Rick, as long as you prep the wood first you can. Best to prep with the Gemini Restore Kit.

Lis, you must remove the Cabot 100% before applying the TWP. This will need to be sanded off since you said it was a semi-gloss stain.

marashi1, for newer wood and in Minnesotta we would suggest the 100 Series as it penetrates a little better then the 1500 series.

Jean, you must remove the Thompsons first by using a stripper and or sand it off. Once removed, stain with the 1500 Series.

John Donalds, they are both excellent stains and perform about the same. The 100 Series cannot be used in all states though.

One year old pressure treated wood, never stained or sealed. Sun exposure most of the day in Minnesota.

Should I use TWP 100 or 1500?

I would like to know why either one works better.

Thanks,

Yes you can return. Please review our refund policy at the bottom. For 1000 sq. feet and 2 coats you should have easily used 8-10 gallons.
1) Age of Wood – About 12 years old

2) Type of Wood – Western Red Cedar

3) Condition of wood – Good, freshly sanded all surfaces to bare wood

4) Previously stained using Flood CWF-UV about 3 years ago.

5) Deck is about 700 sqft. Total about 1000 sqft with railing and skirt. All surfaces had weathered to just about bare wood, so all surfaces were sanded to bare wood to remove any remaining stain and weathering.

Will 5 gallons be enough to stain this deck?
Finished staining the deck this past weekend with TWP 1501 Stain. Very happy with the result! However, I used only about 4 gallons to put 2 coats (wet-on-wet) on all surfaces (horizontal and vertical). The recommendation I got from this website was to get 10 gallons, so I now have an unopened 5 gallon leftover. Can this be returned?

1.) Less than 10 years
2.) SPIB No. 2 Pine
3.) Good
4.) Yes, within the last 3-5 years with some kind of crappy REDwood semi-tran. stain.
5.) Aprox. 400 sq. ft. horizontal, railings w/ 25-30 spindles.

Would like to HD-80 strip, sand where needed, wood brighten, and use TWP 1500 Dark Oak or Rustic… is it ok to jump to that kind of color difference from a pretty redwood finish to something darker like dark oak or rustic?

Steven, you can order right from our website for shipment. For 1500 feet you would need roughly 15 gallons for the two coats of TWP.

You sugegsted that I use TWP 100 for one year old pressure treated deck, never stained, in Minnesota. Why is TWP 100 preferred over TWP 1500 for this deck?

And would you use two coats or one coat is adequate.

Thanks,

Ron, clear sealers have zero UV protection. You need a tint in the stain to achieve this. The TWP in a tinted color lasts about 2 years on a horizontal.

Goldy, you will need to strip and remove to start over. I sent an email with a more detailed response.

Hayesbamp, you must have color in your stain if you want to prolong the UV graying. This will change or enhance to look. See this about new decks: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/

My deck is 4 years old, cedar, which is in good shape, but would like to apply a longer lasting clear coat seal to it. I would like to clean the wood, removing the old sealant, Olympic Waterguard for Wood. I have a 570 square foot deck with railings. How long would TWP 1500 last compared to having to do it every year currently?

20 years; cedar; good; previously stain with solid stain. Deck is under covered porch. We had it sanded down to original wood. Inexperienced workers applied 1 coat of 1500 cedartone. While we were out of town they came back and applied 2 more coats wet on wet. After more than a week, the surface is still sticky. We have not walked on it, but in large sections it appears the stain is rising up in a flakey like haze. Will this dry out eventually? Is there something we can do to fix this without re-sanding and starting over?

Age of deck: new. Being built now
Type of wood: pressure treated pine
Condition of wood: excellent
Wood has not been stained before
The deck is a two tier deck that meets up to a section of the above ground pool. We have black metal spindles in the railing. We want to keep the wood looking the way it does now. When should I apply and what should I use?

Dick, two coats wet on wet. If in Northern VA (DC Area) then you need to use the 1500. If not then the 100 Series is what you would want. You would need 15-20 gallons for the 2 coats.

I have a 24×24 pressure treated deck located in Long Island N.Y. deck is in full sun most of the day.Had Bher semi transparent on it.Did not last long.Just spent weekend stripping old finish off.Wood is fairly clean. Some minor cracks & some checking but overall cond of wood is good. How much 1500 is needed for two coats inc railings?I used the Bher products to strip & brighten wood. Will this cause a problem using TWP Stain?

Ryanf, that is for one coat. The second coat foes about 50% farther then the first coat. For your deck you probably need 2-3 gallons for the 2 coats. We like stain pads better then brushes. You can see some of our application tools here:
