Can TWP be used on composite decking?
No, but the semi-solid colors can:

I have a large two year old cedar deck. I just had it power washed in preparation for a new coat of stain. I used Sherwin-Williams top-of-the-line deck stain the first time around, and it did not hold up well. The deck gets full sun all day in St. Louis, and snow and ice in the winter. Here are my questions: 1. what color of stain in your 1500 series looks the most like natural cedar?
2. I have heard that tinted stain lasts longer than clear stain. True or false? If true, then question 1 applies. If false, then a clear stain is adequate for maintaining the cedar color, right?3. How many days of no rain do I need before and after applying the 1500?
Thank you!
1. Honeytone is the lightest color.
2. It must be tinted for UV protection. Clear will gray naturally.
3. 48 hours after prep and no rain for 12 hours after applying.
I live in northern Ohio. My deck is 336 sq. ft. and I installed the surface in the summer of 2022 with 5/4 treated pine. Couple of questions: Will power washing the surface followed by a light sanding be enough surface prep to apply 1500 stain? If I buy a 5 gallon can, can I use the other half in a few years to touch up or recoat?
See here about prep and new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Opened containers will not last more than 12 months.
I have pressure treated lawn furniture that was previously stained with 1500 some years ago. I would like to restrain. What type of preparation would I need?
Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Coastal VA. Large deck that is 4 yrs old and was stained initially with Benjamin Moore arborcoat translucent which has been terrible and we want to remove. Have a year old fence next to it that’s never been treated. Not sure what to prep these each with and if we apply TWP 1500 series in one of the natural / cedar tones it would look ok and roughly match. Both are pressure treated wood. Both are huge and the deck is one story tall on one end- a ton of surface area, so ease and speed of application and spray options would be ideal
Strip and brighten the deck. Use both stripper additives with the RAD Stain stripper.
https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives
For the fence, use the Gemini Restore Kit which is a Cleaner and Brightener. Stain with the TWP 1500 Series when done.
Northern WI. Over water dock. Pressure treated pine 3 yr old. Very good condition. Never been treated. Slight graying. Direct sun from noon on. Boathouse blocks sun north and east side causing some mildew issues.
Looking at semi Trans RAD or 1500 honey color, or other recommendations.
Prep with the Gemini Restore Kit and stain with the TWP 100 Series.
Which product should I use to stain my cedar shake roof?
TWP 200 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
Can uv protection product be added to any twp stain?
All the TWP colors already contain UV protection. You cannot add more.
I used the TWP 1500 Series Stain Color Dark Oak 1503 on my deck & dock this year (2022). I did the wet on wet coat. Next year can I just do a light power wash and install one coat to refresh? The wood really soaked in the stain.
Thanks
Yes.
Thank you. Can I use a pump-up sprayer to coat it?
Yes, you can.
I am about to build a covered porch using cypress wood decking. Do you have any photos of your products used on cypress deck boards?
Colors vary drastically based on wood type, age, and prep. Best to test samples to see how it will look on your wood: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
temperature
50-90.
I did an addition to my barn. The older part was coated with TWP Cedartone. I am assuming if I coat the new part, it probably won’t match because of age, 5 yr/old. If I coat the whole thing with dark walnut, will it cover the old stain and match?
No. It is not possible to get old wood and new wood to match with any semi-transparent color. The new wood will always stain lighter as it is less absorbent.
what is the shelf life of the 1500 semi transparent stain
https://twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
thanks!
Is the finish of TWP 1504 Black walnut matte, satin, or semigloss? We have a new cedar fence and was not seeking any gloss. Thank you
TWP Stains are not shiny.
When applying the 1500 does it have a Temperature regulation that you must apply to
Not less than 50 f.
this is the 2nd time in 3 years I have stained my dock with TWP 1500. Used the cleaner and brightner and stain. My dock boards stayed tacky last time for a week and half, this time starting out the same way. Is it normal to be tacky
No, and that typically happens from over applying or a build up through the years. Next time you might want to strip/brighten for prep.
