I have a new house built in Aug of 2024. The deck is made of weather treated pine. Do you have any photos of how the color Cabin Fever will look on pine wood? I’m hoping for a similar outcome to the way it’s pictured in the color chart.
We do not but we do have samples so you can test on your wood: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-stain-samples
Can I apply two coats of this?
If so, how? Wet on wet?
Yes, but it varies based on how porous your wood is. See PDS here: https://www.twpstain.com/pdf/TWP-PRO_SERIES_Semi-Solid_Product_Data_Sheet.pdf
Specifically:
Whatever your application method, the first coat should be applied to the point the surface is saturated. Spread any runs, drips or puddles with a brush. Allow TWP to penetrate for 15-30 minutes. If absorbed in that time period, immediately apply a second coat. If the first coat is not absorbed 30 minutes after the first coat is applied, a second coat is not recommended. Remove any excess stain 30-60 minutes after application of the final coat with a dry cloth, brush, roller or applicator pad. One coat is typically all that exotic and hardwoods can absorb. TWP that does not soak into wood and is not properly removed from the surface will form a shiny film, will remain tacky for an extended period, and will fail prematurely.
Where can I buy semi solid Pro Series at a store near southwest WI
We sell online only for shipping to your home.
Will the semi solid peel? Or will it age like the 1500 stain? What would match the 1520 pecan?
It is penetrating and does not peel as long as you prep and apply it correctly. The pecan does not have a matching color, so you would have to find something close.
Samples to test: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-stain-samples
Will semi opaque absorb on a cedar deck if I used 120 grit sandpaper or do I need to roughen it up with 80 grit sandpaper.
Yes, as long as you sand to a rougher grit of 60-80 and clean and brighten afterward. Just one coat of stain is needed.
Which semi solid stain is matching best with Trex saddle brown color?
Anyone having any experience of matching, I’m replacing the wood handrails and would like to have matching color with Trex boards.
Best to test a few samples: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-stain-samples
My deck (PT pine) is 8 years old and was stained 3 times with TWP100
I want to use TWP semi-soid pro-series this time
What would be the closest color to TWP100 dark oak ?
Use this for prep:
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit
Cabin Fever, Charcoal, or Foghorn. Nothing matches Dark Oak exactly.
Is stripping really necessary?
Yes. Very easy to do.
Any video on how to use RAD stripper?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eQhrVbOp_4
I was planning to stick with TWP100, so I only cleaned (oxiclean + power wash + rinsing – see picture)
Now, I’m really considering using TWP semi-solid to have a more uniform aspect
What are the risks to use TWP semi-solid if not stripped, knowing the previous coats were TWP100?
It could be an issue with adhesion or uneven application if prep is not done correctly.
No pic.
My deck (8 years old PT pine, stained 3 times with TWP100) need a new coat (it’s really washed out right now, to the point I’m not sure I need to use a stripper)
I want to use semi-solid TWP1500 this time
What is the closest color to the TWP100 Dark Oak?
Hi, I have an old Trex (or similar composite) deck on the front porch of the home I bought. It is a faded dark red. I would like to change the color of the decking, will this product be sufficient? Should I choose a cooler or greener toned color to neutralize the red? Also do you ship this to Connecticut?
Yes, you can use our semi-solid colors. You will need the VOC version for CT.
Is this product oil based or water based?
Oil-based.
How possible is it to use this on composite decking to change color to grey, from cedar. Also, can you ship to maryland?
The TWP Semi-solid currently cannot be shipped to MD.
Can the semi solid stain be applied over the semi transparent series 100 stain without removing the semi transparent? Thanks
Best to strip and brighten for prep when switching:
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
What is the closest semi solid color match to twp116, Rustic. Thanks
Since the Rustic 116 final color varies based on wood type and age, it is not possible to give a close match in the semi-solids. Look at Lighthouse, Redwood Forest, Heartwood, etc.
Hi! We were originally planning to use TWP 200 Butternut Brown on our fence. It is ~5 years old and previously had a clear coat on it, so there is some UV damage and discoloration. I am now considering using the semi-solid.
1. Which would be better?
2. If Semi-Solid is better, which color is closest to Butternut Brown and what is the color difference between them?
3. How long before we would likely have to restain with semi-solid vs TWP 200?
Thank you!
1. Semi-solid has better UV protection.
2. Since the Butternut final color varies based on wood type and age, it is not possible to give a close match in the semi-solids. Any of the brown tones should work for you.
3. You should get an extra 1-2 years of UV protection.
Thank you! Would the Cedar Mulch be a good option?
Cedar Mulch is tan, not brown but is a very nice color.
I have cypress siding that I finished 10 years ago with TWP Cedartone 101. I want to refinish it again and add other unfinished siding. I am planning to clean it with RMR 86 to remove mold and mildew in order to refinish it and I was thinking of using a semi-solid color for better protection. Where I live the temperature range is 0 to 90 degrees F plus or minus 5 degrees.
1) Will a semi-solid color be a better protection?
2) Can it be applied directly on the siding without sanding once it is cleaned?
3) Will there be a color difference between the new wood siding and the old wood siding?
1. Better UV protection.
2. You need to strip and brighten the older siding:
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Clean and brighten the unstained wood:
https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
3. Yes, new wood is less absorbent so it stains lighter in color. Semi-solid colors would even this out better than the semi-transparent.
Do not use RMR 86. You need to prep properly using the products we offer.
I have stained my deck for the past 10years w TWP stains. My deck gets 90+ temps all summer and I’m leaning toward paint this time…any suggetions
TWP does not come in a solid stain or paint. Look at the semi-solid colors for longer UV protection.
