1500 Series and Deck Stain 1 Gallon
We live in Illinois and just had a new cedar deck installed a few days ago. Our contractor said the wood was already dry, so we did not need to let it weather. Just wanted to confirm we can proceed w/staining using the 1500.
No, he is wrong. See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I was led to believe the same thing…….after a disaster of a stain job, I’ve been working for three years to correct the problem. The stain will not “take” and you’ll have to completely strip it and go thru all the effort to get your deck ready for proper staining.
We’ve stripped the color off our 25+ old deck. What’s the best product – 100 or 1500?
Where do you live?
We have a rough cut cedar arbor built abt 4 weeks ago. Ready to stain and family member recommended TWP —- should I go with the TWP 100 series or the 1500 series? Ready to order.
Use the TWP 1500 Series.
I’ve done it and got fantastic results. I’m out here in the field and have tried many different things. I don’t want to crawl through stain to back wipe. That’s just me and my customers are fine with the time and money spent.
I have a wooden arbor at the front of my house that was originally stained in Nov 2008 with TWP Shake and Shingle in color Butternut 206. This stain in 50% of areas (in sun) looks incredible still. However, it needs to be refreshed due to some areas that face east and get beaten up by sun. What product (100 or 1500, etc.) would you recommend to redo this arbor with?
Stay with the TWP 200 Series in Butternut: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-200-series
On wood like Mahogany, stain is suppose to be applied in small sections so that extra stain can be wiped off. You are suppose to apply the stain, let it sit for about 20 minutes and then wipe off the stain that didn’t soak into the wood. Looks like you pick one of those cheap fixer guys instead of paying for someone who knows what they are doing. Oh, and after the stain dries, you’re suppose to put a clear coat on top.
No, you cannot add a clear coat on top of a deck stain like TWP. In addition, you can apply TWP to all the wood and back wipe the areas as needed within 60 minutes. You do not have to do this in sections.
Had a local painter apply onto my mahogany deck within my screened in porch this past Monday. Some spots appear dry while other spots appear shiny and still wet. Is this normal over a day later?
Sounds like it was over applied. See this: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-is-spotty-or-shiny/
Can I use 1500 series on interior redwood cabinets?
Thank you!
Sorry, but no.
Good Morning. I am going to chemically strip the peeling acrylic finish and stain with TWP 1500 series. I am only going to do the horizontal surface, as the rails are okay. Could you tell me which color will best match the rails? It is a very old weathered deck.
That stain looks very thick like a solid stain. A stripper will not remove a solid stain. You would need to sand it off.
I was going to use the stripper first just on the deck floor and then sand it. Could you suggest what color would best match to railings?
Maybe Cedartone but not really possible to match this as it is a solid color. Might want to try some samples: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
I am not going to be overly fussy about the match. It looks so bad now, anything will be an improvement. If you look at the picture and see how peeled it is, do you think using a chemical stripper would help at all, or should I just sand it?
The stripper with pressure washing will remove some, making it easier to sand.
i have a Mahogany front porch, w
do you have a color for Mahogany or the closest recommendation
Rustic would be the correct color.
How long should I wait to clean/brighten/stain a deck that has been soaked with rain fall?
48 hours.
Why is it necessary to let new wood age for 12 months prior to application? What would happen if it was stained as new? Thanks.
It is 4-12 months. See this article: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
If you stain it new without weathering, it will fail.
Thanks. Shouldn’t the weathering period be different for pressure treated vs. un-pressure treated wood? Thanks.
Nope.
I live in Massachusetts. I have an older PT deck that was treated with Behr opaque acrylic stain (more of a paint really). It is a peeling nightmare after only 1 year. I would like to chemically strip it, sand it and then apply an oil based stain such as yours (probably the dark oak). Do you have any recommendations?
Stripping will not remove it fully so power sanding will be needed. After full sanding, you can use the TWP 1500 Series.
Have a merabu deck, what color would you recommend?
Rustic 1516.
I am redoing my deck horizontal surfaces. I will be powerwashing. My deck over hangs onto the lake. Is the wood/deck cleaner environmentally safe? There is no way of me preventing it from going into the lake when powerwashing.
The Cleaner and Brightener is Eco-Safe.
I have a screen porch that i have 1×6 tounge and grove pine on that im replacing after 20 years. Which one of these products would be best to use? I will need a natual color.
See this about TWP and new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Use the 1500 or 100 Series.
I have to stain new wood under soffits, won’t be exposed to weather or sun light. How should I proceed with staining
See this for tips on new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
The wood is under the soffit facing down and does not get weather or uv, prepping for new wood doesn’t cover wood outdoors with no no exposure
If smooth wood you still need to let it weather to dry out and to prep to remove the mill glaze.
If the night time temperatures drop below 40 degrees, is it still a good time to use the 1500 series stain.
As long as it does not drop below freezing at night.
