Jim, I would prep the wood with the Gemini Restore Kit then re stain with the TWP 1516 for a slightly longer life.
I live in Michigan and have white pine log siding on my house. it was stained in 2009 with TWP 116-1. There is black appearing in several areas. What should I use to clean and which stain would work best.
After you sue the stripper you should use a wood brightener to neutralize. Once the Behr stain is gone, you can apply the TWP.
I live in Charlotte, NC, and am sanding off a flaky Behr finish with 80 grit orbital sander. The wood is pressure treated pine, is 6 years old and in good condition. I plan on using a light stripper to get some of the previous pigment out of the crevices. What finish and other prep procedures do you reccommend?
For NJ you must use the TWP 1500 as the 100 is not compliant there.
live in princeton, nj – a 2 level deck (all in all 650 ft) – lower part is old wood (hasnt been stained in years) – upper deck is engineered wood and hasnt been stainied in a while – which way to go 100 or 1500? thanks

Yes newer wood needs to be prepped with the Gemini Kit then stained with just 1 coat for the first time.
We have a 1600 sq foot pressure treated pine porch that needs to be stained. It wraps around the house, so it has both northern and southern exposure, sun and shade. We live in Iowa, so there will be snow. Would the 100 or 1500 work best? Also, we built it 5 months ago, would it still be considered “new” wood and only need one coat? Thank you!
WGJACKSON, Both the 100 and the 1500 can be used in Georgia. You would need to remove the OneTime first with a stain stripper such as the Restore-A-Deck Stripper followed by a the Brightener.
IS THE TWP 100 SERIES AVAILABLE FOR GEORGIA YET? IF NOT, HOW WOULD THE 1500 SERIES PERFORM ON A 10 YEARS OLD DECK LAST CLEANED AND STAINED WITH “ONE TIME” SEVEN YEAR CHESTNUT COLOR. IT DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. MY DECK SPLIT AND PEELED IN 6 MONTHS.

Which TWP series is best for my new (8 month old) 450SF pine deck near Houston? The deck has a eastern exposure and is halfway under a mature oak tree.

You can use either depending on your state VOC laws. Only 1 coat for Mahogany wood. Due to your wood type, Mahogany needs to be reapplied more frequently then woods such as cedar and pressure treated pine.
I have a mahogony deck which is two years old an d has been stained only once thusfar. Which of you products should I use? The 100 or the 1500 product, and is it available for a mahogony deck.
The Storm Shield is being discontinued so I would stick with the 1500.
I am building a deck in southeast Indiana using WRC and was about to order a couple different samples of TWP 1500. I then saw that you carry a waterborne stain called Storm Shield. It is new to me and I can’t find it in any comparisons on your site. I PREFER working with waterborne but I do not want to sacrifice quality. Any comparisons or user reviews of Storm Shield vs TWP 1500?
TWP 1500 is a low voc stain that is used for all states while the 100 can be used on 30 some states. The 1500 has a higher solid content. I would get some samples to test out first. If the wood is “rough” and not smooth, it can be stained right away.
Just build western red cedar fence, low grade, lots of knots. Central Oregon, very dry climate, lots of sun, cold winters. Which is better for this climate……TWP 100 or 1500? Color is important to me…no orange tones. I do not understand the difference between TWP 100 and 1500. Thanks!
You should always follow the advice of the stain manufacturer, not the lumber co. Best to let it weather for 6+ months, clean and brighten to prep, then apply 1 coat of the TWP.
I’m getting conflicting advice on how best to stain a new deck. The lumber co. is saying to seal right away even before actual construction. I’ve read on several websites that it’s best to let the deck “cure” for anywhere between 1-12 months. We are using Douglas Fir and am planning to use 1500 series TWP stain (I live in California). What is best? Sealing/staining first or building, curing then staining?

You can use stripper instead of cleaner if you want. Strippers do need to be neutralized with a wood brightener. Wood brighteners need to be pumped sprayed on they cannot be applied with a pressure washer.
Thanks! Have a couple follow-up questions: If I use stripper instead of cleaner on the log cabin, can I/should I use stripper on the small sections of new wood too? I will need to follow up the stripper with brightener correct? Finally, is the brightener power sprayer safe like the stripper? Just bought the power sprayer and don’t want to ruin the pump.

