1500 Series and Deck Stain 1 Gallon
We have just recently remodeled our deck with new standard pressure treated lumber. About 30 days ago we treated the wood with Thompson’s WaterSeal Clear Wood Sealer Clear Oil-Based Wood Sealant. We wanted the natural look but now realizing that this is not a good option for UV protection. We are going to purchase this product and would like to know when I apply your product can I put it directly over the sealer already on there or do I need to sand it down first or is there a product you recommend to strip it. Thanks!
You will need to remove it. Strip and Brighten.

I have a Yellow Cedar deck. Built Fall 2021. July 2022 I stained the deck following all instructions of Olympic Summit, Stain + Sealant, Woodland Oil, Transparent, Natural, product code 801102C. After one winter, every part of the deck that was snow covered if peeling off. After I strip and sand the deck to remove all of this stain that didn’t last 12 months, should I leave it unprotected, or is there a product that would last 2+ years. We live in Fernie, BC, Canada where we get significant snow and a few thaw-freeze cycles per winter. Thanks for any suggestions of what I should use (if anything) after starting over
Use this for Canada. It will last 2-3 years and will not peel.

I have a brand new fir decking on my covered front porch. Want to keep the color and look of the wood. Should I use 1500 or 1530 or a different one. Don’t really wanna stain it. Just seal it but with some Uv protection if possible Thanks
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
If you want UV protection then you must use a tinted stain color. 1515 Honeytone is the lightest tint.
would there be any application or drying issues with using 1515 Honeytone for a first coat. And then 1500 Clear for the second coat of wet on wet. would like some UV protection, but not all the color
No, do not do this. Use the same color for both coats.
thank you
I bought 3 samples to select the stain for my one year old deck. Natural 1530 was light and highlighted the knots and grain enough to keep it natural looking, yet UV protected. I went with it. Samples will help you make a good decision.
Is your Black Walnut the same as Dark Walnut? My builder listed TWP Dark Walnut Gel Stain on our spec sheet. Need to re-stain deck and wood on house from original TWP stain in 2018 but cannot find “dark walnut” on your site. Thx!
There is no such thing as TWP Dark Walnut Gel stain. Never has been.
I want to stain my Ipe deck in Upstate New York. What product and color should I use?
Most use the Rustic 1516 color. Just one coat.
Should I apply a different UV sealant over TWP for a deck that get full sun?
No. You cannot apply a sealer over a deck stain.
I have a 20+ year old PT deck located in southern Ohio that I have used TWP 1530 on for the past 10+ years. I need to recoat it (2 years since it has been stained) and I intend to use the Gemeni Cleander and Brightener before recoating and will be recoating with TWP 1530. My question is when do you consider sanding necessary? My deck boards have been sanded several times in the past and currently show no signs of splintering.
No need to sand.
I have a covered porch that is smooth wood. It is previously covered with varnish and looks like indoor floors would except on the stairs that are now peeling. I used twp on my back deck and want to do it on the porch too. Am I able to do that if it’s super smooth wood that’s more like a floor than a deck? There is no space between boards. I was going to sand the varnish off but would the wood be too smooth to accept the stain?
Sand with 60-80 grit paper to remove the varnish and then final prep with the Gemini Restore Kit. One coat of the TWP only.
I have a new 3 level deck that has weathered for 12 months now. It has grayed so we will use Gemini Restore Kit to clean and prep. House is Taupe in color and deck railings are white. Coastal location with lots of sun on 2 upper decks most of day. Which series do you recommend I use?
Were are you located?
Coastal Delaware
Use the 1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
Can the TWP 1500 clear deck stain be customized with a tinted color? If so which tint is best to mix into the clear deck stain?
No, that is not possible.
