I emailed 3 months back – I have a new PT deck approx 300 sq ft in Atlanta GA
3 months on – it is dry and ready to stain i assume
1 want some UV protection but want a balance between protection and as much of the natural color as possible
I have ordered the deck restore kit

Live in Alabama…PT pine deck approximately 3 weeks old. I like the fact that TWP 100 dries quicker and is cheaper. Since both Twp 100 and 1500 are legal here what criteria do I use to decide? Also I have seen it recommended to wait anywhere from 1 mo to 12 mo to apply to new wood…how do you know when it has been long enough? will also be staining a 12 year old screened porch that has never had anything done to it…can I use the same product?
Gary, all the TWP color and series are semi-transparents.
I have read about the 4 stains your company carries, the 100,200,500,and the 1500 series, plus the storm shield stain. I see the % volume solids and solids by weight but how does that compare with the standard names in the industry like transparents, semi trans, semi solids, and solids. For example is the 100 series transparent and the 1500 series semi trans? Thanks Gary

I live in Ontario Canada. I want to seal my wooden fence & deck. They have not been done before. Both are built from pressure treated lumber approximately 8 years old. I am considering using the clear finish. I am planning to plant vines along the fence. Between the 100 Series & the 1500 Series which would stand up the best & last the longest?

The transparency between the series are very similar. Both will show the natural wood grain and highlight, not mask it.
Is the 1500 series less transparent than the 100 series (it has more solids by volume and weight)? A few years ago on the recommendation of a consumer magazine, I made the mistake of using another brand that was called semi-transparent, but the stain was so opaque the deck looked painted. I’m going back to TWP (after stripping, brightening) but don’t want to make the same mistake again. I want to see the grain of the wood after staining. BTW I’m in south Texas with brutal sun.

Live in Michigan. Have two new retaining walls that were built last summer. One is made out of pressured treated wood, the other out of cedar wood. Noticed your response to Dave P regarding 100 for cedar wall. would 100 be o.k. for pressure treated lumber on other retaining wall?

Lake Home, use the 1500 Series for the siding. Should be good for 4-8 years on vertical cedar shakes.
I have an eight year old lake home with cedar shake siding on the upper eaves of the home. They have been peviously sealed. I have stripped and brightened them. I am not sure if I should use the 100, the 1500, or the 200. I want the longest lasting and best mold control. Which should I select and how long can I expect before I would have to reapply?
Yes it does. The Natural is not clear and is not the lightest tint either. Honeytone is the lightest.
Does the 1500 Natural color still provide enough uv protection to last for a couple of years?

Mike M, you should never put a gloss finish on outside wood. It will peel and create huge issues with future maintenance.
Hello and thank you for answering my previous question so quickly. I just received my stain samples. Im starting the stripping/brightening today!! i have another question. I read another persons question regarding a stain that would have a shinny/glossy finish and I believe that it was stated that none of these stains have a shinny/glossy finish. What application would you recommend, if any, if someone was interested in a shinny/glossy finished look? Would it be a varnish over the stain?

MaryL, you can still use oil based stains in IL. The TWP 1500 is oil based and can be shipped and used there. Look at the Gemini Restore Kit for the prep.
I have a huge deck that is 15 years old. It was last stained with, an oil based stain two years ago. Now, it’s weathered and looking bad. I was thinking about using the Behr Deckover product but am leery about using a “paint”. I always thought an oil based stain was better to preserve the wood. I live in Illinois where you can no longer purchase oil stain. I drove to Wisconsin to purchase the stain last time, but I’m not really happy having to do this all over within two years.
I read about your product and would like to know which of your products would you recommend and what is the prep work required. Can I pressure wash the deck prior to application?

Tim K, TWP is a penetrating stain. It is not clear but tinted and does not leave any shine. 5-6 gallons for two coats.
I need to coat and preserve a 600 sqft porch floor. The floor is tongue and grove fir which was installed 7-8 years ago. Will the TWP products provide a clear shiny finish? The property is in Idaho and the porch receives a lot of sun due to southern exposure, UV seems to be an issue. It is my intent sand the porch to remove the old stain and prepare the wood for a new coat. Please advise which twp product you would recommend? What quantity I need for at least two coats of product on 600 sqft?

We have a new deck-pressure treated pine decking, 1 week old. We live in Georgia and the deck is on the north side of the house. How long should we wait to stain it? What series should we use?
Mike M, you can only use the 1500 in MA as the 100 is not legal there. Need a total sq. footage added together for all the floor, rails, steps, etc to give an idea on the amount.
Hello I’m sorry if this question has already been answered. I tried reading all the Q&A’s before asking. I am staining a deck in MA. I will be stripping and brightening with products I already purchased from you. I am now interested in purchasing the TWP stain from you but have a few questions before I purchase.
* Which stain (100 or 1500) should I be looking to purchase? The deck does get sun in the summer and also snow piling up in the winter?
* The deck is about 600sqf. with 13 steps, and railings and posts to protect as well. How much stain would you recommend?

I have a screened porch & covered deck that is 10 mths old that is made of the kiln dried pressure treated wood. I just cleaned & brightened with the Gemini products. In Ga, what would be the best product to use to preserve the natural wood color yet protect it from the elements. First time staining so should I apply 1 or 2 coats.

Joe, after sanding you should apply the Gemini Restore Kit to prep better. This will help the stain to penetrate. Try the TWP 100 Series for this. Two light coats wet on wet for the application:

We live in Wisconsin and have a 1,000 sg. ft. cedar deck. I re-stain our deck every year and it’s really a lot of work. I’ve tryed several deck stains and nothing last more than a year. Last year I used Behr with 5-yr UV protection and the stain came off most of the knots. I’m either applying it incorrectly or not using the right stuff. This year I completely sanded the deck and want to apply another stain that will last and looks good. We really like a natural finish that shows the wood grain. What’s the best stain for us and are there any special tricks to putting it on.
Brady, the Honeytone is the lightest color.
What tint would you recommend to keep it as close to natural?
No color means no UV protection from graying. If you do not care that it will gray in a few months than you can use the clear otherwise you must choose a tint.
Have a 1yr old deck treated lumber. Looking to keep the natural wood grain look, no colors. Morning sun. What would you recommend?
Mark, TWP is not designed for Exotic hardwood decking.
We are interested in your products. For application on a Tigerwood deck, we assume that the 1500 Series would be the best choice. What color do you believe would be best suited to allow the coloration of Tigerwood to show through, but provide the best protection against UV rays?

Yes only the 1500 for OH. The Cedartone is a brownish/cedar color. I would get two gallons for the two coats.

follow up questions… we used 4 samples you sent us(Cedartone, honeytone, pecan, natural) My wife thinks the honeytone may be to light and the natural may have to much pink color in it. the pecan seems to have a lot more brown in it. cedartone is our 1st choice with pecan our second. wanted your opinion on our color observations and instructions on how to apply two coats on our freshly sanded wood. thanks. steve from cleveland ohio. We live in Malibu, Ca close to the water but not right on it. We get morning and evening dew/fog. What do you recommend for a 1200 sq ft; half new and half old redwood deck & railing (railing is all new)? We made a horrible mistake and used Behr transparent redwood stain. It looks like solid fire engine red children’s paint. It’s the worse product ever. We are in the process of stripping and sanding it off. So we are a little camera shy. How is TWP cali red? Is it very red and is it really transparent? Also what do you recommend 1500 or 100?
We just repaired, stripped and rebuilt half of a 1200 sq ft deck. We started putting on Behr transparent redwood. To our shock it looked absolutely horrid. What a huge mistake we are in the process of stripping and sanding that crap off! Now we are extremely nervous of what to put on this thing. What works best for Malibu, Ca close to the ocean but not right on the water? We get morning dew every morning and evening. So do we use the 1500 or 100 Series. And is the Cali Redwood really red. That Behr crap looks like a freaking fire engine solid red.

1-year old premium pressure treated wood deck in north central Arkansas, has not been stained, full sun all day. TWP 100 or 1500? 1 coat or 2 coats?
