i am seeing color stains for both the 1500 and 100 series stains. DO you have a clear coat in both ?
Yes, clear is an option in the drop-down color choices for each size and series.
What is the best product to use on a new cypress pergula?
See this for tips on new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Either the 100 or 1500 based on what your state allows.
I live in Minnesota, had my fence cedar fence installed November 2018. It is now almost May 2019 and the snow is finally gone. Do I need to prep my fence before staining? Also, according to your calculations, do I need 30 gallons? 250′ by 6ft.
Yes on prep. About 25-30 gallons for the two coats applied wet on wet.
Rough sawn pine or cedar (not sure) less than 10 years old.
Previously stained with TWP cedar tone, and would like to re-coat with the same.

And is the TWP 200 series going to do a good job? Ann McLeod
Yes, works great!
9 years old. Preserved spruce. Wood has shrunk quite a bit – I think the preservative had not completely dried when we purchased the wood – but it good shape. Some cupping. Has not been stained. Covered deck except on edges it has got rain and snow. I want to freshen the look as it is quite grey and preserve what I have. What product is best and do I need to do the wood brightener before the stain? And finally, can I buy in Canada (northern Alberta) and if so, where or do I order directly from you?
Only the TWP 200 Series is allowed in Canada: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
There are no dealers for TWP in Canada but we can ship directly from this website to you. You will need to prep with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I own a “log-look” pine home that is in desperate need of re-staining. I have used your 1500 product, using the wet on wet method, on my deck. I am told that my homes vertical surfaces would only require a single coat. Keeping in mind that the southern exposure surfaces are in the worst shape while the surfaces under cover are in relatively good shape, do you concur with the contractor’s recommendation of 1 coat or do you recommend two “wet-on-wet” coats? Thanks.
2 coats applied wet on wet is best.
We have a 15 year old pressure treated lumber deck that we stain every other year. In the summer of 2017, we applied the TWP 1500 (Dark Oak) stain with success. We’d like to stain it again this spring (2019), and wondered if it is ok to apply the new stain over the old stain after pressure washing it?
Use this kit while pressure washing for the prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
That will prep correctly for reapplication.
We are planning to clean, brighten and stain the Cedar deck this Spring which was installed July 2018 in Pennsylvania. Do we use the pressure washer to clean the deck and how is the Brightener applied to the deck? Will the products do anything to the iron black rails?
For prep, you need the Cleaner and the Brightener kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Use the kit while pressure washing. Test the black rails first. Typically no issues but there are many different brands out there and they are not all made the same.
I’m building a house in north Georgia using exterior pine board and batten. What product is best for a new build that will last 7-8 years before having to restain?
Look at the TWP 1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
I’m waiting to apply TWP 1500 to my new pressure treated deck. Is there a similar TWP product that reduces a slip/fall risk?
Jon

TWP 1500 is a penetrating stain. It does not create a film on top of the wood that would make the wood slippery.
I am restaining my deck stairs and landings (uncovered with mid to late afternoon sun) and my front porch deck (covered with morning to mid afternoon sun). I live in the lowcountry of Charleston with marshland nearby. The existing stain (6 sixs old) I suspect to be an oil based Sherwin Williams deck stain product. When I used a rag soaked with denatured alcohol on a portion of the stain, some of the stain came off on the rag, but not much. Oil based, right? Would the 1500 be something I can use in these circumstances? If so, please fill me in on any specific things my contractor needs to do. THANK YOU!
Hello, you must remove the current coating when switching brands of stain. The TWP cannot be applied over this. Please post a picture so we can determine the proper way to remove.
I prepped and coated new cedar porch columns in TWP1501 Cedar and now want a darker finish like walnut – how best to proceed? Do I need to sand them down and/or wait for a few months? As an option is it possible to paint over with oil based paint? Thanks Shannon
You cannot paint over with a paint. Can you post a picture?
Thanks for the quick reply – attached are my photos – I just finished these yesterday and its colder here in Chicago (40-55 temps) so the stain is also a little damp even though I back brushed with a dry foam brush. Would it be possible to re-apply TWP darker stain in spring/summer?
Yes, wait until Spring. Light wash and then try the Dark Oak or Black Walnut colors.
I have a new clear heart redwood deck. It was installed 6 months ago and is ready for staining. It was cleaned with a pressure washer but required some sanding and scrubbing in small areas where there were stains or paint spray codes from the mill. These areas are somewhat lighter in color. Will the TWP 1500 stain differently in the lighter areas? If so is there a way to make the final finish uniformed in color? I live in the San Francisco Bay area. Is there local dealer who carries your products?
Thanks Dennis
Yes, it will stain lighter in the sanded areas. You will need to let the wood weather for a few additional months to even the grain out and fix this. Prep with the Gemini Restore Kit after: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
We are an online dealer for TWP only.
