We are sanding a 7 year old cedar deck in Northwest Washington. It had Penofin red label stain and turned dark, dark gray.
Do you recommend a product to strip hard to get to areas? If so, which one?
Do you recommend a cleaner and brightener after sanding?
What TWP stain do you recommend?
-Cheri
Strip and brighten for prep, no need to use the cleaner: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
No need to sand. Stain with the TWP 100 series.
Sand only, no chemicals
Sorry, Eric but you are incorrect. Stripping and brightening is the way to prep this. Sanding can reduce the TWP’s ability to soak into the wood fully. You want the wood as porous as possible for deeper penetration and longer life of the stain.
Which product do you recommend for 6 month old, pressure treated posts and railings on a 3 story apt. house in central Massachusetts?
You will need the TWP 1500 Series for MA. See this for new wood tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I wonder what application tools you would recommend, I have 30 6×6 pt posts and 900 balusters and railings; along with the fact that there are 3 floors to deal with. Brush vs roller, and what type of roller ?
Brushes or stain pads: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/application-tools/brushes-stain-pads
Rollers do not work very well.
We have a new pressure treated (pine) boat dock on a saltwater bay. What product do you recommend?
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
As for what stain to use, that depends on the state you live in?
I live in Texas
Use the 100 Series.
What stain for new redwood deck California
See here for new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the TWP 1500.
Hi I have purchased(3) gallons of TWP 300 series (clear) and need 2 more gallons to finish our deck.I live in Pittsburgh,Pa. and can not find the 300 clear online any more either…any suggestions.??
I am sorry but we do not sell the TWP 300 Series form our website.
Just installed brand new deck, kiln dried siberian larch, what stain should i use
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Where do you live?
upstate ny,
You will need the TWP 1500 for NY.
Live in Michigan had surface of deck replaced with pressure treated last October approximately 1500 SQFT. Love your stains, what product is best and how many gallons?
Prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Stain with one coat of the TWP 100 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
I should add the house is 14 years old – if it was ever stained/sealed it was probably only done when constructed and not since.
I just bought a log cabin in the mountains of NC – 4500 ft elevation so harsh environment. The logs are in great shape but the exterior finish is not. It’s hard to tell if it was ever stained/sealed – if so, I have no idea what was used. Couple of questions:
1. Which, if any, TWP product is best for this application?
2. How should the house be cleaned/prepped?
3. Can you stain over chinking, then go back and repaint chinking grey? If so, what paint would adhere to the new stain? If not how should I go about this – just stain around the chinking?
4. What product do you recommend to fill checks in the logs? Before or after staining?
5. What is the recommended application technique for log houses given the situation discussed above?
Thanks!
-Dave
1. TWP 1500 Series.
2. Would need to see pictures.
3. You cannot paint over the TWP, the paint may not adhere. Best to stain around the chinking.
4. Do not fill checks. Just leave as is. Filler will not work or blend with the sain.
5. Stain pads or brushes.
I live in St. Louis MO. Am getting new teak out-door furniture delivered tomorrow. What product do you recommend- 100 vs 1500? Or?? Is much prep work needed; sanding, sealing, pressure washing?
Thanks- Wes Berg
Use the 100 series after wait and prep. See here for new wood tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Prep first with what?
https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Can I apply TWP 100 directly over TWP 100 that has been applied 2 years ago?
Prep first with this.
Hello, looking for best option for 2 year old Sienna Brown pressure treated deck. Never coated with anything else just the brown pressure treatment. A few spots of mold and mildew. Should I do 100 series or 1500? Also I’m in Canada, is there a shipping charge?
For Canada, you would need the TWP 200 Series. The 100 and 150 are not allowed there. Yes, you have to pay the shipping to Canada.
I have power washed and sanded my deck, but there are places where the pine sap is oozing out. It gummed up the sander a few times. Can I just stain it? I plan to power wash it again when I get done sanding. I think I want to use a gray stain, what color do you recommend? I live in Missouri.
You can stain over the sap but when the sap dries it will be white in color. The gray colors will work.
I think the deck is at least 3-5 years old, not sure because we just moved here. Should I do 2 coats of Cape cod gray? And do I need to use a cleaner on it if I power washed it? How long does it need to dry after power wash before staining?
Just one coat of the Cape Cod Gray. Use the Gemini Restore Kit for prep. Wait 48 hours to stain
Let it dry out longer until sap stops
I’m in Massachusetts and this is a PTP deck that has dried for a year. Do we need to put 2 coats on? Trying to figure out the order since we have to ship it. Concerned about only getting enough for one coat then a delay of getting more if we need a second coat. Also should we go with 1500 series
Two coats wet on wet. Use the 1500 Series.
We have a cedar deck and arbor structure that was built 20 years ago. Last time it was stained was probably 15 years ago. I just replaced several floor boards (new wood) and sanded the entire deck and overhead structure up from 60 grit to 100 grit. How long after sanding should I wait before I apply TWP1500 (we live in California)? Should I follow the instructions at https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/?
Yes, follow those directions.