That was done prior to both times. Love the product it lasted 2 years after finally drying. Just don’t think it should take that long
Cleaning is not the same as stripping. When you strip you are down to the bare wood.
How many sq ft will I get per gallon on new cedar house?
See this first.
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
coverage varies on wood type.
I used Thompson clear sealer two yrs ago on my deck. Do I need to strip that first. If so – what product do you recommend for stripping it? Also my deck needs power washed too before I stain it. How many days should I wait after power washing to stain? Thanks so much.
Strip and brighen for prep. use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
You pressure wash while using the kit. Stain 48 hours later.
Can I use TWP 1500 stain on teak outdoor furniture? The furniture has been left unstained. I usually clean it every year to remove the gray aging look. But I have 2 unopened gallons of 1500 and would like to use it.
Yes but only one coat. Do not over apply.
Do you advise putting a clear polyurethane over it? I have been told that stain can rub off and get in clothing.
You cannot apply a poly over the TWP.
I used TWP 1501 3 years ago on my new cedar fence. The color has faded. I am about ready to restrain . How long should this second coat last?
3-4 years on a fence is normal.
What color would be closest to clear but offer UV protection? I want the most natural color for ceiling of a screen porch, that is tongue and groove pine
Honeytone 1515 is the lightest tint.
Thanks. Am I correct clear does not have any UV protection? The outside of the porch will be Cedar color. Inside vertical and horizontal and “screen Window” surrounds and ceiling need protection. I would like maintain the look of untreated, but protect from Uv and graying. The floor is composite. Any best suggestions?
Clear has no tint and that means no UV protection. Any color that is tinted will work.
Thank you, Do you suggest mixing 50:50 Honeytone and clear?
That would lower your UV protection by 50%.
Staining pine boards on my shop. 50 ft wide and 25 feet high. Previously stained with 1500 two dark stain. 13 yrs ago.
Going to have the shop washed and restrained in the near future.
Suggestions on volume of stain. And I need a supplier near buffalo NY.
We sell online only: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
We would need total sq footage of wood to be stained.
Sq ft is 1250, original color was dark oak. How much do I need of the 1500 series
For two coats about 10-13 gallons.
Can TWP 1500 clear get tinted? If so what tint system is compatible? We were applying TWP1500 clear on some post and beams per clients specs, but now they decided they want some tint. They want more of a cedar tone stain but now we have several gallons of the TWP1500 clear that are left and are wondering if we can tint it? Thank you
You cannot tint the clear. You can add another color of the same series to the clear to mix.
Also can u tell what kind of wood our deck is … I do not know. We are still in the process of stripping lower floor
You have pressure-treated pine.
Sorry … we were told to use 1500 series here in Ohio
Is Pecan color have orange in it? Or is it more brown? Also is the dark oak very dark? Can we still see the grain when dry will it be more brown than black ? We cannot decide which is best for our 2 tier older 40 yr old deck. Thanks !
That depends on your wood itself as colors will vary based on the wood type and age of the wood.
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1520-pecan
I have a new coat of TWP 1500 Pecan color on new never painted pressure treated deck wood. How can I remove some or all of the stain from the wood?
Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Another question here in Ohio. I found out about TWP and wan to use your stain. I did not use your cleaning or brighter. If I use the pecan 1520 will it still adhere the same. I’m deck is totally prepared for stain by educating myself how to do it. I just want to make sure ur stain will work when I’ve not used ur cleaning stripping brighting products ???
thanks ! Mark
It will work as long as you prepped properly.
I have a 12′ x 16′ treated lumber deck (25 years old) with a roof over it. Have used Sherwin Williams stain throughout past 25 years. Last treated with Sherwin Williams Wood Scapes Semi Transparent Stain about 3 years ago. For the most part it has held up well. Only exception is outer three floor boards that is mildly flaking/fading and appears that new stain will not be absorbed. The remainder of the wood flooring is in excellent condition. I have vinyl railing/posts/spindles surrounding the deck. Deck gets all of the afternoon sun as well as rain/snow/ice on outer three-four floor boards as well. Live about 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, PA where the weather can get nasty including a rather lengthy and prolonged winter. Hindsight being 20-20, I should have replaced the flooring with Trex or cement when I had the roof installed six years ago. At 71, I prefer less maintenance rather than more.
