I have 3 pressure treated deck that were installed in October 2020 I will pressure wash them first,

I have lots of well-weathered older decks and one dock, all previously stained with TWP101 Cedar Tone Stain many years ago. I like the transparency of the TWP 100 series. Could you compare the relative difference in transparency between the 100 series and the 1500 series using words that a dummy might understand? I have noted the difference in solids between the 100 and 1500 series is approximately 100 percent.
Does low VOCs mean more solids, less penetration and less transparency?
How does the penetration compare between the two? Which one do you expect to last the longest and by how much? And lastly, what is so new and improved with the 1500 compared to the 100 and why do you not provide a cheaper price per gallon for 5 gallon versus 1 gallon purchases? The transparency between the 100 and 1500 is exactly the same. No difference.
The 100 will penetrate slightly better. They both last about the some before recoating is needed. The 1500 will give slightly better UV protection. 5 gallons ship free otherwise the pricing is the same compared to 1 gallon to 5 gallons when 1 gallons are x by 5. No discounts based on quantity.
I live in Jackson, Mississippi. I live on a lake and have a wooden seawall and dock that were built in 2007. In 2020, I put new wood on the top of the dock and installed new vertical boards in the seawall and put a new “cap” on top of the seawall. A photo is attached. I want this wood to last as long as possible. Should I use the same stain on the seawall and the dock? What stain(s) should I use? Do I need to condition or prep the wood? Is there any benefit to treating the bottom side of the boards on the dock? Thank you in advance!

Stained old neglected elders last fall twp 100 honeytone. Floors faded out a lot over winter. Did I not do enough coats? Should could I pressure wash and re coat?

We are in Georgia. Deck and fence are about 20 years old and we have used the same crew the entire time to clean/stain everything pretty regularly. They are no longer around but I know they always used TWP 200. Should we use 100, 200, or 1,500? If not 200, why? If continue with 200, why?

Both last about the same but the 100 Series will penetrate newer wood slightly better. You can use either in GA.

Where are you located?
Your comparison above between 100, 200, 1500 series products indicates that 1500 is “Best!”, however most of your recommendations in the comments are to use the 100 series products when available in those states. Why is that? Also, given that the 1500 series product has more solids by volume, does that give it better UV protection?
The 100 Series is able to penetrate better especially on newer wood. The UV protection is slightly better on the 1500 Series compared to the 100 Series but penetration can outweigh UV protection for newer wood.
I am building a deck with freshly milled new cypress wood, with 8-12% moisture. I live in Mobile, Alabama, so sun and humidity are normal. I plan to stain with penetrating oil base twp-semi-solid-pro-series 105 Cape Cod Gray. Vintage Woodworking STRONGLY recommends staining the wood before constructing the deck. That is contrary to TWP instructions. Is it necessary to age cypress before staining?

80% of our deck is new pressure treated lumber. The remaining 20% is old pressure treated lumber stained with TWP cedartone. I’m interested in staining with TWP 1500 sea foam. Do I need to sand off the existing cedartone color, strip it, or can I stain over it?

Hi. Recently bought my house. Deck is pressure treated lumber. 25 years old. I sanded off old stain and paint and power washed what leftover white paint is in picture. I live in CT. What should my next steps be and which of your products should I use?

I live in Michigan. I bought a cabin that was stained using 1500 in Rustic color right before I purchased last year. I don’t like the color as it seems too red for my taste. I’d like to restain with Dark Oak. After 1 year can I just go over the Rustic 1500 with Dark Oak? Which would you recommend for the restraining – 100 or 1500? I also have a shed shed that is sided with western red cedar shingles that were pre dipped in Superdeck 1900 before installation. The shingles are 6 years old and need to be re stained. This looks like mold to me. Same thing happened to my deck when I applied a different deck stain, but didnt clean the wood first.

Agreed. appears to be dirt, and practically comes off when scrubbed with a soft brush. It also seems to have concentrated in areas where the water beads when the deck is wet from rain. this is also a recent occurrence, beginning almost a year after the deck was stained. For the first 10-11 months the deck looked great. then all of a sudden it didnt look great.

I have a four year old cedar deck in Iowa. I have applied a coat of competitor’s semi-transparent stain each of the last two years. I have scrubbed the deck with a combination of oxy-clean and Dawn and am nearly finished sanding to remove most of the remaining orange-looking cedar stain. What do you recommend as my next step? Wait until Spring to give cedar a chance to weather for better absorption or stain yet this Fall? Should I use TWP 100 or TWP semi-solid? We want the deck to have a rich light brown color instead of an orange cast and prefer that it last several years. Suggested color?

I have to restain a fence, gazebo and shed that were previously stained with Olympic Elite cedar-colored semi-transparent, oil-based stain. Olympic Elite is not currently available due to supply-chain problems. Which of your stains would be best for this application and can I apply a darker color without having to strip? Have a problem with staining my older deck @ a rental home. My tentant stained with TWP100 I supplied but he only gave it one coat–it needed two-that was a few days ago. Can I go ahead & give it a second coat now?
It may not take now as seconds coats have to be applied wet on wet. Applying another coat now could result in over application issues.

No advantage to using the 100 or 1500. They both work the same. You should not mix different series together.

I am building a new house in Tennessee with rough sawn cedar accents & posts on the outside and cedar beams on the inside. I like the cabin fever and weathered cedar in the semi-solid stain. I have been using the the 100 series on my Log home for over 12 years including the original application. It looks and works great!! Why doesn’t TWP advertise more as a great product for log home applications? It is a much better product than the over-priced stains you see in the Log and Timber publications? I have used both and trust me TWP is not only better but a much better value.

I just stained half my deck with semi-solid super cedar and we think it looks way too orange, especially on CCA treated boards. It looks a little better and darker on the cedar boards I have. Is there a better color, still in the cedar family? Maybe cedar mulch,cedar chest,autumn foliage, or heartwood? Can you just stain one of these right over it? I really do not want to strip it all. It looks good, just not liking the orange.
Colors will vary based on the wood type and age of wood so there is not a way for us to say what is “better” in what would be your personal preference of color. You would have to remove it if you want to switch.
This is a picture of the ceiling on my porch. I was told this was twp and it was a mixture of 2 stains. Can you tell from this picture what it might be?

My deck finishing contractor gave me color recommendations for finishing my new deck. One is a blend of (TWP 200/100) Butternut/Dark Oak; One is TWP 200 Butternut; And the Third is a TWP 200/100 blend of Russet Brown/Rustic. Of the three, which one would be the best for UV protection? The first option is the darkest if that makes any difference

It can be sprayed but you will need to back wipe it for a uniform application. Clean and recoat as needed.

We just installed a new dock on the lake using pressure treated marine grade pine in N Carolina. Trying to research the best stain/sealer to use. I have found several brands that claim to be the best but have not found a good solid review for stain used on docks. Your site says not to sand but I have read that I should sand first after waiting at least 3 mos for the wood to weather. Help please!

The 100 will work best for NC, You cannot apply a sealer over a stain like TWP. No need.
Ok great! I’ve read a few comments about how your stain makes the walking surface slick. Will it make the dock too slippery to walk on coming in and out of the water?
TWP is a penetrating stain, it does not make it slick.
