TWP 1500 1 Gallon Stain
TWP 1500 is a Semi-transparent Oil-Based wood stain and preservative that is allowed in all 50 states.
The new TWP® 1500 formula is designed to penetrate better, dry faster and outperform the previous TWP® 500 series formula.
TWP® 1500 Series is an EPA registered wood preservative which prevents structural damage and wood decay on exterior above ground wood surfaces such as fencing, decking, wood siding, log homes, and roofing. TWP® 1500 Series resists water absorption that causes warping, cracking and splitting as well as preventing freeze damage in colder climates.

1500 Series and Deck Stain 1 Gallon
Gate recently installed. There is also a fence in back of the same make – rough western red cedar – and age – a couple of months. Have decided to go with TWP 1500. Looking at the fence and comparing to the wood on the front porch, I am thinking of going with the 1530 Natural instead of the Cedartone. I don’t really want to change the color of the gate and am afraid the Cedartone will make it darker or oranger. Any thoughts appreciated.
Natural is tinted, not clear so the color will change. It has to be tinted to prevent UV protection:https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
Should I use the TWP protectant of preservative on natural bamboo fencing? I’d like to keep the natural color, but still want UV protection. What color do you recommend? Which product would be best?
Sorry but the TWP stains we sell can’t be used for bamboo.
Using RAD (which btw really is awesome rad effective) Attached are some before and after stripping/cleaning/brightening. I stripped, cleaned and power-washed PT lumber deck (of 25 yrs) that had been stained (solid stain, mostly worn off, plus deck had mold w/ deep spores and strong UV damage). Wood came out basically new looking. Very impressed with RAD. Will be using TWP 1500 to finish off. Now deck is looking so unexpectedly good, I’m now looking at the 200 spindles and 163′ of railing that was done in Semi-solid Behr and in comparison looks terrible. I know I cannot stain over spindles, so am actually considering painting or replacing them. At his moment all railing solutions are overwhelming. My Question: will stripping and power washing vertical spindles and railing at another date ruin the new stained flooring? Would I be able to spot touch up under the railing with the same stain next year? Thanks in advance.
If you strip the railings later then it will strip off the TWP on the floors so that will all have to be redone.
Has anyone ever had results from mixing Pecan (3gal) and Dark Oak (2gal)?I’m looking for a mid-tone brown in the 1500 Series. Thanks
You can mix colors of the same series. You would have to test this on your own though as we do not have any pictures.
I’m sorry for my previous one word post.
I hired pros to apply this stain to our deck. Within an hour of their finishing, we got a heavy rain for about 10-15 minutes. I called them, concerned, and was told it will be just fine, that the stain already penetrated the wood. But Google says different. Can you tell me whether the stain has been compromised by rain so soon after application?
The only way to know is to let the rainwater dry off the deck and then evaluate then to visually see if compromised.
Rain
My deck was powerwashed and then stained about 5 years ago with TWP 1501 Cedartone. What prep do I need before I restain?
Use this for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Should I powerwash the deck first?
You pressure wash while using the kit.
Can you recommend companies in the Northern Virginia area who are familiar with applying your products?
Sorry, but we do not have a list of contractors in your area.
Last stained deck using One Time stain (uses a bonding as opposed to oil or water based product). Will 1500 TWP cover it well? I don’t want to darken the wood any more but also need the UV protection. Which color do you recommend?
You cannot apply TWP or any stain over the OneTime. You will have to remove that first. use the RAD Stripper Kit with both additives to remove it.https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives
I just installed an outdoor shower made of new, planed, western red cedar. Should I wait to treat it with your semi-transparent, oil-based stain (1501 Cedartone), or apply it ASAP before discoloration starts?

Do TWP Stains work well on IPE wood? I need to retreat some deck railing/posts and have not used TWP products in the past. If this product would be good to use can you recommend the 100 of 1500 series? The railing has high exposure to the sun and I’d like something with a good UV protectant. Is there a side by side chart that identifies the differences between the 100 vs 1500 series?
You can use TWP on IPE but IPE requires annual coatings due to the extreme density of the wood.
The difference is VOCs between the twp and what is allowed in your state?
Perfect, thank you for the information. Living in California, I’ve compared the 200 and 1500 and I think the 200 would be the better product for IPE that is exposed to sun 90% of the day. Would you agree?
No, you cannot use the TWP 200 Series on IPE. You will need the 1500 series.
need to protect bamboo fencing that has been “carbonized”. is 1500 the proper clear stain ?
No, the TWP stains we sell will not work on bamboo.
What I think I need: 1 kit Gemini restore a deck in cape cod color. Also need 3 additional gallons in same color. Not seeing it on your site. Is it available?
The Gemini Kit is a prep kit, not a stain. The TWP 100 Series comes in Cape Cod Gray: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/twp-wood-stains/twp-100-series
I had a contractor install a small new redwood deck and a new gate. They chose to use miniwax stain (a non-exterior oil-based stain).
