I live in Michigan and I’m thinking about using TWP1500 Series stain for my unfinished cedar shutters and window boxes. The wood is over 10 months old. Is this a good choice for this type of application and what type of future maintenance will be required?
Yes, this is the correct product for MI. Clean and recoat as needed every 3-6 years for vertical wood.
I live in Michigan. I have a 20 year old white cedar deck covered, that was coated with deck correct. I have stripped, power washed, and sanded (80 grit)the deck back to natural . What is my next move? We like the natural look of the white cedar.. The overall square footage is 1500 . The steps and outside 3 foot does get sun and weather..

My deck is treated pine, 7 yrs old, was stained with 1500 in 2018 and again in 2021 with 2 coats. Have had continual problem with mold/ mildew ever since the restain in 2021.
Just used cleaner and brightener and would like to restain with 1500. Should I do one or two coats? Any other advice on mold prevention? The deck is shady about half the day.
Prep and recoat with one coat of the TWP. After it dries, apply the RAD Guard.
Is the TWP 1500 stain a semi transparent stain
Yes it is.
I’m looking for what stain/series to use on my porch. It has cypress siding, railing and beams. The floor is treated pine. All around 10 years old. Located in MS. What stain would I need? Thanks
We would suggest the TWP 1500 Series for all wood. Make sure to prep first. If you need help with the prep, post some pics in comments.
The last “Ipe Oil” I used on my Ipe wood deck turned dark gray color after 8 months or so, as you can see in the attached picture where I am power washing it. Why does it turn that ugly color and will TWP do that as well?
That happens with IPE Oil, it darkens over time. The best product by far for IPE is the TWP Natural Effect:

See a review here:

I used TWP 1500 clear *No UV on my deck two years ago. What prep do I need to do and should I switch to a UV protection 1500 series? What will the UV protection do for the wood?
Use the Restore A Deck Stripper Kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit
Use a tinted color will prevent the UV from fading or graying the wood.
I’m looking for a stain for my new pressure treated pine deck. I’ve let it weather for the last 7 months. Thanks
Use the TWP 1500 series.

The deck is Brazilian Cherry. Coated once several years ago with Penofin Penetrating Oil Finish. What should I clean the deck with before recoating? I’d like to use TWP 1501. Will it work with a tight grain, hardwood like Brazilian Cherry?
Yes, you can use the TWP for this but you will need to remove the Penofin first by stripping and brightening:

Hi, used twp200, 207 butternut on my 20 year old pressure treated deck 5 years ago. Living in Ontario, should I use the same product or a 1500 series? Also what stain colour would be similar?
1500 is not allowed in CA so you will need the same 200 Series.
I am putting up a timber frame pavillion made from white pine. Will 1500 series stain work for protecting the frame. Mostly vertical surfaces. Would like to reduce how frequently it needs to be recoated.
Yes, after the wait and prep. New wood cannot be stained right away:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Does TWP stain have different prep than another brand of stain? I was reading through your new deck stain stops and saw things like only apply 1 coat. Would that be the same for other brands as well or specific to TWP stain?
It is the same for all penetrating semi-transparent stain brands.
What TWP product is best for my new cedar deck?
See this about new wood:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 1500 or 100 Series after the wait and prep.
I used restore stripper, brighter, and 1500 Simi Transparent Natural Stain 18months ago. Want to restain deck, should i clean deck and restain?
Yes, use the Gemini Restore Kit when you are recoating.
Can I use your deck stain on a soffit? Can I use it over a Sherwin Williams semi trans water base stain?
Yes, you can use it on a soffit. No matter what, if you are switching brands of semi-transparent stain, you must remove the old coatings first.
I have sanded cedar with 220 grit and ready to stain it with TWP 1500 clear. I went to ACE Hardware and they tell me 1500 has been discontinued. I live in Tulsa, OK
Hi Rick, the 1500 Series has not been discontinued. Also, you prepped incorrectly. Sanding closes the pores of the wood and this creates issues with the TWP penetrating. 220 grit is much too fine. You need to open back up the pores. Let is weather for a couple of months and then use the Gemini Restore Kit for prep. Only 1 coat of stain and od not sand again.
understand…as for 1500 being discontinued, I went to three different ACE Hardware stores and all three checked their inventory and showed that ACE had discontinued carrying it. I do not have anyone else locally that cares TWP products that I am aware of.
Order from our website directly.
Can the 1500 be left in the pump sprayer if the project extends into several days?
Days, yes. Not weeks.
This can also vary on the sprayer quaility, not the stain.
What stain color and series did I order this year?

