TWP 100 Series 5 Gallon Deck Stain
trying to decide on stain color for a new cedar deck that was laid 30 days ago. How do I select a color (considering dark oak) and knows that it will be the true color on the deck? Have some left over pieces in the storage area which I could stain, but they have not been weathered.
You cannot stain your new wood yet: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
As for colors, test some samples: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Why not on staining the deck boards…they are cedar and the moisture content is less than12%…my question is if I stain leftover boards will the color be close to the color on the deck boards?
New wood has nothing to do with moisture content or wood type but porosity. You have to weather them for four or more months after installation and then prep. You cannot skip this. I’m not sure what you are asking with your second question. Please rephrase.
Does the “cape cod grey” work on a new cedar fence – ie. would the yellow/red of the cedar shine through and just result in a strange hue?
Look at the TWP Semi-solid colors as they will look better for this fence. There are more options for gray as well.

Can the Total Wood Preservative be applied with a garden sprayer?
A quality pump sprayer, not a cheap one.
I painted my deck with TWP 101 around 3 years ago. Should I strip and paint again or use restore kit and paint over it. I will use same TWP 101. Here is the condition of the deck.
Use this kit:

I applied twp 100 series honeytone stain to the exterior of my log(pine) home in the summer of 2020. I just finished lightly power washing the exterior and wondering if I can apply the clear series instead of the honeytone this time around. I like the color the logs are now after power washing and do not want to darken the logs anymore. If I apply a light coat of the honeytone I am afraid it will darken the logs more. I notice the clear series does not have UV protection. What do you suggest I do? Thanks Gene
No, do not apply clear over the stained colors.
What prep work do I have to do if I am reapplying TWP after one year of the original application. Last year I went through all the steps to get my wood to raw wood and now I want to reapply.
Use the Gemini Restore Kit when reapplying:

When I go to stain under deck (10 ft above ground) and railings I would like to use my Magnum X5. The tip I have is a 515 they recommend a 311 for stain, what do you recommend for TWP 100 Ceadertone
311.

Hi. I have hired a contractor to build a 12×36 deck in western NM (high desert), and he is using rough cut / untreated lumber. All will be above grade. Which product would you recommend using to protect it? Thank you.
Are you sure it is rough cut decking? Never heard of this being used on a deck surface. Pics?
I have a new boat dock flooring made with pressure treated pine. I live in North Carolina on lake Norman. Dock gets full day sun. Which semi-transparent stain should I use?
TWP 100 Series.
What kind of prepping do I need to do on new pressure treated pine. It has aged 3 months already.

