TWP 100 Series 1 Gallon Deck Stain
Are the grays semi solid or semi transparent
Closer to semi-solid.
Stained a pergola with TWP100 and it looks great. but got some stain on the concrete counter surface and did not catch while it was being applied – what is best way/product to use to remove TWP100 from concrete ?
Try Goof Off graffiti remover.
Singerman Laboratories makes a concrete rust remover that might help you. I used it when I got stains on the sidewalk from fertilizer and it worked amazingly well. Since it’s a stain remover (though formulated for rust) it may help lift the stain. Follow the directions closely. Hope it helps.
It will not remove a deck stain like TWP.
Hi Live in EL PASO TX (Desert) and my deck is very damaged (too much sun). Which serie do you recommend? I was using clear but I just noticed that does not have UV protection
Prep with this kit to remove the Clear: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
And then use any of the TWP tinted colors that you like. Darker colors will give better UV protection over lighter colors.
If Thompsons water seal was used on a deck, can it just be power washed before applying twp 100?
No, use the Stripper and Brightener Kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I used the twp honey tone last spring and it looks great. In order to keep it looking good can I stain over it or do I have to do some prep first? Can I power wash it or will that remove the existing stain?😀
Use this for prep when recoating: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
But if it still looks good, can I just add another coat of twp without cleaning it?
No, you have to prep when reapplying.
+ How to I find the answers to the questions I posted a month ago? I don’t see them below.
You did not post it on this page. See here: https://twpstainhelp.com/need-some-help-with-twp-stains/#comment-28590
Note: I’m in San Francisco Bay Area, CA
Brand new redwood fence with treated posts. It has sawdust all over it and just a teeny bit of sap drips on the few knots. I like the cape cod gray 105 but I believe that comes in semi solid. Will I still be able to see the redwood grain? And what series for redwood? How many gallons 390 sq feet? The redwood is rough so do I have to wait to stain it? Thank you :). Celeste
For CA, you can only use the TWP 1500 or 200 Series. The 200 Series has a slate gray if you are looking for a gray. You can stain rough wood right away.
I purchased your product before. I notice you have a 150. Is the 100 series used for bamboo fencing? Also, I had a color of light cedar. Is the cedar tone the same thing? Thank you
Neither the 100 or 1500 Series can be used on bamboo. Cedartone is not the same as Light Cedar.
Can I apply on my deck the twp 101 series semi-transparent cedar stain over a twp 102 redwood semi transparent stain, I have use 150 to sand it and applied clear-transparent one coat, thanks
No, you would need to remove it fully by stripping it with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Does the clear stop the natural greying? I just cleaned and power washed my fencing and decks and hate the greying and I hate washing every spring.
No. It has to be a tinted color for UV protection
The 1500 series is described as semi-transparent oil based stain. Is this also semi-transparent and oil based? I really just am looking for the differences between the 100 and 1500 series stains. We currently have the 1500 series but we are looking for a different color that is only available in the 100 series.
Both are semi-transparent and oil based. The difference is VOC content for certain states. FYI, the grays in the 100 Series are semi-solids.
TWP is not designed for interior areas like showers. We would not suggest it.
No pictures but new wood will always stain lighter the first time staining as they are less absorbent.
Thank you – I realized I hadn’t added the pictures and it wouldn’t let me add them as a reply so I posted the question again with pictures. I am aware that new boards won’t absorb as much. I was hoping for a little more substantive answer though. How much lighter? Will it look consistent? And more importantly would one color be better than another to achieve that? For instance, would darker like Dark Oak be better than a lighter color like Pecan? Here are the pictures again.
How much lighter or the difference in color varies drastically based on the porosity between the new wood and the old wood. There is no way to say for certain how much color difference there will be. The different TWP colors will not make a difference or blend better with one color compared to another. The new wood will be lighter no matter what.
So basically I’m on my own with no recomendation or even guidance from the experts. That’s quite frustrating.
We explained in detail that new and old wood will not match. You want an answer that cannot be given. Sorry if you do not like what we are saying but would you rather we lie and then you are unhappy?
I would like some guidance as to how to minimize the chances of ending up with a deck that looks like … You have experience with 1000s upon thousands of decks. I have none. Would a lighter color be likely to show less variation? Should I just apply a clear sealer instead of stain? Would I be better off leaving the deck on finished and just waiting more years for the new boards to age? What? If your answer is going to be the same non answer just skip the reply.
Based on our experience with 1000s of decks, we have answered you correctly.
-Would a lighter color be likely to show less variation? No, as we mentioned prior, color will not make a difference.
-Should I just apply a clear sealer instead of stain? A clear sealer will offer zero UV protection from graying and will gray in a matter of months. The stain must be tinted.
Would I be better off leaving the deck on finished and just waiting more years for the new boards to age? We would stain it now, understanding that the lighter wood will stain lighter to some degree. The next time you redo in 2-3 years, it will all blend.
