TWP Semi-Solid Pro-Series 5-Gallon Deck Stain
If I use the semi solid stain on new pressure treated pine decking in full sun, how long before re-application needed, and can I just go over the original stain at that time or is some surface treatment required?
See this about new wood first:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Just clean and recoat as needed.
I have a deck that has been stained with TWP 100 stain that now needs to be stripped, brightened, and stain reapplied. I would like to go with the semi-solid stain vs semi-transparent and would like to know the color of semi-solid stain closest to the semi-transparent 120 Pecan color. Also, I assume I need to fully strip and brighten the existing stain before applying the semi-solid.
I’m sorry, but there are no matching colors, and since it is semi-solid, it will have more opacity. Maybe Musket, Earth, or Appalachian Trail would be somewhat close, but none will match the Pecan 120 color. Fully strip and brighten is correct.
What product would be appropriate for a boat dock? The wood is treated 2×6 pine that has been down for about 9 years. Another section on the dock only about 4 years and never stained. Which product would hold up the longest? I’ve used your 100 series on a covered deck, and it works great! I assume you have a product that would fit the needs of an exposed boat dock. Hot and humid with lots of sun. Thanks for your recommendation.
The semi-solid colors will work great in the full sun. Make sure to properly prep both areas prior to applying. If you want help with this, post some pics in the comments.
Thanks! I’ve attached some before pressure washing and after pictures. These boards are on a boat dock and fully exposed to the sun with the exception of a covered porch. Some are treated 2×6 treated about 9 years old. They were stained at the time of construction. Protection is long gone. The 5/4 decking boards are only about 5 years old, and have never been stained. Thanks for your input. I would like to purchase a product that will give me a few years of protection without having to re-apply every year.
If all the wood is clean now, then you should be ready to stain with the TWP. The semi-solid colors will give the best results in full sun.
Great! What is the shelf life of the product if you keep any leftover in climate controlled location? I’m not sure I would use an entire 5 gallons, but I would want to save for later use.
Opened 12 months. Unopened about 3 years.
Thanks! How long before I can receive product after completing an order? It would ship to 35769 zip code (Alabama)
3-4 business days.
How much longer will semi solid stain low voc last than 1500? What is the solids content in semi solid?
There is no way to generalize how much longer a stain will last in years, but the semi-solid will provide much better UV protection from fading. In theory, it can have twice the UV protection since it has twice the pigment, but there are other considerations when it comes to a stain’s longevity, such as wear and tear and overall weather. Overall solid content is not directly related to UV performance but how much pigment is in the stain.
I have just cleaned & pressure washed my cross buck fence after 4 years of TPW 100 cape cod. What would be the closest color to change to Pro semi solid, how much longer would it hold up compared to the TPW 100? Thanks
There is not a matching color in the semi-solids. Any of the gray colors would work well. The Cape Cod in the 100 Series is a semi-solid so longevity is about the same.
What color best matches Burnt Hickory from Cabot. Can your stain be applied over existing stained siding. How long will your pro series hold up before requiring re-staining. Do you offer discount prices on 100 gallon orders.
Sorry, but no idea as we are not familiar with Cabot colors. We do have samples for testing:
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
You cannot apply TWP or any other stain brand over a different stain brand. You will have to remove the current coating.
The TWP will last 5-7 years on siding, maybe longer.
We do not offer discounts.
My deck has old peeling solid paint. I plan on sanding the old paint off. Since some of the old paint will remain in the spots that cannot be easily sanded, is it still okay to use a semi-solid stain? See attached picture.
No, it has to fully come off if you want to use the TWP stains. You could use this to strip off where you cannot sand it off fully.
https://www.twpstain.com/rad-paint-solid-stain-strippers
I stained my deck yesterday, God was good & the weather was perfect! I used the semi solid “driftwood” and I absolutely love the color, even though it looks nothing like the chart but I did order a sample so I knew what I was getting! The chart makes it look like a tan, but this bad boy is gray with a hint of brown and I love it. I was needing a color to match my dirt when dry because I have a dog, that is on this deck more than I am, and she can be a muddy mess, the mud is still there but you just can’t see it with this color which brings me to my question. How long should I keep the muddy dog off the deck?
A few days for full cure.
Just finished re-staining after 5 years or so with 100 series Cedartone. Absolutely stunning just as it was the first time I used it. (Also used the Gemini cleaning brightening kit). Check out the finished product!
I live in Missouri around St Louis where the summers get muggy. Mildew is unavoidable on decks around here. It just happens after a couple years.
How can I routinely clean mildew without damaging the finish? Not sure if there’s a product or some methodology that you can share that would make this efficient and safe to the stain.
Thanks!

