TWP 100 Series 1 Gallon Deck Stain
Does TWP come in a non transparent stain. I just bought a home with T1-11 wood siding the color is dark brown and would like to change the color to redwood.
TWP comes in semi transparent colors only.
I plan to mix TWP 100 – 3 gallons dark oak with 2 gallons of pecan. Approx 300 sf of new smooth cut kiln dried pine. Aged 4 mths and prepped. If the wood doesn’t accept 2 coats, what is the shelf life of the remaining mixed stain? Hopefully, long enough to apply another coat.
Only one coat on new wood is the correct directions. You would be better off mixing a total of 3 gallons. See here for shelf life: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
Is there any problem recoating TWP 100 initially on new rough sawn timber, w/ a different color stain base TWP 100 in a subsequent year or two if I want to darken things up?
As long as you prep first with the Gemini Restore Kit, you will be okay to go darker in color: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Does TWP offer a stain that is white in color – like the cape code gray but much lighter?
Sorry but no. It cannot be tinted white as well.
I have a fence that contractor stained with TWP100 Redwood many years ago. Stain has held up well considering the time since last cleaning/staining. BTW: the only stain this contractor uses us TWP. If I am using the same TWP100 Redwood to re-stain, can I just clean/brighten before re-staining or do I need to strip? If yes, is there a water-base I can use over TWP100 without stripping? Thank you, Joseph.
Clean and brighten with this if using the same stain: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
You cannot apply a water-based stain over the TWP.
On your “Prepping New Wood for TWP Stains” page, it mentions that the TWP 100 Series is for new smooth wood, yet in all of the questions and comments it seems that it is suggested that new smooth wood be weathered still even for the 100 series. Does the 100 series not require it to be weathered as long as the 1500 series does?
They both have the same weathering for new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I live in Mobile, Al and will be staining a new Yellawood deck with TWP 100 series Dark Oak. I bought the wood from a lumber company which was store outdoors under awnings. The salesman stated since the wood is stored outdoors and not indoors like big box stores i could stain within 1 month. Should i wait for 4 months and if i do should i still use the cleaner and brighter after 4 months. Also, 1 or 2 coats?
He is wrong. It has to be installed, weathered for 4+ months, and then prepped correctly before staining.
3yr old PTP Deck. I coated once with Olympic Oil Based (Desert Sand) Semi Transparent. It is almost worn off on horizontals/ brown tone still on most verticals. Can I get away with NOT Powersanding this deck. I want to use TWP 100 or 1500. Deck is apx 12 x 16Ft with a 3×3 Ft bump out. Elevation is 8 1/2Ft. Stairs are 42inch wide. It would be almost impossible to completely strip all the vertical wood of prior stain. Thanks
You have to prep this and you will need to strip and brighten while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
You do not need to sand this. You should be able to strip most of this. Use the stripper additives to help: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives
Some series 100 can labels say preservative and some say protectant.. What is the difference? Some of the cans the info is printed right on the metal can and some have a paper label. What is the difference?
No difference. Just a label change.
Can i stain with the Cape Cod Gray stain over a failed semi-transparent stain on some adirondack chairs without stripping?
No, you will have to remove the old stain.
Is it necessary to remove previous twp stain before recoating? We had honeytone on and it seems to be worn off after just over a year so we were looking at going to cedar tone or redwood.
It would be best to prep with this if changing colors: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I’m redoing a glider, sanded it down to the bare wood could I use the 100 or 1500 stain on it, will be in the sun and rain all summer.
Either series would work.
I also don’t need a gallon only a quart if I buy a gallon how long is the self life.
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
How long should I let a new treated lumber deck weather before applying this product?
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
How long does TWP need to dry before it can be walked on?
12-24 hours.
We just installed cedar siding on a new barn and would like to keep the color as close to raw wood as possible. I noticed that “Clear” has no UV protection. Does that mean it will not prevent the cedar from greying? If so, what shade would you recommend to keep it as close to new wood look as possible ? Cedartone or Natural (1500 series)?
Clear will not prevent UV Graying. Must be tinted. Honeytone is the lightest tinted color.
Can TWP 100 be applied to pressure treated 6×6? What moisture level?
15% but if new wood, it has to weather and be prepped.
I live in Kansas. I built a new cedar deck three years ago and, after allowing it to weather for 8 months, I stained it with Flood CWF-UV clear. That stain peeled off and/or faded which I re-applied last year. It has done the same this year and so I am contemplating switching to TWP. I am going to power wash the deck surface and rail tops first and my question is: will the TWP last for more than one season? if I use the clear, will it darken the cedar wood to a rich, dark finish or should I use a tinted color?
You will need to strip off the Flood fully first. TWP typically last 2-3 years on a deck. Clear will not provide UV protection so it must be tinted.
Is there a butternut brown?
In the 200 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
We just installed a new porch using cedar pillars and posts. Can we treat this with TWP right away since the cedar is not smooth, or do we need to let it weather for several months? Thanks for your help.
If rough sawn wood, you can do right away.
