TWP 100 Series 5 Gallon Deck Stain
Sorry, but no, it is not possible to have new wood match older wood. The new wood is less absorbent so it will stain lighter in color. Next time you do it in a few years it will blend.
Would staining the two new boards only and allowing them to stand a couple of weeks before staining the whole deck (including the new boards again) help “level” the color?
No, and you cannot apply two coats to new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Several questions – could you please answer all and be specific. Have powerwashed, and used the stripper and brightener. Now waiting on weather, before applying TWP 103.
How long can we wait to stain until having to redo brightener?
What temp range can the stain be applied and dry? Doing wet on wet application (I understand 20-60 minutes between coats).
How long does deck need to dry (in 50-60 deg F temp) before it can handle rain?
-2 weeks
Thanks
We are siding with rough sawn cedar this winter in Iowa, new construction, and want a white pickled look with cedar grain showing through. Is the seafoam semi solid stain you offer our best option? Is it available now ? Thank you, Lin Mullenneaux
Only the semi-solid would offer a color similar to that: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-pro-series
I have a four/five year old deck that was originally coated with your TWP 100 Series stain. This week I sanded and re-applied this same TWP 100 Series product but ran out of stain after a solid two coats on most of the deck. However, the rest of the deck has only one to one and a half coats. I wanted to Purchase additional product and top-coat the whole deck to even it out. Naturally the TWP 100 Series product will take a week to receive and there would be a two week span between applications.
CAN I DO THIS RE-APPLICATON/TOPCOAT WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS???
No, it will not cure and dry correctly at this point. Best to wait until next year, do a light prep, and stain all then.
I was wanting reapplying as well. I recently stained my new rough cut cypress columns in dark oak 3 weeks ago and loved the color. This pass week I noticed the color has lighten from dark brown to a red mahogany. I was wanting to put on another coat to darken the color of columns, but after reading this question and TWP answer I guess it’s out of the question.
Why have my columns lighten so quickly? I mixed stain very well with drill paint mixer. I apply stain in good weather conditions and as directed.
Color after curing is based on the wood type and age.
I need a tan color stain for trim purposes. The rest of the project for the cedar siding will be redwood 102. Any chance you have a similar color or recommend a way to get something close from your company. I may have to get a non transparent type in order to get the color I am looking for.
Sorry but no, TWP does not come in a tan color.
I have a 3 story deck. Pic attached. I’ve been very pleased with Rustic 116. The color is great and I’ve gotten three good years out of the last application. I will be doing a re-coat next spring. Between my deck and boardwalk, I will need 20-25 gallons. Do you do bulk discounts? My local ACE that carries your product won’t.
No, we do not discount at that volume.
Do you ship the 100 Series to VA?
Mid-VA or Southern. It is not allowed in the counties surrounding DC.
I am preparing to re-stain my fence. I have a full 5-gallon unopened pail of TWP 100 left from six years ago, stored in a cool cellar. Do you think it would still be okay to use? It would be one of three that I will need to do the job. Thank you!
It is most likley not good anymore. Shelf life is about 3 years if unopened.
Do you know the estimated shipping time to Oklahoma?
2-6 business days.
That should have been two coats…
Does TWP 100 need t coats on new rough sawed vertical fencing?
Typically yes.
I have been reading the questions and answers and a bit confused. On the site, one of the application methods is spraying it on but in comments, it says it is too thick to spray – which is it? On the site above it says 2 coats but comments say one coat – which is it? Have a older deck that the previous owners painted. It is peeling up and think with a pressure washer, we can get most if not all of it removed. The Brightener- Cleaner guessing would need to be used since the Wood is quite grey where I can see it – is this the only product that works with the 100 series – can’t find it locally so just asking.
You can spray the TWP stains. You cannot use the TWP unless you are able to 100% remove the paint. Clean and brighten after removal.
Does it take 1 coat or 2?
2 coats wet on wet: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
I am in the beginning stages of planning for a 6’ cedar privacy fence. The pickets will be rough sawn and “good” side facing in. The rails will likely be smooth and on the exterior. Would it be advisable to stain the “good” side initially while allowing portions of the exterior to fully dry and allow the wood to breath.
