1500 Series and Deck Stain 1 Gallon
i used twp1530 (after applying defy cleaner and brightener) for my new deck this april. now the deck begins to have some dark strips. shall i restain now or wait? shall i use deck cleaner and brightenner or stripper this time?
Wait until next year. Clean and brighten again for prep.
thank you! for restain , just one coat or two coats? is it normal to have dark stripes after 6 month. I am in NC. the rail looks good now but the horizontal surface looks soaked
Hard to say without seeing a picture as to the cause. Just one coat would work.
We are having a colored Pine table being built for outdoors. See attached picture. The “blue” coloring will turn brown without protection. Was recommended by the shop to look at your product for a “wet on wet” protection. We live in Colorado at 7,500′ elevation and the sun can be really tough on wood products. Want to get the best protection for uv and the wood, but be as clear as possible to enjoy the wood coloring. Thanks for your help!
Hello,
See this first about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
After the wait, prep, you can apply one coat to the new wood. Honeytone is the lightest tinted stain with UV protection.
I prepped my deck to be stained. I was ready to use anther product, until I came across TWP 1500 semi- transparent stain and the reviews. I live in northern Illinois, and can’t use TWP 100.
I am considering TWP 1530 (natural) 0r TWP 1515 (Honeytone). How much darker is the Honeytone compared to the natural?
Jim B
Honeytone is lighter than Natural: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
I used TWP on my deck over five years ago (too long I know) and I am now looking to re-stain. Which preparation would you recommend and how many coats of stain? Thanks
Prep with this and pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Two coats.
Thanks!
I already stripped the water based stain off my deck with a Behr stripper and will clean it using the Behr cleaner, brightener. Can I now use TWP 1500 stain after using these Behr products to strip and clean. Sorry, not optimal, but I just found out about your stain. I was going to use a Behr stain.
As long as it is cleaned well and free of previous coatings, you should be okay.
Thanks for the quick reply!
hi. i sanded the stain off of our mahogany deck with 40 grit and then 80 grit. Do I have to use a stripper because I realize there is stain between the deck boards that I can not sand off? Also, can I stain now or do I have to use a cleaner and brightener?
Clean and brighten after sanding. Nore sure if you need to stop between the boards but that would be up to you as it may show through.
Is there a clear twp 1500 stain? I live in Maine, so I can’t use the 100 series but would like to keep and preserve the weathered gray color on my existing cedar decks. I’m also putting in a new cedar deck, should I use a roller to cover the vertical sides of the wood before installing the deck on the pressure treated frame? thank you very much.
Clear is an option when you choose the color in the drop-down color choices. No need to coat the verticals prior.
WE have a 30 year old redwood deck and am happy to say that it has held up great using your products. However there is an area that gets more sun and weather and needs new boards to replace them. After sanding the old boards(testing on those removed) they absorb the stain(california redwood) very differently with some going redish or yellow and others going almost black. Is there a way to get a more consistent outcome with retaining? Is sanding an issue? Also worried about how to blend color with the new wood and how soon to apply stain on new wood?
Any suggestions?
For prep, you should strip and brighten the older wood, not sand. It is not possible though to get new wood to match older wood. The new wood will stain lighter since they are less absorbent.
The fix for getting all boards to look the same is to use an interior hardwood stain on the new boards, let it dry for 24 – 48 hours and then apply TWP. Apply the Hardwood stain with a rag, lightly rubbing the color into the new boards; just like redoing hardwood in your home. This approach has wood great for me in replacing board for some of my customers.
You cannot apply the TWP over a hardwood interior stain.
Mold, not mild. Basically, I want to use your product to seal and protect. I just want to use the Minwax to color.
I want to stain my deck black. Can I mix Minwax True Black with your clear 1500?
No, you cannot use Minwax or any interior stain on exterior decking. It will not work or give any UV protection. You also can never top coat a clear sealer over a stain for exterior wood.
Thank you for your reply! Could you first use your product to seal and protect the wood from mild, mildew, etc. and then apply Minwax over that just for color? I understand it wouldn’t offer protection, it would just be for aesthetics. The problem is that I can’t find an oil based exterior stain in black.
No, it will not work. What you would like to do is not possible.
I just ordered the safe strip to remove the prior TWP 1500 stain. After that can I just restain the deck.
Thanks
Yes.
On my deck there are some cracks that I applied wood filler to. Can the stain stick to the wood filler?
Sorry but wood filler does not work for deck stains. The stain will not “stain” the wood to blend and it will stand out.
We really like Dark Oak but need something in that same color but lighter for our front porch. Is it possible to mix Dark Oak and Natural for a lighter color?