Hi;
I live in colorado springs (6800 ft elevation and alot of sun) and
just installed box steps for my backyard door (like a small deck.)
total coverage 108 sf.
I used red pressure treated pine from HDepot about 2 mnths ago and it’s drying out fast.
Which product do you suggest to bring out the red and protect from UV.
We get some rain and alot of snow but it melts and dries out quickly.

Use the 100 Series.
I am staining a 4yr old cedar deck which I recently power washed. I am having trouble finding the TWP100. Would 1500 be a good substitute?
Sure but you can order off our website and have it delivered.
How long will that take to be delivered to 01550? And how much is shipping on 2 gallons?
For shipping, add to cart and enter your full address. It will update with a cost. As for shipping, about 2-3 business days.
How long after I power wash my 4 year old cedar deck should I wait before applying TWP 100?
48 hours.
Used Honeytone 115 on my deck support posts in September 2018. How do i know when to reapply? Also, Is there a window/door caulk that you recommend for series 100 dark oak?
Reapply when it starts to fade. Any caulk will work, does not matter the brand.
I’m having a tongue and groove pine ceiling installed on my porch…wondering which stain i should get(100, 200, or 1500) and how i should prep the wood
Use the 1500. See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
What is the difference between the 100 series and the 1500 series? We just installed a new deck and live in Kentucky. After letting the deck weather for 4-12 months, should we use the 100 series or the 1500 series for our deck?
Use the 100 Series. Main difference is VOC compliancy for certain states,
Do I need to let tough sewn cedar weather 4-12 months, I don’t want it to gray…
No. You can stain rough sawn right away as long as it is clean and dry.
I just installed 8×8” rough sawn cedar posts on our porches, what would be the best way to seal them? I would like to keep the natural color of the cedar.
Any of the TWP 100 or 1500 colors will work. The color choice is your preference. You can see some photos on this link: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
Would the cedar gray if I used clear since it does not have UV protection?
Yes. Must be tinted if you want UV protection.
Is this product a clear sealer to seal a deck before applying a final stain or semi – transparent stain …??
No, this is a semi-transparent stain. You cannot apply a sealer first and then stain over it. No need as well.
Can I buy TWP retail? If so where?
I’m in York ME.
Hi, we ship online from our website as a dealer for TWP. Takes about 3-4 days to arrive there.
i have a deck that gets direct sun light from 10am til evening. 100 or 1500?
1500.
Help!!! We started staining our deck with the 2 gallons we were told we needed to get the job done. Unfortunately, both we and the sales rep grossly underestimated how dry the wood on the deck was. So, now we have run out of stain with only about 3/4 of the deck getting a first coat, and nobody is open for several days near us that carries your product. Are we going to need to clean and treat the deck again, then start the whole process over once we are able to buy more stain? Or can we finish staining the remaining part of the untreated deck and do a second coat on the whole thing? Please advise as I am unsure what to do at this point. Thanks!
For the best results and most uniform appearance, it would be best to prep again and redo all with the two coats applied wet on wet.
Thank you. Can you apply the stain with a power paint sprayer, or does it need to be a manual paint sprayer like the old school kind you can use to spray for weeds or pests? If I’m going to have to redo the whole deck again, I sure don’t want to have to hand paint/roll it like we did the first time. Thanks for your help!
You can use a pump sprayer or airless sprayer but you will need to back brush to ensure an even application if spraying.
I’ve just read two years worth of questions and answers. I’m impressed with your responsiveness and patience (there are alot of repeat questions).
I have a few questions.
1. I’ve powerwashed my 20 year old cedar deck. The last application of stain (Cabot, I think) was probably 5 years ago. Do I need to clean AND brighten, or just brighten?
2. I probably need to strip (and clean and/or brighten per the answer to #1) the railings, particularly the spindles because I couldn’t powerwash the spindle sides that faced each other. I know you can’t give me a definitive answer, but is it typically sufficient to spray on stripper and then powerwash? Maybe twice?
3. I bought a recommended pad applicator. Is that ok for both coats or do I have to “back-brush”. If so, what is “back-brushing”?
4. There is a stained area where the grill was. I expect I need to sand it (if stripping doesn’t do anything). I know you’re not a fan of sanding because it closes the grain. Is the brightener sufficient to re-open the grain?
Thanks for all your help.
1. Strip and brighten to remove the Cabot.
2. Yes.
3. Yes, you can use the pad for both coats. See this about wet on wet: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
4. If you spot sand then the stain will take differently or lighter in color. The brightener will not “fix” that. Only natural weathering for a few months will.
Thank you.
I’ve got 500 sf to stain. If coverage is 100 – 200 sf, is that one coat or two?
You will need 5 gallons for the two coats.
I will be applying TWP 100 to my new, untreated cedar deck. Beside washing the deck and allowing 48 hours of dry time, will I need to use any other prep product on the wood before application?
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Thank you. For the deck I will let it weather for 4 months before application. I will also be using twp100 clear on a pine tongue and groove porch roof. This wood will also be new. This wood will not see much if any water or sun and therefore won’t weather much. I would like to apply the twp100 clear to all sides of this siding before install. Would this be ok to do before install? Should I use one of your prep products before applying the clear?