I live in CA. What does using 1500 vice 100 cost me in terms of performance and application?
They last the same and apply the same.
Why do you always recommend 100 vs 1500 to people in non-VOC states?
No, not always. Mostly because it is less expensive but there are scenarios where the TWP 1500 would be preferred such as cedar siding.
Finally stained our deck and steps with TWP 1500 Dark Oak – Looks great and I will post a picture. What is a good complimentary TWP color for the posts and handrails?
Maybe Pecan or Honeytone.
This is a silly question because this is a TWP stain site, but is there a stain that comes close to TWP? Just curious. Thanks.
Nope.
I live in Ontario, Canada. Looking to stain a 100′ deck, railings etc. Which twp line is best. Full Sun, no moisture issues.
Only the TWP 200 is allowed for Canada: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
I love in S. Idaho with a few 100 deg days and a couple of months of freezing temps
I have a new red cedar outdoor sauna. Which of your products do you recommend for the exterior?
TWP 100 Series.
Hi,
I am ready to restain my deck. Previous owner applied cabot semi solid oil based stain. I want to keep the color same. Can you please suggest the color, twp100 or 1500 and any pre steps i need to follow.
Thankd,
Amol
You cannot use the TWP over this. You would have to sand it all off first.
Thanks…will paint stripper work. Or it has to be absolutely sand off?
You will need to sand it off.
What about Cabot water based? Can TWP 100 be applied over that? (Deck is two months old and we are SO not happy with Cabot water-based)
No. You cannot apply TWP over a different brand of stain.
Which of your products do you recommend for pine fence in south Texas full sun?
TWP 100 Series.
I used Redwood TWP 100 5 years ago to stain my new Log Home. I have had good performance and want to use the Redwood again but afraid it will be too dark. Any suggestions? TWP is a great stain. It’s a good value!!!
Just prep with the Gemini Restore Kit and stain with the same color.
Hi, I am in Oklahoma and we just installed rough cut cedar post. Can we stain immediately and does it need to be prepped? Also are there any place to buy in Oklahoma city?
We sell online. You can stain it now.
Can you tell me which color would best match this?
Cedartone 101.
I have an 20+year old deck we have used Thompsons water sealer on in the past. Last year I stained it as will with their tinted water seal. I live in Central Oklahoma. One deck is full sun all day. The rest are covered. What do you recommend to clean and which series is best to protect?
Post a picture of current condition. Thanks
Forgot to include the photo… here it is.
The TWP 100, 200, or 1500 Series will not work on Bamboo.
I have a bleached bamboo fence that I wish to keep the same color. It screens the AC units so is outside. I have stained the wood with a Sherman Williams weather proof stain. Please advise correct non-coloring sealant. Thanks
I have a new red cedar deck and would like to keep the color or close to it. Will the Natural or Cedartone darken the wood? If so how much and are they both UV protection?
Honeytone is the lightest tint. See pictures here: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
I have a fence that has been previously treated with Penofin (mistake I know). I think the 100 series would be better since my state allows it. What do you recommend? Do I need to do anything before adding the new stain?
Strip and brighten for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
So, I have to strip (and brighten) before I can stain? Not just strip? ?
Yes, strip and brighten.
I have a three year old pressure treated deck and pergola with no stain currently. We live in Kansas, hot summers and cold winters. Do you recommend TWP100 or TWP 1500 series? Pros and cons of each?
Prep with this and use the TWP 100 Series for KC: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Old deck but pretty good shape. I used defy deck stain 2 years ago for the second time. The color is quite worn now. Stains don’t last as promised, likely due to fcold winters in New York Adirondacks, frequent below zero temps in long winters.
What do I need to do to use the TWP? Will it last longer as it is an oil base?
Use the RAD stripper and remove all the Defy. Brightener after. About every 2-3 years.
Which series would you recommend for rainy Seattle weather for a cedar deck that was built in August 2019. How many gallons do I need for a 15’x19′ deck? Additionally, do I need to use a deck brightener before staining (i will be using a deck cleaner). Thanks!
100 Series. Clean and brighten for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
About 2-3 gallons.
I only need one coat since it’s a new deck, correct?
Yes.
Excellent. Should I add a second coat after the first year? If so, I think I will go with the 5 gallon kit. Thanks!
Yes.
My deck looked great right after cleaning and brightening when still wet. It is now the next day and I see a bunch of wood fuzzies on my deck. What should I do prior to applying the 100 series stain? Thanks!
That should go away when stained but if you want, you can lightly sand with 60-80 grit.
The wood is rough right now, will it get smoother after staining without sanding? If I go the sanding route, should I re-clean and re-brighten before staining?
Thanks!
it is better to be slightly rough when stain as the TWP will soak in better. TWP is a penetrating stain. You really do not need to sand nor should wood be overly smooth.
That’s good to hear. To confirm, it will get smoother after I stain? It’s pretty rough to walk on right now. Thanks for your help throughout this process!
No, it does not get smooth as TWP soaks in, not films on top. It does help to harden the wood though at the surface.