You can mix any color 1500 series with the 1500 clear. I mixed the 1503 with the 1500 using 3 gallons of 1503 with 1 gallon of 1500. Installed the mix on western red cedar fence in 2018 and it is still one of the best looking fences in my neighborhood. You cannot mix 1500 series with 100 or 200 series product. Side note: Using clear will lighten the color you use but the clear has no real UV protection that is in the tint. TWP does not customize colors. Find your ratio by mixing small amounts, 3 tbs to 1 tbs and apply to same wood as on deck or fence before apply to installed deck or fence. My fence is 7 yrs old and lost some color so my ratio on touch up will be maybe 2/2. PS The fence has seen 5 or 6 state hurricanes and I live near the Gulf of Mexico.
I need to reseal my pergola made from Doug fir and western red cedar. I sealed it in 2016 with 1500 in dark walnut. What is the proper prep for this? I plan on pressure washing. Anything else?
Use this for prep while pressure washing.

I am trying to stain 2 coat of 1 sides of 6 qty of 8*8 lattice fences. How many gallon of the 1500 series would I need? Thank you
What is the total sq footage for all wood added up that will be stained?
around 384 – 400 sq foot range. It’s one side of a lattice fence so I am not sure if that is a bump up or down. Thank you
3-4 gallons should be about right for two coats.
More questions.
We purchased and hand brush apply TWP 1515 slightly over 2 years ago on the new fence and it looks like attached picture now.
We are getting new fences this month and we are wondering if 1515 is too light for UV protection, and if we can reply more on some of the problematic fences post power wash. Or if we need to go darker?
thank you
Darker colors would give better UV results. To reply more, you would have to prep all wood first:

Can this product be custom Tinted?
No, it cannot.
You can mix the different shades together to get a different unique color/shade.
Yes.
I just added new rough cut cedar to my deck railings. How long do I need to wait to stain the rough cut cedar and what is the optimal temperature range for the application? It’s December in TX and the high temps are in the mid to low 50s with early morning temps in the mid 30s to mid 40s.
You can stain rough sawn wood right away. Temps between 50-90. Cannot drop below freezing the first night.
Am installing a cypress wood ceiling in a SW Florida covered lanai area. It is a covered area with not direct sun or water, just the humidity in the air. What is the best product, and how long can i expect it to last
Use the TWP 1500 Series. It should last for many years since it is covered. 5-10.
I stained my deck 3 years ago with TWP 1500 series. As you can see, it’s definitely ready to be re-stained. Since the stain is so blotchy, would it be best if I strip and brighten, or will cleaning and brightening be adequate prep? Also, I sanded the rail caps which had a different brand of stain, is cleaning and brightening adequate?
Clean and brighten all while pressure washing will work for this.
We have used TWP in the past for our log home. We cannot recall what we used last. Any trouble with resuming TWP over or existing stain?
No. You will have to remove any prior stain brands first before using the TWP.
I’ve been using TWP 100 for 10 years and love it. Now it cannot be shipped to Colorado so I am forced to go with the TWP 1500. Several basic questions and I cannot figure out how to search the Q&A. Can I go right over the 100 with the 1500? How will the 1500 compare with the 100? Thank you!
The 1500 lasts the same as the 100 series. For prep strip and brighten for prep with the Restore A Deck kit.
I have 4, 12x12x12 cypress beams and 4, 8x8x10 cypress beams I want to stain. How many gallons would you suggest? I would like to stay as close as possible to the natural color. After looking at your gallery 1520 Pecan looks to be the closest, would you agree?
Thank you
Total sq footage of all sides that are being stained? color vary based on wood type and age so there is no way to say for sure how it will look on your wood. Best to test samples: https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
300sq ft.
For 1 coat about 2 gallons. For two coats, 3 gallons.
thank you so much for your help!
I have 2 partial cans of twp stain 1530. They are about 5 years old and have been kept in my attached garage in Michigan. Does the stain deteriorate over time? Would it be a bad idea to use the old stain along with 1 new gallon of the same color?
Thank you.
It is no good now. Shelf life is 12 months if opened.
What goes bad after 12 months in a full sealed can, not frozen or exposed to harsh conditions
It is good for a couple of years or longer if never opened and in a temperature-controlled room or place.
