I still need some help. The deck should be fine, easy to clean and re-stain. The question I have, is the board and batten PINE siding is ROUGH CUT AND VERY PORES. This would be nearly impossible to get rid of old product. I can pressure wash and let dry. Sanding and stripping would take weeks and change the appearance (rustic) of the house. Sorry to be a bother, please advise your thoughts are very appreciated.

Thank You Bill

We have a 2 year old cedar deck that is on a southern exposure. We’ve got Cabot 3000 on it, which didn’t last a year. I have completely sanded it and would like to use twp 1500 on it. Which color would give me the most natural finish, and do I have to prep the deck in any other way? Also, how long would should I expect the finish to last? We live in northern Wisconsin.

Wait a month or two before staining. Do not sand but use a wood cleaner and a wood brightener to prep. Do not use a wood filler!

As long as you clean and brighten the wood to prep you should be okay. If you have a lot of the old stain left then you should strip it off as well. Either the 100 or the 1500 would work well.

We just installed a pressure treated deck in NJ. Most of the deck is in full sun for 70% of the day. How long should I wait before staining? Do I need to sand before staining? Should I fill in small cracks in wood and spaced where wood joins before staining?

Thanks for your help. Also. 100 or 1500 for best performance?

hello: I built my pine board & batten home w/ceder deck 6 yrs ago. The deck is covered. The house & deck need to be refinished. The deck is very washed out, the house is better but still needs to be redone. I used a Valspar product originally but I don’t know if it was a oil or water based product. The customer service person @ farm & fleet said since it is that old I could use either. Is this true, please advise the best product. The TWP brand 100 or 1500? or is the a better brand.

Lattice is pretty absorbent so I would let dry fro a week or two then lightly clean. Light brown would probably be the Cedartone in the 1500 Series. It is a browny cedar color.

New cedar lattice privacy screen in San Antonio TX, morning sun, part shade in afternoon – how long do I wait to stain? Does the cedar have to be cleaned? Would prefer a light brown color to compliment Trex Woodland Brown deck- your suggestions please? thanks.

You should let the wood dry for at least a month or two then clean and brighten with the Gemini Restore A Deck Kit. Only one coat is needed for new wood. I would look at the TWP 1515 Honeytone for the lightest color.

We just completed installation of a new deck using treated pressure treated wood (tags on wood acquired through K-1 indicated Hixson Lumber, pressure treated using micronized copper azole). We want to stain with a more natural transparent product vs. any colors. Which series (100 or 1500) and product would you recommend. We live in Louisville, KY and deck gets full sun for 80% of the day. Also your comments on sealing the deck.

Do you have a comparable color to Minwax Provincial 211 stain? I want to use the TWP 100 on my new cypress garage carriage doors and the porvincial color seems to have a slight green tint to it when used on cypress that I really like. Thanks!

I would look at the TWP 1500 Series in Honeytone for the lightest color. No dealers but we can ship to you.

Hello – I just had a 670ft cedar deck built and I live in Washington state. I like a lighter color or not much color at all, don’t want deck to look orange! Which of your stains would you recommend 100 vs 1500? Also, do you have any dealers in the greater Seattle/Tacoma area? Hate to wait for a UPS shipment.
Thank you!!!!

The TWP 1500 would be best for the railings. No additional prep would be needed. 2 Gallons of stain should be enough.

I’m having a hard time figuring coverage…I have 85 feet of railing and 1.5″ square cedar spindles…any guesstimate on amount of stain I will need? Also, I have pressure washed the 9 year old railing…looks almost bare. Now I plan to sand rough spots then stain. Do I need to do any further prep before staining?
Lastly, is the 1500 series stain the best choice for western exposure, full sun deck in Washington state? Thanks!

TWP is an oil based stain while Storm Shield is a water based stain.

For new wood you should let it dry for at least a month then clean and brighten with the Gemini Restore-A-Deck Kit. Both series of TWP will work about the same. Only 1 coat for new wood.

