TWP 100 Series 1 Gallon Deck Stain
How often do you need to restain your deck using this product? Thank you
Every 2-3 years.
I recently coated my decks with copper naphthenate. Then I discovered your product and thought I would like some color. It’s still green now but I know copper naphthenate turns brown after a while. My question is Is TWP 100 compatible and how long should I wait to stain my deck with TWP 100.
You can stain whenever.
I have purchased 100 series pecan stain to treat new pressure treated wood deck furniture. We were told that the wood was “double kiln dried” and ready to be stained. I suspect that the wood is at least two months old and I have just used a deck cleaner to remove mill glaze. My main concern centers on the advice to not stain all sides of the wood. This will produce an odd appearance on areas such as a chair back. Would you please comment on the use of TWP in this particular application.
Only stain the exposed wood that is visible, not all sides.
The problem is that all sides of the chair back will be visible. The end grain at the bottom of the boards making up the chair back would be the only exception. Obviously, this is a very small portion of those boards. This would also be the case for several boards on other pieces of furniture. Does this mean that TWP is an inappropriate product for staining deck furniture?
Cover all visible wood and you are okay. It is fine for furniture.
Is the coverage per gallon of 100-200 sq ft already taking into account the 2 coats? This is being used for a cedar fence. I have 15 panels of 6×6 fence. We built it a couple of falls ago and never did anything to it. Now we are power washing and planning on staining. Any tips would be appreciated.
Coverage is for one coat, not two. For two coats is averages about 100-125 sq feet per gallon.
are two coats only needed for decks? or is it for fences too? i was reading 2 coat application page and it talked about not needing to do a second coat on verticals.
It depends on the age of the wood and the porosity of the wood. In most cases, fences will need two coats.
Isn’t the 1500 series better for fences
Not really, they both last about the same.
I have an 250sf unstained cypress deck sitting 1 year to protect. I’m concerned with how runny the stain will be on a painted white skirt. Will the stain wipe off the exterior paint readily or do I need plastic and tape over it. I could do the edges and steps with a brush and the main deck with applicator or roller.
It will get on the white stain but if you wipe it off right away, it should not be an issue.
Just what I wanted to know, thanks
Can we use a airless sprayer? And if yes, which tip sizes should I be using?
Yes, you can use an airless sprayer. Any tip should work.

What do most people use for application on a 250 ft of cedar fence? Roller, sprayer, electric paint sprayer?
Thanks.
Spray and or brush.
What type of spray is recommended? Thanks for the reply.
Pump or airless sprayer will work.
would a roller work?
Not as well. Rollers will splatter.
Use a garden (hand pump) sprayer and a brush
Thank you for your help. Could you please advice what kind of stain would work?
No stain will work unless you remove the Deckover 100%. Once removed fully, you can use any of the TWP stains.
I have attached few pics.
My deck is about 25 years old. I painted few years back with Behr deck over. I am planning to get rid of old paint and clean and brighten my deck. I want to use TWP 100 series pecan stain. would it work?
How long will it take to get it within USA
TWP will work only if you are about to remove the Deckover 100% and that is not easy. You will have to power sand it all off. Shipping depends on where you live.
What stain do you recommend for a redwood deck? I’m looking for a balance of maintaining the color but also providing maximum UV protection as I live in New Mexico. It seems intuitive to choose the Redwood stain. Will the TW-100 Redwood stain mask the color or enhance it? The redwood has sections which are quite red and sections that are light colored. The deck is 5 years old and I have sanded it again so it is ready for stain.
We would need to see pictures to make sure pre is correct. As for color, you can use any color you like, it does not have to be “redwood” color. The redwood color is a rich red. https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
Thanks for the reply and pointing me to the albums. Attached is a pic; I’m looking to stain benches and railings. The pic doesn’t show the lighter sections as much but they are there at other locations. Based on your pics in the albums, it appears that the “Honeytone” stain might give one the best chance of preserving the natural redwood color? I wonder if the “Redwood” would provide more protection against graying and UV?
You can use the Honeytone or Redwood, up to you. How did you prep? Sanding? What grit paper?
I’m going with the TWG-100 Redwood stain as I think it will enhance the color the best. Will post pics in the Redwood stain album after I’m done. I prepped by sanding with a 40 grit, then 80. See pic with how it looked pre-prep. I might do a quick smooth over with 120 grit before I apply the stain to freshen it up. Thanks for the help.
Never sand more than 60-80 grit and always clean and brighten the wood after sanding to open up the wood grain: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Here’s an after picture of my redwood benches after heavy sanding, and then application of 2 coats of the TWG-100 Redwood stain. I’m happy with the results!
As a follow-up, here’s what my redwood benches look like 2 days after 2 coats of the TWG-100 Redwood stain has been applied. For prep, I sanded using a belt sander with 40 grit then 80 grit.
Also which stain is better, 1500 or 1000 series? I did the 1500 2 years ago and couldn’t find it in the store, so had to buy the 100. I live in Kansas where it’s blazing hot in the summer and my deck faces west. Thanks.
