Need Help with your TWP 1500 Stain?
TWP 1500 Stain is a highly rated, EPA registered wood preservative that can be used for all types of exterior wood, siding and decking. TWP 1500 Stain will perform at its maximum potential when the wood is properly prepped and when the stain is properly applied. We are here to help with your project!
Please answer these few questions to achieve the best possible results with your TWP 1500 Wood and Decking Stain.
- Age of wood?
- Type of wood?
- Condition of the wood?
- Has it been stained previously and if so with what brand of stain?

I’m about to stain a covered porch deck that is composed of tongue/groove cypress, most of which is over 50 years old, some of which is brand new. the entire surface is being hand sanded with an orbital sander. I was considering using TWP 1503. What do you suggest?
Jim Fleming, TWP would not be suggested for a Mahogany door.
I need to refinish the exterior front door on my home. The door is mahogany and mahogany veneer. It is 8.5 years old. The top half is in good shape but the lower half is severely sun damaged. I have totally removed all the previous stain and sealer. The brand of the previous stain is unknown. Can either TWP 100 or TWP 1500 be used to stain and protect the door?
Thanks
Jim
Chase, no need to stain the undersides. Please read this info on new decks:

I am installing a new cedar deck. I am wondering the proper preparation for the deck, before applying the stain. Do I need to wait a month (or how long) after the deck is assembled to apply the stain? Does it help to apply the stain the underside of the boards? I live in minnesota, so the harsh winters will likely have the most effect on the deck/stain.

Our deck is approaching 1 month old. It is pressure treated pine. So, wood is new and in great condition.
Any advice on staining would be appreciated!
The Gemini Restore Kit will help remove the graying and mold. Since it has been 8 months you may need to sand a lightly after the prepping.
8 months since installation
Cypress
good condition, but starting to grey
no previous staining
exterior deck,pergola/trellis, entry porch, columns and balcony
I’ve applied a sample of the TWP 1500 and liked the way it finished. Will the restoration kit help with the greying that has started? We also started to have mold due to the considerable rain & clouds in the North Carolina area where the house is located.
kevin f, please read this about the new deck: http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
For the older section, you should strip an brighten with the Restore A deck Stripper and brightener.

What should I use next year to protect it?

Hello- looking for advice on stain based on answers to your deck staining questions. thanks!
1) Less than a year (new house and was told the deck was installed last year).
2) Light colored, unfinished wood, not sure what type of wood.
3) Very Good condition
3) Not Previously Stained
4) About 300 sq ft of a slightly raised deck in the Chicagoland area.
Jim Wolf, you must strip off the Flood and brighten the wood for the older deck. For the newer deck, you should prep with the Gemini Restore Kit.
I have two decks….one about 15 years old that has been stained several times using the Flood product. The second deck (which is an extension of the original) was built the beginning of last summer has not been stained. Both have railing as well. I’m planning on using your 1500 Cedar. What is your recommendation in preparing both to get the most consistent color match and durability?
Eve, prep with the Gemini Restore Kit then stain with the TWP 1500 for Ohio.
Lou M, you can only use the 1500 in MA. If you want you could apply 1 coat now then another in the Spring after a light cleaning. We are an online dealer and it would take about 3 days to ship there.
This will be the first time I use TWP. I live in MA, my decking is cedar, about 13yrs old and about 600 sq ft. It’s been treated with different semi-transparent products (Cabot, Sherman Williams …) over the years. I pressure washed it about 3 weeks ago. Pretty much down to the bare wood. I read your info about wet on wet. But I was hoping for one application. Would it be OK to apply a second coat, some time later (1-2 months), if the first coat doesn’t appear to be enough? I’m looking at the 1530 or the 101. Would one be better than the other for my situation? Also, are there any dealers in MA, RI or NH? If not, do you have any idea how long shipping would take? Thanks.
Hello…
Last summer we added over 1000 sq feet of porch and deck. The wood is pressure treated pine. The floor in the porch area is covered thus not exposed to elements and it still has that yellowish tint. However, the deck part is constantly exposed to sun and elements. The wood in this area is very dry and grayish in color. I also noticed some mold growing in few areas. We are in Ohio. Please advise on products to use. Thank you!
Debbie, no you cannot use WP on top of the Behr. You must remove the Behr with a stripper and or sanding.
We have treated lumber on the deck that is mostly 20 years old. We replaced some boards this year, so a few are unfinished. The remainder were stained 2 years ago with Behr semi transparent stain. The deck is mostly shaded but not much problem with mildew. Will this stain cover the old once we power wash it?