Yes, you can mix but better to use the Clear, not Natural.
1501 Cedartone turned my western red cedar fence yellow. Do you think I got honeytone by mistake? It is quite yellow.
No, that would not be possible. Final color always varies based on the wood type and ager of the wood.
i just finished staining my cedar patio furniture with 1503. What do I need to do when it needs to be re stained in a few years?
Clean and brighten for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I just applied the 1520 to our one year old deck. We noticed some runs(day after applying). We tried to brush it out with no success.
What can we do to fix?
These areas are on the horizontal railings.
Try mineral spirits.
Cedar deck installed one year ago in Chicago. How much of 1500 series stain needed for a 300sq ft area? What prep should I use prior?
Prep with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
About 3 gallons for two coats applied wet on wet.
What does wet on wet mean?

Have two 5 gallon cans of stain coming as well as RAD strip and restore coming. Thank you for the feedback. TWP’ers, I’m coming for you and gunning for first prize in the 2020 best project challenge.
What is a reasonable expectation for the life of a two-coat application of TWP? I have a 6 year old deck w/ unknown semi-transparent stain and will need to be stripped. Just trying to get a handle on how long before I’ll need to use Gemini Restore (think that’s correct) and restain. Thanks for your feedback!
Every 2-3 years.
TWP 1500 Dark Oak
Deck A:
Applied one coat 2 years ago, heavy traffic, faded and has wear.
1A) use RAD or the stripper
2A) apply RAD/Stripper with scrub brush & power washer?
3A) how many coats needed after RAD/stripper
4A) planing to re-stain every 3 years, will it always need RAD each time
Deck B:
Applied two coats last year, wet on dry resulted in shiny finish, also has white streaks assuming it’s sap leaching..
1B) will white streaks wipe off with mineral spirits? Will mineral spirits tarnish surrounding stain?
2B) how do I apply wet on wet? Do I apply second coat before it dries (and can I walk on) or mist with hose next day and stain?
3B) to get ride of shine, use RAD then 1 or 2 coats of stain?
4B) can bug juice Ben applied after fact or must it be mixed with stain
Deck A
-Clean and brighten for prep with the Gemini Kit and pressure washing. Apply two coats of stain. You always have to prep when recoating.
Deck B
-No, you cannot remove sap with mineral spirits. Nothing really works well for this.
-See here for wet on wet. https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
You cannot apply TWP to a damper or water wet deck.
-Use the RAD Stripper to remove the over applied shiny TWP. Brightener after then dry for 48 hours. Then two coats wet on wet after.
-Bug juice has to be mixed into the stain.
Is TWP safe to use on outdoor furniture? We’ve loved its durability of it on our deck and haven’t had the best luck trying to stain our outdoor table with other products.
You can use it on furniture.
Can I get small samples so I can choose the right color?
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
I will be applying TWP 1500 to my new deck. Do I need to look for a window of some dry days, to allow it to dry properly? I know it says dries in 12-18 hours but am concerned what rain would do if hitting it a day or two after application.
See here about new wood tips: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
No issues if rain comes 24 hours later.
I had a new pressure treated deck installed this past November. Is April too early to stain? If so when do you recommend I stain it?
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
You can do it this Spring. Use the 1500 or 100 Series.
I am looking for some bigger sample pictures of the colors available. The little sliver on the website, surely does not do the color any justice.
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-brochure-and-color-chart
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
The second link is perfect. Thanks for the quick response
where in Ontario Canada can I purchase TWP as well if a touch up coat is required what prep work is required
TWP is not sold in any stores in Canada. Only the 200 Series is allowed there and you will have to order online for shipping.
I’m in Waterloo Ontario S.W. Ontario
Thanks for your reply. I am now trying to choose a color and would like to know if the color lightens or darkens after its applied with age. I have applied a sample of 1516 and 1511 on a piece of wood and they don’t look a lot different like they do on your samples.
thanks for your advice.
TWP typically lightens in color through the years.
Thanks for your earlier reply, where you said to follow your instructions for new wood. It says new rough sawn redwood fence boards have a mill glaze, are very absorbent and can be stained right away, is that ok if they have a high moisture content?
Rough sawn wood does not have a mill glaze and you can stain it right away of the moisture content is below 15%
I installed a new redwood rough sawn fence about 5 weeks ago, the wood came from the lumber yard with the usual wet moisture content, but appears to have dried out good now. The rough sawn wood looks like it will be very absorbent,
Questions: I) will one coat of the 1500 series be enough?
2) should I do wet on wet?
