TWP 1504 Black Walnut is a stunning dark brown color. Very unique but loved by consumers!
TWP 1500 Series is available in 9 semi-transparent color choices that penetrate into the wood while enhancing the natural wood grain. The 1504 Series is higher in solids content which may result in “richer” colors than the 100 Series. In general, the 1500 Series color will not match the colors in the 100.
Final TWP 1504 Black Walnut color will vary based on:
- Type of Wood
- Age of Wood
- Prepping of Wood
- Application method

Hello – I’ve got two black walnut trees on my property. I have cut them back a bit to open up the canopy thanks for a great arborist in the community. The trees drop lemon size walnuts on the deck and stain it. Would like to get an idea if this stain would hide the staining? Staining could also be caused frass from caterpillars. Not 100% sure but would like some insight into how to treat my deck so it isn’t strained.
The TWP Black Walnut is very dark so it would help to “blend” any natural organic stains from the nuts. It cannot prevent the stains.
Hi, Is this oil based? Planning on using this for a bamboo privacy fence on my deck, thanks!
This is oil-based but this will not work on bamboo.
installing a new property line fence of mangaris. Can you tell me the best method of prepping, how well the 1504 adheres to the wood, and roughly how often the fence will need refinishing? Mostly would like confirmation that this is the right product for mangaris. Thanks!
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Only 1 coat for hardwoods like mangaris. Redo every few years.
Do you suggest wet on wet over deck surface and if so, how?

Hello,
The TWP cannot prevent mud from accumulating and when you pressure-washed it, it took off some of the TWP stain. This is not a stain failure but an issue with tracking mud on your deck and then pressure washing it. Best to do a full cleaning with the Gemini Kit and then recoat. It would be best to keep the mud off as well in the future if at all possible.
After reviewing the thread, I have a question. We used the TWP dark oak and don’t like the final color. Why can’t we top coat with black walnut? I need a detailed answer, not just “you can’t do it, please. Why can’t you? What happens if you do? How is it different than just adding another coat of the same color? The answer, “You can’t” doesn’t make sense.
Adding an additional coating on top of dried and cured coating probably will not take. It will result in over-application that will need in products being sticky and shiny and premature failure potential as well.
This would be the same if trying to recoat with the same color, it is not suggested.
I am in a similar situation to Chris above.
The Dark Oak was just applied to fresh (6 month old) redwood. I would like a darker look.
Should I wait a year for our scheduled retreatment to apply the new stain? The wood still seems a little ‘Thirsty’. My guys put on a pretty thin coat.
Thanks – definitely appreciate your support on this forum.
-Neil
Yes, you will need to wait and prep next year.
TWP is a penetrating deck stain, You cannot just add more on top after drying and curing as that will result in it not soaking into the wood grain as intended. Over-application is one of the biggest reasons for deck stain failures.
As for other deck stains being easier to work with, that is not true. The same thing would apply to all penetrating deck stains.
Interior stains are very much different than exterior wood and deck stains.
What type of wood is used for the samples?
Samples are bottles of the actual stain that you apply to your wood to test: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Actually I’m planning to mix the 1504 Black Walnut I have with 1530 natural and I am wondering what I can expect in terms of color . Thank you
See the answer below. The only way to know is to test.
I’m considering mixing black walnut , which I have in hand, with 1500 clear to stain western cedar fencing. I’m hoping for a lighter version of black walnut… What can I expect?
Colors vary based on wood type and age so no way to say for certain how it will look on your wood. You can mix colors of the same series without issues.
Will this stain add a darker tint to my mangaris wood gates/fence?
Yes.
Does the stain need a sealer?
No, and you cannot apply a sealer over TWP wood and deck stain.
Only the TWP 300 Series and we do not offer it for sale on our website.
Is the 1500 series black walnut ok to use for pine fence, and is the best application rub on with a rag ,paint brush or a sprayer?
The 1500 works great for a fence. Spray and then back brush drips. Never use a rag to apply.
I used twp 1500 dark oak on my pine fence (not pressure treated). I was wondering if I could put black walnut as a second coat to make the finish a little darker or should I just apply a secod coat of dark oak. Also since my fence is not pressure treated, do you recommend using polyurethane afterwards.
You can never top coat TWP with another product or poly. Best to stick with same color.
Good day, what stain would work on a natural bamboo fence?
Sorry, but none of the TWP stains that we sell on our website will work on bamboo.
Black walnut on a mahogany front door??
TWP is not suggested for doors.
Why not?
TWP cannot be top-coated with a poly and doors typically need that to protect from dirt and grime from hands. Also potential issues with the rubber door seals and heat.
Used 1504 Black Walnut on our cedar post on porches and secondary cedar garage overhang.
Will this stain work on a bamboo fence? Thanks.
Sorry but no, it will not.
My deck has a blue-grey stain that I have power washed and still has, for the most part a lighter version of the same color. Will this dark walnut stain cover it?
No. You have to remove 100% of the previous acting when switching to TWP.
If I want to do a two toned deck with black walnut on the floor of the deck, what color would you recommend for the railings? A solid color? Thanks!
Sure that would work. Any color that you like.
I didn’t know if you recommend any particular color that would compliment the black walnut or look good with it as the second color?
Any color you like will work, that would be up to you. TWP does not come in solid colors so you’ll have to get that elsewhere.
What stain series in black walnut would be best for wooden shutters?
The Black Walnut only comes in the 1500 Series and would work just fine for wood shutters.
Can two colors of the SAME product (TWP 1500 or 200) series be mixed to achieve a different color? Can TWP 200 be used on fir tongue and groove porch flooring?
Yes you can mix colors of the same series. The TWP 1500 would be best for a porch floor.