Would like to use your TWP 1500 Combo Kit currently listed at $290. Is this kit appropriate? Do I need to strip the entire deck for the TWP 1500 to fully penetrate and protect? Any other advice would be appreciated. Is there a remote chance or possibility that you know or are aware of a contractor that perhaps uses your product that would be interested in this back breaking project. One never knows until this type of question is asked. Despite being old and beat up, I do believe in miracles!
You have to strip and or sand to remove the SW. Post some pics for prep help. Sorry, but we do not know of any contractors in your area.
Hi, Is the 1500 Natural essentially clear? I’m having a screened porch redone. Cedar or Pecan on the outside and I want a clear for the inside and ceiling to preserve the natural cedar and pine ceiling look. Does your product have a flat natural finish or does it add sheen? Porch was previously done with Cabot. Do you have a contractor list in zip code 44139?
the TWP 1530 Natural is not clear but tinted. The TWP 1500 is Clear but offers no UV protection from graying. No shine to it. You would have to remove the Cabot first before using TWP Stains.
We do not have contractor lists.
Thank you. Do you suggest mixing Natural and Clear? I would want UV protection but as light as possible.
You can mix them if you like. Honeytone is lighter than Natural.
I getting ready to re stain my log home. It was originally stain TWP 100 pecan 8 years ago and because of the VOC requirements in New Hampshire I have order and received TMP 1500 and Gemini cleaner and brighter. The south gable end has weather faded which prompted my re staining. The other 3 sides have held up well compared to the south. I have planned to restrain all 4 sides. My question is will the new stain on the 3 sides will adhere adequately?
As long as you use the prep kit and pressure wash, it will be fine.
I have a 3 year old deck (standard pine) in Knoxville, TN originally stained with the Behr semi-transparent stain. Poor choice. It’s time to strip and re-stain this fall. What is your best quality (i.e., most durable) semi-transparent product that’s allowable in Knoxville?
The TWP 1500 Series.
New treated wood deck that is 4 months old. It is 12×16 ft. What do you recommend? We live in Ohio-and it gets sun half the day.
See for tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 1500 Series.
Hello, – I have an old (25 yo) deck of pressure-treated wood to which I applied TWP 1502 3 years ago. I was told back then that the stain was expected to last up to 3 yrs on horizontal surfaces and 5 yrs of vertical. The result of application was good and it still looks good, but water-repelling is significantly reduced, close to nothing, on horizonal surfaces. My vague recollection is that it is possible to apply a light recoating layer in an attempt to get a few more years out of it. Is that correct? Thanks.
When reapplying you always have to prep. Use the Gemini Restore Kit when prepping.

Hello, what’s your best guess on matching this color?
Need to seal a 1 1/2 year old ACQ privacy fence, I still need to water blast.
thank you for your time
Probably 1520 Pecan.
Is TWP #511 the same as TWP #1511? I believe I used #511 a few years back and need to restain my deck but wasn’t sure. Please advise.
The 511 was discontinued 10+ years ago and replaced with the 1511. Same color.
used valspar clear sealer 3 years ago on new wood deck can i apply twp 1500 over that
No, the Valspar has to be removed no matter what. Post some pics for prep help.

Greetings…I built a deck with pressure treated wood about 19 years ago and it’s in good shape after cleaning and staining every 3 years. However, I skipped treatments for about 4 years and will clean/ pressure treat this spring. The deck is in full sun most of the day here in RI. Either clear or semi…which of your stains hold up best from all the types you sell?
For RI, you will need the TWP 1500 Series. Make sure to prep well. Send pics if you want help with the prep.
Do you have any customer photos of decks treated with the Semi-solid “Hunting Lodge” color?
We do not.
Thanks. I’m asking because, on the color sheet, it seems to look kind of pink when in direct sunlight. If I use it, I’ll send you a photo. I think an album of customer photos would be helpful.
