Help. We just had a deck company strip, brighten and 2 weeks later stain our deck and gazebo (yesterday) with your product. An hour later we got an unexpected rain storm, and then another during the night. What will this do to the finish? The stain also ran onto the gazebo screens. Now what? Thanks
Have a new deck that is ready to be finished. Live in SE Michigan, deck on west side of home, installed in Oct2012, applied cleaner and scrubbed w/ brush two weeks ago to prep for finishing. Want to leave wood grain showing through and keep natural color as much as possible, what is best product to consider?
wood is 1 month old cedartone decking sold by Menards. This is treated wood with an added color to simulate cedar. Have any advise on using TWP 1500 on this material?
rsppjwg, you do not need to seal after the stain. Hard to say on the pail as we would need a total sq. footage including the floors, railings, and steps.
5yrs, white cedar, good, Cabot natural deck 2 tiered. Does sealing after staining help longevity? If so what sealer? Will 5 gallon be enough to cover 16by 16 and 16 by 12, 5 steps and railing?
Dan J, you need to apply it right away while the wood is still wet. A week or so is okay to wait.
Just finished stripping entire cedar deck with RAD.Do I need to apply the brightener immediatly? I will also be staining with TWP 1500. How long can I let the deck sit unstained? The weather doesnt look like its going to be favorable for staining for a while.
George, you would need to remove the CWF with the Restore A Deck Stain Stripper and pressure washing. Neutralize with the Restore a Deck Brightener when done. Stain with the 1500 Series.
Vicky, you would want the TWP 1500 Series for this.
15 year old pressure treated wood
wood is rough in spots has been pressure washed & stain was partially removed by pressure washing, part of deck is covered and in good shape & has not been pressure washed
It was stained previously, using flood cfw-uv
8 years old…pressure washed with Jomax and bleach…repaired…VA full morning sun…
Wait 4 months, clean and brighten, then apply 1 coat of the TWP.
Age of wood? 1 month
Type of wood? Kiln Dried Pine (Yellawood)
Condition of the wood? New
Has it been stained previously and if so with what brand of stain? No
Small description of the area to be treated.
10X20 open deck, full sun in upstate South Carolina.
I am planning on sealing with TWP 1500 in natural. I know you are supposed to wait at least 4 months on Pressure Treated wood, but because it’s Kiln Dried my contractor said to stain/seal right away (or at least within a month). I was planning on pressure washing, wait 2 days, and then apply TWP 1500. What are your thoughts?
Joyce, Either would be fine but for this I would suggest the 1500 Series.
My redwood deck is 20 years old. It was stained 3 years ago with Olympic semi-transparent. After powerwashing, most of the old stain is gone. I plan to strip what is left and treat with deck brightener. I live in Nebraska. Would TWP 100 or TWP 1500 offer the best protection for my deck?
We do not suggest it as it could change the formula.
In the past I have added oils with stain to help it last longer and penetrate cedar decking. I know you cannot thin the TWP1500 but can you add Danish Oil?
Paul, if you want to use the TWP then you will need to strip off the CWF and brighten the wood first.
17 Yrs old // Cedar // good // CWF // complete house some sun , some shade overall very happy w/ results from CWF but does not hold up long enough // usually pressure wash and do 2 coats
Brian, best to strip and brighten the wood for the prep. The TWP will work better if the wood is free from old coatings.
Should I use a deck cleaner or stain stripper on my 8 yr old cedar deck in good condition that was previously stained using PWC 1000 deck stain? We recently moved into this house, believe that it was stained approx 5 yrs ago (wood on deck is very faded, the spindles are only mildly faded). We live in Southeastern Wisconsin. Deck is in full sun throughout the day.
Charles, pressure washing does not strip old stain. You need a stain stripper first then pressure wash off. If you are switching series you can just clean and brighten the wood with the Gemini Restore Kit and pressure wash for the prep.
I built my log sided home in 2005. I put 2 coats of TWP 100 originally and 1 more in 2009. If I go with the 1500 do I need to strip the stain from my log sided building. I used Cedartone stain. Is stripping the same as power washing with a good cleaner agent?
You need to strip first then brighten the wood. Stains Pads are best. It can be brushed as well. If spraying you need to back brush. The 1500 is comparable to the 100. We are an online dealer.
I currently have an existing stain on my pressure treated deck. Last time I used sikkens, however am not very happy with the results. It did not take very well however there is still a bit of stain left on the deck. If I purchased a color similar to what I have on there would I be able to apply it right over or do I need to strip? Also I would like to know how your product can be applied. Can I use a brush, roller or sprayer?
Does this product perform as well as your 100 series which I’ve read good reviews about?
Where can your products be purchased?
sandra, TWP does not come in a paint or white color. I would prep with the Gemini Restore Kit then stain with the 1500 Series.
Our deck was built in the late 80’s and wraps around a 18×33 foot pool with railings all around. The last stain that was put on this deck was around 5-6 years ago being the Cabot’s waterproofing with added tone color. The deck railings were painted white with latex paint. We are sanding down the railings but only taking off the peeling paint. By doing this will I have to re-paint with latex on the railings or do you make a white stain? Some of the boards on the floor need to be re-placed but with it being older wood i have read that sanding it is not healthy due to what is in the wood. I also have to be careful with the pool and everything getting into it. Any suggestions on what products to use?
New redwood gate and pergola here in SoCal. What do you recommend? Thanks!
Janice,
1. yes
2. try for 95% removal or more
Don, TWP is a penetrating oil based stain. You can get samples on the site for $6 each to test.
1.Deck is 3 years-old
2.Pressure Treated Lumber
3. Wood is in good condition, no graying.
4. Previously applied Behr semi-transparent stain to our deck, which started peeling in 6 months. I have stripped & sanded the deck, but a few spots have some residual stain.
5. Deck is in full sun for the majority of the day. This is also the main entry into our home, so lots of foot traffic. We need something that is going to provide maximum protection.
Questions:
1. Is TWP 1500 the product that I should use? If not, what do you suggest?
2. Do I need to get absolutely ALL of the old stain off before staining with TWP? The Behr that is left is REALLY on there. Funny that lots of spots were peeling up, but the residual stain refuses to give up it’s hold.
Thanks, Janice
hello. is this the solvent base version ? we have white cedar about 25 years old in decent shape. just used sherwin williams water base 3 coats and pealed completely. A real mess. what do you recommend ? How do I get color charts. ? No dealer in my area. Thanks in advaice and help !