I have a pressure treated spruce perminant post dock I installed 4 months ago. I applied a coat of Olympic water seal/ UV protection. The dock sees a lot of sun/UV exposure in the summer and harsh damp winters. What product is recommended to seal and protect the dock and can I apply it over the Olympic? Thanks
You will need to remove the Olympic first with this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Once removed, apply 1 coat of the TWP 1500 Series.
I have a 40 year old home with clear cedar vertical siding. It has been power washed and coated with clear FLOOD CWF. It needs a new coat as the last application was over 4 years ago. Is TWP 1500 the proper product for this wood and does it come in clear coat? I live in West Virginia. Thank you for any information you can provide.
Hello,
The TWP cannot be applied over the Flood. That would have to removed first. Once removed you can use the TWP.
I want to stain an interior wall thinking of user guide clear 1500 on cedar will this work do I have to wait
You can use it.
Which product is better? 100 or 1500?
They are both excellent without one being better than the other.
How soon can I stain a new kiln dried pine wood barn? And how much do I need for a 28 x 18 barn and how do I prep the wood? I live in North Central PA. Thinking about purchasing the 1500 series.
See this for tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/kdat-and-twp-wait-period-for-new-wood/
We would need a total sq footage of all the sides to help with the amount needed.
I just stained my deck with TWP 1500, rustic color. The rails are quite old, and the floor is a few years old. I cleaned and brightened everything well with Deck Restore before staining. The rails came out a warm brown, the floor is definitely reddish. Why two colors? If I put another coat on the rails, will it help the color match?
Color will vary based on wood age and type. Another coat should help.
1. 3-4 years, 2. Western red cedar, 3. Good to excellent 4. Stained with penefin (spelling) at time of install 5. Two areas: a) porch covered by deck above, still open to weather, gets morning sun; b) small deck with attached ramp handicap accessible, open to weather, gets afternoon sun. Located on coast of Maine.
Within a year to year and a half was not happy with wear of penefin. Did a gentle wash with household soap and water on porch a. Retained some repelling factors, but still dirty and losing color with some darkening. Just cleaned both areas with Mold Armor E-Z deck, fence, and patio cleaner. After rinsing with power washer, brushed with corn broom which helped remove stubborn dirt, but also removed what I believe to be remains of stain (it was gummy).
Will it be okay to proceed with TWP 1500? I want to prevent graying and still see grain and color of the natural wood.
You are good with the prep to proceed with the TWP 1500 Series.
I re-applied some TWP 1500 last summer. I recently powerwashed my deck and it appears that much of the stain has been removed. I have attached some pictures of the before and after and how the wood looks now. I suspect that I may have overapplied the stain last year and this contributed to the stain not properly penetrating and washing away. However, water still does seem to bead up even after the powerwashing. How should I properly prep it in order to stain it again? Am I OK just to clean and brighten before staining again? Do I need to do anything else to ensure that the stain properly penetrates the wood besides not to overapply?
It would be best to use the Restore A Deck Stripper and Brightener kit so you start will clean and unstained wood.
OK – if you think that is the best option I may go ahead and do that. Do you think the issue was overapplying it last year? Maybe I should not have powerwashed it and just used the cleaner and scrubbed it with a brush before applying a maintenance coat?
Probably was due to over application and the way you prepped. Easy to remove though and start over.

Use the TWP 1500 after the wait and prep.
Can you please help me to determine the amount of 1500 I need for my fence. I have 170′ @ 6′ tall and 250′ @ 5′ tall. All the pickets are approx 2 3/4″ apart, if that is even taken into account. Thanks for your help.
Total sq footage for doing both sides of both fences is 4500. If you are spraying the first coat and back wiping the second with a brush/stain pad, you would need about 7-10 of the 5-gallon pails for the 2 coats.
I have a covered post and bean cabana attached to my pool house. I have used TWP on the exposed beams, wood trim, and cedar shakes with great results. I have now installed an exotic wood slab bar top between the cabana and pool house. Are any of the TWP products suitable for sealing the bar top? It is totally covered and will not be rained on, but will obviously receive some water from drink cups and wet arms. The bar is exposed to 1.5 hours of sunlight in the early morning. I prefer a natural finish as opposed to a colored finish due to the color and character in the slab.
Try the TWP in the “Clear” for this.
We put on our first coat of “1520” 9 months after deck was installed and put on a second coat a year after that. Looked great after first and second coats. Now another year has passed and we’re experiencing black markings; probably due to large oak trees covering the deck. We’d like to clean and add another layer of the same stain (love the look and color) and would like to know the best way to clean prior to restraining. Oh, not sure if you need to know but we are located in South Central PA. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Could you post a picture of the black stains from the trees?