Your last order was in 2021. It was for 1515 Honeytone as were your prior orders.
I used TWP 201 cedar tone on my deck about 4 years ago because I could not find the 1500 series locally. It’s now time to clean and re-stain. Can I use the Twp 1500 series on top of the old 201 TWP?
No. You would need to strip and brighten to switch:

My deck had been neglected for many years. I cleaned it, sanded it, cleaned and brightened it, and then used TWP 1500 in Dark Oak. I did 2 coats wet on wet application. Although my deck is still damaged from all of those years without treatment, it now is repelling water and looking fabulous. Very happy with the results and with the ease of application! Until I can replace the wood, I feel very confident with the protection from TWP 1500. Thanks!
Looks awesome!
Pine deck in great condition. Previous owner applied orange latex solid stain. I’ve stripped it to about 99 percent bare wood. Getting the other 1 percent off has taken me almost a full day of labor but most of it is still there. Two questions: 1. will applying 1500 over deck be possible. 2. Will the orange latex stain that remains stand out.
1. After full removal, you need to use this kit for final prep to open up the wood grain:
https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
2. It has to come off 100%.
It is an impossibility to get it all off. The only remaining is inside of checks in the boards. So the implication is that if I can not remove that minuscule amount TWP is not a product I should be using?
You cannot use a semi-transparent stain over a solid stain as it can have issues with adhering and or the solid stain showing through. This is not related to TWP but any stain with a lower opacity.
If you can deal with it showing through on the inside of the boards a little, then you should be okay as far as performance.
Yes that was the question. The solid stain is still in cracks and other hard to reach places. This is what it looks like.
You should be okay then.
Thanks for all thehelp. Final question, I know1500 is a penetrating product. In thefew placeswheretheoldcoating remains, willit (dark oak) color theoldsolid stain or willtheoldstain showthrough as it’scurrent color. Tryingto decidebetween sticking with oak or changing to cedar tone so theoldcoating willstick outless
It will show through the TWP so best to use a color that will blend it.
When prepping for 1500 Black Walnut over douglas fir, it is advisable to apply a wood conditioner such as Daly’s Benite, prior to staining? I’ve had blotching issues in the past with doug fir floors using interior clear oil finishes that were remedied with conditioner. Thanks.
No, do not use a conditioner with TWP.
In prepping for 1500 stain, I used a paint remover for some difficult areas on my garage door. When I applied the brightener, I noticed some areas still had paint remover residue present. I used denatured alcohol to fully remove it because it evaporates. There doesn’t appear to be any difference between the areas where I applied the brightener and those with the denatured alcohol. Should I reapply the brightener over the areas where I used the alcohol? Thanks.
Yes, to make sure it is an even pH balance.
Teak wood is 4 year old flooring for covered front porch. Not previously stained but has turned a greyish color. We would like to restore the rich color of teakwood if possible. Do you think your product can achieve our goal?

Stain with the TWP 1500 Series in Natural or Pecan color.
Is TWP 1500 available in slate grey? 100 series is not compliant in Pa, and client will probably want slate grey.
No, but the 200 Series has a slate gray.

