I have a 20+ year-old cedar deck on Long Island, NY. Every season, I usually apply a deck cleaner and power wash the deck before restaining. This year, however, I am going to have the deck sanded by a floor sanding professional. What is the lag time and prep steps between the sanding and my applying the stain? I will be brushing in TWP 1500 Series Honeytone (1515). Thanks!

After sanding (do not sand finer than 60-80 grit) you should do the final prep to open up the pores with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit

I have an eighteen-year-old clear cedar deck here in Wisconsin. It’s still in excellent condition. Been using the Proluxe (Sikkens), SRD, oil base, cedar tone, one coat Semi-Transparent Matte Finish stain over the years but would like to try one of the TWP products. What would you recommend – the 100 or the 1500 series?

Clear will not offer UV protection from graying. It must be tinted. As for which stain, that would depend on where you live?

10 years old. Treated pine?. Covered section perfect, uncovered a little dry but smooth, no splinters when running hands over it. Previously stained with ValsparOne-Coat
Semi-Transparent Stain & Sealer, rustic color. The deck was power washed by a professional, and he messed it up. Too much pressure in quite a few spots, and you can see the trail of the spray pattern. It needs re-staining

Yes. you always have to emove a previous coating when switching brands of semi-transparent stains. We would need to see the pictures to see if it can be stripped or if sanding will be needed.

TWP is an exterior based stain. While you can use it indoors, it will have a strong odor as it is oil-based that may take days to dissipate when used indoors. You would want the 100 or 1500 Series based on what your state allows. As for a stripper, you can use this for exterior use but not interior: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail

I finished using your stripper product on a 1/2 log and 1/2 cedar home last fall as winter set in and didn’t get further. My question is, can I now use the brightener and begin staining or do I need additional prep? Also as I was stripping with 2000 psi the wood now has a light “fuzz” look and feel to the touch. If I apply your stain with an airless sprayer and back brush will it dry smooth or do I need to do something else. I want the best product you offer in a mid range brown finish with “some” shine so what is your recommendation for approximately 6000 sq ft of coverage. Thank you.

Reply to  JEFF

To finish you should use the Gemini Cleaner with pressure washing and then the Brightener. Washing again will help to remove some of the fuzz. TWP does not come in a shine of any level. It is a penetrating matte stain with no shine. Look at the TWP 1500 Series. Pecan or Dark Oak.

I am installing new cedar shingles, for siding on new construction. I want to use the clear, so the natural cedar will show. Which is better 200 or 1500 and why? Will one prevent graying more or last longer than the other? Also, would adding 1 gallon of color stain to 5 gallons of clear help much with the UV protection?

TWP Stains Authorized Dealer
Admin

Reply to  Michael

Clear will not offer any UV protection. It must be tinted to protect from graying.
Adding a tinted color into the clear will only add a very small amount of UV protection. Your best option is to pick a tinted color and do not thin it with the clear. Honeytone is the lightest tint in the 1500 Series and the Cedar Gold is the lightest in the 200 Series.

You can use either series for this. You can order samples here: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples

Hello! We need to reseal/re-oil our tigerwood deck, which was installed in March 2019. Unfortunately, the installers for the deck did an *awful* job staining it (among other things), so we’ll need to fix it. Images attached.

While the deck is pretty new, we’re thinking we’ll have to go with the TWP 1500 Series Stain and Gemini Restore A Deck Kit Combo Pack to clean everything up, brighten it and then stain it (again).

We’re also thinking 1502 Redwood is best for matching the wood’s current color; using this stain won’t detract from the color of our current deck, will it?

Are we on the right track with what we’re looking to buy and the color? Thanks for any insight.

We have 5-6 year old deck, made of pressure-treated lumber and which has been stained twice since construction, once at about 6 months, and the second time 2-3 years ago. Both times we’ve bought a top-of-the-line semi-transparent water-soluble stain in a redwood/cedar color, and cannot believe that we need to stain the deck AGAIN after such a short interval. The boards in particular no longer exhibit the protective qualities of the stain, and have uneven coloration. I believe last time we used Cabot, at the dealer’s recommendation, and we always prepare the wood and apply the stain according the manufacturer’s instructions.

We plan to clean the deck with a pressure-washer tomorrow, and to do the staining early next week. We prefer a water-based semi-transparent stain, again in a redwood/cedar color. What cleaner and stain should we get, and where do we get them from? We live in Long Island, New York (ZIP 11776).

Hello, we offer TWP only in oil-based stains. Just a couple of FYIs, when switching brands, you should strip and brighten to remove the current stain. Also, no stain on the market will last more than 2-3 years. This is normal to redo at that time.

My neighborhood group is power washing and using 1500 on pressure treated pine porch wood that is 2.5 – 3.5 years old and has been treated once 2 years ago with 2 coats of SW water based clear stain. There are door mat and other soil/damage variables, such as shown in these pictures.
We are finding that overall powerwashing is not creating a completely uniform surface and the Honeytone 1515 color is not covering the problem areas and is coming out considerably darker than shown on your website.

What preparation steps to you recommend for the wood pictured here? This is a door mat stain along with black charcoal like substance that dirtied the wood from the underside of disintegrating rusty metal deck chairs.

Would Oxiclean work as a prestep to powerwashing?