Can i use 100 series stain on interior walls in my shop?
It is designed for exterior wood. While it could be used inside, that would vary based on the wood type.
It is 1×6 douglas fir and western red cedar it covers 8 feet up sheetrocked 15 foot walls. It is decorative as well as protecting the walls. I’m also using it on the ceiling and wall of the exterior covered area. I want it to match the inside walls.
Go for it but it will have an odor so make sure you can ventilate well.
I want a slightly lighter shade of Rustic semi-transparent. Can I mix 1 or 2 gallons of clear (#100) with 5 gallons of Rustic semi-transparent (#116)?
Yes, you can!
I have been using Penofin on my deck every year for a decade. Each year I prep with oxyclean first, then oxalyic acid. Let dry 4 days. Stain. I would like to switch to TWP. Is there anything different I need to do in my process?
Strip and Brighten for prep to remove the Penofin fully: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
What would be the closet color match in the semi solids series to cedartone 101?
There is not a matching color. Best to test some samples: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Hello, is this stain a good choice for a new fence? Thanks!
Yes, works great on fences!
Hi,
I live in Ohio. I wanted to stain my deck with the cape cod grey. There is supposed to be nice weather all week so my plan was to sand deck, clean and brighten, let dry for a day or two then stain. Does the 100 series cape cod gray ship in Ohio? And any recommendations for me on the deck? First timer.
No, it is not allowed in OH. You can use the Slate Gray in the 200 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-200-series
I want to apply two coats how long should I wait in between coats?
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
Do you have solid series or just semi solid?
We do not have a solid stain.
How long after applying the cleaner & brightener do we need to wait to apply the stain? And how long does the stain need to dry prior to rain/getting wet?
48 hours after prep or rain to stain. No rain for 12-24 hours.
We applied one coat of 103 on our new deck (after waiting 8 months), is it recommended to put another coat on this year?
Only if needed. Post a picture or two.
I put the cedar tone TWP (Canadian version) this year on white cedar that was new last year. I like how it turned out. Happy so far, I probably was supposed to wait for the cedar to dry longer or do some prep work but I didn’t read instructions. Im not to concerned as it will be out of the weather shortly with a canopy over the deck.
How to take off lid on 5 gallon lid and pour stain?
Pry up each tab with a flat head screwdriver.
Is the 100 series prairie grey color, semi transparent? I like the color, but dont want to be putting solid stain on my deck.
Closer to semi-solid.
Would it be more prone to chipping and wearing away then on my high traffic areas opposed to using a more semi transparent stain?
No. Wears the same.
And I would also re apply it the same in a few years? clean, brighten, reapply?
Correct.
Hi,
I live by the ocean in massachusetts. I have a pressure treated pine or fir deck thats about 5 years old and it takes alot of weather and salt from the ocean. We are past due to put on the first coat of stain and looking at this 100 series product. any recommendations? Thanks!
You need the 1500 Series for MA: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
What’s the difference between 100 & 103 stain?
The “3” is the color. Dark Oak 103.
Ship to Ontario,
Canada?
Only the 200 Series is allowed for Canada: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
Hi – hard to tell in the photos: would you suggest the “finish” as compared to interior paints is flat eggshell or satin? Our exterior project needs a satin finish…THANKS
TWP stains have no shine.
Last year I fully stripped my deck with your restore-a deck and gemini products, replaced bad boards and then applied your 100 series Honeytone stain. The improvement was great. The stain was sucked up into the boards so much, especially the old ones, that I did not have enough stain to get a full two coats wet on wet.
I was advised not to try to add more stain after it had dried, to wait at least 6 months then wash and brighten the deck with the Gemini kit. This week I washed and brightened the deck on Monday morning. I let it dry for 2 full days. The weather was great with mid to high 70s and full sun. Yesterday afternoon I then applied a new coat of Honeytone 100.
Unfortunately today the full deck has a sheen to it and there are some spots that are shiny (they look like the stain is still wet even though it isn’t.) Having read through your site and others it seems to indicate that stain was did not absorb. I was careful not to soak the boards with stain. Because of the age of the boards, it’s defintely possible in some spots it pooled but I’m not sure how I would know it wasn’t going to absorb until it was too late. Certainly on 90% plus of the deck I did not overapply the stain. I know I followed the Gemini instructions fully in washing and bightening the deck and that it was fully dry before staining.
So my questions are:
1) shy of fully stripping the whole deck and going through the whole process again, is there anything I can do to somewhat dull down the sheen and remove the shiny spots while still maintaing the protection?
2) Is there a product I can appy in much the same way that the deck wash and/or brightener is applied? Would using those products achieve the desired result? I have read that I could try rubbing it down with a cloth soaked in mineral spirits but that would be a large task to do and I would be worried it would ruin the stain protection properties.
3) Lastly, while not ideal, what if I did nothing? Will the sheen and shiny spots eventually dull down and will the stain protections still work.
Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.
https://twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-is-spotty-or-shiny/
If you leave it alone it will be fine and the shine will dull down.
Thank you – Fingers Crossed
is it best to spray or hand brush the stain on a fence.
Easier to spray but brushes and pads give a more uniform appearance. Many spray and then back brush.
We stained our deck last year with the TWP 100 Cedartone 101 and need to put another coat down this year. Can we use a different TWP 100 color to make it a little darker?
After you prep with this, yes: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Yes, i have the prep kit but what do you recommend for the stain if i live in seattle wa
The TWP 100 Series.
What twp is recomebded here in seattle wa, cedar new gates and fence previously stained with twp 2 + years agl. Thanks
The TWP 100 Series. Prep with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Is there a twp 100 series clear/transparent? I want the natural wood look. Goal: To prolong the graying that occurs and make the wood last as long as possible. If not, is there a clear two that’s similar outcome to the 100 series you can recommend? I will be applying this to 7-8 yr old treated wood pressure-washed 14 x16 deck. How many gallons should I buy? Appreciate the response!
Thank you. Julia?
The stain must be tinted for UV protection. Try the Honeytone color for the lightest tint.
See this for amount: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-deck-stain-calculator
can twp redwood stain be applied to a first generation trek deck? How long will a 2 coat application last? and finally how much will I need to cover a deck 10 feet by 30 feet 2 feet high with no rail 2 steps down to yard.
Sorry but not suggested for composite decking.
Do I need to do prep work on new rough cut cedar?
No need.
Would you go with one or two coats? And do you think the 1500 series would be better?
2 coats. The 1500 would be a good choice.
What is best to re stain a deck that previously was stained with semi transparent Pecan stain?
The same color and series. Prep first.
If I buy a 5 gallon pail of stain, how long will it last before it expires? I need to finish a small project this year, but will need to use the remaining 4 gallons on a project in spring 2023.
In opened, the shelf life is about 12 months as long as it is stored corectly.
Ok, thank you for replying. How should it be stored, (just to make sure I do store it correctly)?
Cannot freeze. Lid 100% sealed.
Is the TWP 100 transparent or semi-transparent?
Semi-trans and it does not mask or hide the grain. You can view photos here: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
What is wet on wet?
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
what’s the difference between 100 and 1500 series?