We have an old seasonal cabin. It was last stained with Cabot’s Australian Timber Oil, approximately 8 years ago. The siding is dry and thirsty for stain and thus we hope to switch to TWP. It’s not accessible to easily strip. Can we clean the siding and apply the TWP semi solid 1500 product?
No, you have to strip and brighten whenever you switch stain brands.
How many square feet can I expect to cover per gallon of 1500 series stain.
150-250 sq feet per gallon per coat.
I’m refurbishing a 28 year old log cabin. I striped the old finish off the logs and have sanded them with 80 grit sandpaper. Now I’m getting ready to apply new stain. In the time it took to strip all the logs, some of them have begun to turn gray again. What should I use to brighten them and prepare them for restaining? Also, I’m thinking of using the 1500 series stain. Any recommendations?
Clean and brighten for final prep after sanding: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
The 1500 Series would work very well.
Can you apply TWP 1500 directly over Woodwright 3000?
No, you would have to remove that first.
9 year old pressure treated stairway in upstate NY. Applied one coat of of 1500 yesterday & handrails are dry and look like they could use another coat. Can another coat be applied?
Second coats need to be wet on wet so best to leave them alone for now. You can always lightly clean and apply another coat to them next year.
Thanks so much!
Installed appropriately 3months ago. Premium pine (not 100% sure). Brand new wood. Thinking about the 1500 series. It’s allowed in NY. I’m in west Babylon, long Island.
The 1500 Series is the correct product. See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Most of the deck wood absorbed The stain like you described but a few small areas look as if the 1500 stain is still wet. The stain has been on the deck for 20 hr. Will it dry ?
Give it a few days, it should be okay.
I live at 6500′ in Colorado, and my new deck gets over 8 hours fulls sun each day. I’m thinking of doing the TWP1500 this fall, though that product is semi-transparent. Should I use something more solid? If so, which product? Thanks
No, you would want the TWP 1500 Series.
I have an old dock. Has recently cleaned back to bare wood. A fair amt of cracking. Which stain do you recommend? I want some color. Cedar perhaps.
Where do you live?
South Carolina
The best would be the TWP Semi-solid colors for this dock in full sun.

I have a 15 year old cedar deck that I had all the horizontal surfaces sanded (630ft2) and one coat of TWP 101 Cedartone applied 6/23. Previously deck stained with Benjamin Moore Arborcoat solid deck stain 2 years ago and severe pealing from all horizontal surfaces. After several rainy days it appears that the TWP has wash away and want to apply another coat using 1500 product. Any special prep that you would recommend before applying? Can I just power wash, allow to dry and apply new stain?
As a side note, the former company I hired to sand and seal the deck just blew off the sawdust after sanding and applied the first coat of TWP100. No special prep was done before the first coat.
If you sand, you should never sand finer than 80 grit. If sanded, you should clean and brighten after to open the wood pores with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
When wood is sanded, you can only apply 1 coat of TWP. All that being said, you cannot just add another coat to your sanded deck at this point, and not of a different series. Best to leave it as is until next Spring. It will be fine. When time, do a full prep and recoat then.
Thanks for your response. A follow up question is how many gallons for 630ft2? Can I use a different series next year after cleaning and brightening?
Strip and brighten if you switch series.

For one coat, about 4 gallons. Two coats, about 6 gallons.
I need to re-coat my 5 year old porch, I used TWP 100 Prarie grey back then.. Now not available in Ohio. What to do?
Sorry, but we do not have a gray that will work for you in the scenario in OH. You can remove it and start over with a different color.
Can I cover it with a darker color of the 1500 series w/o extensive surface prep?
No, the gray would have to be fully removed first.
OK, what do you recommend to remove it, and do you have small samples of the stain available? Thanks for the
quick reply!!