What would you recommend for Calgary, Alberta, Canada weather? And how many gallons for a 12×10 area?
The TWP 200 series. 1-2 gallons.
We just replaced the top of rails and floor decking on our back deck. The spindles were stained with Cabots Australian Oil but have been sanded down. How long until we should stain this new wood and what product do you recommend? We live in North Carolina and we have neighbors who recommend TWP 200 yet I notice it is not promoted for decks. I am really struggling on which stain to use and what are the pros and cons? 100, 200 or 1500? Our criteria is for ease of application, looks good, but most importantly long lasting and protects the new deck. What would work the best? Thanks for any guidance you can give.
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 100 Series.
Ready to seal/stain a brand new cedar deck. We are in Nashville TN. What are your recommendations for the best product and application for holding up in cold winters and humid summers? thanks!
See this first. https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
After wait and prep. Use the 100 series.
My 20-yr old deck was pressure washed with bleach and water last week. It was originally stained when first built by the builder, but has not been stained in at least 8 years, only pressure washed 2-3 times in the past before this fourth time. It is treated wood (pine) and gray. Do I need to use any additional cleaner/brightener and can I use the TWP or do I need to go with a solid stain? If TWP, the 100 or 1500? Also, how long after it’s rained can I stain the deck? Thank you!
Clean and brighten for prep with the Gemini Restore Kit. Use the 1500 Series. What for 48 hours after rain or prep to stain.
We are getting ready to restrain our house for the very first time. The sun hits the front of it all day, so it is faded and will absorb more than the rest of the house. What series do you recommend we use? And the color is darker than we like, so we’re hoping a lighter stain will help with the color. Any suggestions appreciated.
Need pictures of the current condition and whee are you located.
We live in Duffield, VA. The lighter picture is how the wood looks in the front where the sun hits all the time. The darker ones are the side and back. The last picture of the front of the house is when we first stained it. The wood siding is Southern Pine.
That is a solid stain in the first picture. TWP cannot be used over this and you would have to power sand to remove.
Thank you
Many years ago I use 201 on my older cedar siding. What product do you recommend I use to stain my cedar siding? Also, should I apply one or two coats as I have not stained the house in 5 years.
Use the same. Prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
The wood is slightly darker. I used a 201 last time. Can I use 200 and still get UV protection? Also, should I apply two coats. I pressured washed the siding and used trisodium phosphate to clean…is this okay?
Why do you recommend the 100 for a new deck if the 1500 is new and improved? We have a new, pressure treated pine deck, seasoned for approximately 1 year and ready for stain. We also live in Texas. Thank you.
Better penetration with the 100.
So it is ok for a new deck even though the website’s instructions for prepping a new deck say use 100?
Typo in previous reply. 100 penetrates better.
I stained my deck last year and thinking of an additional coat this year. Too soon, and if not what cleaner just for dirt before reapplying?
If you add a maintenance coat you will need to use the Gemini Restore Kit for prep. Only do it if needed.
I stained my heart redwood deck 5 years ago right after I built it with California Redwood TWP1500. Can I just clean and brighten without stripping if I use the same stain again?
Yes.
Ok thanks. How long after cleaning and brightening do I have to restain typically? Is it within days, or weeks?
Stain within 2 weeks of prep.
Post application pics.
I applied 102 Redwood two yrs ago to red wood deck. Need to restrain. Do you still make this 102.?
if not, what is equivalent. Colorado.
Yes the TWP 100 Series is still made: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
We installed a pressure treated deck in upstate NY last fall. We will be ready to stain the deck in 1-2 months after we clean and allow dry time. We don’t like red or orangy stain colors. If we like the early american and special walnut colors from minwax – what stain color do you recommend and do you have any pointers.
Thanks!
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
As for colors, try some samples. You will need the 1500 for NY: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
A photo album is here: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
We purchased a home that used TWP 205 on the deck and pergola. Should we stay with the 200 series or use the 1500 series? We are located in Atlanta Georgia.
Staying with the 205 is the easiest thing to do.
Last year I applied an application of Defy Extreme it didn’t cover well. I going to switch to TWP product. What do I need to do? What do I need to do first? Jim
You need to remove the Defy. Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
With both additives: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives
Stripping a 20yr old Pressure treated Pine deck and Cedar picket fence(I think). Will be using your RAD stripper / brightener. This is in Missouri I am thinking I should use 1500 since it has a higher solids. Am I thinking correctly? Considering Pecan tint.
Yes, that would be correct!
2 YEARS AGO I APPLIED A SEALER/ CEDAR STAIN (ADM 2003) AN OIL BASED PRODUCT, THERE IS NO CRACKING OR PEELING ON SURFACE OF DECK. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE USING TWP 1500?
You will need to remove it first. Use the RAD Stripper and Brightener Kits: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I stained my deck last summer with Defy Extreme Clear. Some areas didn’t get covered real well. Can I reapply another application of clear right away?
The TWP cannot be applied over the Defy. The Defy would have to be stripped off fully first.