3) what nap roller should I use? ( I don’t want to spray)
4) about how long should it last before I need to re coat?.
See here about new wood and it will answer your questions: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Do not roll on the TWP. Use one of these applicators types.

Hi TWP guys,
I want to stain my deck this Spring. When I apply the 1500 series semi transparent stain, how long must the temperature be above 45 degrees, 24 hours?
Regards,
Clive
Yes, that is correct.
I’m looking for a sample of the 1500 dark oak. Do you have those?
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Why more expensive in the 5 gallon?
Also if I have a fence(4 rail ranch style 1800 linear feet, how do I calculate square footage to get number of gallons needed?
The 5-gallon is not more expensive. Length x height x 2 for both sides to get sq. footage of a fence.
The deck of a porch on a shed I had built was old wood, of several varieties, that had been plained. I used TWP #1515 Honeytone (ordered from this site) on the surface, two coats, applied wet, and it has appeared to work well. This was 3-5 months ago. I chose the Honeytone but now wish I’d chosen a darker color. Can I now apply another coat of 1500 series with a different, darker color stain, over this original coat? What should I do to prepare the surface? Unfortunately, another project I did on the porch resulted in some mist from a can of spray paint also falling on the surface. Do I have to address this spray paint contamination in a special way? If I were to choose to ignore how it might affect the appearance after application of additional coats could I proceed as if it wasn’t there? Or will the spray paint affect the efficacy of the subsequent applications in the areas where it appears? Would very much appreciate some answers. Thanks!
You will have to remove the spray paint and that will require sanding. To then get an even surface your should strip to remove the Honeytone and brighten after with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Have a So Flo home w 25 x 15 x 9 pergola of pressure treated pine; was told it needed one year to dry; left it for almost two years. Will one gallon b enough?
You will need more than 1 gallon. What is the total sq footage of all wood that will be stained?
I had to replace some of my deck stairs, but missed the window of time to stain them properly with weather conditions. I still have some stain left from two summers ago. If I have a five day window of time where temps above 50 during the day, can I stain them with a coat of stain so it’s protected during the winter?
It would best to prep and stain in the Spring. One Winter will not harm the wood.
Please advise if it’s okay to stain new rough cut curved cedar deck support braces now – we live in North Carolina.
You can stain new rough sawn cut now as long as it is clean and dry.
We’ve stripped, brightened and sanded our 5 year old deck over the summer. We already stained the verticals with 1500 Cedartone and are getting ready to do the horizontals. For the best coverage on this first time, would you recommend brush or rolling? Also, how long after staining can we walk on it. We are in a dry period today but have a large party scheduled for tomorrow night and then more rain the next day. We are thinking about staining this morning if it is truly usable after 24 hours.
Use a stain pad or brush. Do not use a roller. Dries in about 12-24 hours.
Looking to reseal our redwood deck in California. The previous owner used Australian Timber Oil from Cabot, “Natural” finish, but I’d like something a bit more sun-and-heat durable. Could I apply the 1500 series right over the old finish, or would I need to sand the wood down first?
You will need to remove the Cabot. Strip and brighten for this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Would you recommend this product for a cedar floor of a screened in porch?
Yes, works great!
Hi,
What is the shelf-life of a sealed, half full gallon of 1501?
I wish to combine it with a fresh gallon of 1501 and use it, rather than have to seek a disposal facility.
Thanks in advance.
See this: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/shelf-life-of-twp/
Thank you!
Hi,
I have a 12′ x 24′ cedar deck (see photo) that I have treated with TWP every two years since 2013 (2013, 2015, 2017 – three total applications since new). I have used 1501 Cedartone each time. It has progressively gotten darker over time and with each application.
I was contemplating using Clear 1500 in hopes of preventing it from getting darker, but 1500 has no UV protection. Was also contemplating using Natural 1530.
Do you have a recommendation on:
1) reuse of Cedartone 1501?
2) Natural 1530?
3) Clear 1500?
Can UV protectant be added to 1500?
Thanks in advance for any recommendation.
Really love your product.
Regards,
Doug
For prep this year, use the RAD Stripper/Brightener Kits so you are down to the bare wood. You can then use the Natural, Cedartone or any color that you like. Do not use Clear unless you want the wood to gray naturally.
The deck after re-application of 1500. It turned out great! thanks TWP.
We have a redwood deck and pergola that had Armstrong applied about 5 years ago. That ‘redwood’ stain color turned really dark red brown. Now it’s being sanded down for a refresh. Can 1511 go on next? Any other prep needed? Our old TWP 511 ‘California Redwood’ on a redwood fence turned pretty yellow on rough redwood–Is the newer stuff any more “pink” like fresh redwood- or other color suggestion for that? Thanks.