Large 16′ wide 10′ high cedar doors, 80+ years old. The wood is sound and beautiful. Was previously finished with Sikkens proluxe which is now peeling off. It faces SSE, exposed to full sun until 2-3pm, NY area. Also gets some rain splash which causes blackening of the lower foot or so. Would TWP 1500 with a recoat schedule work better than a varnish? Thinking about how long it would look good and how much work goes into the maintenance refinish.
Varnish will peel on a deck. You have to fully remove the Sikkens before using the TWP or any other penetrating stain brand. You clean and recoat with the TWP in the future.
Where can I buy this in Wyoming?
We sell online only as a TWP dealer: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
I can’t order the semi-solid stain in NJ for my composite deck…would anything else work that would be in compliance with the state requirements?
Sorry but no.
Also have a large deck with rail of pressure treated wood in upstate NY the receives 50% direct sun.
It is 7 years old and the exposed parts are just starting to show signs of graying, with some mildew on rails only.
Which product would allow the longest protection going forward, and what prep materials would be needed?
I asked before that the “rustic” color seemed a good choice, but is it too red?
Thanks for the help to determine my needs, Tim
You will need the TWP 1500 series for NY: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
Prep with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I have a 6 month old pressure treated deck that receives 70% sun exposure in east Tennessee
It is clean with same wood rails.
Which product would allow the longest protection?
Any Prep needed?
The “rustic” color was my choice, but looks to be more reddish than other?
Would appreciate some help to purchase correct product.
Thanks, Tim
Same answer as above.
Cedar T&G soffits, house built in 1984 (39 years old), will be sanded to raw wood to remove mildew and old sealant, then treated with RMR 141 to kill mildew roots, then let to dry. Thinking of clear TWP, not worried about UV protection as the soffits never get direct light. I assume it will slightly darken the raw wood but be pretty much the look of cedar with no stain color.
Hi. What was your question?
What effect will no UV protection have on soffits that never get exposed to direct sunlight? Will your product help to retard or stop return on mildew? Will the clear product appear to be as water would on the wood?
The Clear will still gray with the if indirect UV but might take many years.
Yes it will help with mildew. Clear will not enhance the wood grain. Only one of the colored tints will enhance the wood grain and all colors offer UV protection
I have a 14 year old redwood deck, it is the front door entrance, East facing. It had been stained many times by prior homeowners therefore I am not sure what was used. I have sanded well over 96% of the stain off to bare wood. Looking for a semi solid stain to restore the deck
Hello, post some pics for prep advice and where do you live?
New deck with Tamarach ( Larch) green wood. I live in Canada and will bring the stain across the border with me. Any border restrictions for the stain? Is TWP 1500 the best stain or Semi solid Pro series?
The 100, Semi-Solids, or 1500 Series are allowed in Canada. You can use the TWP 200 Series.
https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
what is the the best stain for resealing my deck?
1. Age of wood = 10 years
2. Type of wood = Redwood
3. Condition of the wood = good
4. previously stained with TWP 1502
5. the deck is located in zipcode 94549 (San Francisco Bay Area). About 1200 sqft and very little used/walked on.
You will need to use the TWP 1500 Series for CA. It is the best option as well.
What’s the difference between TWP 100 and TWP 1500?
VOC compliance. Not all states can use the TWP 100 Series.
I live in Revere, Massachusetts and cannot find anyone who sells TWP, even though your website says they do. Looking for Clear , 1500 series. HELP!!!

I just built a 700 square foot PT deck and am interested in treating it with TWP 1500. I live at 6500 feet altitude in dry Colorado, and my deck gets full sun exposure. How long should I allow the PT to dry? It’s already drying, and it’s only been a few weeks, I’ll tell you that. From what I’ve read, the tinted stains provide the fullest UV protection; am I correct in this? If there’s any other information you think I should know, it’s welcomed. Thank you!
See here: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
It has to be tinted for UV protection.
I have a newly built pine loge house was wondering what stain should I use on the loges to keep the natural loge look?
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
After wait and prep, use the TWP 1500 Series.
1500 Natural is beautiful! It will keep your wood grain look and still have the protection ur looking for. My 35 yr. Old deck was transformed by this stain/color!
