure to double your sq. footage if doing both sides of the fence.
Age of wood: 1 year
Type of wood: Cedar
Condition of wood: Good
Previous stain: No
Description: Fence 176 feet x 6 feet
Peg, you would need to make sure that the Wolman removed from the deck prior to applying the TWP. TWP 1515 Honeytone is the lightest color.
[s]Age of Wood: 20 years[/s]
Type of Wood: Pressure Treated
Condition of Wood: Good
Stained NO Sealed YES Wolmans every 2 years
Deck: Need oil base with minimal color, sort of like a natural wood look
Yes use the Restore to clean any dirt or grime then apply a light maintenance coat on top of the current stain. If the stain has not “thickened” from solvent evaporation then it should be okay.
Benny, you need to clean and prep the siding first. If the TWP is able to penetrate into the wood then you should be good to go.
Stained a 8-month old deck last string with twp 1500. I want to recoat this spring.
Do I just use restore-a-deck again, and then apply more twp 1500 over deck?
Also, have some left over in 5 gallon drum. Can I just get a couple more gallons in mixed with last years left over.
The wood is a pine log siding, about 3 years old. It has been stained with cabbot clear stain. The condition is good but heard about your product and would like to use it. Is it ok to use over the clear stain. I want to use your cedar color. Have used your test samplers and worked good.
Tks Waiting for your reply Benny
Yes you would need to remove the Behr first before applying the TWP. Behr is very difficult to remove. Strip it with the RAD stripper then sand any remnants. Make sure to use the RAD Brightener as well.