Hello, I have been using TWP 100 on our deck for 11 years. The color is Rustic 116. I would like to use either the 1500 or semi solid (this is preferred) for better protection. Do either of these products have the same or similar color? Thank you
Thre is not a same color in the semi-solid. There would be no advantage to switching to the 1500 Series over the 100 Series.
Thank you for your help.
Hello, we purchased a log home that hasn’t been cared for and at some point was painted green. Our current plan is to walnut blast and stain. The company doing the blasting recommend Messmers, I had been thinking Lovitts, and then someone recommended you. Which of your products would you recommend for this? Also, should we wait a certain amount of time after the blasting before staining? It is in central Wyoming. Thank you
Use the TWP 1500 Series or the Semi-solid colors. You can stain right after the prep.
Pro series is not yet on the comparison page (https://www.twpstain.com/twp-stain-comparison-reviews-ratings). As both have solids that protect against UV, what are the Biggest differences between the 100 and pro series?
They are both Pro Series. The TWP 100 Pro Series are semi-transparent colors. The TWP Semi-Solid Pro Series are semi-solids.
Semi-solids colors will give better UV resistance.
How would you recommend prepping before applying the stain? Thank you!
Post some pics of what you plan on staining so we can give proper pep advice.
Does Mount Rushmore have a greenish tint or more gray
Gray but does vary based on wood type and age of wood.
o I have 2,400± sq ft of pressure treated deck + wall/fence/uprights.
o It is 2 yrs. aged with no product applied.
o I will prep as you advise prior to application.
o I am going to use TWP Semi-Solid Pro-Series (Charcoal).
2 Questions:
(1) 1 coat or 2 coats?
(2) Gallons req’d / recommended?
Many thanks.
–> david.
2 light coats. About 20 gallons.
How can 2 coats be applied? I thought 1 coat prevents any spot fix/2nd coats from being absorbed and will result in a failed application. I assume this applies to 100 and pro series?
It is 1-2 coats for the semi-solid colors depending on how absorbent the wood is. If the wood is new then 1 coat should be sufficient
I have an almost year old new build deck that is covered. I’m curious which stain is going to last the longest in that situation…the 100 or semi solid?
also, if my deck wood is relatively clean. It doesn’t have the worn weathered look yet…could I get by without the cleaner brightener kit or should I still go ahead and use that?
thank you!
The semi-solid colors will give the longest UV protection. It has to be prepped, you cannot skip this step.
addition picture from Edgar Tarchalski
I have a older Trex deck built in 2004. Every year I lightly power wash it and apply a deck and mildew cleaner to remove stains and mildew. It looks ok when done but it barely last the entire year. I would like to do a good deck cleaning to remove the dirt and stains this spring then apply a good stain. Thinking I will need 5 gallons to apply one coat? Would it be ok to apply with a sprayer or would you recommend brushing or rolling? I will send you a couple of pictures the aprox. sq. footage is 560 sq feet or 37 feet by 15 feet.
You will need stain pads or brushes. Do not roll. One coat is okay. About 3 Gallons.
Hi, Our contractor applied (brushed) 1501 per the wet-on-wet instructions. We have channel cedar siding. It is taking a very long time to dry. There is some excess on the channel ledges too. How long will it take for this to dry? I have already gotten it on a pair of pants while reinstalling an exterior light. Thanks.
They most likely over-applied. Back wipe off excess stain if it does not fully cure within a week. See this for tips: https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-is-spotty-or-shiny/
that involves wiping the entire house.
If it does not cure then yes, you will have to do this. If it fully cures/dries, then no need.
We used Dark Oak previously, do you have that color in this Pro series?
No, not in the semi-solids. Cabin Fever or Charcoal is closest.
What is the difference between semi solid and 1500 series. How many coated do I need on a new deck
Thanks
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
TWP 1500 is semi-transparent.
I used your product about 15 years ago on my log cabin home, it held up incredibly well. I’m looking at using TWP Semi-Solid Stain for my re-covering this year. Is it still sprayable by an airless sprayer?
Yes.

I have new pine wood fencing (4-rail) about 300 ft long. It’s been 5 months now. Do I need any prep before I apply semi-solid? How many coats and gallons I will need? What is typical life of this pro series on fence in full sun (TN state)?
See here for new wood tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
We need a total sq footage for both sides to help with the amount needed. About 4-7 years for a fence.
Total surface will be about 1400 SQFT approx. How many coats and gallons will I need approx. if spray painting? Thanks
10-15 gallons for two coats applied wet on wet.
How much is shipping for 1 gal. cans of Semi-Pro to KCMO?
Depends on the address and zip code so best to add to the cart and then add a full address for the shipping cost.