No, do it all at once is best and the easiest. See here for tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Hello, I would like to apply TWP 100 – Prairie Grey 106 to an old deck. 1st, is it more of a redish tint? 2nd, is there a cheap pressure pump sprayer I can use to apply the 1st coat? Something like a 2 gal garden spayer you find at HomeDepot or Lowes? 3rd, what kind of pad should I use for the second (wet-on-wet) coat? Thanks folks!
1. See pics here: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-106-prairie-gray#!TWP_106_Prairie_Gray
2. It is too thick to be sprayed. You will only need one coat.
3. Use a deck stain pad or brush to apply: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/application-tools/brushes-stain-pads
Awesome fast response – Thanks! Quick follow-up: I picked Prairie Gray because I thought it might last an extra season – is that reasonable? What about dark oak? Also, can it not be sprayed because it is one of the gray options? I have myself convinced the grays are a slightly better option.
It will not necessarily last any longer. It cannot be sprayed as it is too thick. Dark Oak would last just as long.
I have a 20 year old Cedar deck, almost at the end of its life. Going to try and get a few more years out of it. Been using Ready Seal Medium Red for the last 14 years, and it has been good, but I thought I would try something different just for fun. TWP 116 Rustic (Nebraska, full sun). Need to replace a few boards. If I decided to use Green Treated lumber instead of Cedar, would there be much of a mismatch with the Rustic color between the two types of lumber? Deck only has a few more years in it and treated is half the price of Cedar here.
New boards will not match older boards as they are less absorbent and will stain lighter in color no matter the wood type.
I am preparing to seal a cedar deck that was installed 12 months ago. My intention was to clean with the restore a deck products first as per instructions and then apply cedar tone 100 series. After talking with my customer, they now like the grey color of the aged cedar and do not want to brighten the look during the initial cleaning process. what would be the recommended preparation for this situation? Also any advice as to the color choice? I’m thinking of using the clear without uv protection or cedar tone. Thanks
The cleaner will remove th gray and the brightener is used to neutralize the cleaner. They should both be done. As for allowing the wood to gray naturally, use the TWP in clear.
Hi, how long after rain can I stain? I’m about to hit the 48 hour mark after using the restore a deck kit but I’ve got some rain in the forecast.
48 hours after rain. Stain within two weeks of prep.
Can I powerwash and stain a cedar fence one side at a time, or should I powerwash it all and then stain? Does it matter?
Prep all first and then stain all when done.
Is there a trick to opening and pouring out of the 5 gallon bucket?
Just pry up the tabs to remove the lid fully. Mix well before using it.
I bought a 5 gallon of twp 100 clear and it’s been sitting in my garage for over a year, what’s the best way to mix it up?
If I wanted to apply twp stain next year, can I go over the clear?
Use a drill mixer attachment for your drill. You would have to strip if switching to a stain color.
How long to deliver to 98407
2 Questions. 1. Is TWP100 ok to ship to Kentucky? 2. I’m looking at a 2 tone project on a deck that has had 90% replaced last summer. The remaining 10% (6X6 posts and stair stringers) have already been stained. What is the proper treatment to the old lumber to make it ready to accept TWP100?
1. Yes.
2. You will have to remove the current stain that is left on the deck first. We would need to see pictures.
Pictures attached
Use the Restore A Deck stripper and brightener kits for the prep on the stain portioned.
Trying to understand the “clear” version of this product. Is the clear version basically considered a sealer? Will the clear version required reapplication sooner (i.e. won’t last as long)?
Clear is a sealer but will not provide UV protection from graying.
We have approx 2,200 sq ft of cedar fence; 1 1/2 years old, never stained or sealed. How many gallons of TWP 100 would we need? And do we need to apply two coats?
Two coats applied wet on wet is needed. About 20 Gallons.
Is this a good stain for patio furniture made from cypress?
Yes.
Hello, I received my TWP 100 stain in Prairie Gray. The color is very orange and looks more like your Pecan or Cedar Tone. There is no gray color in this stain at all. Last year I purchased the Cape Cod Gray and it looks very blue. Not like the sample on your web page. This year I went with the Prairie Gray and it looks very orange. Again, not like the sample on your web page. My ideal color would be something in-between. Please see picture attached. The floor of the deck is Cape Cod and what I have started is Prairie. Can you please send me some pigment that I can add to the 5 gallon can that will tone down the orange and make this color more of a tan/beige gray?
