I have a 2 year old cedar deck that was stained immediately when it was new with sherwin williams oil stain. The stain had water stains immediately and was very worn the first year. What product should I use to strip the old stain and should I use the 100 or 1500 series. The deck is in Wisconsin, full sun with no shade trees and faces south.
Age = just installed PT wood 3 months ago
When should I stain? now or wait until next year? I plan to use TWP 1500
When it says to apply ‘wet on wet’ does that mean you can literally apply the 2nd coat 5 minutes after you applied it or do you still need to wait some period of time between coats as long as its not fully cured?
Prep with the Gemini Restore Kit while pressure washing. Stain with the 1500 Series. You can buy direct from us.
Age of wood – 16 years, 10 years, 9 years, 1 year
Type of wood – Western Red Cedar
Condition – some cracking and drying out. Doesn’t hold stain for more than a year. Graying. Stairs grow green algae when we get rain and humidity.
1 year wood – not been stained yet
Remaining wood – TWP 4 years ago – whatever you sold in TX at Kelly Moore – not sure what TWP #
Multi-level cedar decks in Austin, TX. Main deck is North-West facing (heavy foot traffic) full-afternoon sun; small portion is east facing (light foot traffic and shaded with PT lattice wood work) and another is south facing (no foot traffic). The stairs are in a shaded location and tend to get a green growth on them.
Problems in past with product and color availability in Austin.
We plan to power wash everything, Is there additional prep work required? What would you suggest for stain product(s)? Where can we get the products you are going to suggest?
chadmichael, if switching to TWP then you should remove the Messmers first with a stain stripper then brightened. In their defense, TWP cannot be applied to new wood. It should weather for 4-12 months first.
Andrew, your wood must be 100% free of the paint before you apply the TWP. Once the wood is prepped correctly then you can use this.
7 month old cedar deck, was finished with messmers cedar tone in October last year by contractor, has faded quickly to dull color and white spots where there are knots in the boards. I bid for TWP and he used Messmers without notifying me and then said they had problems with TWP on new decks. I now need to already refinish my deck, is ok to use TWP with out stripping off the faded messmers and just giving it a good cleaning first with a cleaner. Or should I stick with the original product applied. Any tips would be appreciated, this company wants 550 dollars to refinish a 10×18 deck they built and left looking not good. I would like to do it myself for that money, and I have a pressure washer at hand. Thanks for your help
1.Age of wood? more than 10 years
2.Type of wood? treated 2×6’s
3.Condition of the wood? in decent condiction
4.Has it been stained previously and if so with what brand of stain? never been stained
5.Small description of the area to be treated.
The deck has had been painteed and re painted year after year. We scrapped all the oold paint off and the deck boards look to be in decent shape. I dont believe paint is the answer anymore. However, I never knew that you could stain treated lumber. Is this true? I would love to stain the deck and bring it back to life. Will this product work for my deck?
For Wisconsin I would suggest the 100 Series. We are an online retailer and personally do not have dealers in your area.
I have a 15 year old cedar deck, in very good condition, that will be stripped and then a brightener applied. Horizontal surfaces only, no railings or spindles. It faces east and receives full sunlight until around 5:00 pm. I live in Wisconsin and the deck gets all the winter elements. I’m trying to decide between the TWP100 series and TWP1500 series. What is the difference between these two products? It appears that either one would be good choice. Would recommend one over the other? Also, is there a dealer in the Milwaukee area that sells TWP as well as the Gemini Restore Kit.
Thanks for your reply.
You can use TWP on fir wood.
I am having a bamboo fence screen placed over an old fence. I plan on shoring up the existing fence with pressurized grated hemlock fir brown lumber. Can I use California redwood as a sealant for this application?
Prep the wood with the Gemini Restore Kit.
Stain the ceiling with the 1515 Honeytone and the floor with the 1503 Dark Oak.
thabich, you cannot use TWP on top of a solid stain. You would need to remove the SW solid stain completely. This is not easy and would need to be sanded off.
I want to stain interior of a screened porch that has T&G white pine boards for both ceiling and knee wall. I would like a golden (lighter) look. The white pine is 20 years old and has never been finished before. I cleaned the mildew off of it every year with bleach. As such, it has whitened up quite a bit but is pretty clean.
Would TWP1500 be a good product to prevent having to bleach it every year to get rid of mildew? Also, how would it work with the white pine boards?
I also wold like to stain the pressure treated floor but would like that to be a darker color (brownish).
I just bleached all the mildew off both PT floor and white pine walls/ceiling are very clean. Any other prep?
Since it is a covered screened in porch, there is little sun or water exposure. Just would like to add some color and prevent the mildew.
1.5years old
2.cedar hand rails
3.good
4.1st application Olympic stain 2yrs later Sheman Williams solid color stain
5.full sun,snow,rain,silver maple tree pollen
Doyle, just one coat on new wood then a light maintenance coat next year.
John, TWP 100 and 1500 is not compliant for Canada.
Mitch, you cannot use TWP on top of a solid stain. It will not blend or penetrate properly.
We have a Pier & Boathouse constructed in January 2013 and are now ready to stain. Should we apply 2 coats to the areas that are open to the Sun?
I have a one year old cedar deck which had a one coat acrylic stain applied after sanding. It is already graying with most of the stain wearing off. Is the 1500 a good choice or the 100? Can you ship either to Canada?
Thanks.
I have an 8 year old deck that was stained with a redwood solid Cabot oil based stain. We have sanded and used chemical stripper. The wood is in good condition but much of the stain is still left behind. We have morning shade and full afternoon sun. Lots of snow in winter and deck up against a pool.
Any assistance would be so much appreciated!