Hello, we started staining our deck with the semi-solid in Mount Rushmore on 7/16, however did not have quite enough stain to finish one full coat. Went to purchase more and it has been out of stock. Wondering how we proceed when it is available again? Will we need to strip and start over or can we complete the small remaining part and give it a 2nd coat after?
Probably the latter but you may only need one coat. Send some pics.
Here are some pics.
We would suggest finishing with one coat where needed. If needed, next year lightly wash and apply another coat to all floors. Railings will be okay.
Hi…I was wondering if the Mount Rushmore is more brown than gray? I ordered a sample of Driftwood that the chart shows to be a tan/brown but it is GRAY! lol. I like it but wondered if the Mount rushmore may be more tan/brown than the driftwood is. Thanks.
Color varies based on wood type and age so it is nearly impossible to say exactly how it will look on your wood until you test a sample. Mtn Rushmore leans to gray.
I would say on new soft pine deck boards where driftwood looks gray, but in the bottle looks brown, it would be the more brown of the two? Does the sample bottle of Mt Rushmore look more gray? Thanks
More gray.
I am preparing to stain approx. 800sq ft of decking (almost 1200 when including railing and structural members). I plan to use the Semi-Solid Pro series. I have one deck that is in fairly poor condition (lots of sun exposure) and another that is in standard condition. Should I use 2 coats for the entire project or would the deck that is in better condition require only one coat of Pro Series? I purchased the home last year so I am not 100% certain when it was last stained. I do know that there was oil based on the deck previously. I believe it is standard decking, but there is a possibility that some of the deck is cedar.
All of the old stain needs to be removed first. After apply two coats wet on wet.
Hello,
Im trying to decide on what size of the semi-solid to purchase, once it is back in stock. I have multiple projects plan where I would like to use this as an outdoor sealer (benches, siding, etc) however they are all not ready as of yet. What is the shelf life of this product? If I bought the 5 gallon size to use for future applications, will I have any trouble with this degrading after opening? Thank you!
The shelf life of a 5-gallon pail after being opened is about 12 months.
We’re waiting to buy the TWP100 semi-solid stain which according to TWP website was supposed to be in stock mid-July (it’s Jul 20 and still OOS). I have 2 questions, please: how much is the 5 gal. semi-solid? And is it worth waiting for the semi-solid stain, or should we just use the readily available semi-transparent for a deck that’s in full sun? Thanks for your always prompt replies!
$274.95 per 5-gallon. It does give better UV protection when in full sun. We will not have it until August at some point.
Since all semi-solid colors are custom, is it possible to order a combination of heartwood and lighthouse (2 parts heartwood, 1 part lighthouse)?
No, it is not. You would have to mix that on your own.
???
Not understanding your comment. It clearly says we are out of stock for this one item and does not allow any new orders for this one item.
Most companies accept orders for “out of stock” items and advise their customers when item is returned to stock and shipment notification. Simply advising customers of an “out of stock” item leaves the customer frustrated exacerbated by TWP website that only states “out of stock” and no further information.
Actually no companies we know of take orders for out of stock items. That is common practice.
Taking someone’s money without knowing when we can fulfill “exactly” is unethical.
Website also stated above an approximate time of when we expect more.
No. Not down. As the page states the semi solid stain it is out of stock right now.
Recommend that you add notation to website clarifying that “out of stock” orders are not being accepted. “Out of stock” does not imply that orders are not being accepted. Why not accept customer orders and fulfill them when product becomes available?
???
It clearly says we are out of stock due to raw material shortages and does not allow you to order because of this.
We cannot accept orders that can add up to many 1000 of gallons without knowing when we will get products in stock. It would be unethical.
After applying this, fast forward a few years when it’s time to redo it… will you need to remove all the old stain or simply apply it again when it’s time?
Clean and brighten when time to redo: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I have a deck which is old and it has been about 3 years since Thompson’s seal was applied. Seems to have worn off by now. We have had to replace some boards. I see where you said new wood has to weather for at least 4 months before applying your semi-solid stain. How do I accommodate the old wood and the new. What would you recommend in this case and what type of prep?
After 4+ months, use the Gemini Kit on all the wood for prep.
What would be your most durable stain for a fence in Florida? I won’t have access to some sections after the fence is installed
The TWP semi-solid will give the longest UV protection of any of the TWP Stains.
I have twp transparent stain on my home, placed on 2 years ago. Can I go over it with a semi solid or what prep is necessary?
You will need to remove the current coating. How to remove depends on the brand, etc. Feel free to supply more info and some pictures for additional help with this.