This was about 3 months ago. The deck is starting to look pretty bad, it has a strange inconsistent faded color from occasional wetness and looks rather dry. Part of the gate is starting to lift up from dryness. I’m not sure what the best steps are from here. I live in Southern California.
I want to apply a new stain and provide some protection to the wood. What is the best process at this point?
Remove the Minwax first and then stain with the TWP 1500 Series. Post some pictures for removal help but you probably need to sand it off.
Here are some pictures.
If sanding is necessary, should the Gemini’s Restore-A-Deck Cleaner and Brightener Kit be used afterwards?
What would you suggest as the time frame between each phase through staining?
Use the Stripper and brightener kit for prep:https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
You do this one day and then let dry for 2 days or longer to apply the TWP.
So no sanding needed then?
Can I wait a week after applying to stripper and brightener? If so, anything special to do after waiting so long?
You may need to sand a little after the stripping. You can stain within two weeks of the prep.
OK, thank you for the guidance.
I’m assuming it would need need a wash (at least for dust and dirt) if it’s been a week or so before applying the stain. Is that correct?
Probably if dirty.
OK and regarding the stripping and brightening.
Should I strip and brighten, then assess if sanding is needed? OR Just do the strip part, then assess if sanding is needed?
Strip, assess, sand if needed, then brightener.
OK, thanks for that. I’ll try this us and see how it goes!
Just used your product 1530 on my deck and it came out the best ever ! Thinking ahead till next time I’m concerned that reapplication will make the deck to dark. Im wondering if i can mix a 1500 with a 1530 to cut it down or just use the 1500 clear TX.
You should use the same color and when you prep correctly with the Gemini kit, the stain will not get darker with additional coatings.
Used this for my Cedar Deck last week. Came out awesome. I am now building a Cedar Pergola and I am going to be using 4x4x8 Cedar posts from a local lumber yard. I would love to stain them with the rest of stain I have left over from my deck. Any advice on how to prep the posts before staining them? Do I use the cleaner and brightener like I did with my old cedar deck? Any advice appreciated
Yes, but you cannot stain new wood yet. See here: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
What is the best way to remove cedar tone 1501 drops that has dripped onto paver stones below the deck?
A graffiti remover cleaner like Goof Off and pressure washing.
What should I do yearly to keep the stain it’s brightest and longer lasting?
Just lightly clean with water to remove any dirt.
I’m in the process of removing a water-based stain from my cedar fence and would like to restain it with TWP 1500 Series. After all the tedious work I do not want to have to do it again and want a stain and color that will last for a while! 🙂 I notice that you have small samples available. What is the process to request them? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have a new deck built in June 2020 of pressure treated lumber. Since it has been a year, should I do the wet-on-wet two coats method or just do one coat for now? I’m planning on using your 1500 stain. Thanks
2 coats wet on wet.
Just stained my deck. How long before i can put furniture back on and use it.
Weather has been in the 70s the last few days.
24-48 hours.
How dry should the wood be before staining?
48 hours after prep or rain.
Are there any temperature guide lines as to when you apply it?
50-90 degrees.
If I used 1530 Natural a couple of years in a row and wish to go with a little darker stain (1516 Rustic), do I need to follow any special procedures?
Use this for prep so the new coating applies evenly.https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Gas got spilled on deck. Still has stain how do I remove before staining? Already tried bleach.
Sorry but no idea if it can be removed.
Sand it.
Can a finish be applied over this product in say a period of 6/8 years.
You can not apply a different coating over the TWP.
We’ve used 1501 a couple of times and its time to refresh. Our deck is 20 years old – originally kiln dried cedar and very nice quality – but when I’ve sanded and resealed, scratches appear pretty easily. Is there a way to harden the cedar with another oil treatment prior to the 1501? Or work it in? I’m hoping to really get the oils back in to create a harder finish.
Sorry but no, that is not possible.
Is this safe to use on table/benches?
Yes.
The label says 12-72 hours to dry. Would this be very accurate drying time. Today will be the third day. Do you think it will be ready to walk on after 96 hours? Which would be 4 days. It’s lakefront in northeast and weather has been sunny and cool and there is always a wind blowing on it.
You should be okay, just make sure it is dry to the touch.
Is washing with a bleach solution absolutely necessary?
You have to prep but do not use bleach. Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
And then apply stain?
Yes, correct.
The instructions specifically say to clean with 1 part water to 1 part household bleach, which contradicts your recommendation above. Which is it?
Also, for maintenance coats, if TWP was applied originally, does the original application need to be removed as stated in the instructions for “Sealed Wood”, or does that only apply to non-TWP products?
The Gemini Kit is the proper way to prep now and in the future for reapplications. TWP can be reapplied over itself.
Is there less wood penetration with the 1500 series because of the lower VOC?
No, it is the same.
Is the penetration the same as with the 100 series?
Yes.
In between raindrops, we are in the process of re-staining our deck using TWP 1500 series. The daytime temps this week will be in the 60’s but dropping to the 30’s and 40’s at night. Are these temps suitable for this process?
It cannot drop below freezing the first night after staining. The rest is okay.