Strip and brighten for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
The 1511 and 511 are the same color. See here for photos: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
Can the 1511 and 511 be mixed?
As long as the 511 is still good then yes.
We mixed California Redwood with Redwood 1:1 and the color is great.
Applying pine ship-lap to our chimney. Id love to have a black stain and I see the closest you have is black walnut. From northern MN, so waiting months is not possible to stain.. Should I just wait until next spring?
Also, wondering which product would be best. Thanks!
Use, wait until Spring. Prep with this after the wait: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Use the 1504 Black Walnut.
I just sprayed my pergola with the 1501 Cedarwood. I touched up areas that the stain looked light. I now have good coverage but notice the second time through shows a darker richer look which I really like. Should I spray another coat over the entire pergola or just wait until next year? Hopefully, there needs to be no prep work. Thank you.
Wait until next year. Prep by lightly washing with water to remove dirt.
Just fully sanded my 300 sq ft deck in Massachusetts. Any recommendations for stain? Was looking at the 1500 series, Pecan. Brush or roll it on too?
You will need the 1500 Series for MA. For final prep, use the Gemini Restore Kit to open up the wood grain pores after sanding. Apply with a stain pad or brush, do not roll it on.
I have a redwood deck/ front porch that had been painted by the previous homeowner. My painter stripped it down and asked me what I wanted to do with the deck. I chose a semi-transparent stain from Sherwin Williams (my painter’s preferred brand). After one coat it wasn’t even close to the color I chose and it got very dark. My painter then told me it’s because the stain was applied to redwood and the color was most likely representative of being applied to a different / lighter wood. He is pushing to use a solid stain (which he wanted to use from the beginning). I’d much rather have a clear applied, but he’s saying it won’t last a year. The deck / porch gets a lot of sun and foot traffic. I want to keep the color as light as possible. Any suggestions ?
The SW will have to be fully removed prior to using the TWP. Once removed, best to get some sample colors to make sure your like the TWP: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Installed new decking 2 years ago. Last year (2018) applied one coat of TWP 1530 stain. I’m looking to apply a second coat this year. After cleaning, I’d like to apply another coat this year. Do I apply using the “wet on wet” method at this point using a brush?
Thanks,
John Smith
Just one coat this year. In two years you can do the wet on wet.
I have a new kiln dried cedar fence – Its been installed for about a month. I plan on using the Restore a Deck Kit to prep the wood prior to staining, but I would really like a dark, dark stain, similar to Behr’s semi transparent slate stain. I am worried that Black Walnut may not be dark enough, especially since you recommend applying only 1 coat for new wood. Would it be possible to apply two coats to get that dark look?
Is the wood rough sawn or smooth?
It’s smooth. Sanded on three sides.
Then only one coat for the new wood. Two coats will not soak in correctly.
The one of the actual deck did not come thru. I’m trying again.
We have a 4 year old deck that was stained with Behr semi-transparent stain. To say it is a mess would be a huge understatement. We have power washed it, tried the Sherwin Williams stripper and ended up returning it as it did absolutely nothing. We are considering the Restore-A-Deck Stripper and Brightener. What are the chances Restore-A-Deck can remove this water based semi-transparent stain? I am really trying to avoid the whole sanding thing.
Could you reply with some pictures?
Sure. Hoping I did this correctly.
That is not semi-transparent but a solid opaque stain in appearance. It cannot be stripped fully. You will need to power sand to get this all off.
That’s what I was afraid of. The Behr can says semi-transparent but this is what it looks like. I wish I had researched this product before using it. Thank you for your help. When I get it sanded and stripped, would you recommend TWP 100 or 1500 series?
Behr makes terrible products. You may be able to strip off a decent amount with the RAD stripper and the additives: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives
You will still need to sand but it should make the sanding easier. If you use them, let the stripper/additives dwell for an hour or so on deck before pressure washing off.
So I took your advice and ordered the RAD stripper, gel and booster. I have to say I was not overly optimistic but thought I have to get this crap off my deck, what did I have to lose? I cannot believe the difference!! We are stripping the deck in stages and it is truly a messy job BUT as you can see by the pic, there is hope!!! I was prepared to paint the entire thing because I did not think we would get the Behr not-so-semi-transparent crap off. Thank you so much for your help, advice and most of all for carrying a product that works. Now I feel comfortable ordering your semi-transparent stain.
Great!
The one of the actual deck did not come thru with the others.