Yes that should work unless you have an old stain that needs to be removed with a stain stripper instead of a wood cleaner. New wood will not match older wood exactly when stained. It will be close as long as you prep well.
Planning on restaining our South Dakota log home this summer. 4 years since last stain. We have pine logs on bottom and pine log siding on top half of house. We recently added on, so now have both new and old wood on east side. Here is my plan: clean and brighten the entire house then use 2 coats (wet on wet) of Cedar Tone 1500. A litle concerned about ability to match color on addition. Good plan?

You can use TWP for exterior doors but this is a penetrating stain. It will not leave a shiny coating as most doors have.
We personally do not have retailers there but we can ship to you. Honeytone color would probably be closest.
I have a cabin in Montana near Bozeman/Livingston. I have recently installed Knotty Alder exterior doors. Being covered they are mostly shaded and rarely get wet, however temperature changes in Montana can be extreme between night time lows and day time highs. Also humidity is low especially in the summer.
I have 3 questions:
1) Can TWP 1500 seems to typically be used for decks and sometimes siding, can it be used for exterior doors?
2) What will be the color choice that best matches a rich light bronze color?
3) Is there a retailer in the Bozeman or Livingston area?

It really depends on how well you close the lid from evaporation. If closed with no evaporation then it will be okay for Spring.
What is the shelf life of TWP 1500 stain in a 5 gallon bucket? I want to stain my cedar rails and outband of the deck now (before i put the rails up) and stain the PT deck in the spring.
Not much but the 1500 is a little richer in color.
Is there a difference in color between the 1500 Dark Oak and the 100 Dark Oak?
Yes you can mix TWP colors together for a custom color.
Can you mix two different colors of the 1500 stain?
One coat on newer wood. TWP suggests waiting 4-12 months before staining new wood. I would wait until Spring then clean and brighten to prep before staining with the 100 Series.
I have just finished a new 650 sq. ft. PT Deck w/ cedar rail/rail posts in North Georgia. 150 sq. ft. is in a covered porch and the remainder is outside but gets very little sun exposure due to facing west and shaded by a large Oak tree. Which stain should I use 100 or 1500? How much do I need and is it 1 or 2 coats? Any suggestion on color to use for the cedar and pine to match the best?
You would want the TWP 1500 for this deck in Mass.
I have a 20 year old PT deck in Massachusetts. We’ve pressure washed it and are looking to seal/protect it from the harsh weather. What is my best bet to use? Deck does get a lot of sun but not full and dots get some greening near the house where it does not get sun.
TWP 1500 is compliant for NY while the 100 is not. All new wood should weather for 4-12 months before TWP is applied. You will need to prep with a wood cleaner and a wood brightener prior to staining. The Gemini Restore-A-Deck Kit will work. Only 1 coat on new wood.
we have a pressure treated wood deck, and are getting ready for its first stain. It was installed in June, and we live in upstate NY. The deck has eastern exposure, so sun during the day, and of course the cold winters. What do you recommend? We are leaning towards the TWP 1500.
It is probably the way the wood is taking the stain. You do not want to over apply the stain. Too much stain and it will not penetrate into the wood. This may cause premature product failure.
I’m working on a deck project with the TWP 100 stain (rustic). I’m using 2 coats on fairly weathered wood. In a few places, once dry, it looks much lighter, like it isn’t coated enough; perhaps those boards are more weathered. Now that it’s dry, can I go back and put on an additional coat?
I’m already planning on triple coating everything as I go forward, cleaning up anything that doesn’t soak in.
TWP cannot be ordered and shipped into Canada. It is not compliant. By shipping to a US address and bringing it across the border you are technically breaking the law.
I am surprised that you say it is not compliant in Canada because there was no problem ordering it in Canada. It is only that the shipping costs we high so I got it delivered for free at a US warehouse close to the border and picked it up there. There are still a few oil based stains in Quebec. Can’t wait to see the result! Thank you again!

Any of the options will work. If you wait until Spring you will need to clean and brighten the wood.
I live in Quebec/Canada and just ordered 10 gallons of the 1500 series (rustic colour) to cover my 1000 sq/ft very old treated pine deck (one part is 20 yrs and the other one is 10 yrs old) that we just stripped and brightened with Behr products because we stained it last year with Behr (big mistake!).
I want to know if it is too late to stain it this fall: day temperature is still fairly warm ( 70’s) but it comes down to 45 at night. Should I put only one coat for the winter and the second one next spring or will it be OK to apply both coats now or wait until next spring for both coats, if so will I need to re-brighten it then? Thank you!

Is the idea that the wood should be out in the elements during this 4 to 12 month period (i.e., built into a pergola) or can I just store it in the garage for that period, then stain and build? Thanks for your expertise.