Shawn, just installed a new cedar fence how long should I wait before I can stain it, living in Washington State it rains a little
See here: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Hi, I will be staining an older deck in Michigan. Would you recommend going with the 100 or 1500 series? I want the longest lasting results with the least amount of maintenance. Thanks!
They last the same on an older deck and have some maintenance. Most use the 100 Series in MI but the 1500 is just as good.
Hello,
Would like to stain a section of my cedar deck to match the rest of my newly installed mahogany deck. Would I need to mix two of the 1500 series stain colors and if so which would you recommend that will resemble the color of mahogany which has tones of red and brown. Also would like to know if there is a retail store that Sells the semi-solid pro series in Connecticut or New York.
Thanks
It is not possible to make cedar wood match a hardwood like Mahogany and there is no ratio that we know of that will get you close. We sell online only.
I would buy some samples, blend and test for color. Maybe try mixing redwood with dark oak. They sell small sample bottles.
Is staining ok in direct sun?
Yes, but quickly and keep a wet edge to avoid overlap lines.
May be a stupid question, and I think I already know the answer. I have fresh cut cypress posts that my customer wants to put outside of her house and have your product applied immediately.
I advised against it. I’m assuming that your product shouldn’t be applied to wet wood because it wood seal the moisture in and would then never dry, correct?
Either that or the wet wood wouldn’t allow your product to fully absorb.

20 to 40 year old 1500 SF multi-level pine deck that wraps around a pool, in Michigan that has had TWP products on it in the past, just not sure which ones. Stripped and power washed it, ready for stain and sealer, which series would you recommend using, the 100 or 1500?
100 Series for MI.
There is something in the wood preventing the TWP from soaking in. Maybe Sap? You would have to remove whatever is preventing the TWP from soaking in first.
When you say remove, do you mean sanding off whatever it is? Seems to be popping up all over the rails as we’ve continued staining.
Probably sand it off.
Can TWP be used on teak outdoor furniture? And if so, any additional prep outside what furniture is delivered with?
And color recommendation to match the teak color? Thanks
Yes, it can. We would need to see some pics posted here for prep advice.
Looking at this teak sofa thing
It is already stained. You would not have to prep and redo it for another year or two after putting it outside.
Understand. Asking as how much prep will be needed if we went with this something non wood. Just bought 25 gal for fence and deck and wanted to stick with the same products/two across the home. Hoping i can just stain over or do I need to strip etc
You would have to remove the current stain before using the TWP.
Thanks!
Can the 1500 series stains be mixed with the 100 series stains? I have 5 gallons of 100 series Rustic on hand for staining my back deck. If I need more than the 5 gallons to complete 2 coats, can I buy an extra gallon or 2 of the 1500 series Rustic to complete the job?
We would not suggest mixing the two Series. Colors are not the same. We do sell single gallons as well.
What is the best product for a new screened in porch? Pine wood, living on a SC lake.
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
After wait and pre, use the TWP 100 Series.
I need to spray due to depth/detail/accessibility limitations. What do you recommend?
Any quality pump sprayer will work.
Will TWP 1500 work on bamboo fencing? OR use the 300 serires of sealer?
The 1500 will not work on bamboo.
Is this stain also a sealer and how long will it last before reapplying
Yes, TWP is stain and sealer. Redo every 2-3 years on a deck surface. Lasts twice as long on vertical wood.
It is not.
I’m staining cedar posts that are already in place/vertical. How do you suggest applying the stain? Brush/cloth/etc?
Stain pad or brush. https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/application-tools/brushes-stain-pads
Is this 1500 serie a good option for outdoor furnitures?
Thanks
Yes.
I have a new Western Red Cedar gate installed between redwood fencing that is a few years old. We prepped the fence and stained it with the 1520 Pecan. When applied to the cedar, which has become quite blonde it is too light compared to the adjacent fencing. I’ve tried the darker 1516 and 1503 on a sample board of the gate material but it just ended up too dark. Any suggestions for an in-between color need?