It is TWP transparent cedar
This will easily prep it to remove while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I am staining our siding using TWP 1501 cedartone. we need to use 200 semi-solid on our deck to cover up a previous painter’s mistake that put on a solid. What color 200 would you recommend to match the 1501 on the siding? SuperCedar?
TWP 200 Series is not a semi-solid can you cannot apply any of the TWP stains over a solid stain. You would have to sand off the solid stain fully.
Thanks. If I get it sanded, what is the closest semi-solid color match to 1501? Thank you.
There is not one that matches. Best to try some samples to see which one you like.https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
I have a new pressure treated deck. I want to use TWP semi Solid stain. I am in Ohio. Can I use your Oil base stain? How long should I wait before applying?
You cannot use the TWP semi-solid in Ohio. You can use the TWP 1500 Series.
Read this for new wood help: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I have some outdoor fir posts that were covered with a marine varnish, and now have sun damage. How can I strip them to accept a TWP stain? Are the 1500 stains equally penetrating as the 100 series?
You cannot strip a marine varnish, you will have to sand it off.
Hi, what would be the closest to redwood 102? If between 2 colors, which one is more red?
Redwood Forest or Lighthouse
What’s the difference between the two colors? Is redwood just a lighter version of lighthouse? Or is one more purple/red while the other is more orange/red?
Colors will vary based on wood type and UV reflection so best to test some samples: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
What is the most efficient way to apply this product on a fence?
Pump sprayer and or brush.https://www.twpstain.com/deck-floor-staining-push-brush-detail
Luke the Chapin pump sprayer?
Correct. If you spray, back brush to ensure an even application and to catch any drips or runs.
I have a three year old solid stain on my deck. I have power washed deck and primed it. Can I apply the twp 1500 semi solid stain
No. You cannot use any of the TWP stains over a solid stain or primer.
I have and 8 year old deck just started pressure washing and cleaning after pressure washing what do i need to do before applying TWP pro semi-Solid super cedar
That would depend on if there is a previous stain on the wood or not? If so, then it will need to be removed.
nothing on it bare wood.
As long as the wood is clean and dry then you can stain.
thank you
after pressure washing how long should I give the deck to dry? Oh Alabama hot sun no rain.
48 hours.
stain my house in 1500 2 years ago with cedartone. now that you have semi solid i want to cover that up with it. my vertical siding is old and brittle and i don’t think it will survive another strip. can i go directly over without stripping?
No, you will need to strip and brighten for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
what will happen if i don’t strip and apply it anyway. my wood seems very hungry to be replenished. it doesn’t seem saturated with the 1500
You always have to prep when applying. By applying over the old TWP without proper prep can lead to drying issues, uneven color, and performance issues down the road.
can’t be any worse than hiring the clowns i did to apply it. i have lap marks all over the place and non blend wood filler
Wood fillers will never blend with deck stains and will not work on exterior wood anyhow.
Hi I’m currently using your restore a deck kit to clean up my huge exterior dogwood pine privacy fence. I have purchased your twp 1500 in black walnut for our deck previously with good results. My dogs just scratch it up.
For the fence, I’m not a fan of any of the twp 1500 colors for it. I love the color options for the semi solid stain. Would you say one is better than the other doe the fence as far as longevity? Or just personal preference with color choice?
Thank you – Taylor
Personal preference.
I’ve got a ~10 year old pine deck in NC, stained 2 years ago in TWP100. If I was reapplying TWP100, again, I’d just use the RAD cleaning and brightening kit, and topcoat.
Can I choose a similar color of TWP semi-solid, prep similarly with a clean&brighten, then top-coat with the TWP semi-solid? It might not be the most ideal, but would it work well enough? Or would it be a complete failure?
Trying to avoid stripping, since it never fully comes off — even though your stripping products are better than most.
Correct on the prep if using the same color and series as last time. If using the Semi-Solid colors, then strip and brighten for prep. It will remove the TWP with no issues.
Which color is closest to 1503 Dark Oak? Thanks.
Foghorn or Cabin Fever. Test samples here: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
We have a deck stained with Twp 100 series pecan. It is time to re-stain. We would like to switch to the semi solid stain. What color is closest to Pecon and what products do you recommend for cleaning and prep of the wood?

Best to get some samples to test the colors: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Matt, would you mind sharing which semi solid color you ended up going with? I also have TWP100 Pecan 9n my deck (stained 5 years ago).
Stained our 14 year old pressure treated deck 2 years ago (in GA) with 1515 Honeytone. Can I use semi solid this year? What prep is needed?

This page says “Coming early April,” but below your response indicates “March 2021.” When will the page open up for placing orders? Thanks for your help!
Early April.
how do I purchase this product? I live in Canada
It is not allowed in Canada. You can only use the TWP 200 Series there and we ship from our website: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