I have a gallon of the old 500 series TWP in light cedar. I bought it from a bamboo company to be used on a bamboo fence. What color in the 1500 series will be the closest in color to the light cedar,
thank you for your assistance
Neither the 500 or the 1500 will work on Bamboo. Only the 300 Series and we do not stock that series.
Can I blend colors? I’d like to mix TWP 1500 Redwood and Rustic.
Yes can you can mix colors of the same series.
About 11 month old new pressure treated pine deck, shows some signs of graying (live in Louisiana…) do I still need to clean and brighten prior to using this stain. Also looking for a lighter color that resembles the pine when it is wet. So California redwood?
Yes, you have to prep with the Gemini Restore Kit. Honeytone is the lightest tint. See here for some pictures: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
Right now my decks are currently dark oak 1503 I would like to put a maintenance coat on it but try to keep it from getting much darker what are your suggestions. Was thinking just a coat of the natural because I want to UV protection
When reapplying a maintenance coat, you will need to use the same color as before to ensure an even application of final color.
what do you have that allows the natural color of the wood to show.. I was told you have a clear coat already and that I could find it but nothing shows up as clear. I already ordered 5 gal of the wrong color I don’t want to do that again. thanks.. Lynda bowers
We have “clear” but a clear will not provide UV protection and will gray naturally. It is easily found on our product ordering pages by choosing your color in the drop-down color choices before adding to cart.
We are applying to a new redwood lath patio cover. How long should we wait to apply for best penetration?
See this about TWP and new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
what are the differences between your 1500 and 100 series stains?
See this for some tips: https://www.twpstain.com/difference-between-twp-100-and-1500-series
Can the TWP 1500 be applied with an airless spray gun?
Yes.
I intend to stain vertical wood fence. May be from redwood planks, not sure, but it is relatively light. I would not want this fence to get darker. We are in San Francisco, this fence faces north and gets perhaps 2-3 hours of sunlight/day (see also my previous note). What do you recommend? What is the drawback of “clear” stain?
Clear will have no UV protection from graying. Must be tinted. Try the Honeytone for the lightest tint.
I used TWP1530 Naturel on deck and it became much darker. I expected that the tone will be the same. What is your stain with the “lightest” tone?
Honeytone 1515 is the lightest.
I have had cedar decking in my garage for a month on racks waiting for some free time to use replacing some old pressure treated lumber on our dock. Being on a rack it is getting real good air circulation. I was unsure what I wanted to stain and protect it with but your product is highly recommended. I want to apply the stain prior to installing. Reading your prep suggestions says I should wait 4 months before applying, which means I won’t be able to install until next year as we are in Wisconsin and 4 months puts us when our dock is no longer in the water. Do I need to wait that long, and if so can the wood remain in garage or does it need to be in the weather. Also, should I stain all sides of wood since it will be over water? Which of your products would you recommend, the 100 or 1500 series? Thanks
Yes, you have to wait the 4-12 months and has to be installed outside for those 4-12 months. No need to stain all sides, just the exposed wood after install, wait, and prep: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Which series to use depends on the state you live in?
Does 1500 contain anything that will inhibit the attack of boring bees? If not, do you know of an additive I can put into the 1500 product?
Hello Tom,
You would need to add this into the stain: https://www.twpstain.com/bug-juice-insecticide
I previously used 1530 on a deck, fence and pergola project. I had a couple gallons left over and am using those on a new chicken coop. I’m now worried that it may not be safe for this use.
Do you have any advice on its safety for a chicken coop (wanted to match the same tone, etc.)? Also, is there any way to seal over this? With, say, a polyurethane or similar product, that would make it safe if it is not, in fact, safe for this use?
The TWP 1500 series is a full curing stain. Once it is cured, it is fine for a chicken coop. We have had other people use it in this capacity.
You cannot top coat TWP with a sealer or poly.
How long does it take for the TWP 1500 to cure?
A week.
Also, the TWP 1500 would be applied to many interior surfaces of the coop as well. Does that change anything re: safety?
Once fully cured, there should be no issues.
I have a 1 year old cedar fence, which redwood stain do you recommend, twp 100 or 1500
The TWP 1500 Series.
This will be the first stain it is receiving.
Clean and brighten the prep with this prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I live in Illinois. Last year I put up a 10′ x 10′ Cedar Pergola. I’m now looking to stain it. Do I need to sand or brighten it first being so new or can I just stain it?
After stripping an brightening do you recommend sanding? There are raised wood fibers.
also the stripper and brightener came from Sherwin Williams. Will this effect the final outcome?
It shouldn’t. Lightly sand or buff the floor to remove raised wood fibers with 60 grit paper if needed.
I stained my deck 3-4 years ago with TWP 350 max voc formula. Part of the deck is under roof and has not weathered as much as the parts that are exposed. I live in Pennsylvania so I’m not sure what formula to use or how deck should be prepared. I would like to re-stain with the same color #1530 natural.