No reason to apply to all sides and it is not suggested. Just the exposed side after install. Prep first to remove mill glaze.
With the prairie gray and cape cod colors, are they easy to reapply maintenance coats since they are “closer to a semi-solid appearance”?
Yes, they are easy to maintain.
I wish to apply a maintenance coat of TWP to my porch which was originally treated four years ago with TWP 120-1 pecan. How much product will I need for 350 sq. feet and can I apply it over the original treatment?
Prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
You will need about 2-3 gallons.
IS TWP good for exotic wood such as IPE?
You can use it on IPE.
I’m building a pergola out of rough sawn red cedar. Can I let the lumber dry out in my garage and then apply TWP 100 or 1500?
If rough sawn, then yes.
I had a carport installed last week. The posts are treated wood and the top is cedar. What stain color would you recommend using on the treated wood and cedar for it to look more uniform?
You will not be able to make the two kinds of wood uniform fully as the green in the PTP will show through. See this about new wood tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Nancy, I just had my house done similar to how you did your carport. I have tried several samples and I think we are going to mix clear and dark oak. We want a lighter brown color but dark oak is very dark. We plan on doing ours next week. I’ll post when we finish and what we used.
Nancy, I just finished staining my cedar porch that looks identical to yours. I used 100 series dark oak and clear. I mixed it 2:1 (2 gallons of dark oak and 1 gallon of clear). I did this to help lighten up the dark oak. On the cedar, dark oak is pretty dark. We wanted dark but not that dark. It mixed perfectly. Took right at 5 gallons to do all of this. Turned out great. We have pine on the ceiling so it gave it a good two tone look. Hope this helps! Here are the before and after pictures.
Thanks for sharing this information with me, Jordan. It was really helpful!
I have some leftover TWP 100 from staining my porch. Can I use it on a picnic table or is it inappropriate for an eating surface?
As long as you prep the picnic table correctly, you are okay. Make sure to allow the TWP to fully cure before using.
Is there an advantage to using twp 100 over TWP 1500 if your state allows it? I will be staining a new wood deck about 12 months after it was constructed.
No advantage. They will both last about the same.
I am absolutely not allowed to apply anything on or even near the water. No mitigation is acceptable. I will have to remove the deck transport it off the water and stain it there. A lot of extra work. Do you recommend staining all sides or just the top?
Just the exposed side.
I am getting ready to install 2×6 KDAT decking on a dock. I would like to stain all sides of the boards but this will have to be done before installation. I would not be able to wait the recommended 2 months. I am not allowed to apply stain on the boards if they are on the floating dock per lake regulation.
What is my next best option?
You cannot do it now as it needs to weather. Install, let weather, prep, and stain. You can either remove from water to stain or use something to catch the stain drips from getting into the water.
What would be the coverage per gallow for TWP100 on Preasure Treated Pine that has been left to dry out for a year? Would I get closer to 100 sqft per gallon or closer to the 200 sqft per gallon? My get is 630 sqft. Thanks!
You will need about 5-6 gallons for the 630 sq feet and the two coats applied wet on wet.
OR Cape Cod Grey?
As long as the wood is prepped correctly.
Will TWP 100 Prairie Gray work on chairs made out of pine? Thanks!!
Is cedartone and cedartone natural the same color?
Yes it is.
Late yesterday-Monday, I prepped my wood deck with the Gemini restore deck kit–cleaner and brightener. I understand I need to wait 48 hours before staining (TWP 100 pecan)–so I am good to stain tomorrow-Wednesday late in the day. However, rain is forecast with in 24 hours (maybe 12-18 hours after my stain application (on thursday). The can says don’t apply the stain if rain is expected in 48 hours. SHOULD I WAIT TO STAIN FOR A DAY WHERE THERE IS NO FORECASTED RAIN THREAT? I would really like to get this done tomorrow if at all possible and not delay it
Thanks Dave
12-24 hours after applying should be okay for a rain.
Thanks
I applied the TWP 100 yesterday and thankfully 12 hours later–no rain.
How soon can it be walked on? (I’ve read the can twice and it has zero instructions on how to tell when it’s okay to walk on the deck after staining)
thanks
12-48 hours. Make sure it is dry and not sticky or tacky.
Also–I have a few shiny places on some boards–I guess I didn’t wipe up the excess stain on those areas well enough
Is there a fix for this—14 hours after application? (maybe wipe with some mineral spirits?)
My neighbor decided to run his sprinklers and soak my fence just hours after staining….is there anything that can be done? What happens when the fence gets wet after staining?
Hard to say if affected or not but most likely fine. It would very noticeable if it is an issue with stain drips and runs.
🙁 now that its daylight I can see the damage. Only dripping in 6-7 areas on 1 side of the fence. Anything I can do to soften the spots up without redoing the whole thing?
FYI, that is not from the sprinklers but bleed through from the opposite side. Try just touching up those 7 boards by lightly recoating them. Make sure do the entire board length end to end.
Darn it. Thank you!
I am unable to find the clear I was told you have, please help me I need to order asap