My rough cut cedar 16×16 pergola is 3 years old and was originally stained with Cabot semi-transparent natural cedar. I’m having it cleaned and restained this summer. Which of our products should I use?

Adam, use the Restore A Deck Stripper followed by the brightener for the prep. Stain with the 1500 Series.
Yes you should wait and prep kiln dried wood. Please see this:
http://www.twpstain.com/twp-stain-comparison
Age: 5 years
Type: Rough cut fir
Condition: greying at base and at edges, some warping on a small number of boards
Stain: Olympus oil-based semi-transparent natural tone
Fence approx 1250 sqft
Do I still need to wait before applying TWP even if I have kiln-dried treated pine decking?
What is the difference between TWP 100 vs. 1500?
Jack,
Please read this article:

new, installed 2 months
salt treated
good condition
no
650 sq,ft, 2 steps wrap 75% and vertical deck boards finish the side.
It would best to remove the Biowash Natural Deck Oil first with a stain stripper followed by the brightener for the prep.
We have cedar decking that is 15 years old and in very good shape, having used Biowash natural deck oil to maintain it over the years. That product is no longer available, and TWP was recommended as best alternative. Do we need to completely strip the Biowash off the wood in order for TWP to absorb properly, or can we just use cleaner/wood brightener on it and then apply TWP over the remaining Biowash?
Gary, TWP is a penetrating semi-transparent stain. It is not a paint.
In the past I used In-Wood natural for my
cedar deck in central oregon, where there is
snow in the winter, but usually the weather is
dry.
Is the “natural” TWP paint-like or does the wood
end up with a natural look?
Amy, strip with the Restore A Deck Stain Stripper then brighten the wood. Stain with the 100 Series for WI.