Just finished a new cedar deck. How long should I wait to stain with twp 100? Live in Illinois and would like to stain before winter
See here and you will need the 1500 Series for IL: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Can I apply with an airless sprayer? If so, what size tip is recommended?
Yes. Any tip size will work.
Not my question above, but I can go with that. We purchased a color that will not work on our deck. With a sprayer I can apply the oil between cedar fence planks, 1/4~3/8 gaps in a timely manner. Yay.
It will most likely not get in there very well due to the small gap size.
What’s the shelf life of TWP100 series?
Unopened about 3 years. Opened about 12 months.
I just built a fence about 6 inches from another fence. Is it important to stain both sides of the fence or can I get away with just staining the exposed side?
Both sides would be better.
Is 90F max for the application only, or 90F max for the entire day, even if the TWP was applied prior to the temp going above 90F perhaps up to 105F for the max temp of the day while the TWP is drying? I wouldn’t want to start a flash fire even if I stopped staining at 10AM at temps below 90F.
While applying and drying. It would not start a fire but it could flash dry and be spotty or uneven.
How many square feet of rough cut pine will 1 gallon cover? I will be painting the wood once the TWP dries.
About 150 sq feet per gallon.
I stained my pressure treated fence 3 years ago and would like to stain it again. The forecast for this weekend is upper 90’s, high humidity. Heat index over 100. Any issues with staining at these temperatures/humidity?
Max temp is 90 for application.
Can bugjuice be added to the 100?
Yes, it can.
We are using for our fence which is 4 feet high and approx 25x60x20. How much stain is recommended
What is the total length of your fence in feet?
Approx 150
For both sides, you have roughly 1200 sq feet. About 10-15 gallons if doing two coats applied wet on wet.
Can I apply a mold and mildew resistant primer film on my wood before applying twp 100? We will only be staining joists and not the wood on top as after replacing number boards due to rot we have decided to go with composite on top but they want to protect the joists and we have lots of TWp left over from staining our deck 2 yrs ago.
No, you cannot apply a coating prior to applying the TWP.
I used the honey pine before twp 100. After several years and cleaning and brighting the wood -can I now use cape cod gray? Also I love the honey pine how it soaked into the wood and wasn’t ever even able to chip or scratch- is the cape cod gray the same?
You would have to strip and then brighten to switch. The cape cod is more of a semi solid.
I have stripped and brightened. I’m wondering if the cape cod Is similar – in that it’s soaks in instead of sitting on top like other semi transparent stains? The honey just soaked in and couldn’t peal or chip because it don’t sit on top- is that how cape cod gray is too?
Yes, but more semi-solid in appearance.