Sorry, but we cannot send pigment. You can though mix the two colors together.
When doing the second “wet on wet” coat, what is the minimum amount of time to let the first coat soak in? If parts of the stained deck are dry to the touch in a half hour is it already too late, even though the specifications state the stain takes 4-24 hours to dry?
See here for tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
20-60 minutes after the first coat is ideal.
Hello — will 5 gallons be sufficient on an 850 square foot freshly sanded Western Red Cedar deck? No railings. The deck is over 20 years old so it’s very well seasoned and maybe a little thirsty(?). I will be using one of those large Deck Boss brushes to apply.
Thank you!
Not for two coats. You will need 8-10 gallons.
Thank you for the quick reply!
A follow up question please — is there anything preventing the use of a few newly purchased kiln-dried replacement boards before I finish? In other words, does the cedar need to weather for a year or so like I’ve seen posted frequently. I could install, then sand the whole deck. But I also could just buy the wood and sit on it for a year, replacing bad boards next year prior to re-coating the deck.
Thanks again – very helpful resource!
New KDAT wood does need to weather: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/kdat-and-twp-wait-period-for-new-wood/
Now that link you posted for KDAT wood refers to TREATED wood – presumably pressure treated(?), if I read it correctly.
What I’d be using is untreated, milled Western Red Cedar right out of the forest that has then been kiln dried – i.e., not treated lumber.
Does that change the recommendation at all?
Thanks again — it’s really helpful!
No change.
Roger that. I’ll measure up the replacements needed and will age it until next season.
Thanks again!
which stains a deck better 100 or 1500 series
They are equally as good.
can 100 series be shipped to alabama
Yes.
can this be used on a fence that has been stained several times already?
Only if the previous brand was TWP otherwise you would have to remove the current coatings.
Can a clear (such as semi gloss) be applied over the top of the TWP100 stains? Do you have a recommendation of what product to use?
No, you cannot add anything on top. It will peel.
Thank you! I would much prefer having a gloss-type finish on the decking. Do I have any good alternatives?
You cannot have a gloss coating on a deck, it will peel and blister and will be a huge mess to sand off.
I found an unopened 5 gallon pail of TWP 100 in my basement that is from 2014. I opened it and stirred it well for about 20 minutes. All of the solids dissolved, with no clumps remaining. Is it safe to use?
Yep.
Can this stain (twp 100) be applied to a fence?
Yes.
How long will it take to get the color sample I requested and how long will it take to receive 5 gallon pails of stain after I have ordered it? I am looking to begin a project relatively soon. I have two decks and a massive fence that are made of treated pine and have never been stained. The deck is about 2 years old and the fence is about 4 years old. I have a pressure washer but am also looking to clean and brighten them. Should I use Restore-a-deck or Gemini or what cleaner/brightener? Do I need one coat or two on the deck and do I need less on the fence? I have a grace magnum x7 paint sprayer for the projects- do you think that will suffice? Thanks so much for the assistance!
Shipping times are varied due to Covid-19 and ar longer than normal. As for the prep, use the Gemini Restore Kit for all. 2 coats applied wet on wet for both. You can spray but you will need to back brush to ensure a uniform application.
My deck is about 270 sq ft. I am getting confused about how many gallons I will need to do my deck in total. The deck was made with pressure treated wood 15 years ago. Also, if I were to get 5 gal and not use it all, does it “expire” after so much time?
About 3 gallons for two coats. Shelf life if opened is 12 months.
We have a home in Boone, NC, elevation about 3000, with cedar siding. It was built and stained in 2005. I don’t think retained since. We have a painter who will pressure wash and then apply stain. Wa want to go with TWP100. Planning two coats. Does this sound reasonable?
As long as the previous coating is removed, then yes.
Will pressure washing suffice as the kind of removal you’re talking about? Hopefully it will since a more aggressive treatment like sanding is not feasible–large house, and I think sanding would not be good for the siding.
That depends on the coating type?