They last the same.
I did not do the wet on wet application. Is it okay to do my second coat after the first one has dried? I just read about this on your website which made more sense than on the can. Thanks!
It may not be able to take a second coat if the first coat has already dried and cured. Best to leave as is and do a light wash and recoat next Spring.
It has only dried 24 hours. Still wait? Thanks.
Yes.
My research finds that BoraCare will mitigate the beetles. It penetrates the wood with borax salt, which renders the wood unpalatable to the beetles and kills them. The question remains, will TWP or any other finishing product will penetrate the wood after using BoraCare. I’m getting conflicting info on that question and I’m awaiting the answer from Nisus is the BoraCare manufacturer.
As long as the wood is porous and the TWP can soak in, then you are okay.
Is one coat sufficient? How often should it be repeated? is TW P the product I should be using?
I have another issue with somebody of the logs. There are powder post beetles in some. Any suggestions as to how to mitigate them would be appreciated.
If the wood will only allow one coat to soak in, then yes, that is sufficient. Not sure on how to protect against the beetles. Maybe get an exterminator to treat after the staining is done.
I am in a dilemma about finishing logs for outside benches. I have used TWP. The wood would only take one coat. (Is that normal?) I had hoped to finish with timber oil after TWP, but after letting the TWP set for two weeks, the timber oil would not penetrated. I would appreciate any comments about using TWP alone or not at all. I have many logs to do and don’t want to screw them up! (By the way, I’m working with red oak.)
You cannot top coat anything over the TWP. No need as well.
My deck faces south and takes a beating. I have used TWP stains for all staining. What TWP 100 stain provides the most UV protection?
Yes.
Which color TWP 100 stain provides the most UV protection?
Darker brown or red colors. Does not matter which one.
Does TWP 100 contain paraffin or linseed oil? Is a respirator required when applying the stain?
No paraffin. It is a blend of natural and synthetic oils. You can wear a respirator if you desire it when applying.
Thank you. If I decide to use the Honeytone 115 for the first or second coat of stain can I go darker in the future without removing the lighter stain and just
clean and brighten?
Yes.
We are having our deck re-boarded this week with KDAT pressurized pine. We live in North.Carolina The contractor said we should stain within 45 days. Will one coat of twp 100 stain absorb by that time, and protect the wood? What is the earliest we can put a second maintenance coat on?
See here for KDAT tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/kdat-and-twp-wait-period-for-new-wood/
Where are you located?
Michigan.
what is difference between 100 series & 1500 series?
VOC compliance for certain states. The 100 is not allowed in all.
I have a batu deck and don’t want to stain it just clear coat to bring out the color. The 1500 series all have colors is there one you recommend that doesn’t?
TWP 1500 comes in Clear but a clear will not change or enhance the color and it will also not provide any UV protection from fading and will turn gray in months. You must have a tinted color to do what you want.
Which color would you recommend if I wanted my deck to keep the color the same as when it’s wet?
Honeytone is the closest to a wet look.
Thank you I will give it a try. Should I use your restore kit if I sealed it last year with Messmers clear? It’s faded but not grey.
You will need to remove the Messmers. Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Also what is the difference between the 100 and 1500 series? Which would you recommend for this deck? Thanks for answering all my questions! I look forward to using TWP!
Where do you live? It is a VOC difference mainly.
I live in Seattle
Use the 100 series.
Also what is the difference between the 100 and 1500 series? Which would you recommend for this deck?
I have a 5 gallon bucket of TWP 100 deck stain that I purchased in August 2019. It has never been opened and has been stored in ideal conditions. Would it be ok to use now? I wasn’t sure of shelf life of unopened stain but am hoping it it is fine.
Yes, it is fine. Mix well first.
Last year I ordered five gallons of 1520 Pecan. I did no use all five gallons. Can I oder two additional gallons and mix all of it together to come up with a uniform color? My deck is “yallow pine” with the deck basically laying on the ground @ 20′ X 26″. I’ve already brightened and power washed the deck with y ew Generic 1500 psi, 2.5 gpm.
Please let me know your thoughts.
cheers,
Jack
An opened container typically does not last more than 12 months. Probably best to start with fresh stain.
I stripped, sanded, brightened, and stained my deck last year with TWP 1501. The deck needs another coat this year. Do I need to stay with 1501 or can I use 101 series?
Stick with the same color and series.
Do you have any recommendations with regard to storing left over stain from the 5 gallon steel can? The gasket detached from the lid such that using the 5 gallon can to store the leftover will not be feasible. I need to store the remainder for next time. Thanks!
You can use a plastic pail with a lid.
Just stained today (1 coat) on new cedar that was installed last August. It’s been drying for a few hours and it looks like there are some patches. Do we need to add another coat or can we wait until we add the maintenance coat around month 9-12?
Wait until the maintenance coat in 9-12 months.
Can TWP 100 be used over an existing stained deck. Is this a solid color stain that will cover an existing color? What product suggestion would you have.