To ensure an even application, prep with this: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/applying-a-maintenance-coat-of-twp/
It will be very easy.
I stained some patio furniture, how long before it will be safe it sit on without color coming off on clothes?
I put 2 coats on the horizontal surfaces, in 70 degree weather. After cleaning and pressure washing, allowing that the dry 3 days.
A few days and it should be okay but test first. Could take as long as a week.
i have a deck that is stained with a solid water base stain( 3 years ago) so if i strip it power wash it and put wood brightener on iy will i be able to use TWP 1500 oil stain on it once it dries completely.
You cannot strip off a solid stain. You will need to remove by sanding this off. Once removed, use the Gemini Restore Kit for the final prep.
Follow-up from Phil, 6/17/18. I live in central North Carolina, near Greensboro.
BTW, thanks for the prompt reply, especially on a Sunday.
Use the TWP 100 Series. NP!
Have a 4-year old deck of 2X6 treated pine. Have stripped (Cabot semi) and brightened with Restore-a-Deck. What is the difference between your Series 1500 vs. 100? Which do you recommend? Also would I gain significantly from the extra process of sanding?
Sanding is not needed and can create issues with absorption. As for which type, that depends on where you live?
Does 1500 series prevent damage by carpenter bees?
No. Deck stains will not prevent damage by bees. You can add this though: https://www.twpstain.com/bug-juice-insecticide
My deck includes (pressure treated southern pine) built-in benches. Some stains from other manufacturers specify “not for sitting surfaces or furniture”. (I assume this is because clothing may get stained). Are any of your oil-based stains suitable for sitting surfaces?
Yes. TWP is a full curing stain so it does not rub off.
I just put new Pressure-Treated on my deck, its been at least 9 months exposed and ready I’m ready to stain it, looking for the most natural look as it like the contrast between the black square spindles and the light current color of the wood. Is the natural or the honey the lightest color?
Honeytone is the lightest color.
I live in Illinois and wanted to see a sample, where could I find one?
See samples for testing here:
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Is the cape cod gray still available? I got a sample in the summer and would like to purchase. Thanks
Cape Cod is only available in the TWP 100 series.
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-100-series
we have installed a new redwood deck and wanted to use this product, do you have anything natural clear without tint? Transparent
“Clear” with no tint is available but a clear will not protect from UV graying. If you do not want your wood to gray, you must use a tinted color. In addition, see this about new wood:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Would Smith Contractor 190216 2-Gallon Sprayer be good enough to spray TWP 1500?
That sprayer looks “cheap”. Not sure how well it will work. See this for spraying tips:
https://www.twpstain.com/how-to-apply-twp-stain-with-a-sprayer
I see that you recommend the Chapin 25020, I read some reviews that it keeps clogging, how would one prevent that if I were to use the Chapin 25020 with TWP 1500
Clogging has nothing to do with the actual sprayer but the material going through it. If the Stain or Cleaner is mixed properly with a smooth consistency, then you will not clog the sprayer.
Hello, we just built a new home in Central Missouri. We have used cedar beams on the exterior and would like to preserve the existing fresh cedar color. What would be the best product for sealing and longevity?
Also we have a lake house that has oak logs and never been sealed. We would wand just a clear wood preservative on the logs.
“Clear” = zero UV protection with wood stains from graying. Do you want it to gray naturally? If not, you must use a stain and that will enhance the wood grain. You can see the color choices above.
OK, clear on the Oak Logs. I do not want the new Cedar to gray, so a stain.
So I am assuming the 1500. Correct?
Will I be able to re apply the same product (s) down the road if needed without major prep work?
Yes on the 1500 Series. For reapplication, just clean and recoat.
WOW, I love this service! Thank you very much!
I would like to apply stain to external posts and beams that are Doug Fir surrounds over structural posts. They were originally stained by the contractor with a stain that wasn’t appropriate (Briwax). The posts and beams are in various states of still fully stained (those without sun exposure) to bleached white. From what I’ve read, TWP 1500 is the right stain product. What products/process should I use to prep the ones that are bleached white vs. the ones that still have some stain on them. Also, can you please direct me to the page that has coverage information. I live in the San Francisco Bay area so don’t have cold winter issues. Thanks.
Hello, the TWP cannot be applied over either so it will need to be removed. Power sanding may be the way to go. Once all of the current stain and coatings are removed, you can use the TWP. Coverage is 150-200 sq feet per gallon.
I have stained a pavilion beams and headers, with twp 106. Can I go over that with a TWP 1500? I see someone previously asked the reverse version of this question.
No, you cannot. The 106 will need to be removed first.
can this be used on pressure treated 2×6 planks on trailer floor? trailer is new but has been exposed to weather (Arizona) for a year. Not concerned with appearance but want max preservative for wood.
Yes, it can.