New deck (16’x 21′) since 06/01/2013 in Saint Louis; western cedar planking
How much longer will the deck need to weather?
Which is the appropriate TWP clear preservative; 1500 or 100?
Since this is a new deck, is any cleaning or preparation product required? If so, what is recommended?
How may coats of preservative are required? If more than one, how soon after the 1st coat should the second be applied?
Joe, for MA you would need to order the TWP 1500 Series.
just built my 3 year old a custom swing set using #1 pressure treated lumber. I have always been a BM customer, but their stain gets bad reviews. Your product receives great reviews. which series would you recommend for staining the swing set? I live in MA.
Paul C, I would prep the deck with the Gemini Restore kit after the sanding. You want the wood slightly rough, not smooth. This way the TWP will absorb better. Two very light coats wet on wet would be best. no need nor can you add a sealer into the TWP.
Two years ago I bought 10 gallons of cedar tone TWP 1500 for my fence and it turned out so great that several neighbourhood people have asked about it. Fence was already two years old and I pressure washed it before applying the TWP 1501. However, my deck which I built was new, and it was treated deck lumber. I didn’t let it dry for a year, only a couple of months and when I applied the TWP 1501 stain it went on very light and did not soak into the wood. It is now, two years later and the fence still looks great but the deck is awful and faded. I am sanding it down now with a black & decker dragster. I plan to stain it when I’m done sanding which is taking a long time. 70% done. My questions are this— should I apply two coats of twp1500 or one. Should I buy and apply a sealer to the stain? I there anything you can recommend to make sure it turns out as good as my fence?
thanks
egipple, I would at least give the wood a good washing with water to remove and sand dust that may be in the wood pores.
Don Musil, prep with the Gemini Restore Kit to restore the wood color. Stain with the TWP 1515 Honeytone color.
Rod Bodmer, prep with the Gemini Restore Kit then stain with 2 coats wet on wet with the 1500 Series.
1. 2 years
2. pressure treated
3. some cracks but overall good
4. no
5. Medford Or, east side of house, no other shade than the house, adjacent to pond and hot tub, 6 inches off ground
I am looking for a product to apply to a 20plus year old redwood floor on our deck. It is currently part of a screened in deck that gets some sun exposure from the south. The wood is in good shape, the last application was Pentofin 4-5 years ago. The wood is dull and lifeless, we would like a neutral stain that would bring some of the life back to the wood
I have a 4 year old pressure treated pine deck.
It was originally finished with an acrylic product that has started to fail.
I stripped the old finish (used a chemical stripper, followed with pressure washing, and a light sanding with 60 & 80 grit to de-fir).
Should I use the deck brightener before staining even through the wood looks good?
I also noticed that after stirring up my two TWP stain samples(1501 & 1530) they both very quickly (
Vince, use the TWP 100 Series with 2 coats wet on wet:

10 year old cedar decking. Good condition wood. Previously stained with Sikkens cetol. Stripping bare with sodium hydroxide. Full exposure due south. Southeast Michigan. Which stain is recommended and how many coats?
I would try to rinse the deck lightly with a pressure washer.
1. 1 year
2. PTYP
3. Great
4. Y, TWP–of course! Semi Trans 1500
5. 600sf w/ pergola.
My question is–now that I have stained my newish deck w/ TWP…there are some areas where the sanding and splash from my incremental staining project is on the wood…I’ve used a garden hose, but it sort of just pushes it around. Can I pressure wash my deck now that it is stained without doing color damage? The splash is just from water but has mixed sawdust and dirt in it..no stain splash.
Stephen, no need to stain the underside of the deck.
Nanci, if the fence it rough wood you can stain right away with little to no prep. If smooth wood you need to wait. Please read this article:
http://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I bought some used 2×6 yellow cedar decking to redo my 25 yr old deck. I installed the cedar bottom side up to get the nicer surface up, screwed it down. The decking is really nice quality, very straight grain, only 3 small knots in a 15×15 deck.
I am sending for 2 samples of your 1500, natural and honeytone, to keep the wood color prevalent. I plan to use restore-a-deck to clean it first, but should i treat the underside of the deck? The deck is only 1-2 feet off the ground. thanks, Stephen

deg, strip and brighten with the Restore A Deck products. Not sure what color matches the SW but I would thing the Natural or Honeytone would be close. Solid or TWP for the rails would look nice.
Cedar Deck, Cedar Spindles, 13 years old
Used Sherwin Williams Deckscapes Oil Based Toner – Natural Color on Deck every 2 years
Looking to switch to TWP, What prep do you recommend, and what color of TWP 1500 would be a good match. Also what would be a good recommendation on what to do with the spindles. I have seen commentary that doing them a solid color would look nice.
Hello,
We have as new deck made of pressure treated wood. This deck is on the south side of our home surrounding a pool. Is the 1500 product a good choice fr PT wd? How long do we wait before we apply to new PT lumber? Also does your coverage estimate take into account 2 coats?
Thanks
P:eter
I would solid stain the verticals and use the TWP for the floor. Two-toned decks look nice and future maintenance is easier as well.
Recently I used restore-a-deck two step process to remove the prior Behr Premium Stain on my decking. This is multiple tier decks over 1500 sq ft! After several attempts was able to remove 95% of the floor decking stain but the vertical surfaces is near to impossible to remove it all (short of spending the summer trying to remove it and lots of $$ for more stripper!). With the cleaning i have already done will the TWP 1500 adhere to the verticals? Or, should i just prime and paint the verticals and just stain the horizontals with the TWP? Help!
Al, the CWF needs to be removed as the TWP will not perform properly if applied on top of it. Darker colors will typically last longer form UV graying/fading. You can order samples on our website.
Please Specify your recommendations for the this staining project after being pressure washed. We are staining a log home (exterior)and deck (2500sf)in upstate NY. The wood is 28 yr old white cedar in weathered condition (some graying and darkening). It has been stained several times with Flood’s CWP-UV cedar tone . We are also wondering if we need to stay with the cedar tone, or if we can go to a slightly darker color (in Semi-transparent) for added color permanence(your recommendation;difficult to determine actual colors on-line).