TWP cannot be used over a different brand of stain. You would need to power sand this to remove it.
Can you combine 2 different TWP 100 stain colors to make a blended color?
Yes, you can.
hand rail & deck
Strip and brighten for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
My deck was previously stained with this product 4 years ago.
The first picture is of my deck, the wood doesnt look too bad.
The second picture is of the handrail and it may need to be replaced.
What is your recommendation?
I was thinking of replacing the hand rail. I would then clean and rejuvenate the deck, then apply TWP 100.
Hello,
I installed brand new deck last year (summer 2019) and then I proceeded to stain/paint the new wood, and this year most of it is chipped and peeling off. I sanded the whole deck even if it was new wood and was told I need to seal/paint it immediately the same year.. From the picture i sent, do i need to ressand whole deck..or can i apply new sealant/paint over it…And what should I use.. Please help, dont know what to do anymore on a new cedar deck installed last year.. Thanks
I am not sure if you followed the new wood directions? https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Sanding was also the wrong way to prep. Closes the pores. Best to remove all and start over: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
We have a new pressure treated deck about 20 x 12. What is the best product to protect/seal the deck in upstate NY. Thanks
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
After the wait and prep, look at the TWP 1500.
How soon can it rain after applying the stain?
12-24 hours.
I found on line that it was fine to use an oil base stain on my deck
Not TWP. That is false info.
Can I use this on composite decking
Sorry but no.
Prepping to apply TWP100 Cedartone to 4-5 year old rough sawn pergola in North Carolina. (0569, 0571 shows before treatment). On suggestion of paint guy at hardware store, Used bleach based 30 Second cleaner. After spraying 30 second cleaner and rinsing, wood looked much better when wet… next day after drying a bit, wood was very white (0695). Realized it had a thin coating of white material which came up with scrubbing and power wash. After a good bit of effort, got to the wood shown in most pics. Then learned there had been a clear coat applied years ago, which I assume explains the white residue that needed to be removed. Now almost complete with power wash and scrubbing (giant hassle). I believe I am bruising the wood in spots with the power washer as it is awkward work up there. Still see some white shown in 0696, 0697,0698,0699, 0700, 0701, 0702. My questions:
0. What is the white residue?
1. Do I need to get every bit of visible white residue off the wood before staining?
2. If so, any suggestions for technique other than brute force scrubbing and power wash?
3. Am I mostly down to bare wood now (minus the white spots) and can stain once I get to acceptable level of white material removal?
Open to any other suggestions to make remainder of job easier and more successful.
-Oxidation of the wood fibers
-No
-Yes, you can stain this.
Thanks for the quick reply. Looking forward to seeing the results.
I am using pressure treated lumbar for joists on a treehouse. The wood is appearance grade (nonincised) and has a brown color to it. There is a slight hint of green, but mainly brown. What product would you recommend to make the joists more attractive since they will be very visible (treehouse deck is 14 feet from ground).
Use the TWP 1500 Series.
Any thoughts on which color would be best to darken the tone of the wood and improve the appearance?
Maybe Dark Oak.
We have Yr 3 Doug Fir deck..used Sherwin Williams latex Stain. It’s peeling..powerWashed and repeated stain..peeling again this yr. ??
Should we strip or sand to apply your product?
You will have to sand this off, it cannot be stripped.
What are the guidelines regarding air temperature when applying the TWP stains?
50-90 degrees.
Is Cape Cod gray again an oil-based stain or water-based?
Oil.
How can I determine my shopping costs? You have noted that all orders are suspended …does that prevent determining the shipping costs also?
That should still work. Just enter your shipping info.
Are you shipping to houses as of 5/3?
By the end of next week, yes.
I am installing a new redwood deck with the basic 2x6x16 boards from Home Depot. I’ve read so many good things about semi-transparent stains for looks and durability. What stain and sealer would you recommend? I want to maintain the basic look of redwood, but also want good protection against sun, snow and rain. Just not sure if I should use a product with a redwood “tint” and whether that will compete with the natural look of redwood.
Any color that you like will work. Honeytone is the lightest tint. Similar to a wet look. See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I re-built part of my deck last year with new cedar. I am ready to stain it this spring after 6+ months of aging. The wood is pretty dirty and aged gray in most spots. Should I use a cleaner and brightener/neutralizer or can I get by with just pressure washing the new wood? The directions on the back of the TWP100 says to use bleach. Should I use that instead?
You would want the cleaner and the brightener: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
How long can you expect Honeytone 115 will last on a fence?
On vertical wood, 3-5 years.
What is the difference between TWP 100 series and 1500 series? I may have missed the difference while reading.
Mainly VOC compliancy for certain states: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-stain-comparison
Can we use TWP100 over our 4-year old Olympic maximum stain without sanding?
What would you recommend for the preparation before the staining? Thank you!
No, you will need to remove the Olympic when switching brands of stain. You do not need to sand but strip it with this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