You can test samples if you like: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
I saw that but at and thought to try Earth, Appalachian Trail, and Hunting Lodge but at $10.00/sample I have reservations about it. I know it seems silly when I will be buying 2+ kits but I’m rather frugal (read stingy) LOL

I have an old composite deck (2005) that has never been stained. What products would you recommend?
The TWP Semi-Solid. One coat. https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-pro-series
We have an Ipe deck 12 years old and some 2 years old and in good condition in Michigan. We have used various oils/stains on it. None have held up well. It actually looks like it wasn’t even done last year. What would you recommend?
The issue is the IPE, not the stain. IPE requires an annual cleaning and recoating due to the extreme density of the wood. Most use TWP 116 Rustic color for IPE.
The Ipe has been powerwashed and cleaned before being stained yearly. If we chose to use TWP 1500 what procedure should we use – is there a specific cleaning agent we need to use?
Please post a pic of the current condition for prep help.
Here are the pictures of the Ipe decks
For pre, use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Stain after with the TWP. Many use Rustic color for IPE wood.
This is what the IPe originally looked like 15 years ago. This picture is inside gazebo but outside was identical to this at that time
I am wanting to stain over Sherwin Williams Superdeck semi-solid in Leeward color (grey). I have stripped some of the deck to bare wood and other parts are in very good shape so wanted to cost over. Can I use TWP to go over the sherwin Williams? Also, where can I see available colors (greys) and where can I buy the stain?
No, you can’t use TWP or really any other penetrating stain over the Super Deck. It will have to be removed first.
Hi There!
Please let me know whether you ship to Toronto, ON Canada: TWP 1500 series.
If yes, what is the approximate shipping cost and the delivery time?
Thanks,
Only the TWP 200 is allowed in Canada: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
For cost, add to cart and enter your shipping address. Takes about 3-4 days to Toronto.
OK, here goes: Western red cedar, deck built three years ago, has been in Oregon rain and sun. Wood was vat-soaked by the mill in Messmer’s Natural Oil Stain. Wood’s in good condition but no longer repels water.
I’m wondering if TWP will adhere OK to this wood, after cleaning, of course. For other info, we have about 450 sq.ft., including stairs and railing.
My neighbor swears by TWP. He has a wood hammock stand that withstood something like 25 winters in Michigan and now 5 in Oregon, and it still looks good.
You will have to prep by stripping and brightening, not cleaning:
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
One kit will work. About 4-5 gallons of the TWP 100 Series after.
Thank you. Not cheap, but sounds like good products.
However–I like the idea of the lower VOC of 1500 series, both for the atmosphere and for my exposure when applying this. Is there a reason I should use 100 rather than 1500?
No, you can use either in Oregon.
Cedar house in Southeast Michigan
Restain. Multiple coats of Sherwin Williams semi transparent penetrating oil and lastly 5 years ago 1 coat of Benjamin Moore oil stain. We would like to use twp 1500 for restaining. Will there be any issues?
No issues after you remove your current stain as you will need to remove when switching brands of stain. For help with removal, post some pictures.
Thanks
We stained our deck with TWP 1500 last year and loved how it turned out. We applied 2 coats with 30-minutes in-between each coat and wiped down the excess stain following the 2nd coat with rags. One year later the color has faded. Please review the 2 photos and let us know what prep is needed before applying a new coat of the TWP 1500. Thanks.
Use the Gemini Restore Kit at 1/2 normal strength and then apply one coat of the TWP.
I refinished my deck last spring with 1500. I stripped cleaned and brightened. The first 5 feet are now really dark and the rest looks good? What can I do?
Use the Gemini Restore Kit for prep and apply one light coat of the TWP.
Why did this happen?
Dirt and grime from your trees, etc.
It looks like the coating did not soak in correctly, especially on the steps. Was the wood wet either visibly or internally? That could repel the train. Also, how did you rep when you recoated in September?
Hello,
Do you sell the two 1500 stain in sample size containers, I would like to present a sample to my homeowners before we begin purchasing gallons of stain?
Thanks,
Eric