The previous coating was a stain, probably semi transparent. The painters we had give us an estimate all felt comfortable applying a new stain. We’re going with two coats. But I just wanted to check with you as a second opinion. The pressure washing will probably remove some of the previous stain but it’s being done also, mainly, to remove surface mildew.
I have a wood theme going in my home that basically mixes ebony or jacobean with classic gray (minwax colors) and ends up being a nice dark tone with hints of gray and brown. Need to do a very large deck soon, was wonder if anyone has combined TWP100 colors successfully? It looks like Cape Cod Gray mixed with Dark Oak might achieve a similar result?
You would have to test it with some samples to see if it will work for you.
I’m building a rough cut cedar picket fence, and have about 1000 boards to install. I was going to build a dunk tank and back brush off the excess. Will this work. Boards will will be fully dry and brushed off of miling sawdust.
If rough cut, then yes.
I see that your jailed in taking new orders due to the “stay home” order, when when will you be taking new orders?
Hopefully within a week. ou can sign up for emails thee to receive a notification as to when.
planning to stain a 3 year old treated pine fence, should i use the cleaner and brightener first? Thanks
Yes. Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
We are currently in the process of building our deck with treated pine. Is there anything we would need to put down on the wood before staining it with the TWP100? I’m new to this and I don’t want to mess up the process.
We will also be attaching this deck to a pre-existing deck around our pool that was stained, then painted. I will be pressure washing & sanding the paint off of that section. Can I use this same product so that the new deck will flow into the old deck? If so, is there anything else I need to do to prepare the ‘old’ deck?
Thanks!!
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
You will need to remove all the current stain from the older deck. Once that is done, you can use the same stain.
Good morning,
Where can I find this color of stain
TWP 207/103? Thank you.
Those are two different colors:
https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-100-series
https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
want to reapply stain to twp stain i already have on my fence. Do I need to put a prep on it or just clean it with my power waster
You will need to prep it. Use this while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
We are in the process of building an event venue in North carolina near the South carolina border. The company is recommending your 100 series. Questions;
1) we are building close to a lake. Why are some states not allowing your 100 series product and is it harmful to water sources/ lakes?
2) If north carolina regulates your product (VOC) in the future, do we have another compatible option?
3)The building will be 84′ x 90′ any recommendation on how to apply it wet on wet?
4) Can it be applied by spray?
5) Is there a discount if purchased in bulk to accommodate this sized of a building as well as a small cabin to be also built on site?
Thank you
Mark Schingen
1. Certain states have lower VOC laws that do not allow the 100 Series. The TWP is not harmful to water when dry but you cannot spill it into the water when in liquid form.
2. NC does not have any potential VOC changes on the horizon but if they did change, use the TWP 1500 Series.
3. You do not apply two coats to new wood. See this for new wood tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
4. Yes, but you will have to back wiped.
5. Sorry but no.
We would be using it for a deck, western red cedar. We live in S. California Mountains, 5,000 foot elevation, snow, occasional wet snow, temperature range 10℉ to 105℉. Would the TWP100 be a good choice?
For CA VOC laws, you need the TWP 1500 Series. https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
Works great.
I have a 600sf all Cypress porch that I just got finished pressure washing to make the boards look new. What product should I use, how much, and how long should I let the wood drive before applying?
Which product to stain with depends on where you live? How much you need depends on the age of the wood? Let dry for at least 48 hours before applying.
Live in South Louisiana, age of wood is two years.
About 5-6 gallons for the two coats applied wet on wet. Use the TWP 100 Series.
If applied correctly and prepped correctly, what is the expected time of needing to re-stain with using twp100 ?
2-3 years is normal for a deck.
I have a new pressure treated wood deck, it has weathered now for about 6 months. I live in SC, my deck gets a lot of afternoon sun. If I use twp 100 series stain, should it be a semi oil based stain and do I need to apply a brightner and or deck restore. Thank you Gary
Yes, you have to prep with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
TWP is a semi-transparent stain oil-based stain only.
Using a Graco Painter Plus Airless Sprayer, would a 311 tip work best with TWP 100. Or should I get a bigger tip?
Sorry, but we are not familiar with their tips. Any fan tip should work. Wider is easier.
What is the difference between the 100 series and the 1500 series?
https://www.twpstain.com/difference-between-twp-100-and-1500-series