I went ahead with your Honeytone. I bought a 5 gallon bucket hoping that would cover a 450 sq ft deck. The old boards were so dry they sucked in so much stain that I was not able to get a full two coats on before running out. Some of the vertical facias could definitely use a 2nd coat for visual purposes. Do/can I come back at a later date this month and put on a full 2nd coat or should I just ride it out until next year?
Wait 6-12 months, and do a light wash to remove any dirt. Recoat then
can you use on pressure treated wood?
Yes!
Hi I recently stain my deck with TWP 100 series, It turned out great with all the proper surface preparations, My question is how to routinely clean to keep long lasting effects, water or wood flor cleaner like Murphys, pledge or similar?
😀
Use water to lightly clean off dirt.
I want to treat a new cedar swing. I noticed your instructions recommend allowing the wood to age. Why is that? What product to I use to treat the new wood?
New wood has to weather and age so a stain can properly soak into the wood grain: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Can I get the TWP100 color 105 or 106 in a quart I have a small project and love your product. As you can see from my account I have your your product several times. Thanks for the help
Sorry but single gallons are the smallest size available.
Can i use this on raised beds?
Yes.
I plan to stain Douglas fir porch posts on a new build with TWP 100 stain and also T&G pine ceiling. The DF posts have been installed for 5 months, but the pine ceiling is not in yet. Do I have to wait for that to weather as well before staining?
Also, as a side note, we had started staining some of the DF posts with Minwax gel stain until we realized it would have to be poly’ed yearly. We sanded it all off so we can apply TWP 100. Do we need to do anything else to prep the wood before staining?
Lastly, we would also like to stain a treated wood fence with this stain. It has been installed for 4 years and never stained. Do we have to prep it before staining? Thank you!
Yes, new wood needs to be weathered and prepped. Prep all your wood with this first: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I used TWP100 (103 dark oak) on new PT wood deck 2 years ago. This summer we built a new gazebo attached to the deck and used the same stain. The 2 year old stained deck had darkened substantially, to where it looks like two different colors. Whats the best method to lighten up the older stain? (FYI the walking surface is clear 100. The trim, rail posts, lattice are 103.)
😃
You will have to remove it all and start over with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Just finished staining the deck with the TWP 100 series. It looks great! However, some stain has dried onto the aluminum spindles. Is there a good method for getting this off?
Try Goof Off but test first.
Rustic
😎
I got my wood prepped (vertical cedar siding on front and rear of A-frame) a little late in the year. Northern Wisconsin. Using TWP 100 for the finish. There show to be some days left above 50. If I should be able to get somebody to apply the product in next couple weeks, how long after application does it need to remain above 45 degrees to be effetive? Am i better off waiting until next spring?
Thank you!
As long as it does not drop below 40 the first night you will be fine.
I need to stain 10×8 cypress posts on front porch. Live in Mississippi. Humid and will get about 6-8 hrs afternoon sun. I have read that this is the best product to use – retains color, resists mold/mildew and lasts longer than others. Two questions – what series do you recommend and should I use a marine finish (or something else) to seal /protect posts?
Use the TWP 100 Series and you cannot apply a coating or seal over the top of the TWP.
Can you use a 1500 series over a previous existing 100 series going darker ?
You should strip and brighten for the prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
What would the closest color be to early American min-wax
Color varies based on wood type and age to no way to say outside testing for samples.https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Can i use 1500 series over top of clean 100 series ?
Strip and brighten for prep if switching: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I live in Centerville, Ohio. Should I use the 1000 or the 1500 for my deck? TIA
1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
How long will a open gallon last of 100 series honeytone stain
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
How long to apply second coat
Second coats are applied wet on wet: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
I had a 4 day window of no rain (2 before, and none in the forecast for 2 more days) so I finally put down two coats of twp 100 this morning and it looked great!
But then a quick pop up heavy thunderstorm hit and totally soaked the deck, probably 3 hours after I finished. Am I back to square one? Previously it was painted with a water based stain and was a pain to pressure wash it all off. Am I in for a package of RAD stripper, and three more gallons of TWP 100 and 10 more hours of pressure wash and paint labor?
Do not worry about it until the rainwater dries off. If it looks good, then no issues. If blotchy or spotty, send pictures.
Thank you! Fingers crossed.
I live in Montana and have coated the deck with the 1500 Series in the past. Do you recommend I use the 2- Part Restore-A-Deck and apply the 100 Pro Series? Is this a better product?
The 1500 and the 100 Series last the same. Just prep and recoat with the same as prior.
I have 2 gallons of 1500 Cedartone left over from last year. I believe the 100 Series is a little better – can I order 2 gallons of the 100 Series and blend them together to get the 4 gallons I need?
No, you should not blend two different series. Colors are not the same as well between series.
PS: I’m in western NC about 1000 feet above sea level. Not humid. Very temperate.
I’m building a deck out of fiberon armourguard Brazilian walnut. I’m fascia mounting wood posts with a matching top rail and doing cable railing. What wood and stain would you recommend for the top rail and 4×4 posts? I could use PT pine or cedar would be a lot more expensive. I’m concerned pine might not take stain very well.