As long as the wood is still clean
New deck.
Pine and Cedar
New wood
Not previously stained
16 x 24 ft deck a railing
hi, is it ok if 2-3 weeks elapse after applying the cleaner and brightener before I stain?
Just one coat this time.
We had a wooden built last November – the railings are cedar and the floor is pressure treated pine. We were told it should dry out for about 4 months. We are now having it cleaned and sealed. Do you recommend one coat or two coats (it has never had anything applied)
Thank you,
Kay Merrell
Narasu, TWP is not legal for Canada and cannot be shipped there or brought across the border.
We have a pressure treated wood deck, aged about 8-10 yrs, previously stained but is now completely stripped off and looks quite ugly. Full sun from morning until about 5 pm in summer, winter is cold with lots of snow… open deck, no cover at all. Need to restain, live in Toronto(Canada) area. Total area about 500 sqft. Please suggest stain and the best procedure to be done. If required I can get it shipped to a US address.
For 2 coats you would need about 10 gallons for 1000 s. feet.
1) Age of Wood – About 12 years old
2) Type of Wood – Western Red Cedar
3) Condition of wood – Good, freshly sanded all surfaces to bare wood
4) Previously stained using Flood CWF-UV about 3 years ago.
5) Deck is about 700 sqft. Total about 1000 sqft with railing and skirt. All surfaces had weathered to just about bare wood, so all surfaces were sanded to bare wood to remove any remaining stain and weathering.
Will 5 gallons be enough to stain this deck?
Please read this about new decking:

* My deck is 9 months old
* It is made of pressure treated pine

From what I’ve read, TWP 1500 would be the best product. What is your opinion and recommendation on application method?
Please read this article:

1500 Series
Question: (1)Do I need to do any wood prep beyond clean and brighten to apply TWP to a previously stained deck. (2) Should I use TWP 100 or 1500?
Background details: 8-yr old pressure treated, good condition although I am replacing all top rails. Stained 5-years ago with Cabot Australian Timber Oil (Mahogany Flame).
Most of stain on decking is worn, particularly in traffic areas. Spindles all remain with consistent stain coverage.
Caren, prep first with the Gemini Restore Kit. You would need a 5 gallon pail for the 2 coats.
1. Age of wood: three years
2. Type of wood: Pressure treated pine
3. Condition: decent- some splintering in a few areas. Doesn’t appear to have been stained.
My deck is a little over 500 square feet. How much of the TWP 1500 do I need and should I plan on two coats?
Thank you!
Caren
You should always prep before staining. You would want to use the Gemini Restore kit. Sample credits are applied after the order is placed. Just leave a not in the comment area during checkout about it.
age : 8 years
pine treated
good but cracking never stain or painted
1000 square feet deck
90 ft. of railing
The deck and railing were cleaned in August 2012 and i have ordered 3 sample stains. i like the dark oak. It covers well and I believe that I will not have to clean the area again.
I would appreciate your advice.
If I order online how do I get the rebate for the 3 samples
Thank you Terry brown

what product/prep process do you recommend?
Which product do you recommend for my situation 100 or 1500?
I have a 25 year pressure treated pine wood deck in decent condition for its age. It has only been waterproofed and never stained. About a quarter of the deck can get up to 6 hours of direct sunlight. Most boards are fine but the sunny ones are weather worn but acceptable. There is some black mold & mildew plus greening. Overall the deck is gray colored now. What do you suggest?
Our deck was built October 2012. Made of cedar, live in Minneapolis, MN. Wood has bleached out immensely over winter due to constant sun exposure. 2 level deck, 14′ x 20′ and 26′ x 20′, 2 flights of stairs.
Would you use twp 1500? Would you use Gemini deck cleaner? How many gallons o stain do I need for this project?
Hi!
Our deck was built from cedar 7 months ago here in Minneapolis, MN.
We have not stained it yet. It gets a ton of sun & snow as well. We have read a lot on what stain to use and we would like to know what you might recommend between the twp 100 or 1500 stain? and also how any gallons necessary for our deck? It is two stories., one floor is 14′ x 20′ and one is 26′ x 20′. Plus 2 flights of cedar wood stairs.
Also what do you recommend forvprep?