Hello,

I live in Raleigh North Carolina. So, we have rainy springs, crazy hot summer, and occasionally a winter cold enough to get some snow and ice. I just got a new deck installed and the builder advised us to use TWP stain. the deck will be in direct sunlight most of the day. Any suggestions on which stain to use? Thanks so much!

You can use TWP to stain Trex decking.

I would use the Gemini Restore Kit to clean and brighten the wood then apply one coat of the TWP 1500 Series.

We have 3 month old pressure treated wood (#1) deck on NE side of house in Loudoun Co VA – how long to wait before treatment, what preparation should be done, and which series is best for this area?

No reason to stain all sides and in many cases that may cause issues. Best to install untreated then use the Kit after a couple of months to prep.

1500 has twice the solids then the 100. It may offer slightly better UV protection.

Thanks for the response on my earlier query. I have a follow-up. Do I have to use the Gemini Restore Kit on brand new Redwood (that has not even been installed yet)? I was planning on having each redwood board stained before they were installed. That way I can coat every side (would not be possible after installation). How do I use Gemini Restore Kit in my situation when I want to stain before installing the redwood planks?

Secondly, what is the difference between your 100 and 1500 series? Does one series have more solids? Is one series superior as far as durability, quality etc.? Thanks.

We are having a brand new redwood deck installed right now. I live in Colorado (elevation 5500 ft). Fair amount of snow in the winter. Summers are hot (90 to 100 degrees). Little or no humidity. Which stain would you recommend? TWP 100 series or 1500 or 500? Which of these series looks the best with redwood deck? By the way, what is the major difference between these series (other than VOC limits)?

And if it is a brand new deck, do I have any type of prep work before I put the stain? Thanks

I would use the TWP 100 for Michigan. Make sure to prep the deck with a deck cleaner and wood brightener first.

We installed an 8 x 30 deck made out of treated lumber [pine] in March, 2012 [4 months ago]. This is on the north side of our home in southern Michigan. It gets 1/2 sun; 1/2 shade. I see your TWP 100 is rated #1 and TWP 1500 is rated #3 in consumer reports. Which one would be the better product for us to use on this new wood? Sally

You should use both a wood cleaner and a wood brightener to prep the wood after the sanding.

I sanded my PT deck with 20 then 36 grit paper. Should I do anything else to the deck before staining for better penetration?

Hi,
I have a new deck that is mahogany deck with cedar wrapped rails.
Is there ONE stain/sealant that will bring out the natural color of each wood type? Or do I need to use two different stains?
Thanks,
Geoff

Unopened a few years. Opened, less then 1 year. All TWP Stains are semi-transparent.

What is the shelf life of the 100 series. I will probably not need the 5-gallon pail, but it seems to be the better deal.

Also – Do you have semi-transparent stains?

In Richmond, VA you have to use the 1500 Series ans the 100 is not compliant there.

Cal Red is a lighter red, Cedartone is a brownish cedar color, and Pecan is a little darker. Sorry but we personally do not have any dealers in your area.

You can use one stain for both wood types. I would look at the TWP 1500 Series in one of the lighter tints.

I have a 15 year old deck that has been properly cleaned and prepped for staining. I live in Richmond, VA and the deck is in full sun from 11am until 5pm every day. We have a lot of humidity in the Summer and above average rainfall throughout the year with mild snow every year or two. Which Series would be better for my deck – 100 or 1500? Also, I am looking at Cedartone, California Redwood or Pecan but it is almost impossible to choose a color from a website. Which color is darkest? Does California Redwood have a lot of red in it? Lastly, is there a retail store in Virginia that carries your products?

I am planning to re-finish a Redwood deck. We live in southern California and the deck is exposed to full sun and extreme heat (100+) most of the summer. Which of your products will be a better choice?

I just refinished my deck with 100 series honeytone a week ago. I did it 2 years ago and most of it was weathered off the wood within 1 year. Could I apply a coat of the 1500 series over the newly applied 100 series to make it last longer?
