We are sanding a 7 year old cedar deck in Northwest Washington. It had Penofin red label stain and turned dark, dark gray.

Do you recommend a product to strip hard to get to areas? If so, which one?

Do you recommend a cleaner and brightener after sanding?

What TWP stain do you recommend?

No need to sand. Stain with the TWP 100 series.

Sorry, Eric but you are incorrect. Stripping and brightening is the way to prep this. Sanding can reduce the TWP’s ability to soak into the wood fully. You want the wood as porous as possible for deeper penetration and longer life of the stain.

I should add the house is 14 years old – if it was ever stained/sealed it was probably only done when constructed and not since.

I just bought a log cabin in the mountains of NC – 4500 ft elevation so harsh environment. The logs are in great shape but the exterior finish is not. It’s hard to tell if it was ever stained/sealed – if so, I have no idea what was used. Couple of questions:
1. Which, if any, TWP product is best for this application?
2. How should the house be cleaned/prepped?
3. Can you stain over chinking, then go back and repaint chinking grey? If so, what paint would adhere to the new stain? If not how should I go about this – just stain around the chinking?
4. What product do you recommend to fill checks in the logs? Before or after staining?
5. What is the recommended application technique for log houses given the situation discussed above?

Thanks!

1. TWP 1500 Series.
2. Would need to see pictures.
3. You cannot paint over the TWP, the paint may not adhere. Best to stain around the chinking.
4. Do not fill checks. Just leave as is. Filler will not work or blend with the sain.
5. Stain pads or brushes.

Old deck but pretty good shape. I used defy deck stain 2 years ago for the second time. The color is quite worn now. Stains don’t last as promised, likely due to fcold winters in New York Adirondacks, frequent below zero temps in long winters.
What do I need to do to use the TWP? Will it last longer as it is an oil base?

it is better to be slightly rough when stain as the TWP will soak in better. TWP is a penetrating stain. You really do not need to sand nor should wood be overly smooth.

No, it does not get smooth as TWP soaks in, not films on top. It does help to harden the wood though at the surface.

I am really struggling on which stain to use and what are the pros and cons? 100, 200 or 1500? It is treated wood (pine) and gray. Do I need to use any additional cleaner/brightener and can I use the TWP or do I need to go with a solid stain? If TWP, the 100 or 1500?