Try mixing the Pecan and the Dark Oak.
im wanting to put this on ceder wood do I go with natural or cedar ton?
Any color you like will work. Wood type does not matter.
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series-stain-colors-and-photo-albums/
I just didn’t know if cedar tone would make it darker think I want it natural. so kind of like reg stain then
Natural is not clear but tinted and the stain must be tinted if you want UV protection from graying. Look at the link we sent for pictures.
I applied 1504 black walnut 2-3 years ago. Can I use a brightner to clean and reapply? The two 1504 from 2-3 years ago doesn’t need to be stripped correct?
You need to clean and brighten to reapply. Brightener my itself does not prep for reapplication. Use this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
I pressure washed and light sanded some doug-Fir benches and will now be applying finish. Which product would be the absolute easiest to maintain (they are for a church and I’ll be turning over the care to staff)? -is it possible to do light maintenance with simple oils or similar to extend “refinish” time?
Use the TWP 1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
You can light clean and recoat as needed with the 1500 Series. You cannot apply an “oil” over it, it will fail if you do.
Should there be any issues changing colors for re-coat? For ex: changing to Natural to avoid over-darkening and minimize overlap lines from novice painters
Sorry you had an issue but it seems you did not follow the correct directions for new wood:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I am going to paint a 2-yr old cedar fence for the first time. What product do you recommend?
Use the 1500 Series.
I plan to use your stripper to remove Redwood 1502 and refinish with California Redwood 1511. Current finish is about 5 years old. Will the stripper sufficiently remove old stain in more protected areas (e.g. north side or under rail tops) to allow for the color change, or should I stick with 1502? Thanks for any information.
Yes, the RAD stripper while pressure washing will remove the TWP. Brightener after:
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Any way to get a sample of a few colors?
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
AL
Use the TWP 100 Series.
ALABAMA
Hello,i installed a privacy fence this spring around my inground pool. The wood is treated, what should I use when I treat it with TWP. We are going natural.
Where do you live and it has to be a tinted color to prevent UV graying.
Hello, we have a very slow siding replacement project that uses rough cut cedar boards for window and door trim, as well as for porch posts and trim. The 20 year old cedar siding that we just tore off was stained black and badly sun damaged from the Oklahoma heat. Our new cedar wood trim is now a variety of ages (1-8 months), colors, and textures because the work has been so slow.
I can’t figure out what stain to apply. The painter plans to pressure wash the older, grayed boards then stain but stain newer boards with no prep. Painter likes oil based stains but is willing to apply water based. My main consideration is longevity, because I can’t reach the second floor windows myself and I don’t want to hire someone to maintain the trim more often than necessary. We would like to maintain a rustic, lighter/natural toned cedar look if possible. How often would we need to reapply this stain, and what kind of future prep work would need to be done around these 2nd floor windows?
Clean and brighten all for prep and then apply two coats of the TWP stain. Reapply as needed every 3-6 years. Prep would be the same.
Hello—We just had a cedar fence installed here in the northeast. We would like to apply the 1500 only, no tinted stain first. With it being vertical, and using only 1500 clear, do you still recommend waiting 4-12 months and do you still recommend the Gemini prep? Thank you.
Yes to both questions.
Unless the wood is rough sawn and then you can do it now without prep.
We have a new pressure treated wood deck. We applied the Olympic Maximum Clear Sealant. It has some yellow tint color, not clear (regret choosing that clear sealant). Question : can we use TWP 1503 stain on top the “Olympic maximum waterproof clear sealant”? Would the TWP1503 dark oak color cover the yellow? will the color after stain turn out good? Can you suggest?
No, you have to fully remove the Olympic first.
I’ve done a 1500 wet-on-wet application. If I decide the color needs to be a little darker can I apply another coat (same color) after it fully dries?
No, you cannot over apply the TWP.