Pictures you requested
Yep, looks like dirt from the trees have embedded into the stain somewhat. Best prep would be the Stripper/Brightener Kit. It will be very easy to prep with this and give you the best uniform appearance for your new coat: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Considering TWP 1500 for a horizontal cedar fence. Two questions:
1) Cedar fence boards are ‘green’. Can I stain with TWP 1500 on ‘green’ boards, or should I wait for them to dry first?
2) Can TWP 1500 be applied over structural pressure treated posts and rails?
1. New wood? See this for tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
2. Yes.
I am a wood sculptor. I am making a traditional totem that will get many different color stains and oil based paints. Can I use a basecoat of TWP 1500 and stain/paint over that? (Top coat will be marine spar varnish for uv protection.)
Sorry but no, TWP is not designed to be top coated.
does it have to be applied to the underside of deck? Does it have to be sanded off to remove the finish?
Just clean and recoat when reapplying. No need to stain the undersides.
Hello,
I have bought a log cabin with an addition wrapped with cedar siding and the home is in desperate need of stain.Property is located in Northern Ozarks, no rot but have spent money for a soft wash which actually removed a lot of dirt and all mold and mildew. Back side of the home is exposed to the sun an average of 6 hours per day. No idea what was used on the wood but very little remains. What do you recommend? looking for a brown/red tone but not too dark. Cedartone? Any advise appreciated.
Picture please to make sure the prep was done correctly.
As for the stain, use the TWP 100 Series. Maybe the Pecan 120.
These photos are a representation of the worst areas. Thank you for your help!
You will need to strip/remove all the old stain first before using the TWP.
Hello, We are currently replacing our deck with new knotty cedar. How long after the deck is installed should we wait to put on the TWP? Should we used the TWP 1500 or TWP 100 series?
See this about new decks: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 100 Series if allowed in your state, if not, use the 1500 Series.
I painted my cedar fence 2 years ago with thompsons, can I use twp 1500?
You will need to remove Thompsons first. Was it the water seal or the stain?
I’m sure I used the water seal, with a stain in it.
You will need to strip this off.
How often should you stain a fence with your 1500 series I just stand this year and was curious how often I should stand it again
For a fence, every 3-5 years or as needed.
Doug Fir dutch lap siding 100+ years old, previously treated with shingle oil about 5 or more years ago. I am going to apply 1520 Pecan. Will the RAD stripper / brightener treatment be adequate? I used this process on another 100 plus year home with 1500 dark oak and it worked excellent. Not sure the other home had shingle oil applied previously though.
Please post a picture.
The house on the left needs stain. The one on the left was done last year
No pictures were added.
The file was too big for your server I think. This pic resized. The house on the right is finished, the one on the left needs done.
Yes the RAD Stripper/Brightener is correct.
Thanks
New Doug fir deck. Built in April. Planning to clean/brighten, then stain in July. Temps are in 90s in July and deck is in full sun. Do you advise I wait until temps cool in Sept to do this job? Also, how well does Doug fir accept twp color?
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Fall would be better. As for color on your wood, best to try a sample or two:
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
I just stained my covered deck with TWP cedartone. The main structure is Douglas Fir with the roof being Pine and the deck Cedar. The Douglas Fir is rough cut so soaked it up. Pine took long time to dry but it was the roof so didn’t matter. Very happy with results. Worth the 3.5 hr drive one way across border to purchase.
It is so hard to plan when to stain. Overcast is best with no rain in forecast for a few days and then time to do it.
We have just completed a new wood dock. We have used pressure treated wood in a light sienna brown colour. Do you recommend this for a dock? Summers here in the interior of BC are dry and get into the 90’s F, and up to -15 F in the winter.
How well will the TWP1500 work here?
How long do you recommend the treated wood cure before staining it?
You have announced selling 1500 in Canada this year. Are you shipping it now?
Thank you.
Hello, TWP 1500 is not allowed in Canada but the TWP 200 Series is. We can ship the TWP 200 Series directly to you.

It works very well in your climate.
I’m installing a cedar fence. I want to keep the natural color and not let it gray. Read that I should wait a period of time before staining. However, I’m concerned it will gray during that time. How long do I need to wait and avoid graying? Also, in 1500 is there a clear stain. I don’t want to color the natural wood.
Thanks
RP
No color (clear) means you will not have any UV protection and the wood will gray in months. You must have tint in your stain if you want to prevent graying. What you want to do is not possible.
Ok. How about length of time to wait before staining? Won’t it gray while I wait. Thanks
Yes but you will have to prep and that removes any graying. It is part of the process for new wood.
New deck built last summer. Think it’s pretty standard treated wood. What is the best way to stain for the very first time?
Prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
And then apply one coat of the TWP 1500 when staining new wood.
Thank you!
I live on Long Island, NY. Installed a pressure treated pool deck last summer and I am now ready to stain. I do not want to restrain the wood every year due to chipping and pealing problems. What stain do you recommend?
Hi Dawn, TWP is a penetrating stain so it will not chip or peel. Prep with the Gemini Restore Kit and stain with the TWP 1500 Series for NY.
Pressure treated deck in maine off the back slider is 32 years old, approximately 500 sq ft. Its been pressure washed “periodically”, last time was probably 4 or 5 years ago. I’ve used a clear Cabot stain in the past. Never been painted or had a tint put in it. I’ll try a semitransparent stain (natural) if it will grey out over time. I don’t want to clean and stain the deck every other year. So, clean, brighten 1500 stain or strip, brighten 1500 stain? Please tell me why one over the other. Thanks.
Strip, brighten, and stain is the best option.
I’m prepping and staining my house and will wash and stain the deck when I’m done. I’ve hit a few boards of the old pressure treated deck with the TSP/bleach mix I use to clean my house and hit it with the pressure washer. Cleans up well. Why should I use the strip/brighten prep you sell/recommend? What’s the active ingredient that makes it worth the money? Convince me!!
You cannot apply the TWP over the Cabot and the bleach/TSP mix is not a stripper and will not properly prep down to the bare wood.
Deck has not been pressure washed in 4/5 years. Should I get the bulk of the dirt and mildew off first? Then apply the stripper? Then apply the brighter? Then apply stain? thanks
Just rinse first and then apply stripper. Pressure wash off. Apply the brightener when done and rinse this after 15 minutes. Let dry for 48 hours before staining.
Past summer stained my garage with 50/50 mix of cedartone 1500 and redwood 1500. How closely wood rustic match to this combo
Not very close.
I don’t know which stain to use…the 100 series or the 1500 series. Answers to the questions:
1. 20+ years
2. Redwood
3. Good. I just sanded the entire floor.
4. Yes. With TWP1501 CedarTone.
5. Live in CO and deck faces west and gets beat up with direct sun. Very little shaded area. Also, am wondering if you can mix 100 and 1500. i still have some of the 1501 left, but don’t think I have enough to finish it.
You cannot mix the two. Best to use the 1500 again.
I live in South Surrey, BC close to the Washington State Border. I have a five year old pressure treated deck. It was stained with SuperDeck, pressure treated natural semi transparent deck stain in 2014, and again, with same product in 2016. This year we have washed and cleaned the deck wi a TSP and bleach solution in preparation for staining this year. From research it reads like TWP is a superior product to SuperDeck. The wood is in good shape, and with the cleaning the grey look is gone and wood looks generally straw coloured, with some ares that show some gray mottling.
To use TWP product would we need to clean the deck with your deck cleaning product? We were planning on doing a second TSP/bleach wash before applying SuperDeck, but as your product reads to be superior, would use TWP.
Where can TWP be purchased in or close to Bellingham, Wa? Thank you
ian
Please post a picture. We ship from our website to your area.
Thank you for the quick reply. Here are some photos of the deck with close ups to show wood condition.
Looks good to stain.
Do you need to apply a clear coat of something on top of the TWP 1500 stain? For water-resistance? We have a cedar fence that we installed last fall and are getting ready to stain it with TWP 1500 pecan tone. Once we are finished with staining, do we need to apply anything on top to protect the wood?
No. You cannot apply a clear sealer on top of a deck stain. No need either.
I stained my new deck and fence with Sikkens Deck a stain in Cedartone 2 years ago. The Sikkens faded, so I restrained the fence with TWP 1500, also in Cedartone, and it looks great. In preparation for staining the deck, I was reading some of your comments, and you started that you can’t stain over Sikkens with TWP! What will the result be on my fence and what do I need to do to prepare to restrain the deck with TWP 1500? Robert Bateman
Strip and brighten for the prep on the deck to remove the Sikkens. As for the fence, hard to say but if the Sikkens hindered the TWP from soaking in correctly, you could have drying issues and premature failure. Good news is there is less of a chance of having issues on vertical wood like a fence.
I have a 20 year old log cabin that was last sealed in 2005 in Eastern PA California Red TWP511 was used. It is not real bad shape couple spots are graying but not many? (see picture)
I will be using TWP1511 to go over log cabin. Can I just pressure wash and stain or do I need to strip first?
You should be okay with just cleaning for the prep on this cabin
Can I use this in composite deck?
No, you cannot.
Has anyone just used the Clear? My wife likes the natural look of our pressure treated deck with our black railings. Is there any downfall outside of UV protection to the clear?
Hi Jeff, the Clear has no tint and that means no UV protection from graying. The wood will gray naturally.