I have sanded down the deck and used some wood hardener (minwax) on a few boards. I do have a couple spots that need some wood filler. Is there a wood filler that works best and also what should I do before using the semi-solid stain?
No, you cannot use a wood filler with TWP (or any exterior wood stain) stains. It will not stain to blend.
What about the wood hardener? Would that cause an issue with the stain?
Sorry but never heard of a wood hardener so not sure what you mean. Do you have pics?
Yes
You cannot use an interior product for exterior wood and stains. We are not sure if this will harm the TWP or not. If the wood is still porous and the TWP can soak in, then it should be fine.
How prone is the Semi-Solid vs TWP 100? Does it soak into the wood like a traditional oil based stain or does it coat the top like other solid/semi-solids on the market? I don’t want anything that is prone to peeling.
It is a penetrating semi-solid stain, not filming.
I have older (8 years old) exterior stairs built with pressure treated wood (never stained or painted). Should I stain the underside of the stairs, please explain?
No need.
What is the UV protection rating on TWP Semi-solid pro series? Versus the UV ratings on the other series?
Hi. There is no such thing as a UV rating or a similar test for wood stains. The semi-solid being higher pigment will give UV protection than the semi transparent colors.
I’m looking at redoing these steps going from my garage into the house. I’m looking for something that can withstand water and snow, and is NOT slippery if it is wet. Thank you for any recommendations!
Strip and brighten for prep:
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Stain with the TWP Semi-solid in any color that you like.
I would like to distres the new porch to blend in with the 100 year old cabin can I burn the wood before using TWP semi transparent to help age it.
Yes.
We are wanting to stain our deck posts along with top rails with a semi solid stain and have applied the charcoal sample. Our posts are 6×6 greenwood pressure treated wood. Will we need to do any cleaning or prep work before staining them and only 1 coat is needed, right? See attached pictures.
It looks rough cut so go ahead and stain now as long as clean and dry. Post some pics in the contest when done: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-stain-2023-contest-win-cash
view of cleaned composite decking
You can test colors here: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Dear TWP,
Composite decking…18 years old…great shape…want to condition for first time…please advise.
Thank you!
MN 4 seasons
Clean first and then apply 1 coat of the TWP semi-solid colors.
Can you mix TWP99 Tint Base from the Semi-Solid Pro Series with TWP-100 Series Stains? And is the the TWP99 Tint Base available in New York State?
No, and both cannot be used or sold in NY.
Can TWP 1500 stains be mixed with Semi Solid Pro stains. I mixed a couple samples to get a shade I like but wanted to know if it will hurt anything by mixing.
It should be okay.
Can I stain right over my existing water based semi transparent stain which has been on for 3 years now and is very faded and starting to gray now?
No, you have to remove any prior stain coatings when switching stain brands. For help, post some pics in the comments.
I ordered 3 gallons of the weathered cedar but it looks exactly like the super cedar. Is there any color that I can mix with it to make it look less orange? Thank you.
You can intermix and of the TWP stain colors. Try a brown color.
2 questions…
1)can I apply TWP semi-solid over 4.5yr old TWP 100? Bare in some places after pressure washing.
2)what color is most similar to Pecan?
1. Strip and Brighten if switching.
2. There is not a matching color to the Pecan. Maybe Earth or Musket.

Hi Team, Cannot really tell by the color chart….what is the closest choice for light grey?
Colors will vary based on your wood type and the age of the wood. Try some samples of Driftwood, Seafoam, and Stonehenge to see if they work for you.

TWP Semi-Solid 1 Gallons are back in stock. 5-Gallons next week.
Can it be shipped to Ohio? Thank you.
The TWP semi-solid cannot be shipped to Ohio.
Hello, are there samples available to try out the colors? I am interested in both Cedar Chest and Seafoam Semi-Solid colors for my cedar fence. I appreciate any information. Thanks – Don
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Hi,
Thanks for the information. Sadly, I am not able to have the Semi-Solid Samples sent to Pennsylvania. Is there a Retail Store near Philadelphia that I can purchase the Samples? Any guidance is appreciated.
Thanks,
Don
Sorry but no, the semi-solid is not allowed in PA.
I read that this will work on older trex decking, is that correct?
Yes, it will!
Can I use semi-solid stain for a new deck? Do I need anything else to do the job?
Yes, after wait and prep: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Can I get the Mount Rushmore color in the 1 Gal. size?
Yes, just choose this as your color in the option on this page above.
Is the twp -99 (semi solid) a top coat or does it need a clear over the stain?
The semi-solid is not a top coat (it is a penetrating stain) and you cannot ever apply a sealer or top coat over the TWP stains.
Do you have any pictures of Cedar Post & Beams finished in semi-solid stains? I can’t seem to find an photos.
We do not but you can order samples to test on your wood.
Plan to use on small arched bridge over pond. Can non-slip be added? ( getting a little older)
No, you cannot add them to penetrating stains like TWP.
Can I apply the semi solid stain Mt. Rushmore color over top of cape cod gray? I am not sure I like the cape cod gray.
You need to remove it first. Use the RAD Stripper and Brightener.
I have a 20 yrs old deck. Clean every year with pressure washer but never sealed. Would like to use semi-solid earth tone stain. What else do I need to do before application?
As long as it is clean, you are good to stain.
Thank you for rapid response. Please find two photos of my deck. Will the semi solid cover these cracks or should I select another product?
That is not clean enough to stain. Use this kit while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
The stain does not fill cracks but the cracks are normal and the TWP will work fine after prep.
Did you just raise the price on the TWP semi-solid pro series stain from $250/5 gal to $275/5 gal?
No. It has been the same price since early 2021.