What does “low VOC” mean? How is it different from the TCP that doesn’t say “low VOC?”
https://www.twpstain.com/voc-states
Difference is what is allowed in your state.
Are these oil base stains compatible with deck joist flashing tapes which may be butyl, asphalt, or rubberized asphalt?
Yes, plus you are not staining the back side of the boards, just the top.
I am going to be applying the 1500 stain to a deck with some new black powder coated hardware, does the stain harm metal in any way?
Avoid getting the stain on spindles. It does not harm it, just looks messy.
How much stain do I need to stain a fence of 193 feet? Do you have a video of how to stain using this product in a sprayer? What does wet on wet mean?
We would need a total sq. footage. For a fence Length x Height x two for both sides. Wet on wet here: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
Here is a video: https://youtu.be/xH6RnzN4M-c
total square foot is 213. Staining one side of fence. attached is fence height and length
FYI, you will get some stain bleed through to the other side and it will be unsightly. About 2 gallons for two coats on 213 sq feet.
Ok, Thank you. Is the Pecan 120 same as Pecan 1520? If not what is the difference?
No, they are not exactly the same. Very close though.
2 gallons and that is with using a sprayer correct?
You will waste some stain of spraying so you may need another gallon.
Hi there!I want my cedar deck to turn natural gray. I usually wait for things to turn gray then oil them clear. My question is, will applying clear (that will allow to turn gray), slow down the turning gray process or make it spotty? Or is it better to apply oil and give it protection as it turns gray? My location is coastal Maine
Prep and then use the clear. It will gray naturally then.
We are getting ready to re-stain our deck and just realized we have an unopened gallon of 1500 series stain from when we stained two years ago. Can we use that gallon first or are we beyond the shelf life?
It should be fine as long it is not clumpy when you open it. Make sure to mix all new and old together before applying.
Can I buy a qt of cedertone
Gallons are the smallest size.
I have varying ages of a redwood fence that I want to match as best as possible, all previously unstained. I have cleaned/brightened/pressure washed (all boards), but I can still see a decent difference between the 2 boards my neighbor replaced. I was planning on using the 1500 but would using the semi-solid be better for even-ing it out? If not should I try using different stain colors? Any other suggestions?
Yes, it is not possible for new and old wood to match when using the semi-transparent colors. You will get a better blend with the semi-solid.
I have a deck that was built 10 years ago. The structural lumber is PT SYP. Some of the joists have a green bio-film on them which is unattractive (see photo, decking has been removed). Should I simply clean this or, to best prevent this in the future, paint or stain these structural elements? Is there a paint or stain that contains an effective anti-microbial component that will prevent this in the future?
You can clean and brighten and it would remove most but not all, if deep in the wood grain. There is not a way to prevent it from coming back.
New rough cut hemlock ( board & baton) was using for siding. After testing for % of moisture in siding, TWP 1500 was applied. Fantastic stain! Best stain ever.
I am getting ready to stain my new deck for the first time (completed September 2020). The deck is constructed from AC Green (big box) pressure treated pine. Some rail posts have some minor splitting after the typical Chicago winter. I was considering filling them before using your TWP1500 pecan color product. What would type of filler would you recommend to be compatible with your product and are there additional prep requirements before staining?
Fillers will not work on outside decking and will not stain to blend. Leave as is as cracks in a deck are normal. See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Thank you for the feedback!
We are refinishing a dock. The wood is redwood and I will be using a diamabrush to remove the heavy wood coating that is flaking and pealing off. Afterwards I will use belt sander with 80 grit to smooth it off some.
For final prep after sanding, use this kit to open the pores: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
We live in Minnesota, so we can use 100 or 1500 I believe. As this is used over the water, is one better for protection against mildew?
They work the same when it comes to mildew. Most use the 100 Series in MN.
We used 3 samples on the redwood dock boards pictured. We prefer the look of the 1500 Clear stain. 2 questions: 1.) what will occur over time to the wood without the UV protection in clear.
1. The wood will gray naturally in a matter of months.
What is the longevity of the stain on a pergola?
About 3-5 years.
How do I get the samples?
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
We stripped and stained our deck with TWP 1500 series two years ago. We are getting ready to add another coat of stain this year. Will power washing be a sufficient prep or is your brightener necessary as well?
You will need to clean and brighten for prep while pressure washing: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
What is the % solids in the 1500 series?
60-70%
We had our brand new Ipe pool deck stained with 1500 Natural last February. It is time to restain. The deck has some black spots (possibly mildew?). Can we just go ahead and stain with the 1500 Natural or do we need any cleaners first? Thanks!
You always have to prep when recoating: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Is there any other product I could add over this to give the finish wood a semi-gloss or glossy look? I’m looking to stain a bench but also want a finish to it.
Sorry but no, you can never apply a coating over the TWP. It will peel.
What is the difference between the 100 and 1500 series? I’m about to paint or stain our deck (haven’t decided yet which one). A friend used the 116 rustic for a cedar look on his but I also saw the 1516 one as well. Just not sure what to use now.
The difference is VOC compliance for certain states: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-stain-comparison