Do not use regular pine. You need PT pine or cedar for outside wood. See here about new wood and TWP https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 100 Series after wait and prep.
Our association has used Twp 100 cedar tone for the last 12 years. The decks have been power washed and stained every other year. Now we have had to replace rotten boards, the decks are cedar. What would be the best color to use to closely match the deck when stained as the whole deck will be stained?
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
In addition, it is not possible to match new and old wood with the TWP semi-transparent color. No matter what, the new wood will stain lighter as it is less absorbent.
I have a dock that has dried for 1 year as per installation instructions of pressure treated lumber. I would like to use the stain sealer but I can not find a local dealer and I am unsure of the color without a chart. Where can I get a color chart?
You can view the color chart above. We also offer samples for testing: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
A year ago, we had a generator spray oil all over our deck. Deck was stained 4-5 years ago so the oil soaked in. Any tips on how to remove the stains before I stain? Will be using the 100 series in Cedar tone. Thanks!
Try a deck stain stripper. I that does not work then you will need to sand it out. https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
I have a brand new deck just built in November 2020. We used Thompson 2&1 sealed/stained it in March 2021 and already it’s turning black. We plan on sanding and starting from scratch. Which product should I use? Keep in mind it is in full sun at least 1/2 of the day and 14 ft off the ground. 680 sq ft. We are after the honey tone color.
Strip and brighten for prep to remove. Sand after stripping if needed. Use the TWP 100 Series or the 1500 Series.
Reply, Thank You! Will buy a 5 gallon of the 1500 tomorrow. don’t by chance have a coupon code for a discount do you. Maybe veteran discounts. just figured i would check b4 purchase.
Sorry, but we do not at the moment.
We just had our deck expanded and all new treated posts and 5/4×6 treated deck boards installed. By the way water beads up on the new wood that the floor surface boards they are not yet ready for staining with TWP 100. I have some questions: Can TWP 100 remain stable in storage in our basement if I buy enough now to stain our deck next spring? Or would it be best to wait and buy it next spring when it’s ready? My other question relates to us installing unfinished 1″x 5″ tongue and groove knotty pine paneling on the underside of the new post supported roof that was constructed to cover 1/2 of our new deck. Since this wood will never be in direct sunlight, rain or snow, will TWP 100 in Clear or Honeytone offer as much protection for this knotty pine wood as the dark oak that we’re planning to use on the rest of our deck? We would like to keep the surface on the underside of the roofed area brighter than the dark oak TWP 100. Thanks
Sorry, missed these questions.
-As long as it is not open.-Use Honeytone for the undersides of the roof, not clear.
Following use of cleaner & brighter, how many days can I wait until applying TWP 100 stain? Unfortunately, there’s forecast for rain on the day we planned to stain.
Try to stain within 14 days of prep.
I have several unopened gallons of new leftover TWP 101 and I am hoping I can mix it with new TWP 1516 series for use on a cleaned and prepped deck.
No, you should not mix the different series.
I used the TWP 100 Redwood stain on my deck last spring and am getting ready to apply another application. I would like to tone down the ‘Red’ color and was thinking of adding a gallon of the Dark Oak to the remaining Redwood stain I have. Is it ok to mix the different colors as long as it is the same TWP 100 Series?
Yes.
What is the shelf life of an unopened gallon can of TWP100 stain? I need to get several more gallons of the same stain; would it be advisable to mix that older stain w/ the newly purchased product before applying it?
2-3 years if unopened. Yes, mix all.
I just applied a test splotch of cedartone on rough cut cedar. It’s a little darker and orange than I would like. If I mixed cedartone with clear would it lighten the color up a bit?
Yes.
How do I dispose of leftover twp 100 stain that is several years old?
Let it harden or add kitty litter to harden. Once done, it can be tossed in the trash.
I’m trying to stain a deck with with TWP 100 on new (6 months) pine deck boards. I want to try and match the existing deck railings somewhat as I don’t want to sand/remove the previous Behr semi-transparent cedar stain. The 101 Cedartone is too yellow and the 102 Redwood is too red. Thought I would try a 50/50 mix to darken and add some red tint to the final finish. Anyone ever do this and any pictures?
You can mix colors. Best to try some samples to test as the final color will vary based on wood type and age of the wood. https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
I sanded, cleaned and brightened my Western Red Cedar deck last summer using the 100 series stain wet on wet which worked well. This spring, the stain is greatly faded, there are areas of algae growth, and it clearly needs to be stained again this year. Should I use one coat or two again this summer after cleaning/brightening?
Once coat after prep.
I had a contractor apply the 100 series product and it rained 4 hours later. Would this have diminished the effectiveness of the stain? Should anything be done?
Let it dry and then if you see spots, send some pictures. If not, then you are okay.
The company wants to come back one week later and apply a second coat of stain. Do you recommend doing a second coat? What happens if it does not absorb across the entire deck? Could I wipe off excess? Thanks Rob
Only apply another coat if the stain can fully absorb into the wood. If you need to wipe off excess, it should be done within 60 minutes of applying. Saturate any oil rags in water.
